The thing with the paperclip game is that at least for me it freezes every 10 seconds
that's very annoying :(

i broke it somehow

broke how?

the screen got all flashy (epilepsy warning) and then half the UI disappeared.

did you buy the 100 trust thing?

maybe?
i was just buying upgrades willy nilly

12:06 AM
yeah that does it in browser version for some reason. it fixes itself after a min, anyway welcome to stage 2

Also I don't understand something
I'm producing about 100 clips per second more than I am selling
and somehow my inventory only goes down (?)
ARGH

the selling is on average

@Himitsu_no_Yami it should on average go up then though

Clearly you've got an employee sneaking clips on the side.

12:07 AM
up the price by like one or two cent and it will balance out
I think the game doesn't quite understand averages or something

by the way is there a non-broswer version that doesn't freeze every 10s? :P
I would love to play that instead

there's an android app but it's like $2

> Lifetime investment revenue report: $-142|

Sounds like March 2020.

> Lifetime investment revenue report: $28,054,937

no idea what you're talking about
my next important upgrade is gonna cost 64 million...

12:39 AM
welp shift was over almost 10 minutes ago and I didn't realize...
ah well, what's an extra $2 out of the company's pocket right

The more I read Wanderhome the more I love it.

@BESW that good?

So good.
I think it could be VERY good for our Cozy Games.

I really need to look at it

> Failure
You might notice that nothing Wanderhome tells you to do concerns itself with failure. This doesn’t mean you can’t fail. Indeed, you can choose to fail whenever you’d like. Instead, Wanderhome as a game isn’t preoccupied with failure. You don’t often fail in life. Sometimes, you struggle to do something, or get passed over, or do something you wish you hadn’t, or give up. Even those moments aren’t truly failures in a pejorative sense. Mistakes, maybe. Suffering at the cruelty of others. Listening to your body and your brain and accepting their natural limitations. But it doesn’t m

Sleepaway is too intense for me to be likely to ever play, and draws on experiences I don't have access to.

Jay Dragon wrote a twitter thread about "why I never say you're telling a story once, in all of Wanderhome."

2:27 AM
Yes, thank you.
Now I'm thinking about whether Wanderhome would mash up well with Space Is A Sea philosophies.

user15026
Space is a Sea?

I'm not gonna link it here anymore because the creator seems to be having some... struggles... with crediting their collaborators, so check your DMs.

user15026
@BESW ah, okay

But since I am one of those collaborators for that project, I'll say that the salient point for this conversation is that Space Is A Sea is rooted in thinking of travel as "visiting" rather than "exploring."

user15026
yes, I see that note, that makes sense

Q: Do familiars get death saving throws?

noltron000Do familiars summoned by the Find Familiar spell get to utilize Death Saving Throws, or do they die immediately when they reach 0 hit points?

I once made a sorcerer who learned nothing but AoE unfriendly fire spells, took features that gave him bonuses when he took damage, and a little bit of fire resist to blunt the pain. Main strategy: run into the middle of the enemy troops and fireball himself repeatedly.

So, one thing that confuses me about AoE spells and some of the wording in the 5e book
Is that I think if you're in your own AoE, you can choose not to affect yourself.

Only one?

One of many.
I've always erred on the side of "I probably still hit myself."
But there's a sentence in the book that says the following: "If you are in the area of effect of a spell you cast, you can target yourself."
It makes it sound like it's optional.
I guess that's exclusive to Targeting, which Fireball doesn't do

@BESW where do I read it?

btw how is the situation with the protection stuff? @Rubiksmoose @Someone_Evil
I went ahead and protected this question because, well, we have 2 deleted bad answers and another just arrived... And seems like one question many people would parachute in our site when googling or something.

@HellSaint hoping to get a Meta discussion going within the next couple of days. But I think people shouldn't wait on that to protect issues as they see them come up

GcL
@Rubiksmoose I think how many get protected for new issues arising answers the question, "how many of the unprotected questions do people find needing protection again?"
Probably more accurate to ask about the estimated rate of re-protection for now unprotected questions.
Also, can then ask, what are the similarities between questions that were deemed to require re-protection? and can those be used to discern a class of questions for which ongoing protection is recommended versus a class of questions for which temporary protection is sufficient.

@Ash @BESW wow this is really good stuff

@trogdor Cooooozy Gaaaaames.

