@BESW how did you manage that?
he made one deck that prevented "all" (in quotes because it wasn't like, infinite but if he set it up fast enough it was more than you could do depending on your deck) damage
so he didn't counter effects, or stop you from playing cards, but he didn't care how much damage you were doing unless it was more than he could prevent
@vicky_molokh-unsilenceMonica I imagine if they ever made an RPG system based off of A Wise Man's Fear/Name Of The Wind, they'd have to include something like that with how sympathy magic worked (but it would also work in fate I expect)
Prevented all damage (optionally, and could target myself, my creatures, or other players and their creatures), resurrected my creatures if you managed to destroy them, had a tiny bit of permanent-destruction just in case I needed to break somebody's combo, and then when I was ready I dealt global (non-targeted) damage to all creatures and players except those I spared.
It was a generically effective deck that was only weak against some niche builds, or particularly fast decks that got to me before I had my defenses up. Which is why I played in free-for-all multiplayer games where the deck that never attacked was never the most immediate threat, until it was too late.
lol
I did play at least a few games in those mixes telling everyone they would regret targeting me first when you killed everyone
XD
I didn't build very powerful decks usually but I did build ones that got a lot of agro quickly
@BESW sounds delightfully 'evil'
00:06
[grin] Even when everyone at the table knew exactly what I was playing, there was always the counterspell or sliver deck that was going to win right now and people felt like they could deal with me later.
Narrator: "Later" turned out to be too late.
people are pretty crazy about building their magic decks
@AncientSwordRage I, ah. Played with a couple of very devious people for a while.
Picked up some bad habits defensively.
lol
I really liked synergy, but I usually built a deck too hard on a synergy and it ended up not being fast enough
except that one goblin deck I made
though that was practically a joke deck
@BESW ahhhh I see
@BESW oh... I see
@trogdor when I make decks... And I say make loosely, they tend to be aiming to do one thing well, and that one thing is rarely 'win'
The "prevent all damage, deal global damage" deck started as a response to an elf-mana deck that drew and played the entire deck by turn three, then manufactured an arbitrarily infinite number of tokens of arbitrarily infinite power and toughness as often as it liked.
00:11
@BESW I can see why you went the nuclear bunker route
Tap an elf: gain mana equal to the elves in play.
Spend 2 mana: summon a 1/1 token.
Whenever a creature enters play: untap all your creatures.
My current thought-experiment deck is Rafiq of the Many, but going wide and giving all the tokens exalted, rather that relying on creatures having exalted naturally. My favourite idea of how to do that is making all my tokens slivers
I'm glad none of the Plane Shift expansions for 5e allowed elves to infinitely replicate like they do in MtG
@BESW I recognise all those cards but I could I my name the last one
Sliver tokens! [recoils, hissing]
00:14
@MikeQ that would make an interesting setting
...now I'm imagining Kulds as elves.
@BESW it takes two cards though, and is quite janky
@BESW kulds?
He also had
Whenever anyone plays a creature: draw a card.
and two different "you can't deck yourself" mechanics.
@AncientSwordRage Ravenous beings in the War of Ashes setting, which live for hundreds of years and reproduce very quickly. Their population was kept in check by a scarcity of food in their northern homelands but since they discovered all the lovely edibles in the south....
@MikeQ infinite elves, oh dear. boggles
MtG elves are the Double Elf I've been warning people about this whole time
00:22
@AncientSwordRage pretty similar to what I do yeah
Kulds would be pretty cool if it weren't for the,... sentient creatures count as food thing
@BESW ahh gotcha
@trogdor I've read almost all the book now and I feel like it ought to be pretty easy to just... leave that out?
They'd still have a devastating effect, like locusts.
yeah
that was what I was talking about earlier when we talked about them a bit
I was interested in still possibly including them and just leaving out the whole eating people thing
Ah, I thought you meant just leaving Kulds generally out of play.
@trogdor I'm cool with that.
I mean that is an option too but it wasn't what I meant
00:38
Thanks for setting me straight on that.
01:01
yeah no problem I mean
sometimes I say something, especially via chat and I'm like "I know what I am talking about so the people I am talking to must too right?"
and then I don't elaborate further and find out later maybe we weren't on the same page after all XD
01:14
it may or may not be obvious from the outside but sometimes I bounce between thinking/assuming people are following my exact like of logic and possibly overexplaining what I mean XD
01:25
@trogdor so on average it's just right?
01:55
If ever I needed proof that I’d have some number of bard levels if the world ran on d&d rules, I have it: my grandfather gave me a book of 214 “practical and obscure skills” for Christmas, and off the top of my head I know I can do and have done at least 40 of them, including all of the craft related skills and a good mixture of the rest
Although some 20 of them are meat-related so I would never ever do them
02:12
@BardicWizard that's rather impressive
@AncientSwordRage you would think that but at least from my perspective it's an anxiety of extremes XD
Anyone have experience explaining the death of a pet to a toddler? (less than 2 years)

