@Himitsu_no_Yami What level are you?
12
Also he just Power Word Killed one of my characters
@Himitsu_no_Yami Conjure animals upcast at 5th level: summon 16 draft horses at a point as high above Acererak in the chamber as you can.
Splat the sucker.
I'm controlling our Druid, been using Giant Insect as my concentration spell, didn't prepare Conjure Animals ;w;
Also I was just paralyzed--
Then this is going to go badly, I fear. (Down two PCs, effectively.) When I've run Acererak it's the PCs' action economy that took me down every time. I can hit hard, but they hit a lot.
01:25
We have 3 living PCs and an NPC left, one is paralyzed, one is trapped in a maze, the NPC and my other character are still trying to kill him
NPC paralyzed too now
Ouch
Whoa... that's giving me a headache.
It was there long enough for me to see it, that's all that matters :P
But anyway, I'm not too fond of paralysis as a mechanic to be honest
I don't know who thought that in a game about being able to control one character at a time (usually) that that was a great mechanic XD
druid is now making death saves
Yeah, I avoided it in the latter days of D&D 4e. I also modified mind control to make it less agency-stealing.
(You get one action on your turn, as per the "dazed" condition, and on the mind-controller's turn they can use one of their actions to have you use one of your at-will powers which requires the same kind of action.)
01:35
@trogdor It's never bothered me as a player--when I've been paralyzed I've had fun enough sitting back and watching my friends play for a while. As a GM, though, it just feels like such a big stick to hit someone with--so I try to stay away from it.
I don't think I've ever had a character that got paralyzed
I can tell you it would have made me pretty mad though
I got upset about just being grappled a few times
I did once have a player who got polymorphed into a small rock. He put a decorative rock on his character sheet and left the table, and whenever his character would've had something to say, he made wordless mumbly noises from the other side of the room.
But that was a very different group.
This is not looking good
01:41
It kinda sounds pretty bad yeah
When the maze ends, I'll do my darndest to wail into him, but it's not certain who will still be alive at that time
The Fighter/Wizard is the one in the maze, by the way
Only one person is still both up and not paralyzed?
Or two but one is inside a maze?
Two, but one is trapped in the maze
Warlock is still up and kicking, one NPC has just been killed
@Akira_Kurusu Luckily, INT saves/checks are pretty common. /s
[Hrmm... I really hope I'm remembering correctly that maze is an INT spell....]
Gro'Shuk, the Half-Orc Fighter Wizard, has 18 INT. I rolled a 17 to get out of the maze, but that didn't quite cut it.
01:46
That would be demoralizing if all you needed was an 18
X(
Acererak's DC... low 20s? +5 or 6 INT, maybe, and another 7 from CR/proficiency?
We've been keeping track of what succeeds and fails, and we believe his DC is 23
But, maze isn't based off of the spellcaster's DC once you're in it
It's a straight INT check for a static number, but I haven't looked up the number because I'm not a haxxor
Time to grapple that guy and dive into the lava.
I'm thinking of shoving him in to be honest
I have +10 to athletics with Gro'Shuk, and advantage on strength checks
@Akira_Kurusu I'd do it. It's why everyone has all those Gollum stuffed animals and Gollum halloween costumes and Gollum laptop skins, right? He's the hero?
01:54
Lol
Poor Gollum
In the end he saves the day and no one remembers that bit XD
Well, that seals it: Gro'Shuk will need to grapple and prone a flying Acererak, causing them to fall into lava, all while shouting "for Gollum and the realms of men!"
@V2Blast I guess I'm only allowed on char on the shared rpg acct. I was using a different char.

Q: Spotting monsters in caves/corners/passage/etc

kutsuuMy group likes to stop and peek inside caves to look for monsters before proceeding through. They like to surprise all the time. I already know how to spot something inside closed doors using Perception. But I'm not sure whether I should use Stealth (to peek in corners to prevent getting spotted...