My criteria in this case was quite simple: the question already has an accepted, well upvoted answer, I read the answers and I doubt there is anything good to add to the discussion, and there are 2 deleted bad answers (one from a 1 rep user, another from a deleted user, so idk what was their rep) and got 1 new bad anser from 1 rep user. Seems a perfect candidate :P

@trogdor I think I'd like trying to be a Shepherd. And I would totally model them after Shep of Dogskull Patch.

Who was that?

Shep is the enby ex-soldier who keeps goats and sheep and oxen on Ursula Vernon's land.
(Said land is called Dogskull Patch, on account of what she originally found a lot of while clearing it.)

Ooooh
That shep

@Ash Did you see that every Wanderhome playbook has the Journey Tools listed out?

I only know them as shep and everything else you said just confused me XD

Might be of interest, does anyone play games on supercomputers?
23
Q: Supercomputers around the world!

ThomasFor a matter modelling person, the most valuable resource is computing power. For many of us, computing power at hand limits the scale of problems we can solve. There are many national supercomputing facilities for academics. What are the resources available in each country?

user15026
@BESW I love this plan

user15026
@BESW yes, I liked that. Then you can't forget them!

@NikeDattani Hi! While some of us do play computer-program RPGs, this is a chat focused on tabletop RPGs which don't require dedicated computer tools, instead defaulting to physical tools like pencil, paper, dice, cards, maps, and minis, to organize and track the game.

Oh so that's what TR stands for in RPG?
Table Role?

Tabletop, yeah. Sometimes it's abbreviated TTRPG, for TableTop Role Playing Games.

4:09 AM
I see. I was familiar with the acronym RPG
Not with TRPG
So is "wing murderer" a TRBG?
Or "warewolf" ?

Haven't heard of the first one. The edges of TRPG tend to blur with things people call party games on one side, and board games on another. Werewolf-style games usually get lumped into the "party games" category, I think.

@AncientSwordRage huh?

@Trish The questions in that Hot Q are "Does EB travel in a straight line" and "Can my familiar help me avoid cover"?
current answers go with the title Q, but it's still not quite focused

11:14 AM
@AncientSwordRage I agree with you. Unfortunately I don't think its so egregious to be hit with the mod hammer so I left that comment and let the community decide. Looks like it will be staying open for now.

@linksassin that's fair

12:00 PM
@linksassin is it a good question to ask for a list of all spells that are affected by Spell Sniper?

@AncientSwordRage I'd say it's probably too broad. It's really asking for all spells with an attack roll

@linksassin I have questions about things like Magic Stone, but I know I'm going to find other edge cases

Q: Interaction between Subtle Spell, Initiative and Alert Feat

PearlI'm running a game and I'm trying to gank a few of my players with an NPC Sorcerer with Subtle Metamagic. However, one of the players has the Alert feat which states he cannot be surprised. Can I cast a subtle hold person with the sorcerer without any interference from the player with the Alert f...

so rather than ask lots of disparate questions, it made sense to me to put them in one question
some of them are obvious, but not all of them

@AncientSwordRage If you feel there are particular edge cases that aren't clear you can ask about those. But the general rule is just "does it require an attack roll? if so it works with spell sniper"

12:05 PM
@linksassin cool

BTW here's the list of spells that require an attack roll

@linksassin Yup, I saw that
But I'm guessing spell sniper doesn't effect, say Faithful Hound
Or Steelwind Strike

is dndbeyond working for you gys?
@AncientSwordRage Im in the stackizen campaign but I cant access the phb on dndbeyond

@ThomasMarkov I can see it

my sub expired, thats the problem

12:12 PM
weird, I don't have a subscription

i had too many characters for a non-sub
so it locked me out of some features till i fixed it

@AncientSwordRage Well I guess technically this is a better list
Range can only be doubled if it has a range

12:27 PM
@linksassin ahh much better
thanks
far fewer outliers than I initially thought
in fact basically 0 outliers

@AncientSwordRage The wording of the feat doesn't specify ranged or melee spell attack. Because there can be spells that require a melee spell attack and also have range. Thorn Whip for instance.
Steel Wind Strike is an interesting one
I think it technically should work for that.

