@BardicWizard Entertainingly to me, they're all the same age demographic from the point of view of most others. Elementary school children and those post graduation likely refer to the entire group as high school kids.
I do recall that age delineations felt much more pronounced when I was younger.
Ordoalea Publishing wrote a twitter thread about "what I learned while writing #ttrpg stuff in my native tongue and in Croatian." He would also like to hear other experiences from non-Anglosphere TRPG creators.
GcL
GcL
Some seven year olds will sagely assert that "you're thirty seven" and after that "you're old"
@GcL The younger someone is, the fewer years they have for reference, so each year of age separation seems relatively larger when compared to an older person's perspective
GcL
GcL
True. When someone is 5% older than your living memory, that's a lot of months early on and a lot of years later on.
Also, the pre-university education system has a structure that bins students by year, which means (to the kids) that 1 year is worth an entire social group, and reinforces a sense of fundamental difference between 1-year age periods
00:05
@GcL that kid is my little brother, except his cut off for “old” is closer to 50 since he knows calling my mom or dad “old” is a one way ticket to being grounded
@Powerdork this is what I was asking, thank you..
rereading it is wierd sounding but I was asking which con bonus to which hit die would roll below 2x the con mod the most often
if that makes more sense.
@MikeQ This very much so: I've had experience with groups and cultures where people have lots of exposure to each other across age groups (and other demographic shifts) in daily life, and (gasp, shock) they're more comfortable with each other. Especially if there's opportunities to interact as collaborators rather than in a power hierarchy.
@GcL not as of RAW without magic items..
GcL
GcL
@TheDragonOfFlame Definitely with magic items. I'm pretty sure there was a question on the stack. 30 is just my recollection of that.
Well, wish could do it without a magic item. Just have to deal with whatever karmic blowback the DM decides to tag along with it.
I grew up terrified of my friend's mother, who I always knew as an authority figure: she was my teacher, my youth group leader, etc.
In my late teens we were appointed to a committee together and she gave me a ride to and from the meetings, so we got a chance to socialize and serve together as equals. We became good friends and I stopped being terrified of her as an older authority figure.
(She's still rather scary, but now I know EVERYBODY thinks she's scary, even people thirty years older than her.)
00:21
@BESW that's quite the feat
I distinctly remember chatting to teachers more comfortably than most classmates in primary school
But I try to get on with everyone
Yeah, I had a definite leg up compared to some of my peers because I had experience with lots of different people in social and service contexts from a young age, where I wasn't just the annoying kid but a participating part of the group.
I’ve always been better with adults than with kids my age, which is possibly partly cause I’m the oldest child and partly bc the kids in my class, before like 5th grade, were jerks (think senseless taunting, taking my books and dumping them in the planter box, and telling the teacher on me for the strangest things). Or maybe it’s just because I got stuff adults talked about and not what kids did
And weirdly in my teens and early 20s I found that people in "my year" tended to be harder to bond with beyond superficial acquaintanceship, but just a year or two up or down was much easier.
@BESW same. I’ve been the token person under 50 in church choir (and a couple other things) since 7th grade and now that we have to do volunteer hours for school I know how to interact with adults as equals while some of my friends (who do fine around other teens) can’t even look a teacher in the eye without flinching
00:36
The difference was even more pronounced when I spent four years in a place where large multigenerational households weren't the norm.
@BESW I aspire to be scary to people 30 years older than me
XD
@BardicWizard I know this feeling, I always got along better with adults in school than I did with my peers
Teachers and such were more direct about what they expected
XD
Other teens, when I was one, kinda seemed to expect me to already know
00:51
@trogdor they really do. I accepted that I’d be the weird kid (cause I’ve got wierd hobbies and strange habits) and learned to read some social cues and people mostly seem to get that “oh, that’s just them being a little strange” now but there’s still a lot of things that I don’t pick up on that people think I should know
yeah
not that I didn't have friends my own age but maintaining those relationships felt like a lot more work than being awkward pals with some of my teachers XD
I dunno, I guess I was honestly a little scared of people my own age at the time really
