Q: Is a sword created by a Spiritbane Spike magical and +1?

Baskakov_DmitriyA Spiritbane Spike, when used, "becomes a short sword with the ghost touch weapon special ability". Normally, you can't make a weapon ghost touch without giving it at least a +1 enhancement bonus. So, does the short sword creating in this way possess the +1 enhancement bonus?

Q: How would a lv 20 Moon druid defeat a Forcecage?

JornHow would a lv 20 Moon druid get out of a Forcecage? Some options I've considered are: Repeated teleportation attempts There don't appear to be any teleportation spells that would work from inside a Forcecage on the Druid spell list. The one that comes closest is Plane Shift, which can't send me ...

Q: Can a second character perform the action of doning or doffing another PC's shield (willingly/unwillingly)?

ÆrvardIt takes an action to don and to doff a shield (See Pg 146 of the PHB). Does that action need to be the PC's action? Or, e.g. could another member of the party (another PC), or even a familiar with opposable thumbs (eg. Imp, Sprite), spend their action remove a player's shield (willingly or unwil...

Q: Can an artificer have a steel defender and a homunculus?

Amethyst WizardThinking about playing an artificer character and curious about the interactions with the Steel defender and the homunculus servant infusion, is there any contraindication?

10:44
@HotRPGQuestions I still don't know a good way around them needing bonus actions without breaking the action economy
11:03
@AncientSwordRage There's a possible house-rule with allowing a BA as an action, but that still doesn't good for the artificer
@Someone_Evil yeah doesn't seem it to me

Had my first in-person game yesterday since Covid.
It was glorious.
13:22
@NautArch Vaccines are the bee's knees. I went to a wedding over the weekend where I could safely gather with 150 people and eat, drink, and dance the night away.
13:55
@ThomasMarkov We still had one guy who has a baby that wanted to be masked, and another who masked as well, but it was fine!
@NautArch On my first read, I thought I saw "We still had one guy who was a baby that wanted to be masked" and I was like "No, that cant be right, let me read that again".
Also, the Wild Sheep Chase was a really solid intro adventure.
@NautArch Oh, you ran that one?
@ThomasMarkov Yeah. The party half-orc Barbarian tried to chat-up the half-orc at the beginning, but failed his persuasion so combat ensued. But at the main house, they successfully snuck in and then it went south and the light cleric critted a guiding bolt, killing the wizard.
@ThomasMarkov The baby wanted to RP an assassin, of course the baby wanted a mask! 😄
14:06
I also made a random marinade of lime, poblano chiles, chili powder, garlic, and olive oil and the chicken thighs came out amazing.
Thighs are the best part of chicken.
Working in the poultry industry, I know what sells and what doesnt, and it's so weird to me that boneless thighs arent popular at all.
They are my absolutely favorite.
So easy to cook and so good.
I make a bourbon chicken with rye whiskey that is outrageously delicious.
Boneless thighs are one of two secret ingredients.
When I serve it to people, they always ask "how did you get chicken breast so tender and juicy" and Im like "boneless thighs are objectively better than breast for exactly that reason".
And they grill soooo weeelll

Q: What do you actually say to activate Power Word Kill?

LeonthelucarioThe Power Word Kill spell description says: You utter a single word of power that instantly kills one creature of your choice, whether the creature can hear the word or not. What is the actual word of power? Like can it be anything or does it have to be the word kill or any other word involving...

@ThomasMarkov My wife concurs 100%, she prefers I use thighs for grilled chicken. (And I'd love to have that recipe, there is always rye in my liquor cabinet)
@ThomasMarkov The one thing I dislike about cooking with boneless thighs is that I find them hard to cut and trim well. My go-to method is to use kitchen shears, but I'm curious if there is a better way (or if I just need to get better at it)
@Upper_Case I've never had any trouble with a sufficiently sharp knife
@ThomasMarkov That's probably it. My cutting and trimming techniques have room for improvement, and my set of kitchen knives is older than I am (though they are well maintained). I usually use a boning knife for chicken thighs
I prefer a short paring knife for trimming thighs.
I've found that longer knifes are pretty useless for trimming thighs.
Or at least, with my skills, do a pretty sloppy job.
14:51
I just cut them in quick strips.
Last night, I grilled up the remaining poblanos/garlic fromthe marinade and just chopped stuff up for the tacos.