@linksassin interesting

12:42 PM
seems like it.

in that case what other spells are covered by that

@AncientSwordRage Faithful hound clearly doesn't work because it is the hound making the attack rather than the caster.
Spiritual weapon works.

@linksassin M's Sword?

The problem is they don't clearly specify what happens to spells that have range self or touch

Isn't that the one that works weird with things like sword burst and thunderclap (we have a question on this somewhere)?

12:45 PM
@Medix2 yes

@AncientSwordRage Would work because it is the caster making the attack. But it's a terrible spell and shouldn't be used.

Q: Spell Sniper and Melee Spell Attacks With Range

MuditaManThe first benefit of the Spell Sniper feat says (PHB, p. 170; emphasis mine): When you cast a spell that requires you to make an attack roll, the spell’s range is doubled. Spells: Spiritual Weapon, Bigby's Hand, Mordenkainen's Sword Which of these spells have their range increased...

i just start to manage to tell you what years a WoD book is from by the company address XD

@Trish crazy

Oh I was thinking of this nvm

That said I don't actually agree with the answer to the question I just linked.

12:49 PM
@linksassin it seems inconclusive

@linksassin I agree with you.

@linksassin Hey, that reminded me of Grim Jim, who I know think might actually be fodder for a whole game on his own, since I'm in the microgame mood lately.

Spell Sniper is also weird in that it doubles the range (a very specific thing) of a spell that requires an attack roll. I don't think the wording makes room for weirdness but probably somewhere like Bigby's Hand doesn't require an attack roll but.....
It's one of I think three features with one-off wording about attacks (Whirlwind Strike / Volley and Sneak Attack being the other two I know)

@Medix2 I think that is an overly obtuse reading of the rule. "Requires a spell roll" to me means that you have to make an attack roll to attack with it rather than having a save.

@linksassin Oh yeah agreed. I'd say "requires an attack roll" means "requires an attack roll when you cast it"

12:52 PM
Agreed that bigdy's hand is weird though.
@Medix2 Hmm... I'm not sure I agree. I think if it requires an attack roll at any point it's range is doubled.

@linksassin Is there any spell that requires an attack roll non-immediately?

@Medix2 Magic stone?

Me... Realizing "requires" could mean "inevitably involves" or "can force to have happen"

@Medix2 Spiritual weapon? You can make an attack roll. you don't have to

Crown of stars?

12:54 PM
Yeah those are all optional hence my previous message
But crown of stars would gain no benefit since its range is Self and magic stone is touch
Curse you Spell Sniper and your one-off wording

Wall of light?

Doesn't apply either. The range is 120 and isn't used for that attack
Spiritual Weapon certainly does though
I'm realizing Distant Spell has a lot more weirdness than Spell Sniper

@Medix2 Sphere of Storms

does spell sniper with distant spell let you do touch spells out to 60?

@ThomasMarkov yes I think so

1:03 PM
@ThomasMarkov There's gotta be a question on that, right?

lets look, if not I think its a good one to ask

But yeah... thunderclap, witch bolt, compulsion, counterspell... Weird cases for Distant Spell

im not seeing a question on it

@ThomasMarkov Is it? I'm not sure why it wouldn't work

seems like it should work

1:05 PM
Oh hmmm, I'm finding people seeming to say Spell Sniper applies first...

should I ask?
I do have a sorcerer with distant spell and spell sniper
so this could come up for me this weekend

Including a link to those claims might make the question better

@Medix2 can you link this?

If you are finding claims on something which go counter to what you would expect from the rules, that a kind of actual problem we're often talking about

Both answers to this bring up things I hadn't thought about

1:09 PM
@Medix2 Ohh I like the way the top answer formatted its tweets

@Someone_Evil IKR?! Gotta learn that. I'm surprised it looked alright on mobile honestly

@Someone_Evil I actually stole the formatting from this exact answer for a bit I think. But then I just got lazy. I also think it is a bit noisier than it needs to be (specifically in the name and twitter handle). It looks sharp though.

im just going to use inflict wounds as the use case, to keep the question focus off of other weird edge cases

Gosh darn it... I forget the yellow quote boxes are gone sometimes since they're still there on mobile :(

does that seem like a good idea?