Hahaha
Update:
Gro'Shuk was released from the maze, and now Gro'Shuk and Ilnith (The Warlock) are attacking him with the help of their Owl Familiars with 1 and 3 HP, respectively.
The NPC Champion is still paralyzed, but not dead. The Druid is still making Death saving throws.
02:31
Oh, it's an NPC who's paralyzed? That's totally different. That's just a GM reducing their cognitive load, but keeping a hole card on the table in case you-all start to tailspin =)
Ah, the druid also went to 0 HP because of melee crits. The Druid was paralyzed as well.
And nah, he's not the type of dm who would do that, he actually thinks of what the enemy would do, and rolls things fairly
He takes combat very seriously
We've ended for the night though, we'll resume tomorrow
@Akira_Kurusu Apparently, if he was still attacking the paralyzed druid =|
@JohnP Yep. Per Carcer's earlier comment :P

Is opening a 5e-dnd question on "What happens if a creature targeted by a spell becomes an invalid target?" well, meaningful?
I felt it was relevant to this question though I did also find this related question as well as this one. Unsure if those answer it or not
03:31
Whether or not it's been answered, I'm not sure how it wouldn't be a duplicate of:
13
Q: Is a spell suppressed or removed when the target temporarily becomes invalid?

Darth PseudonymBased on Jeremy Crawford's tweet, if a target is under the effect of an ongoing spell, and then the target changes such that it is no longer a valid target, the spell no longer effects them. But does the spell end, or is it merely suppressed? For example, suppose a human has been charmed by a d...

@nitsua60 I usually don't mind it if it's only a short duration, or I've had a chance to contribute to the fight or do something... But it's the worst when literally the first thing that happens in an encounter is that you become unable to do anything. Had that happen to my wood elf revised ranger (Deep Stalker Conclave, from the same UA) in one early fight in the Saturday game I was in a while back. That was annoying. The worst part is that this was just the run-of-the-mill drow statblock
03:58
@nitsua60 Because that question assumes the spell ends or gets suppressed at all, which we don't have any question establishing
Though I suppose a frame challenge to that question stating neither happens would work...

Eh, I've provided my own answer to the flying creature question, I guess I'll leave it at that

Should I remove the [reality-check] tag from the three questions it is on? I'm honestly unsure what the tag even does (here's a link)
The first question it was used on has this comment:"A "reality check" is (or at least used to be) one of the core principles of GURPS -- used to check whether a rule or ruling made sense. Perhaps they're irrelevant with the emphasis on "cinematic" play in recent editions, add-ons, and "powered by GURPS" publications. To me, the question appears to be as much about "would this even work" as it is about "how can I model this in-game.""
Maybe just remove it from the two more recent ones then, hmm

3 hours later…
07:25
Probably worth posting a meta about
I dunno if that's a specific mechanical concept within GURPS itself, in which case the tag could maybe stay - but if it's being used as a meta tag to indicate "I'm asking if this rule/ruling makes sense", then it should definitely go.

Q: How else can I improve this question about PC-tailored homebrew?

Krzysztof SkibińskiThe question First draft was written poorly and I fully understand why it was closed so fast. Now I believe I addressed all issues raised in comments. Is there a way to salvage it? I'm still adamant on general homebrew question, homebrew-review would receive too specific answers for my liking.

Unusual as in randomized from player-generated tables.

@jgn It can happen that all answers on a Q are bad, but I can also remember times where there were some good answers alongside mine and I'd upvote them

@jgn not petty, and I think that's the stack working as designed. If you don't feel that the other answers do a good job at answering the question, posting your better answer is a core stack assumption.
@NautArch heh, it would not be as cool of a color contrast, but it would certainly fit the lab's aquatic preferences
@KorvinStarmast very true. I always saw seals as the labs of the sea (just by look, because seals are a pretty metal.)
> voting down a post signals the opposite: that the post contains wrong information, is poorly researched, or fails to communicate information

ironically, I only know that you downvoted some answers because of this post. Otherwise, it's basically hidden. (site devs can pull it up, I think).

But I don't downvote if it's "missing something" or if I "wouldn't do that".

I downvote posts that fail to answer the question, are poorly constructed, incomplete, or are wrong, etc.
Or if @Rubiksmoose posted it.

@goodguy5 Draconomicon doesn't specify one.
@goodguy5 I guess that's your own headcanon about dragon butts.

