Q: If a Necklace of Fireballs with 9 beads is thrown, is the resulting Fireball effect equivalent to a 9th-level casting, or an "11th-level" casting?

K.L.R.This question arises because the section on Spell Level in the PHB states: Every spell has a level from 0 to 9 However, the necklace of fireballs can have up to 9 fireballs on it, and its description says: You can hurl multiple beads, or even the whole necklace, as one action. When you ...

That you've accepted (and are bountying) the answer makes me feel like you're comfortable with the implicit assumption in it: that the archer is part of a 4-5 PC party. (If solo, their combats would be hella-lot longer, or there'd be a lot more of them as they have to snipe and break off, snipe and break off....)
I think that's a reasonable assumption for the answerer to have made, and one that you should make explicit in the question.

@nitsua60 You're right. I keep forgetting that not all groups are ideal-sized.

@Axoren And I'm not saying I think that there's a best size for that module; just that the number assumed in the party definitely affects the theory-crafting of an answer.

Past readers may remember my slowly simmering worldbuilding... my current Q is about scale - both of time and distance. How big should my 2 warring elvish nations be? How long ago, considering one of them evolved into Drow-equivalents since then? I think dragonborn empire should be before then? And/or on a different continent?
It's funny, I keep trying to think of what's going on "now", and end up adding stuff to the far past...

Q: What is the earliest that a PC can gain invisibility?

jvriesemWhat is the earliest level that a player character (PC) can gain the ability to become invisible without the aid of external items/scrolls/etc.?

Well I think knowing stuff about the past can be useful in extrapolating what is currently going on
In world building and such

5:51 AM
So I'm kind of working on a plotline that's not a clear good vs evil - new human kingdom ruled by son of founder, vs native orcs under vengeful warlord. I want the orc leader to be obviously a bad guy, but not the orcs as a whole. Ideal outcome will be kill leader, negotiate peace (, deal with vengeful relative...).
The ancient elf war probably won't have any bearing on plot, but does help shape the world. Dragonborn empire may be source of artifacts to fight BBEG, though. I'm also trying to work out why the dragonborn empire fell, & where the descendents are now... thinking maybe civil war, but not sure

A civil war sounds like a pretty dragonborn thing to happen
XD
They can be pretty arrogant even with each other

In 4e, the dragonborn empire fell after winning a Phyrric victory over an evil tiefling empire.

True
They also had Tiamat cultists undermining them though

Presumably; the "official" lore didn't really specify that, I added it to our campaign because it made sense in my version of events.

6:28 AM
I want to ask a question, but I am afraid that this stack exchange will burst into flames at my asking of it. So I am going to ask it here to get opinions first.
"If you glue a note to an arrow, then fire it into battle, can you recover the note?"

@BESW ah fair enough, i forget sometimes we added cool things into that history

@AmethystWizard In most game systems there wouldn't be a clear mechanic for handling that ruling. In most of my games I'd just allow it, unless failure would be at least as interesting.
@trogdor [grin] Aside from a bit of fudging the timeline, I didn't remove much at all from the "official" lore, but most of that time period is so vague that I had to embellish so I figured I might as well be as awesome as possible.

Yeah, thinking about 5e - the question encompasses a few interesting areas. If an object is glued to another object, does that change it's nature, or are they still separate as far as adjudicating what happens. I suppose I would get a answer such as "the DM decides" but what interests me is actually parsing it out.

6:52 AM
@BESW it was pretty cool

I mean, "up to the DM" is probably the best answer you'll get. The Ammunition property just says "At the end of the battle, you can recover half your expended ammunition by taking a minute to search the battlefield." It doesn't say whether the other half can be found but is broken/damaged beyond the point of usability, or totally lost, or something else. So whether the thing attached to the arrow is recoverable seems to depend entirely on that.

Yeah true, I created a chat room to continue the discussion rather than to ask on the stack chat.stackexchange.com/rooms/104828/the-arrow-room
for those who like esoteric 5e rules stuff
If I were DM, I would create a new category of items, meta objects, things that are non magical but seemingly break the physics of the d&d universe.