1:11 PM
@Rubiksmoose I'd probably remove the double naming thing in my own versions, and you edited exactly for that XD

@Medix2 ninja'd XD

@ThomasMarkov I'd rather just "touch range spells" and give inflict wounds as the example but maybe that's bad for some reason?
I just know that you might ask about inflict wounds and somebody else might ask about chill touch and then somebody won't think they should be dupes

I do really like the way you don't have to integrate the link into some external sentence though. Makes it more obvious where the link to the tweet is.

@Medix2 I figured inflict wounds was an appropriate canonical example that should cover most spells.
but yeah, ill make it generically "touch spells with melee attack rolls" and use inflict wounds as the use case example

@Rubiksmoose The timestamps are probably what I don't like cuz it'll vary by location but I can always throw in an EST or whatever it is

1:14 PM
@Medix2 Im not sure the precise time of day will ever be important to an answer though, right?

@ThomasMarkov Exactly, so I'd either include a time zone or remove the timestamp entirely. Though... The day could also vary by location, but what's ± 1?

@Medix2 that's a decent point. I'd probably drop the time altogether. The date is the most important part IMO
@Medix2 Now this time you got me lol

Question title: "Can a sorcerer with the feat spell sniper use the distant spell metamagic to cast a touch-range spell requiring a melee attack roll from a range of 60 feet?"
look good?

@ThomasMarkov I'd say Spell Sniper feat personally.

1:17 PM
you got it

Inb4 they release a touch range spell requiring a ranged attack and ruin your question

Inflict wounds does say "a creature you can reach", but specific (distant spell) beats general (typical use of inflict wounds), right?

I think you'd better ask the question so it can be answered in full

looks like inflict wounds, contagion, and shocking grasp are hte only spells this applies to at all
I may have to ask about inflict wounds and contagion, if they work with distant spell at all

heh, due to a comment I just found my favortite little footnote about 5e's sometimes deceptive spell names:
> 1 - A few examples: Catnap, does not put creatures to sleep. Sacred flame does not do fire damage. Chill touch does not do cold damage and is also not a touch spell. Daylight does not actually create sunlight.

whats the criteria for the review your question button? It seems pretty arbitrary sometimes. It said the question im about to post is subjective and likely will be closed.

I assume there's some regex which tries to guess that, so it's probably looking for certain keywords or phrases

@ThomasMarkov Countless touch spells describe touching your target which Distant Spell ignores (there's a question on it somewhere)

@Medix2 i need that one then lol before I post a dupe

Q: Is it redundant that a vampire's Regeneration is stopped by damage from holy water, since holy water already does radiant damage to undead?

KirtVampires and vampire spawn have the Regeneration trait (MM 297-298), but: If the vampire takes radiant damage or damage from holy water, this trait doesn't function at the start of the vampire's next turn. Holy water (PHB 151) allows you to make a ranged attack with it as an improvised weapon, ...

@V2Blast It seems like your edit on this meta question changes the question itself as the original didn't specify that information in the question. By adding it, it seems more like that content was already specified when it wasn't.

@NautArch What content? As far as I can tell, all those things are in the original form of the question

Hello internet friends, how are we doing today

Does anyone know of any non-ERP West March groups that would be a safe place for a friend of mine? They had to leave their group over some rough personal drama and they're gonna have a big gap missing where this past group was.

I don't but I wish them the best of luck

@ACuriousMind @ThomasMarkov Yeah. It's unfortunately really common and I know he doesn't like to partake or being around it.

It also tends to breed a weird social dynamic

@MikeQ I played with a group where one character owned several shops in the main town

I have to say, not assuming the system on some of these questions is hard for me (like this familiar one)

4:30 PM
I can understand that well, I just didn't know what the acronym stood for :P

@Himitsu_no_Yami I've at least learned not to open a per-question Meta since it'll just vote for not adding the tag, sometimes, maybe...

@Himitsu_no_Yami That's actually not that egregious of one to me. Lots of systems have familiars, polymorph, etc. And the claim that a familiar does not have a level nor CR does not automatically align with our presumed system 5e

GcL
@ThomasMarkov I've discovered two of my regular players are very much fans of economic simulation with the occasional negotiation with a medusa thrown in.

I know, I just have a tendency to assume anything that looks like it could be 5e maybe possibly just is 5e

I think that was one of the arguments made for keeping the policy?

GcL
4:37 PM
@Himitsu_no_Yami Given the prevalence of those posts on this site, that is a decent heuristic.