I'm still a little scared of teenagers XD
My only good friends are really just my fellow introverted and socially not-great classmates (also known as my gaming groups) plus my not-blood sister who’s known me since before kindergarten and just gets me. They’re all people I don’t have to try to understand for some reason or another so they’re easy. Beyond that, I have a couple friends who are adults (though I’m not friends with any of my current teachers, I would call at least one teacher more a friend than a former teacher)
@trogdor teenagers are scary.
I'm glad I'm not the only one who thinks that
Does anyone like the hats?
01:11
what hats?
I don't think I'm gonna do my daily hat thing this year.
are there hats already?
@trogdor Hatmas has begun.
(Aw, no oneboxing.)
hmm
I don't seem to be getting a hat for doing what it says to do to get it
Yeah, I don't know if it means a particular question's page or the list-of-site-questions page but either way I'm not getting a hat for it.
Wait, there, I got one.
Took a while to notice, I guess. Still waiting for the meta mask.
There it is.
01:19
hmm
mk
I'll wait and see if I get one in a bit then
As a perpetual hat-crocheter (and unfortunately, current hat-knitter), I worry for my reputation within my crafting circle if the number of hats I have made in the last few weeks (2.5 since November 15) is compared to the number of these so-called hats (a mask should not be in the same place as a hat, for instance) in this strangeness
ah yep there it is
lol
hhaaaaatttt
or in this case mask
mask is good XD
let the masking begin
XD
user15026
@BESW I kepe forgetting it's that time of year
I did too.
Already got a secret hat
I have birds in my hair.
01:52
Yay, accidental hat
Apparently I earnt the Flashlight hat on StackOverflow em Portuguese....???
That'd be where you turned on Dark Mode, I assume.
Figured out vexillology
I think
02:08
@BESW I've got it on that other sites too
02:34
And I've not been on that site it years 🤔
New hat, and it's secret.
yep I have Quarantine hair apparently
if only they knew
I actually do have that XD
Is there a difference between quarantine hair and Troggy hair?
lol
hey
02:54
Hatmas time!
@GcL yep 30 is the cap
I welcome anyone to open a hatmas photo album meta, should they wish. Happy to hand the jingly reins across. :) We had them for 2015, 2016, 2017, and 2018. I posted the 2016-2018 ones pretending Hatmas was some kind of apocalyptic event, but we've just had a whole decade of 2020 and a different theme is definitely in order.
Hear, hear.
Ugh, yesterday was the annual tradition of “the 6BGP1BP change their avatars on hangouts to nutcrackers until the ballet inter-session starts to celebrate being done with nutcracker”, which I forgot about, and today is apparently the annual tradition of “bug me until I change my avatar too because I forgot again”. I got six pings, two emails, three texts, and my sister yelling at me, in the last hour, and sometimes I wish my friends didn’t have so much blackmail material on me
@doppelgreener I have only enough energy to change which hats I'm wearing XD
There is a decent chance that my stackexchange avatar is going to change to a nutcracker too. Because my friends have 12 years of blackmail on me
This year: maybe ponies? Splorts? Books? Cakes? Who knows
03:20
@BardicWizard I suggest a vintage novelty nutcracker.
@doppelgreener Surprised those haven’t got downvoted.. I thought main site was pretty strict
They're posted on meta, not main.
03:41
Evening.
It turns out my ballet friends have more than 12 years of blackmail on me and they’re jerks about it (but in a good way, the way 13 years of knowing each other has left us with strong friendship)
Completely unrelatedly, how long does avatar changing take to come into effect?
@Powerdork hi!
@Powerdork ahoy!
@BardicWizard Depends on when the different parts of the site check up on each other for changes; should be five minutes or less, but I've seen it take an hour.
Make sure you clicked the "all sites" button and not the "this site" button.
@BESW I don’t think I did that. Oops
03:54
I tried again, but we’ll see if it works. grumble grumble blackmailing your best-friend-slash-not-blood-sibling shouldn’t be allowed ever
At least I changed my google avatar relatively easily this year
Looks like it's propagated to all your individual site accounts, but not yet to your network or chat accounts. [rummages]
You've got it set up properly so far as I can tell. Just give it a little while.
yeah it takes some time usually to do anything
I should know I've changed it several times XD
BAZINGA
your welcome
@BESW I think it's special mod powers
Turns out responding to “so, you’ve got social media this year and should change your user picture there too” with “who says I’m going to?” gets the response “us and these twelve pictures of you exploding something in the theater back room, lest they get sent to your parents”
Sounds like an intervention