Q: Why is the PHB Ranger considered underpowered?

AndrendireIt seems that both the community and Wizards of the Coast are largely in agreement that the PHB Ranger class is underpowered compared to the other classes. What exactly makes it underpowered compared to other classes? More specifically, how does the 2019 UA class feature variant Ranger improve ...

@AmethystWizard Esoteric or pedantic? because I only like the combination if we're talking about putting together a formal ontology.

2:00 PM
Yes haha, that we are.

2:22 PM
@AmethystWizard It's probably ask-able, but it's going to be "ask your DM"
You're straying from rules at that point (with attaching something to an arrow), so it'll be up to the DM to determine what happens.

Where does two objects become one is something that 5e, for better or worse, doesn't offer almost any guidance for one thing.

And the idea of 'recovery' is also slightly different. Just like with AC, not 'hitting' can be narratively explained as either hit but not hurt or miss, recovery could be you found it, but you can't use it again.
for reason

GcL
@AmethystWizard Entirely depends on the player and DM. If the player has a history of asking oblique questions about ammo recovery, the answer is "better shoot two". If it's a clever solution to a plot hurdle and advances the story, the answer is likely "sure, let's figure out how difficult of a shot it is."

Yeah. Personally, I've never even tracked ammo in a game (well recently anyways; never in 5e). I find it to be not fun for every game/group I've played with. So unless they have some magical ammo that is super special, I don't even bother with it.

@Rubiksmoose I started tracking ammo with my group...and then stopped.
Same with rations. It's just a mechanic that's easily resolved by buying more of something.
Oh, you need rations for a trip, buy more rations. Oh, you need ammo? Buy more.
Just seems like an unnecessary gate

2:28 PM
Agreed.

GcL
It's been useful to me for players that would otherwise just treat any situation as a siege given limitless ammo.

I mean, i'll track a special limited use ammunition. But mundane? Nah.

GcL
Also ones that like to constantly care all their equipment.

@GcL But when you can carry an obscene amount of ammo and items given a reasonable strength score, it's just seems like an unnecessary step unless someone wants to track it.

GcL
Which got ridiculous when a couple characters were otherwise always carrying a crowbar and battering ram.
@NautArch You can carry a lot of ammo, but not accessible ammo. Quivers are where the weight gets you for not str based archers.

2:31 PM
@GcL Yeah that seems like one way to handle that tactic assuming you want to dissuade them from it.

@GcL Meh. Up to the player for me. I don't see a reason to limit what a ranged character can do vs a melee character.
Unless the ranged player really wants those limits.
Or a ranged martial vs a ranged caster.

GcL
@NautArch Had a mid level ranger that would have otherwise been able to shoot everything nearly all the time. 20 shots is a lot of shots for most characters that will get 1/round.

@Rubiksmoose This, but I can see it depending on a campaign. Lots of my games have operated under the implicit assumption the players have a place to re-supply and don't have little enough cash they'd need to worry about not affording things.

GcL
Rangers and rogues where the two characters that pushed the limitless ammo issue for me.

(or they have a patron who gladly pays their expenses)

2:36 PM
I dunno. Limitless cantrips are fine. So I'm good with limitless ammunition. I'm really having a hard time coming up with a reason to say at some point in a fight "Well, you're out of ammo unless you want to spend your turn getting more".
But everyone else? Yeah, y'all are good.

@kviiri For sure. Though I personally don't think the 5e does a good job making survival-type games any fun. So I'd usually avoid any campaigns where this was an integral part.

@Rubiksmoose We are in agreement there. And NautArch has a good point too, about limitless cantrips vs limitless ammo.

and in context you go through ammunition so slowly
in your average D&D fight how many arrows does an archer even fire
a dozen?

GcL
@NautArch The casters with decent ranged cantrips don't get martial abilities and usually don't have a melee alternative. Saddling up to the rogue was an exercise in getting stabbed and dealing with dodge. Getting in melee range of the warlock was really bad news for the warlock.

that's not worth worrying about

GcL
2:38 PM
@Carcer six until they get a second attack for my group.

