4:00 PM
(I am amused by the question's premise that anything is designed for game balance reasons when discussing 20th level features)

BUt this also feels dangerously close to a designer's reason request
that too
these are things for above and beyond the max level

yeah it's a bit borderline but it is at least actually asking "what are the game balance implications", not "why is it this way"

Interested to see if anyone can answer this well

4:18 PM
@Carcer Am I missing something that hexblades and celestials have unlimited healing?
because I'm pretty sure they dont.

celestial pact warlock would have unlimited healing possibly with a boon of spell mastery, since they can know cure wounds
hexblade I think gets access to the smite spells?

yeah, the hexblade gets smite spells
ah, okay.

so yeah I think their point is that "warlocks can do those things with spell mastery so denying them can't be the balance reason"

Or it was, and with the advent of celestial and hexblade WoTC later said "whatevs"

though I'd be tempted to note that warlocks couldn't do those in the core, celestial and hexblade are both
yeah, that.

4:21 PM
They've addeda bunch of now official stuff I never would have thought passed muster

even the much vaunted bounded accuracy won't protect 5e from power creep forever
2

Not if WoTC has their say!

GcL
Seems like they feel new mechanics must be included in their products. Power creep seems inevitable.

traditionally that's what people buy D&D splatbooks for
more spells pls

GcL
The original unearthed arcana had some wonderful and not powerful spells. I ported the health bar one to 5e. Basically gives the caster the ability to tell how many HP a creature has. Switch creature as a bonus.

4:32 PM
I'm almost certain there's a 3e version of that one
I might be thinking of Pathfinder's Deathwatch

GcL
Similar, yeah. Instant state check.

Ugh, starting to look at Tomb of Horrors. The first entry is looking for the opening.
each 10' wide space takes 10 minutes. And then an hour to expose anything they find.

GcL
I also ported sneeze to 5e, but made it somatic only because it's a 1st level spell that just makes a target sneeze.

But there are no mechanics for what happens in that time.
I'm thinking random encounters every hour?

GcL
Very diplomatic specialization spell. Still some of the older players got a kick out of finding it.

4:35 PM
@GcL non-concentration?

@NautArch limited supplies would put pressure on the party to hurry up and find a place

GcL
@NautArch Probably better to just narrate the tedium. Let them be bored out of their minds trying to find the entrance such that they're happy for something, anything to happen... until they regret that in short order.

@GcL Oooh, i'm kinda digging that. Just don't want to begin the module with pure frustration. But...that's kind of what this module is.

IIRC the thing that's important there is that there is more than one entrance that you can find to the tomb, so which one you locate and go through matters

GcL
@NautArch I think it was a 2nd level spell for a minute. No concentration. I'd make it concentration for a 1st level. I might have made it L1 with conc.

4:36 PM
@Carcer yup
@GcL I think non-con actually is better. It's just a bonus action to find out something that many tables provide generalities on (like we usually say if a monster is bloodied at 50% HP)

GcL
@NautArch The original was built to be a TPK most of the time, no?

And I'll say if a monser is hurt more thana nother.
@GcL Still is. Having them create 2 characters to start. And then create a new backup when one dies.
That way we can generally keep things going.

@NautArch I was under the impression the 3e+ versions were designed to be a bit less harsh

GcL
Well, at least they kept the theme of don't go in here with characters you expect to live.

@Carcer There is still very much random death as part of this.
Like puzzles with no clear logic, but if they get it wrong, they die.

GcL
4:39 PM
Sounds about right. "Oh, you ate the yellow pill? poor choice. You die."
Although in 2e, you had a cadre of henchmen usually. Also, if you could avoid the wizard dying, you were probably in okay shape.

At least one smart guy realized they should be taking the Dungeon Delver feat.

GcL
My vague recollection of that skull tomb was that 10' poles didn't help much.
And usually henchman with a 10' pole saved the part from a lot of problems.

@GcL I'm sure there's nonsense like floor tiles that open up pit traps 10 feet behind them

a couple of players are looking at small PCs with medium mounts. I've given the okay, but warned that mounts can die and there aren't replacements.