@KorvinStarmast I think the problem is that pettiness comes across when your better answer starts "All these other answers are wrong" or words to that effect
@Carcer That's a step above petty, that's bordering on narcissistic.
14:53
@goodguy5 well, words to that effect. There are more and less obvious ways of expressing that
but basically there is a problem with posting answers which are framed as arguments with a pre-existing different answer, which we see happen a bunch
those don't tend to be well received
I've found it's better to post your own competing answer that refutes existing answers (as well as fully answers the question) more than debating in comments.
@V2Blast Yup, makes sense. Started to play around with building an artificer but I think i'm going to stick with wizard.
As a side note, I really wish there were more INT options for classes.
What's my responsibility to spoilerfy text in an answer about a module?

specifically that one about glass staff
@goodguy5 better safe than sorry?

@NautArch +1 that

@PierreCathé It's basically still just Wizard.
@NautArch I don't think the warlock class breaks if you switch it to Int

Q: How to resolve Skill Checks that can be repeated with no consequence?

DOCffAs a newbie GM, I wonder what happens when a PC fails on a Skill Check, but nothing stops them from rerolling it. E.g. ^but that one is also closed as a dupe of the lock one.
Today I noticed an interesting quirk in DnD 5e basic rules
Well, not exactly a quirk, but turns out all my groups have played ability checks a bit "incorrectly"
what do you mean?
> If the total equals or exceeds the DC, the ability check is a success--the creature overcomes the challenge at hand. Otherwise, it's a failure, which means the character or monster makes no progress toward the objective or makes progress combined with a setback determined by the DM.
and you've been doing .....?

jgn
@goodguy5 Nah, there are systems that detect votes that SE doesnt like
15:17
@jgn Well, sure. Serial downvoting, being the premier (and only one I know of); but that's why I said "basically"
^ The effects of ability check failure are restricted, barring rule zero, to "no progress" or "progress combined with a setback". The ever-so-popular "no progress AND you absolutely get trashed by wights" or similar isn't among the options!
O I C what you mean.

tbh, I expected you to say that you'd been giving out ties wrong.
@goodguy5 Nah, my usual circles are 90% computer professionals, we get our boundary conditions right ;)
"as if"
In all honesty, I think when I still played 5e actively I was the guy everyone looked at to remember whether it was the attacker's or defender's advantage, etc.
That one question about the super overpowered weapons brought back some memories from my DnD 4e days. Not good memories
15:22
"tie goes to the die"
or, my preference: "Ties go to the roller"
Our GM wasn't very good with the game rules at all and still we had this kinda attitude going on that whining about what the GM does is "rules lawyering" or "backseat GM'ing"
And ok, I tried to limit it, but at one point the GM let another member of our party loot some fancy magical thrown skulls from an ogre shaman (being able to loot enemy weapons is strictly not a given in 4e) AND just gave the weapon's statblock to the players, as-is
meaning they had a constant attack bonus, constant damage, AND I think some special effect too? The values as if still being used by an ogre despite the thrower(s), y'know, no longer being ogres but relatively normal adventurers.