I like abstract resources, in general, more than concrete ones. Eg. some game I recall having a system where one has at most a "d12" of something. When they use those resources, they roll: a 1 or 2 results in the die size falling by one. (Resulting in running out completely after d4)

yeah, exactly. Combat tends to be over in less than a minute and there's only so many arrows you can shoot.

GcL
@kviiri That seems reasonable.

@GcL They can cast a cantrip that effectively turns the multiple attacks that the martials get into a single attack with equivalent damage. It's just less attack rolls.

@Carcer And then you get roughly half of them back.

2:38 PM
That sounds intriguing for tracking resources that one has "a lot" of, at least --- I mean, stuff that can plausibly run out but whose usage is still hard-ish to measure.

GcL
@NautArch It's limitless ammo too, but at the cost of being much squishier.

@GcL Have never tried it, though :)

@NautArch eldritch blast has equivalent damage, but for other cantrips not really

GcL
@Carcer Firebolt was the goto for my groups.

a 3d10 firebolt sounds impressive but a specialist wizard gets to add ability score mod once

GcL
2:40 PM
@Carcer It's a decent default while maintaining a concentration spell.

whereas a fighter making three attacks with a d10 weapon is doing 3d10+15 if all hits

In a similar vein I like how AW doesn't bother with the "gold piece" tracking but you just have "globs" of barter as the base unit of wealth, and only significant expenses are enough to actually reduce that. It's not my favorite money mechanic but it's the first alternative one I found, and that gives it a veneer of nostalgy.

@Carcer which is kind of like another d10

@kviiri would you like to hear about d20 modern and the Wealth Modifier

@Carcer Yeah, but a fighter can't drop a fireball three or four times a day (just an action surge for +3d10+15)

@DavidCoffron only one attack? A surging fighter gets a complete extra Extra Attack.

GcL
@DavidCoffron And the wizard won't last three or four rounds in melee with ogres. They make a nice combo together though.

oh there you go

@Carcer Yeah, I fixed it

and your stealth edits

2:42 PM
@Carcer Well, you don't get the ability modifier added to damage, but the dice scale. BUt the modifier is legit.

@GcL Depends on the wizard. Shield + Bladesong or War Magic can go a long way.
Plus, you could always use Tenser's transformation to wear armor just like the fighter.

GcL
@DavidCoffron A well prepared wizard is a force to be reckoned with for sure. The martial classes are more generalists for dealing with whatever crops up.
@DavidCoffron if you prepared it.

@GcL That's a fair way to spin it.

GcL
Then you're walking around in armor and kind of have to use it. Which is a departure from how I remember previous editions of that spell.

@GcL You don't have to be walking around in armor. You can always don it before a fight you expect to use Tenser's in (although once again, fighters are more generally capable)

GcL
2:46 PM
@DavidCoffron The my recollection of the old version is that it gave you a boatload of HP, an AC equivalent to decent armor, and turned your staff into a magic longsword. The 5e version gives you proficiency in armor... which means you have to have already been wearing it.

Transformation is one of the worst spells IMO. You're a wizard, do Wizard things, not Fighter things.

@GcL nods, but you don't "have to use it" always. You just don't wear the armor until you're ready to use it
@RevenantBacon I think it is a very powerful spell actually. +2d12 force damage on two attacks with advantage is extremely powerful
Especially if you dual wield

GcL
@DavidCoffron True. If you've got time to prepare. It's 10 minutes to put on armor?

@GcL I think so.

Except that you're still an unarmored wizard with d6 hit dice. Sure, you get 50 temp HP, but that's like 2 rounds worth of hits at best. Plus, the spell is concentration.

GcL
2:48 PM
@RevenantBacon It used to be a hell of a spell.

10 min for heavy, 5 for medium, 1 for light
but why ever wear light armor when you can cast Mage armor?

@GcL Medium might be better if you have 14 Dex (which I recommend getting some of anyway for Initiative and mage armor). Then you don't have to invest in Strength to avoid moving speed drop

And you can;t actually use heavy armor, as it takes as long to put on as the spell lasts

@RevenantBacon You can put it on before casting the spell

GcL
@RevenantBacon You put it on before you cast the spell. Which is what I think really nerfed the spell.