in-laws cat died today and we go over there a lot and Teddy suddenly won't be there any more.
0 from me on that one
sorry to hear it
02:29
@trogdor yeah, not from my perspective, but I can see how that's likely to be 'anxiousafying'
@goodguy5 not really, but I've had pets die.... How did teddy pass away?
had some seizures earlier tonight, rushed to cat ER, died there within the hour.
ooh no that's upsetting
@goodguy5 that's really upsetting for everyone, isn't it....
yea, it's pretty sucky. They're all pretty messed up about it.
It might be easier to tell them in stages?
02:33
And mother in law has Fibro Myalgia, so my wife has been emotionally supporting her a lot. So, on top of dealing with the death of Teddy, goodwife5 is also worried about the state of her mother.
Very poorly, gone away to see the vet, too poorly to come back?
@AncientSwordRage like I said, he's less than two years, so his sentence structure is shoddy at best.
@goodguy5 fibromyalgia can go do one... My wife has it and it sucks
Weed maybe helps
@goodguy5 that's true, it may just not be explainable?
02:34
And then the very minor "concern", that goodtoddler5 will be like "te'ee?" and that the fam will just cry.
@goodguy5 over heard it's good for a lot of things, medicinally
idk. just all sad
@goodguy5 I think that might have to be part of the grieving process unfortunately
@goodguy5 it is all sad
@AncientSwordRage granted my list of things I did is, first of all, mostly “did once or twice, could probably do again if I thought about it” and secondly, probably only about 25% “could do again off the top of my head without instructions, has done it a thousand times, and/or would call myself proficient” so it’s less “skills I mastered” and more “skills I’ve managed to try successfully”
yeah I mean, I have basically no experience with this handling it with a kid, but I have had several pets die and just recently lost a cat too
02:36
I've had chronic back pain from (recently discovered) degenerative disc disease for over a decade.

Got my medical MJ license and BOOM instant life improvement.
and I don't think there is any magic bullet for this
The best you can do then is warn your in-laws that goodtoddler5 is going to be asking for teddy, so when it happens it doesn't hit too hard
@BardicWizard Jack of all trades, etc... :-D
@goodguy5 also anxiety and depression?
@trogdor there's really not
@AncientSwordRage that's a good point
thanks
@AncientSwordRage for me? no. for many people yes
@goodguy5 no worries
@goodguy5 that's what I thought
It's really one of those things that's only illegal for dumb reasons.