@HotRPGQuestions "Muad'Dib"
I really need to work on my kitchen knife skills generally when it comes to meat. I'm good at vegetables, but meat seems to take me forever

Has anyone run Last Lab of Kwalish?
Probably. It's been out for a few years now.
Well, I'm going to ask next how it is, but figured I'd ask if anyone has run it here first :P
From what I understand, it's based on the old Barrier Peaks adventure, and it doesn't have battlemaps.
16:55
Is the lack of maps an issue?

Q: Does this question about multiple attacks and advantage need more details?

Thomas MarkovAs I am writing, this question is sitting at 4 reopen votes. Normally, I would just let community moderation work things out (which will probably happen here), but reopen reviews from some users have caused me to question my own perspective on the question. To be clear, I do not mean to call anyo...

@TheOracle Nah. But it's not very helpful without them.
@NautArch So when do we close questions that are one question about many different features?
@ThomasMarkov WHen they can't be answered with a general answer?
The problem is that the question is 'okay' as it stands. It's a genral question with a general answer.
But that doesn't actually help the querent, I don't think.
Asking this question about two particular features seems like a better question than this one, but we would close for needs focus.
So they should tell us which method is granting advantage so we can give them a useful answer.
But as it stands, it is/was answerable - just not in any helpful way.
17:25
@NautArch This seems to be a pretty low standard for "answerable" tbh
@ThomasMarkov i admit that it is.
It's why I prefer specific questions about specific problems.
"Not answerable in any helpful way" seems like it should be our understanding of "unanswerable".
It really should.
but I don't think it actually is.
I'd like it to, though.
Seems like its making room for noise.
Asking the same question about two different features is not stackable, but asking it about all the features is stackable; I'm not sure I can get behind that idea.
I ca'nt believe i'm arguing for the question to remain open, but the question isn't asking about all features, it's asking how advantage generally works, and the answer is the general answer for how it works.
At this point, i'd have preferred the answer wasn't there so we could clarify what OP is asking about, but it is what it is. OP needs to ask a new question.
17:32
So entertain me here - would this be a similarly stackable question:
Hold up, let me think, the example I thought of is still a better question.
haha
Ultimately, Silver needs to tell us if this 'works' for them or not.
I cant even think of a question that has the same issue Im seeing here.
I"m guessing it doesn't, which makes the question closeable or reaskable.
Okay, here's one:
"If I'm targeted by a spell, do I have to keep making saving throws until I succeed?"
With no other context given
Is that stackable?
"it depends on the spell"
Also a legitimate and unhelpful answer.
@MikeQ There are a couple of 'maps' but no real battlemaps
Which seems like a win/no win scenario. I stink at redrawing maps, and so do my players it appears.
17:41
@NautArch So you think such questions should make it past our noise filter, as it were?
@ThomasMarkov No, I don't. But the quick answer kind of caught us in a bad spot.
It's more of RTBTM question.
@NautArch There were 4 close votes when the answer was posted, having your answer possibly being invalidated is the cost of doing business with questions having several close votes.
Also true.
IT's borderline enough that I don't really want to get involved (which I haven't.)
I dont think the answer is of any concern here.
@NautArch Fair. Thanks for entertaining me.
Also thanks for entertaining me on fridays.
Of course! I was frustratingly able to play devil's advocate on this one.
I'm loving icewind. Would love to run it again with the local group, but with half the group in our friday campaign...
@ThomasMarkov If it does get reopened and gets another 4 votes to close, i'll do the final.
Saving votes for the final vote often seems important as a lot of folks will vote, but not drop the final vote.
18:19
@NautArch Will not vote to reopen, this is yet another low quality question from that user. It's also got a lot of RTBTM in it.
18:40
@ThomasMarkov or @KorvinStarmast Y'all ever run lost lab of kwalish?