2:50 PM
@GcL Oh wait! no you can't, can't cast spells in armor that you aren't proficient in

the spell gives you a bunch of stuff that sounds nice in theory but doesn't hold up to any amount of scrutiny

GcL
@DavidCoffron That's a good point.

Um, no, you can't. If you are wearing armor that you are not proficient with, you can't cast spells
@DavidCoffron I saw that edit
:p

@RevenantBacon I still think that the weapon prof plus the 2d12 damage on attacks is strong enough on its own, especially with a defensive subclass like Abjuration, Bladesinging, or War Magic
(although Bladesinging already gets Extra Attack, so not quite as big of a buff for the subclass)

Sure, the 2d12 force damage is nice, but then I have to be in melee, as a Wizard t hurt the guy. So we're looking at a potential 4d12+weaponx2(probably d8) + str x2 (porbably +0)

2:53 PM
@RevenantBacon You could use ranged weapons

Alternatively, I could be on the other side of the room, and launch a Fire Bolt for 3d10
@DavidCoffron Fair enough I guess
It's still a pretty bad spell unless you're fighting something with resistance to everything. Even then, it's not great
Now, if we could throw this on an actual Fighter. But it's self only.

@RevenantBacon I don't see where that's coming from. Over 10 minutes it is very strong damage-wise (if multiple fights are expected)

Yeah, but again, it's concentration, so no other buffs in the meanwhile
and it can be ended mid fight by a bad roll

@RevenantBacon This is definitely going to outshine haste + vitriolic sphere (a similar investment of spell slots, with another buff)
Especially if, like I recommend, you grab Resilient (Constitution) after maxxing Intelligence
If you are keeping range with a longbow then you won't be forced to make too many Concentration saves

GcL
Found the OG version of the spell. The reason it used be be nice was that you used the combat stats of an equivalent level fighter. So your ThAC0 was way better and your staff became a +2 weapon.

3:02 PM
It is comparable in damage output and defensive bonus to an 8th level haste (assuming 2.5 fights in 10 minutes vs 1 fight in 1 minute). +6d10+30 per round for 8th level haste vs +4d12 per round for Tenser's transformation. ~63 on haste vs ~65 on Tenser's.
(I'm considering advantage about equal to the higher Strength or Dexterity of the fighters)

@Carcer What's that?

Then the Temporary Hit Points on the wizard and (and +2 AC from a shield if in melee) has to measure up to +2 AC on the 6 fighters, which I would argue it does fairly well (since you want to spread out the defensive benefits, and keep that wizard alive)

Am I being daft on this question or is it unclear? It seems like their really asking if someone can identify a spell being cast and that the scroll bit is a red herring.

@NautArch Definitely unclear
And the chat room discussing it makes it even more so

I asked in the chat about it rather than reopening comments.
And VTC'd.

3:09 PM
@RevenantBacon Advantage on Constitution saves helps mitigate this risk quite a bit

@DavidCoffron true

@NautArch I think it's a compound of questions but I think I see what they are asking

@SirCinnamon WHat do you think it is?

ugh, what a wasted weekend. I dislike intensely dealing with used car salesmen.

@JohnP I love negotiating.

3:16 PM
Can a caster identify what spell they are wanting to counter before deciding to counter it and if not, can I attempt to trick them by appearing to cast from a scroll when actually casting a spell and vice versa

Send me down next time :P

@NautArch Great. Next time you can come with me. I'm no good at it.

so really, "Does scroll casting differ visually from regular casting in any way other than physically holding up a scroll"

@kviiri D20 modern represents a character's purchasing power with an extra stat called the Wealth Modifier, which you use to make purchasing checks against a target DC (varying based on the expense) to determine whether or not you're able to finagle your finances into acquiring the item.

@SirCinnamon I think that would be a clearer question (if that's their question.)