@AncientSwordRage it’s not. They’re from 4 different years, and 12 different incidents. (Then again, I have a grand total of either 37 or 42 explosion-related incidents over the course of 13.4 years, depending on whether you count the 25th through 30th as one incident or 6)
@BardicWizard wow. gnome much? XD
@Shalvenay no? It’s a really long story
@BardicWizard ah -- gnomes are oft said to be explosion-prone
(to be fair: the gnome chars I know the best are not that way, though!)
there we go
04:16
I started ballet at 2.5ish, and by the time I was 2.6ish it was spring recital and I accidentally dropped my full container of hairspray outside next to the heat vent. That was the first explosion incident. The next one wasn’t until I was 7 or 8
So it really was more like 8 or 9 years where most of them were
@BardicWizard oh not about the explosions, exclusions are fine....about your social media picture.... 😝
@BardicWizard auspicious explosion
@AncientSwordRage every year the 6BGP1BP group chat (it stands for 6 Ballet Girls And 1 Ballet Person) celebrates the break in ballet sessions after nutcracker by changing our google hangouts avatars until the start of the inter session between nutcracker and recital (around the start of January). Since we’ve started to get other social media, the others thought it’d be fun to apply this to all our not school related accounts. As usual, I forgot until the rest of them reminded me and then blackmailed me
because tradition
Although this is the first year blackmail was added to the “friendly reminders”
Heh
I should leave before morning arrives, and something turns into a pumpkin
05:13
@MikeQ Oh, yeah, mostly the guilty pleasure aspect of the thing. :)