bah, "has spaceships, rayguns, and power armor" not really what i'm looking for.
@NautArch I have not.
But I might give it a shot this weekend.
18:56
Considering curse of strahd, too.
Didn't want something super long.
CoS can be long or short.
hmm
I'm hoping I can get a 5hour session every other week.
But given that this is their first 'real' adventure with their own characters, wanted some time for them to get involved, but not so much that they never get a chance to have an opportunity to play someone new.
I may just make up something in icewind dale.
@NautArch Sofia the First campaign with Candlekeep.
Maybe Forge of Fury.
from Yawning Portal
19:12
@NautArch Ah, sorry, I should've clarified what I meant by "Barrier Peaks". That's the old adventure where the PCs discover a weird metal ruin, and it turns out to be a crashed spaceship with aliens, robots, laser weapons, and other scifi props. So I imagine Lost Lab of Kwalish has similar stuff.
@MikeQ yep, read that on a reddit thread :)
So yeah, not quite the feel i'm going for (yet).
We've got two experienced 5e players, a grognard first playing 5e, and a newbie.
@NautArch I have not. Way back when, when Barrier Peaks came out as a module, we had a DM who wanted to run it, but we never completed it because summer happened before we got to the recommended levels. I picked it up at a game store years later but never ran it
Very fair, I've spoken with a few who see this as a "You got your scifi in my fantasy!" thing and don't want it
@MikeQ I definitely want to run it at some point, though. Just not in the 'let's learn D&D together" stage.
@MikeQ So is the clone spell and psionics; the amount of genre overlap folks like is variable. My DM for the Saturday night group has quite a bit of Sci Fi/Techmagic in his, and it works well enough.
@NautArch For that you want Keep on the Borderlands 😎
19:15
@KorvinStarmast no more gygaxian adventures for me.
grumble grumble tomb of horrors grumble grumble
@NautArch That one's an outlier, Keep on the Borderlands is very good. What's the starting level for your adventure group? 3?
@KorvinStarmast I'd like to start at 3, maybe get to 5 or 7.
or even 10.
@NautArch We did Forge of Fury and it was quite an enjoyable one. it will get them to 5, I am pretty sure.
but that's a long one.
@KorvinStarmast Yeah, I like how contained it is. it's another good intro.
The guy I gave the premade barbarian is going to continue playing a barbarian (he's our grognard.)
@NautArch you can take it in bites since there are three or four levels of caves ... if you are interested in the shennanigans I pulled with the succubus, send me an email, I think I have her setting the hook bit still on file.
19:18
@KorvinStarmast keep or forge?
Forge
Keep is "start at 1" in intention
ah, cool. I think i'm leaning towards that right now. Unless I just go a short homebrew in icewind dale.
But you could start it at two and it's still doable, you just need to keep an eye on pacing.
My distaste for level 1 is palpable.
The candlekeep ones are hit and miss. The two I recall best from play test are for later levels.
@NautArch Then do Forge, it starts at 3
19:20
@KorvinStarmast yeah. I had read over the 3rd level adventure in candlekeep and was underwhelmed. Felt like I may as well just homebrew myself.
It's a hook, and that's about it.
@NautArch Yeah. The level 7 one I had to add some meat to the bones, for sure.
I have to say rolling actual dice yesterday was unbelievable.
Silly how much I missed it.
@NautArch Heck, Salt Marsh is pretty good. I started our four person group on that at level 3, it went fine.
Although half the players started rolling on dndbeyond because they liked the history it tracks.
I thought about salt marsh, too :)
Tell me more.
Although I'll be offline for a bit. Have to buy a new fish for daughter. Betta died last night.
@NautArch OK, later on
20:06
Meant with full sincerity
We used to have fish, but they died from various causes: suicide by head-bonking, losing a tail to the filter, eating too many rocks, one too many live childbirths, etc. :)
21:03
@bobble my parents have fish
@AncientSwordRage is it good?
@Akixkisu no idea
@AncientSwordRage I guess I'll have to check it out, thanks for sharing.
@Akixkisu me too somehow
22:44
@AncientSwordRage it is PbtA.
@Akixkisu yes I checked a short while after you asked
23:25
I wonder if the XDM2e will be worthwhile.