3:17 PM
But, if I tell you I think my trade is worth net $1000 over my loan value, and you tell me you think it's worth $6000 less than that, there isn't a deal in the world that will work.

But bringing in the bits about bonus action vs action and the need to identify is where I think it's something else.

getting large financial windfalls raised your wealth modifier, spending beyond your means or suffering other setbacks reduced it.

@JohnP Nope, and if you've done your research and you are confident in it. Just walk out.

@Carcer Hm yeah, I've seen similar. It's also a nice solution in a few ways

@NautArch Yes, its not perfectly formulated for sure. My thoughts as a DM are that I wouldnt allow that trick BUT i would also feel like I had failed if this was something my players were thinking about doing haha

3:18 PM
@NautArch The last guy managed to get my keys from me, and having to say "NO, give me my keys back" several times is not going to incentivize me to buy a damned thing.
AND, the final nail, if you send in a guy with the offer sheet (crumpled up) to "save the deal" and he can't be bothered to remember my name that is printed on said offer sheet, then you've lost all chance of anything.

I like the idea of wealth being essentially a "another way to solve problems", on par with skills and such.

@SirCinnamon We've done a lot of things with spell identification when I had a character that was a big counterspeller. BUt we ended up with no identification.
Which generally works, but is really frustratingw hen the DM counterspells...because they know.
I've only been counterspelled once in our current campaign, but if it happens again I'm going to just have to do what we did in the previous and always start with "I'm casting a spell...do you want to do anything?"

@NautArch Yeah, its not a great solution. because as a DM how are you supposed to make an objective decision about counterspell when you KNOW they're using the biggest spell. Yeah saying "i'm casting a spell" is the best solution probably... but quite inconvenient

@SirCinnamon Yeah, I was kinda miffed when I went to cast hold person on a big bad guy that I think was a plot device. I had a portent ready for them to fail their roll, too.
But I'll ask the DM if they plan on continuing to use counterspell against me. If so, I'll just have to start every round with "i'm casting a spell, you want to do anything?"
which is really annoying.

I personally wouldn't run enemies with counterspell, unless I had a particularly good reason

3:25 PM
@kviiri I think his reason on this one was he wasn't supposed to be caught/fought.

Yeah I only bring in counterspell very rarely

rare is almost worse because of the above.
i'm opting not to pick counterspell because I don't want to start that game again
but i am going to grab dispel magic next level

This discussion hasnt come up at my table but maybe i'll tell my casters at the start of the combat that the enemy knows counterspell

@SirCinnamon that's...a really good idea.
i'll request that
that way I don't have to be annoying (or be annoyed) every session

Its metagamey but better than nothing

3:27 PM
I get the motivation for Counterspell to exist, but it still doesn't really feel like a fun element of the game to me

better than frustration
@kviiri It's fun when you do it. less fun when it's done to you :)

although now that I think about it, if you say "Im casting a spell" and the DM says "I will counter" there should be a way to verify what you were going to cast...
not that I think you or any of my players would cheat but...
I guess you could just point the spell out to another player or something

When I DM a character with counterspell, I usually drop one counterspell against the first spell, and save another for a last minute before dying situation (or I devise a similar plan for a specific NPC). Then I use them no matter what the spell is; that way I don't have my NPC metagame.

@NautArch Well, certainly tactically strong, but I think "naw you don't, nothing happens" is a bit underwhelming in terms of feel and mood

@kviiri as someone who used it frequently, i very much enjoyed it.

3:29 PM
@DavidCoffron I was trying to devise some kind of "Roll a d6 on every spell cast and on a 6 counter it" kind of AI solution

@SirCinnamon that's interesting. Although it does mean you may be casting it more than planned.
but it does create more of a defined system.

You can definitely narratively spice it up.

"As the glowing bead condenses on your fingertip, the opponent quickly waves his hand and chants a glyph. A wave of viscous energy, the color of iron, wafts in front of your outstretched hand, snuffing the *fireball* before it flies"

@NautArch Or less depending on the length of the fight and number of casters. But it would certainly be fairer than the knowledge imbalance from DM to player

I recommend adopting something from Pathfider for counterspelling. Require that characters make an Arcana check to identify a spell as it is being cast.