Q: How does Warlock Spell slot level interact with the feat Metamagic Adept from Tasha's Cauldron of Everything?

TurukI have a warlock tiefling for which I am considering to choose the feat Metamagic Adept from Tasha's Cauldron of Everything. This will get me 2 sorcery points to spend. Looking at the sorcery point system, I believe I could spend these 2 sorcery points to regain one 1st-level spell slot, since a...

Y'all ever just colour in stock art?

A local art gallery put its most recent show online: "Creative Hands: Selected Works by Pacific Artists," a juried show from the Isla Center for the Arts.
Troggy and I know several of the people in it.

1 hour later…
08:58
@BESW Not especially, no.
09:57
@Powerdork no not really
10:29
@Powerdork I mean. Stock art from where, colored in for what?
Because the answer is "yes" but in ways that's probably not helpful or relephant.
@BESW ooh, it has more artists in it than I thought it would and I know more of them (and in a couple cases know of them but haven't spoken to them much myself) than I expected too
I'm definitely interested in the intent, and asking after the action because it's a vector toward hearing that intent.
My personal relationship to the stock art I was colouring is, I was allowed to request a character to fit in a set of stock art available from an illustrator on Patreon (on account of the patronage), and I'm using it for a pog on roll20.

Bash started, reposting this here just in case.
in Not a bar, but plays one on TV, 31 secs ago, by Derpy
Notice: for those who want to play the Hat Dash game on the Bash site (a sprite swap of the T-Rex Run Chrome game), there are two ways to unlock that:
a) simply wear any of the two mask hats and wait a bit. You should get a notification similar to the ones you get for new hats. Afterward, the play button will be on the Bash site homepage.
b) input a code on the Bash site. ***I advise not using this option since it bugged my user and now my score isn't tracked correctly on the leaderboard***
@Akixkisu @NautArch I've played D&D and Pathfinder and seen breakdown analysis of "is this specific armor worth the armor class penalties?" with specific yes/no answers and several "nos" at the higher end
mabye especially for pathfinder given it's full of trap options
this was a while ago, so i don't remember the details, but i do remember "get the biggest heaviest armor" was definitely not the right move and a whole lot of trade-offs absolutely weren't worth it even if you were optimizing for defence
12:33
            I got the master sword.
Wow!
STACK I AM CONCERENED ABOUT YOUR PERCEPTION OF WHAT COUNTS AS A HAT
5
Still need the rainbow puke hat.
12:40
I am going to do a thing this year of drawing something for each hat.
@doppelgreener edition baggage!
@NautArch true!
@doppelgreener Oooh.
I'd consider joining you in that, but my mother's asked me to make an animated not-a-Christmas card to email to our friends, and I'm learning how to do that.
edition baggage: the rpg
each player is to be distributed a different version of the rules to read, and then you all play using a specific ruleset chosen at random. (which may mean a version you have not yet read.) every version of the rules is the same thing written multiple different times by different authors working by oral description alone. every ruleset seems slightly unclear and incomplete, with questions probably answered in other editions (but not this edition).
@BESW oh, fun!
13:28
@doppelgreener are we playing guess the system? Is it d&d?
Aug 5 at 3:11, by BESW
Acoustic Cover Jam Hosted by kumada1. Either make a version of someone else's game that heavily uses your own styles, mechanics, and elements, or look at the cover / skim the synopsis of another game, and then make your own game based on what you saw or read.
13:45
@doppelgreener Tip of the hat to you. En guarde
13:59
@Derpy doesn't work for me (I raised a meta question)
42
Q: Hat dash doesn't work on mobile?

PureferretI got a notification saying You earned the right to run fast and jump for joy on Winter Bash! But it requires a spacebar, which I don't have available on mobile. Nor do I have a cantina. I noticed this in desktop mode. Here is a video of my struggles: https://imgur.com/a/EiXfqUi Can we get this...

14:20
@AncientSwordRage you really want to play ON MOBILE?
@Derpy Some people try to mark up ordinals ON MOBILE . . .
@vicky_molokh-unsilenceMonica the ordinals doesn't have impossible jumps because it was made faster than original. Only impossible timewalls for incrementiverse that can't be got around even on desktop pc.
@doppelgreener as a crocheter I very much agree with you on this. These are not all hats. I have made 2.5 hats in the last month and these are not hats in comparison
Can we call them “things that get added to your avatar” instead?
@Derpy PC makes it not ridiculously hard to set up an autoclicker software. Autoclickers on phones OTOH . . .
@doppelgreener I am concerned about the fact that "Take this" should be a wodden sword, not the Master Sword.
14:26
@doppelgreener There's a guy called Damocles who has been looking for that hat for a long time.
@kviiri possibly traveller ...
@Derpy wizard man upgraded
@Derpy wodden or wooden? 😕
Dem hats do
@KorvinStarmast tomatho.
@Derpy you don't? Tapping screen >>>Tapping spacebar
14:30
@AncientSwordRage let's just say that I have no problem at all at reaching 20k score on T-Rex Run on chrome (before getting bored and die on purpose), I struggle with this version.
@BardicWizard hats were 'famously' an add on item to a game called Team Fortress 2, which became a meme
@BardicWizard you haven't crocheted a sword?
@doppelgreener I have, actually, somewhere, if you count a lightsaber
@AncientSwordRage I know nothing about video games so that’s why I’m confused
@BardicWizard that's also why I thought it prudent to explain
Bardic Wizard has changed their picture.
14:34
@BardicWizard I would. Also instantly jealous.
I am uncomfortable with such abrupt changes.
@ThomasMarkov I really like, and it's also really confusing
Yeah it's neat.
@ThomasMarkov blame my “best friends”
they’re blackmailing me
@BardicWizard you should use your explosion skills against them
14:39
@doppelgreener Are you going to do a 2020 Hat album on meta?
@AncientSwordRage it was a part of a yoda pattern for someone
@BardicWizard that sounds awesome
@AncientSwordRage no way no how. I’m trying to avoid the explosions getting out, not create more explosions
@AncientSwordRage it is
@ThomasMarkov i haven't yet, but i'm busy handling a move!