(not you specifically, obviously)

@Someone_Evil I mean we also know the question states shapechangers are immune to polymorph and that familiars can't attack

The policy is good and I agree with it, it's still hard for me at time though lol

GcL
@Someone_Evil I think the combination of polymorph, familiar, CR, level does point to a D&D version, but could be PF or 4e or even 3.5

There are parts of it I don't agree with, or at least counter-arguments to the arguments made to keep it but there really isn't anywhere to put those
I should really start taking screenshots of demonstrable harm caused by the current policy instead of saving links only for the comments showing the harm to be deleted... New Plan Starting Today

4:44 PM
So, in my NG+ run of paperclips I'm farming creativity before I move on to stage 3 and I found a simple way to bypass the whole bored swarm bit

GcL
@Medix2 That's a good point. A great deal of the chatter gets deleted.
I wonder if looking at the rate of first time OP that get closed for clarity never coming back. First time closure exclusion rate.

The swarm only gets bored if there's no available matter, so if you leave them on 100% think while there's still matter around (even if they're not harvesting it), they don't get bored

Oh question. I saw comments saying that the general greeting thing of "welcome, see the tour, help center...[other stuff]" can be perceived as condescending. Is there a way to avoid that?

@Medix2 That is certainly part of why this is so difficult to handle, the data on every side is extremely difficult to gather. You have to do it real-time essentially.

GcL
@Medix2 Compiling that data set would make yours the only one available, as deleted comments aren't available in the publicly accessible data set nor API. So you might want to keep samples where disenfranchisement wasn't the result. Specifically, if you notice some where the OP thanks the commenters or subsequently changes the tag themselves as a result of the comment discussion
@Rubiksmoose Or have the people deleting the comments do it.

4:52 PM
@GcL Yup yup yup
Can mods see messages deleted from chat?

@Medix2 We can

GcL
Hack together a script for cache & delete comments to make it easy lemon squeezey

At least we can anywhere on the SE chat server. Not the SO or MSE ones unless we are also mods there.

@Rubiksmoose Awesome good to know. It's surprisingly difficult to figure out what Mods can and can't do...

@Medix2 That it is! Even we learn new things pretty regularly lol
@GcL Never actually done any scripting before.

Unfortunately I don't think it's something I couldn't do for you, as I don't have visibility to those end points. Otherwise I'd make a little grease monkey script to insert something convenient into the page. Not sure where to stuff the deleted comments though. I think that would be the most difficult part.

5:17 PM
Indeed. Well I'll think on it. I have some people mod-side I could tap for some help for a project if we thought it would be beneficial and when I had time.

1 hour later…
6:20 PM
@Rubiksmoose do you need a hand?

@AncientSwordRage At the moment, I don't really have a clear idea of what would be the best way to approach the issue. But I appreciate the offer!
Also suggestions welcome :)

@Rubiksmoose when I learn what the issue is, I'll be glad to offer suggestions :p

How are people? I’m in a really good mood because I made cupcakes! It’s almost enough to make me forget how many rpg sessions I can’t play this weekend (1 got canceled by the GM, the other only has me and the two players and one of them can’t make it, so I don’t have any gaming this weekend for the first time in almost a month)

GcL
@BardicWizard What are you even going to do with yourself?!

7:47 PM
@BardicWizard you get used to it....now those cupcakes ... :D
@Himitsu_no_Yami found it

8:20 PM
@GcL probably plan Monday’s session...

I made a comment on a -20 answer with advice on how to improve it.

Hope springs eternal

It was more probing into the reasoning behind the answer which baffled me considerably.

I like your method on that opt question. I had a one off setting the eAC var and nearly stared myself blind on the resulting graph (that that comment and its mistake)

8:36 PM
I enjoyed writing "left as an exercise to the reader" in an answer :p

8:46 PM
@Someone_Evil can 10ks comment on deleted answers?

Pretty sure that's a diamond only power
How so?

how so what?

Is there a particular reason you are asking?

If a character had a quirk that they could never use the letter X in speech and writing, how long would it take before you or your table would notice?

@Axoren Notice that something was up? Fairly quickly as you'd be spending a lot of time wording very carefully, or talk wrong. What exactly you're doing, longer, massively depending on the group
Assuming you play out conversations and don't narrate them, in which case they'll notice as soon as you state the character is doing it