@SirCinnamon Yeah, I kinda like it.
@RevenantBacon 5e has that as an optional rule...but it takes your reaction. Which negates the ability counterspell.
We also did try no-cost arcana checks.

3:31 PM
They don't have to succeed to be able to counter the spell, but they won't know if it was a spell worth countering if they fail

But ended up with just cast it or don't.
and then that also means you have tod ecide what level to cast it at

@RevenantBacon Counterspell? I 'ardly know 'er spell.

@NautArch Unless your familiar is doing the identifying for you (albeit probably with much less likelihood of success)

@DavidCoffron True. BUt at that point, you might as well just have it be no-cost.
I still generally prefer the option to cast it without knowing what it is. It's a harder decision to make, and I like hard decisions.

I don't think it should take a reaction to identify it. You're a practised user of magic. Does the fighter have to use a reaction to identify what kind of sword an enemy is holding?

3:34 PM
@RevenantBacon Yeah, but everyone does magic subtley different. In fact, the DC is pretty high in Xanathar's Guide to Everything (15 + spell level, which is between Hard and Impossible)

but I also don't think it should be automatic success to identify either

Spells are a bit more varied in appearance and effect than swords though.

You could narrate the spellcasting a way that reflects what spell is being cast. When an orc swings a sword, there's no signal for how much damage would be dealt, but the DM still communicates that a sword is involved.

You also have:
> If the spell is cast as a class spell and the character is a member of that class, the check is made with advantage.

Are they though? Most spells require a specific set of gestures and words intoned in a particular manner in order for the spell to succeed.

3:35 PM
does anyone know where to find a sortable beastiary list for pathfinder?

@RevenantBacon I disagree. Some spells do

@AmethystWizard re: this, I agree it won't be likely to be received well. I've left an answer to your meta that goes into more detail, but I suggest limiting your questions to actual situations you sincerely believe you will truly run into. The site doesn't function so well for esoterica asked essentially for its own sake. Opening a chat is a fine option.

@MageintheBarrel There's one on PFSRD. Go to their site and look up "advanced monster search".
...Yes, that one.

well, some spells don't erquire one or another component, but the components they have are still specific

3:36 PM
that page is dead

Last time I checked there was a link to an external google doc. Is that still there?

at least on my end it is

@RevenantBacon Nothing suggests that basic Somatic Components are specific to the spell, just intricate (perhaps specific to whatever practice that caster undergoes)
> Spellcasting gestures might include a forceful gesticulation or an intricate set of gestures. If a spell requires a somatic component, the caster must have free use of at least one hand to perform these gestures.

@MageintheBarrel I was acutally doing this last night, hold up, I'll get you a good one.

no link just says
Page Not Found - advanced-monster-search
Well, this is embarrassing, this address doesn't actually exist.

Please note that this issue has been automatically logged for fixing by the site administrators - there is no need to report it.

The some spells that do require some sort of gesticulation are like burning hands which says:
> As you hold your hands with thumbs touching and fingers spread, a thin sheet of flames shoots forth from your outstretched fingertips.

Q: Can Bladesingers combine: Bladesong + Double-Bladed Scimitar + Revenant Blade feat?

Jeffrey WittyCan Bladesingers combine: Bladesong + Double-Bladed Scimitar + Revenant Blade feat? I won't detail it heavily, but can an Elf and/or Half-Elf Wizard (Bladesinger) combine all these for enhanced benefit? Or do the benefits not "stack/combine"? Assume the campaign settings associated with the so...

d20pfsrd.com/bestiary/bestiary-hub/monsters-by-cr Here's a list of all Pathfinder monsters (1st and 3rd party) sorted by CR

@doppelgreener Although there have been some users who have asked (and gotten decent reception) to theoretical questions. GaelL is definitely one.
But in general, I also very much prefer real problems to solve.

I'm looking for a way to sort by size class

@Sdjz Oh, that spreadsheet is nice

@RevenantBacon My link goes to there too I think

@JohnP I thought I was pretty good, but then I met my brother in law. That dude is a master.