I welcome anyone to open a hatmas photo album meta, should they wish. Happy to hand the jingly reins across. :) We had them for 2015, 2016, 2017, and 2018. I posted the 2016-2018 ones pretending Hatmas was some kind of apocalyptic event, but we've just had a whole decade of 2020 and a different theme is definitely in order.
i probably won't start the "drawing avatars for hats" thing until monday or tuesday
@ThomasMarkov how do you feel about creating the 2020 hat album? :)
I can do it.
But goodness, the bar is set pretty high.
14:52
hey
Got a real quick question that couldnt be asked on the site
Winterbash Episode IV: a new hat?
Do yall know any good online dnd sites
one you can play on
@ThomasMarkov i suggest take one of these posts, copy it or reword it or rewrite it to the extent that you're happy, and pick a theme you like, including optionally no theme at all (like in 2015)
including dialing the silliness knob as you wish. it is hatmas after all
14:53
@Minimilk you looking for people or a vitrual table top for your group?
im actually new to dnd
so im justy looking for an online site ig
roll20 is pretty standard
Just got the cordovan hat.
@Minimilk roll20 has a "looking for players" feature that works. How do I know? I joined a group on roll20, and we are still playing together.
Four Years Later
14:55
@ThomasMarkov my main guidance is: keep it relaxed, and probably don't do an apocalypse theme lol
Yeah, for sure.
@KorvinStarmast any other sites?
Is this the most important thing I've ever done? Who knows. But yes.
3
@Minimilk I think there is a 'new players' group of DMs ... get the free download, create an account, and click on the looking for a game feature. Make sure to let prospective others know you are new
@Minimilk I think that Fantasy Grounds might fit what you need, but I have no experience with it.
are there any forums on this site
14:57
@Minimilk No, but we have a list of forums. I am active at "giant in the playground" and they have plenty of RPG advice
ok thanks
wdym a list of forums
oh nvm
@ThomasMarkov you'll do great.

15:10
@TheOracle An echo of a question rather than a duplicate perhaps?
@ThomasMarkov not sure about the duplicate
i mean, "does it provoke OAs" is essentially "is it a creature" because only creatures provoke.
Community review is pretty split, so meta discussion is warranted.
absolutely!
i'm just not sure
FYI, I don't think i'll allow your misty step houserule
I would consider it for equal falling damage on a save by the creature, or no damage on a success.
@BardicWizard I see you've adjusted to a new avatar
@RevenantBacon my best friends are blackmailing me to do this until new years cause apparently changing my google picture isn’t enough for them
15:17
They're blackmailing you in to changing your avatar? LMAO, your friends are goofy
@NautArch It has come up maybe 6 times in 40+ games lol. All 6 times it was more of a for fun move than a tactical one.
@ThomasMarkov When you listed the damage output, it seemed a little much.
@RevenantBacon scroll back like 10 hours or something and see if you still think they’re goofy and not evil-ish
The falling creature still takes full damage regardless.
So theres at least a trade off.
@BardicWizard So I scrolled back, and it seems like they're just really really invested in the nutcracker thing. Still incredibly goofy :p
Also, what's this bout a Misty Step houserule @ThomasMarkov ?
15:27
3
A: Can you misty step over an enemy and then fall down?

Thomas MarkovYes, you can misty step above someone. There is nothing in the rules preventing this. Misty step says: Briefly surrounded by silvery mist, you teleport up to 30 feet to an unoccupied space that you can see. If you can see the unoccupied space, you can teleport to it. The trouble is adjudicating...

@ThomasMarkov a guaranteed 5d6 was my wut point on the rule.
Ah. Yeah, your version of falling onto another creature is super abuseable
@NautArch Guaranteed 10d6 for the falling creature though.
@RevenantBacon Eh, maybe. Hasnt been an issue for my players.
@RevenantBacon yeah. It’s been our tradition for over 3 years (technically at least three of us had google accounts before we were supposed to, so it’s more like 3 years that we can brag about) so I know why they are doing this, and I can’t say that I haven’t done a similar thing to them before, but blackmail is new
@ThomasMarkov from 30' up? Isn't that just 3d6?
15:32
> So if the falling creature falls 100 feet onto a creature, the creature on the ground make a DC 10 dex save, taking 10d6 on a failure, and 5d6 on a success.
@ThomasMarkov But...misty step is 30'
I did totally miss that 100' line
but it doesn't make sense with misty step
I mentioned in my section that I also have used this with dimension door.