Competition to loobyist products and Nixon trying to discredit hippies
02:44
@goodguy5 I’m so sorry for your loss. I don’t have any experience with explaining loss to toddlers, but my little brother was less than 4 when my grandmother died and he was really sad but he kinda knew she was going to die since she was pretty sick for a long time before that so we were able to ease him into the idea ahead of time
@AncientSwordRage that’s fair
@BardicWizard I didn't mean that derivatively by any means
@goodguy5 No, but I'm sorry to hear about it. And I hope Goodtoddler had a good Christmas!
@goodguy5 there was a chief medical officer in the UK, who was trying to make it known that alcohol was worse than weed, and got fired
@BardicWizard I'm sure you are a master of many talents, whether you know/admit to it or not
@nitsua60 Oh it was a grand time. He hardly knew what to do with himself.
Got to go
Ciao for niao
02:58
@AncientSwordRage thank you, and I am by at least one definition. It just mostly centers around yarn and fibercrafts
And not so much “how to smoke meat in a flowerpot” or “how to bathe a cat” although I would love to do some of the stuff in the book

@BardicWizard OK, that first one is oddly specific

Q: Does the Necromancy Wizard's lvl 10 feature, Inured to Undeath, prevent losing maximum hit points as a result of losing attunement to a magic item?

AmarovInured To Undeath (bolding mine): Beginning at 10th level, you have resistance to necrotic damage, and your hit point maximum can't be reduced. You have spent so much time dealing with undead and the forces that animate them that you have become inured to some of their worst effects. How does t...

@goodguy5 No particular experience per se, but my understanding is that the recommended practice is to be open and candid about it.
Also, I am sorry for your loss.

Q: A player's character has spent their childhood in a brothel and it is bothering me. What can I do?

Maiko ChikyuThe player's character spent their childhood in a brothel before being sold to pirates and being a crewmate before deciding to retire and get married only to have their wife killed. Ma Nishtana (Why is this Night Different?) [beta] by Kyoto Ben. Players of Ma Nishtana tell their own version of the Exodus story, embodying key characters and making their own choices to deliver the Hebrew people out of peril. Feedback wanted!
Kyoto Ben wrote a twitter thread about the games which inspired and guided Ma Nishtana.
Yawp!

So apparently I’m tied for 12th in number of hats network wide
nice
I don't think I am anywhere near that but I definitely think this is the highest number of hats I have ever gotten, or at least the highest number of hats I have gotten without even trying to get most of them
there are a loooot of secret hats this year that I just got
like I didn't change any of my activity on the site to get them, unless the small number of things I did to get some of the none secret hats I have did the trick, but I got most of the secret hats on a day that all I did was my normal routine
I'm not complaining, if anything I'm pretty happy that I got so many hats to play with this year
even if I happen to already be wearing my favorite one
I'm really glad I got the sun one instead of the moon one too
(I think I got the moon one last year anyway)
13:34
@RevenantBacon I'd be happy to take the 'on demand' detect magic invocation ...

Q: How does the Interception fighting style interact with Uncanny Dodge?

field158If an enemy hits a Rogue with an attack, the Rogue uses Uncanny Dodge as a reaction, and at the same time a Fighter uses his reaction to use Interception to lessen the damage the Rogue takes, which feature takes effect first? 14:18
@vicky_molokh-unsilenceMonica If going solo, yes, but at the scale a lot of D&D combat takes place in, that can obstruct what other party members are doing. It 's a mixed blessing.
14:49
@KorvinStarmast Its radius seemed barely enough to wall off the distance between some nearby pairs of houses.
Or I should specify: it would've barely sufficed for that. But I didn't have it on the spell list anyway. Had Hadar which similarly felt small enough for enemies to run out of in a couple of turns.
15:14
@goodguy5 o/. My dog died when my kids were about 4 and 2. I was prety honest about the whole thing and it was a decent introduction to death. My hardest thing was I'm not really a religious guy and I didn't want to say she went to heaven. So I just said she's gone, but she remains in our hearts. We also planted a tree with her ashes which helped.
15:34
@KorvinStarmast Sure, it's nice to have, but is it better than any of the other feat options you have?

Hats are unwieldy.
21:08
I think Miniman might have gotten into the network's top ten hat-list a few years back? And RPGSE as a group was pretty high in the site-rankings that year I was watching it, too, IIRC.
Turns out lots of us already do lots of the nice things that SE brainstorms as possibly badge-worthy =)