@DavidCoffron with my thumbs touching what?

But the key is knowing exactly what you want and that it's reasonable...and walking out if you don't get it.

3:40 PM
@DavidCoffron Yup, just more roundabout :p

A jar of petroleum jelly?
Is that what they call "fingers spread"?

@JohnP And also timing. End of quarter will always get you a better deal. End of year even moreso.

@Yuuki each other most likely. Although a jar of alchemists frie would be interesting too

@Yuuki Thumbs must be touching a spread, it seems. So maybe a jam or a buffet-style charcuterie.

ty that works

I keep remaking my character in Pathfinder: Kingmaker.
It's getting to be a problem.

Also, I need to uninstall mods, I guess, because some of the characters have stopped auto-leveling and I don't feel like doing charop for an entire 9-person party (even if you can only get 5 other people active at a time).

I do that alot too. Except I can't get the respec mod to work properly, so instead I just start the campaign all over
I'm on the first chapter for the 9th time. I think I may have a problem

Honestly, the most annoying thing about the respec mod (or at least the one I'm using), is that I have to reselect my portrait from literal hundreds I have installed.

Kinda wish Magus had a divine caster variant. Although I suppose that's Paladin?
I want to sub myself in for Harrim because he gets incredibly Debbie Downer-ish and I'd like to have Spontaneous Healing for spot/emergency healing.
Clerics have a 3/4 BAB progression though, IIRC.

@Yuuki Warpriest is the divine equivalent of Magus. Or parallel, maybe not equivalent. Paladin does fill a similar role, but warpriest's mechanics are closer to magus's.

Or Inquisitor.
That's one thing that annoys me a lot though.

Doesn't look like Inquisitor has spontaneous healing though.

Inquisitor is usually considered the divine counterpart to bard. Spontaneous caster, emphasis on skills and teamwork, special non-spell buffing feature.

There are a bunch of divine hybrid/hybrid equivalent classes, and very few arcane hybrids.

3:50 PM
Magus was released before "hybrid" class was a thing. However they are similar to the other hybrid classes, in that they get part fighter and part wizard.

I feel like the inquisitor is halfway between pally and cleric
and pally is basically half cleric half fighter, and warpriest is also half cleric half fighter.
meanwhile, for arcane we just have the magus, half wizard half fighter

There's also bard, bloodrager, summoner, and skald.

we have the bloodrager and Skald, but bloodrager is pretty bad (doesn't get its defining feature until like level 10) and Skald is really just a regular bard with better weapon selection.
I would NEVER call a summoner a arcane/martial hybrid.
They're basically just an eidolon with a pet buff caster

Not a hybrid, but they've got a d8 HD, simple weapons, and light armor. The "eidolon with a pet summoner" is the naive build and actually not optimal use of the class (because then it's just a specialized alternative to the conjurer).

so do bards?
my point is, not really a front-line hit-thing-with-weapons class
An optimal build of the summoner (chained or unchained) would probably be something along the lines of a face-tank minion, with the summoner laying down area control.
While any actual DPS characters do DPS. Like the Magus for example

3:56 PM
Nope. Optimal build is to optimize the summoner as a caster. Standard action summoning is more flexible than the eidolon is.
I imagine that it's trickier to find ways to reimplement the fighter/mage in an elegant way. Eldritch knight and magus seem to be closest to that concept.

Yeah, I've noticed that

Huh, so Seelah's going to be the Iconic in the next Pathfinder game? Like Amiri in Kingmaker.

Meanwhile, clerics don't have the built-in arcane failure chance nonsense, so they were by design expected to serve more of a martial role than mages. Hence the fighter/cleric, and then paladin. Heck, 3.5 clerics were better fighters than fighters were. Then Paizo decided to reinvent the wheel a few more times, and out came inquisitor and warpriest. All different approaches to the same "warrior priest" concept.

Ah, arcane failure. Along with the wizard's pathetic BAB progression, the reason why my transmutation specializing "fist wizard" couldn't take off.