Added the misty step example to the answer.
Yeah, it's not a bad houserule.
after further internal review
15:43
@Minimilk I'd love to have a chance to talk to your peers about 'not having social skills' and playing D&D - dispelling their preconceptions. But I probably don't live in your home town, so that's not likely. (I am a grandpa now ...)
... but in the case of your parents, that's a tougher nut to crack. I'd say my wife leans toward their opinion. She puts up with my hobby (30+ years married) as long as I keep it down to a dull roar, but she's never cared for it.
Thoughts on the first sentence of the 2nd paragraph from this answer?
The one starting with "but besides"
I get what they're trying to say, but sheeesh
@NautArch Yikes
deleted that.
15:56
Did you see the comment from the OP under it? LMAO
I basically read it as "If no one else posts an answer, yours will be best by default"
@TheOracle an I doing that right?
allo
@AncientSwordRage I shrunk your photo a bit.
@KorvinStarmast One of my "numbers", as in entertaining things I do in a bid to win the approval of my various peers, is to tell the story of the Sword of Damocles with a little bit of a twist ending
@ThomasMarkov thanks!
16:06
When the king reclaims his throne, he orders the sword removed before taking his seat. Damocles looks at the scene dumbfounded. "Oh heck. Why didn't I think to do that?"
@kviiri heh, maybe we need to call it The Sword of Dumbocles ...
Daayyyymn'ocles
@kviiri Then there's the skin specialist: I refer to Doctor Dermicles ...
snrk
And the classic Greek villain, Monocles
16:08
someone, please stop them before the pun more !
@MikeQ I understand that he worked alone ...
If he really acts it up, we can call him Hamocles
@KorvinStarmast He's also a card shark, pinocles.
@MikeQ there's a Shepherd druid guide by Nhym that I just reviewed, man, you have some neat features ...
@kviiri he runs an email advertising business on the side, so I call him Spamocles ...
@MikeQ And his twin brother Binocles?
Or what about the fastest non-runner of Marathon, named Bicycles
16:11
@MikeQ Didn't his toddler join him? Tricyles?
@MikeQ Rejoice, we reinflate !
Yes, and they all celebrated with Popsicles.
Damoclese sounds familiar, what's the cliff-notes version?
Sword of Damocles is a metaphor about having a constant reminder of potential doom.
rejoice, we bonker might actually work as a pun, given that an old friend of mine used to bike race competitively. He described to me what "bonking" is in terms of all of a sudden running out of energy ...
16:12
@RevenantBacon sword swinging above you. neer know when it'll fall
@RevenantBacon Damocles envies the king and gets to live his life for a day, but as a reminder of the danger that comes with such high power, a sword is hanged on a single thread of hair above the throne.
The worry that it'll fall consumes him to such degree that he is eventually relieved and happy to step away.
@RevenantBacon See also metus est plenus tyrannis "Fear is plentiful for tyrants" or "A tyrant's fear is complete fear"
@TheOracle @ThomasMarkov You did a great job. :)
I made a small update since we no longer have a "be nice" policy (and being nice is different to being kind anyway)
I am disappointed that they included masks in Hatmas. 😕 😒 Masks are something we are stuck with, not a fun thing. (Well, that's my take on it) I guess that 'fun is where you find it'
@doppelgreener I beg to dissent. Fluttershy existence proves you wrong :P
16:27
@Derpy one can be both, but i would direct you to the British who have perfected the art of being nice while being not even a little kind
@doppelgreener that isn't "nice", that is the "Lawful Polite" Larp D&D alignment.
@Derpy The opposite being "Chaotic Rude"?
@Derpy it definitely isn't kind, but it's defensibly nice.
@doppelgreener how so?
@doppelgreener Yep, got to see that first hand during my NATO job; slipping in the knife while being oh-so-polite is an art.
16:34
@KorvinStarmast let me check..... wait a second....

Also confirmed there will be Corona Mask hat.
@Derpy my first two "hatmas" awards this morning were masks. 😛 Thankfully, this lovely hat (cordovan) arrived and I find it quite stylish

@Shadow10YearsWizard let's open it is implemented in a way that won't be a pain trigger for many users....
^ and here. Obviously, typo, was meant to be "let's hope"
@Derpy Yeah, easy to do wrong.
and then...