GcL
@NautArch Mounts inside the dungeon? You keep your donkey train guarded at the entrance and use scroll of floating disc to transport out the 55,000 damned copper coins you find.

4:43 PM
@GcL well, medium sized mounts. Same size as PCs.

GcL
Which reminds me, I need to find the weight of coins I worked out for 5e. That's something that should have been in the DMG from the start.

I handwave that stuff.

GcL
So mount fails the dex save, both die?

most likely
problem solved!

GcL
I do until there's actually 20k silver coins the players want and they're a two day march into a hostile demi-plane of the Underdark Kyber
My joy is forcing choices with no clear good/bad metric. Also, usually saves me 5 minutes of talking whilst they talk among themselves. Sometimes I get verklempt.

4:54 PM
@linksassin and anyone else who does homebrew analysis; would you mind taking a look at my analysis here and let me know if I missed something glaring? One of my players wants to play the class

Q: Are Vengeful Ancestors' damage-dealing reactions enough to sustain the Barbarian's rage?

gtoTo sustain their rage at the end of their turn, a Barbarian must have attacked a hostile creature since their last turn or must have taken damage since then. [PHB, pg. 48] In the level 14 feature of the Primal Path of the Ancestral Guardian, "Vengeful Ancestors," the spirits called by the Barbari...

Q: How do I calculate the volume of a given quantity of coins?

Pink SweetenerQuestion A rectangular chest is filled to the brim with 1,000 unevenly piled gold coins, each weighing one third of an ounce. How big is that chest? Is there a formula I can use for routinely calculating the volume of a given quantity of coins? Context Some of the players in my group are, bl...

Also "A standard coin weighs about a third of an ounce, so fifty coins weigh a pound." (in the Basic Rules)

GcL
That's useful. Thanks.

5:11 PM
@DavidCoffron I disagree with the Nano Sense. It is basically a feat, but I found deflect missiles to no be a great thing, but highly situational.

5:21 PM
Nanosense always give the +5 to initiative

5:32 PM
Also, is there a specific subclass theyare going to pick?

@NautArch That's pretty strong.

@Yuuki on the flipside, the class doen't et stunning strike
so that may be a good trade

I'm pretty surprised that it doesn't, given that it's clearly based on Spider-Man and Miles Morales has that whole "venom strike" thing going on.

@NautArch Haven't chosen; but they are obviously unbalanced with each other
Symbiote is much stronger than Nano Evolution

@DavidCoffron ah, okay. just would make it a bit easier if there was a path they knew they wanted to take.

5:44 PM
@NautArch Yeah; like if they really wanted to choose Nano Evolution, I'd be much more accepting since it is less likely he will outshine the other characters. Idk; I'm closer to the "no it doesn't fit the setting" anyway.
It's standard Forgotten Realms, so it would take some gymnastics to make it make sense in the setting

@MikeQ I'll not be able to figure out my glitch until this weekend, in terms of pre stocking your summons. Will try to get an answer by Sunday Evening.

@DavidCoffron we're so setting independent I can't help there :)

6:00 PM
I misread Boon of Spell Mastery as Spoon of Bell Mastery and I guess I now know what magic item needs making

@Medix2 Spoon!!

@Medix2 so is it like those metal things you use to hit a metal bell on the outside to make it ring?
I forget what they’re called though

@BardicWizard I'd guess mallet or hammer but it might have some specific name too

@BardicWizard paging @nitsua60

6:56 PM
@Yuuki cool!
@Medix2 I want a character who plays the spoons

@AncientSwordRage SPOONY BARD

@Medix2 it's pronounced ThhhhhhSPOONY BARRRD

DO they wear a blue suit?
with antennae?

You've lost me

7:04 PM
@NautArch ahhh
My mind went to spoon guard

Q: How can my Bladesinger Wizard ensure that their spells cannot be avoided?

MegaCrowI have been playing a Bladesinger wizard in a fairly long running campaign, at least by my standards. There have been a lot of good moments but after my third attempt to make disintegrate work, I have realized something: everything worth using a big spell on probably has a good enough save that t...