@Shadow10YearsWizard probable, but you can still manage to make something stupid. A passive aggressive description message like "don't be an idiot wear this", something vaguely morbid like "a way to not die"... a red/blue mask with a 51 stars on it..... plenty of ways to get it horribly wrong.
lucky, no message, still a trigger for many either way.
@KorvinStarmast And if you want to unlock the secret game on the Bash site, you have to wear the hat at least once.
Or use an alternate way that has plenty of disadvantages.
@Derpy not interested, since I already have too many game interests at the mo, and my wife is starting to give me 'that look'
16:38
@KorvinStarmast it is just a sprite swap of the T-Rex chrome game with an unicorn replacing the dinosaur.
@Derpy I have to ask, what SE site is sugarcubecorner chat affiliated with? I don't play the T-Rex game, dare I try it Saturday as I sip my weekend coffee while the house is asleep?
@BardicWizard Being nice is about apparent politeness and pleasantness and saying the correct things. Being kind is about being generous, considerate, and gentle. These are totally different sets of things.
One can be kind, without being nice, by delivering bad news the person doesn't want to hear and which is uncomfortable to deliver, but in a way that is considerate and will help them. One can be nice, without being kind, by avoiding telling them the news, always saying "yes" to things but then ghosting the person and not turning up.
@doppelgreener There is some overlap, though.
@KorvinStarmast There is.
Just a bit.
16:41
In the UK you can often find Niceness prioritised specifically without prioritising Kindness.
@Derpy Your hat: how did you arrange that rakish tilt? Very stylish :)
@KorvinStarmast Check the box "Show Controls"
One of them lets you rotate the hat
@KorvinStarmast What Thomas just said... also the hat is meant to fit the True User picture.
@doppelgreener Ah, not sure if that crossed the pond intact, though I suspect we have something like that going on - grandma was adamant about 'if you don't have something nice to say, then don't say anything' as a social guideline.
remember that I am stuck with the dupe chat account
16:43
@KorvinStarmast it's a phenomenon that's definitely not localised to the UK :D
I live in a world of computer hat control; the mind boggles. 😮
it's just the British perfecting the art of offensive politeness that comes to mind the easiest
(offensive in any sense of the word)
@doppelgreener sounds like high school, where if you’re nice in front of a teacher, you can be as un-kind as you want elsewhere
i can type today, i swear
@Derpy cute cute cute
@ThomasMarkov @Derpy Thank you, dear friends, for helping me become more stylish
16:46
@Derpy your chat profile isn't synced to your mainsite profile? D:
@KorvinStarmast Real talk though, you should use the Vexilollogist hat to just cover up the star mast.
@ThomasMarkov That's not happening; not a fan of that hat either.
Speaking of stars and masts, my bard (Lore) with Sailor Background swapped in thieves tools and swapped out navigator tools; she's a bit more "lady of fortune" and bucaneer than ship's officer. DM approved heartily; and he's been kind enough to allow me to add green flame blade as a cantrip, which bards usually don't get. So I can be flashy as I wield my rapier on those rare occasions that I do ...
@doppelgreener not enough sleep/caffeine? That’s usually the cause of my inability to type properly
@Derpy That hat actually goes pretty good
@BardicWizard definitely not enough sleep today
16:56
@doppelgreener is it morning where you are? If so I recommend caffeine. If it’s evening I recommend going to bed when you can. Some combination of those has solved almost a third of my problems this week
@BardicWizard 5pm :)
i had coffee about an hour ago though!
i stayed up last night packing boxes.
I helped my borther in law move heave furniture over the weekend.
My arms wanted to die on monday.
@doppelgreener congrats on finding a new place! I know that was stressful, must be excited :)
i was on a roll, so i kept going, and then suddenly it was 3am
5 minutes prior to punching out for lunch "Hey, can you do [20 minute project] before you go to lunch? I meant to send it in 2 weeks ago and forgot!"
16:59
@NautArch not certain yet! the contract isn't signed. the final step might be tomorrow.