@goodguy5 It's not really a secret, if you want to know if I downvoted a post just ask and I will tell you & the reason. If I posted another answer on a question you answered, and you got downvoted at the same time, then year probably I was not satisfied with your answer. It's nothing personal, I honestly don't even read the names unless I spot someone I see a lot like Medix (or v2 editing)
15:50
@jgn One thing I remember is that just because I disagree with an answer doesn't mean it's a bad answer. Heck, I've upvotes answers I disagreed with because the arguments made sense, there just may have been a step that could go either way
But I definitely think upvotes and downvotes are a to each their own kinda thing with how you dish/hand them out
@kviiri specific, general, etc. I'm sure 5e has some written cases of "make a skill and if you fail by X amount, extra bad happens"
There's saving throws like the Ghost's Scream Of Aging or whatever
Movement is how fast you can go in a round, correct?
"Horrifying Visage. Each non-undead creature within 60 feet of the ghost that can see it must succeed on a DC 13 Wisdom saving throw or be frightened for 1 minute. If the save fails by 5 or more, the target also ages 1d4 × 10 years.
@JohnP In 5e? It's how far you can go on your turn, and it need not be equal to your speed (since the Dash action and other things exist)
@Medix2 3.5e
16:00
@Medix2 Saving throws aren't ability checks, though (although they're similar)
@JohnP More or less, though you can't really break it up the way you can in 5e.
And you can downgrade your standard action to a move action, iirc.
@Carcer Hm, I can't think of any off the top of my head. Strangely this almost seems if the designers were going for a relatively hygienic separation between "roll to progress" (ability check) and "roll to avoid detriment" (saving throw) where mostly our tables have been using saving throws only when prescribed.
@goodguy5 I'm not worrying about breaking it up. If it's how far you can move on your turn, then it's 6 seconds. Or is the movement considered to be more or less instant?
I have the memory of an ability check to pick a lock where failing greatly sets it off alarms...
What I'm trying to get at, I guess, is how long in time does it take to go your movement speed? Say your base, 30 feet. How long to go from point A to point B 30 feet away?
16:10
@JohnP Instant, hence the peasant railgun
oh! For that marathon question
@goodguy5 Partially, yes.
It's kind of both. If you can move 30 feet in a turn, but you need to travel 60 feet (not counting any actions that let you move faster), then it takes you two turns to get there.
@goodguy5 But how long is that? In actual time?
rounds are 6 seconds
Though, 3.x/P have various other ways of moving, like the ... "sprint"? "Run"? action.
16:13
@goodguy5 ok, so that is the baseline. And a hustle is double that, ok. I wanted to check some of the math.
How does the 5 feet per second translate to travel pace values for longer distances?
(Average)
moving is a move action, so at a full combat hustle (not taking other actions) you can go double your listed speed in six seconds, with a full action flat out run you move 4 times your listed speed in six seconds, or 5x if you have whichever feat it is that makes you GO FAST
3.5e has a table for quickly determining overland movement rate at common speeds, seen on d20srd.org/srd/movement.htm
"Run" means "sprint", really, and you can sprint for minutes but not hours
5e has one too, I just can't look it up right now
you can "hustle" for up to an hour, but beyond that you start taking nonlethal damage and get fatigued
Yeah, I'm not suggesting one should translate combat speeds directly into proper marches :)
16:26
the game does, though
that's how those values are derived
Oh :o
Well, it's not the worst it could've done. And not like it matters that much anyway
well, very roughly at least
one round -> one minute is direct, the minute -> hour scale is a little bit off but that's essentially down to them rounding the distances to neat numbers of miles
You effectively get 528 rounds of movement per hour, so you're moving at 88% of combat speed
Interesting. A part of the reason I asked is that I was wondering which I'd put as faster, non-combat or combat speed.
That's a "normal" pace. A "fast" pace increases that by 1/3.
16:32
There's some reasons for both --- combat is shorter and more hectic which'd favor people exerting themselves a bit more, while OTOH they also have to be more careful and do other things instead of just moving, such as hitting people with implements of death
I think of the travel pace as stopping to rest 12% of the time. Then the fast pace is the same except you Dash one out of three rounds that you're moving.
actually I think the overland speeds are determined specifically so that you go at 1mph/10ft of speed, or double that at a hustle
because it's close enough and very easy to work out
and yeah, it seems consistent if you account for taking short breaks and not-perfectly-optimal routing
@kviiri 30 ft is .6 yards per second, so 1 mile is 17 minutes, 36 seconds. So right around 3.5 miles for an hour of walking, assuming flat and even.

"Elemental mercury (Hg0) has no electric charge. Mercury is also found in two positively charged, or cationic, states, Hg2+ (mercuric) and Hg1+(mercurous)" (so apparently there's three)
18:02
Well, it has the elemental form and then two oxidized states, so there are two ways to oxidize it
Or two states to oxidize it two, to be a spot more accurate
But all three are toxic, but depending on what compounds they are in, might not absorb very easily, so it can be used in say teeth fillings
I know it has 6 answers already, but I would swear this question on plot items is a duplicate.
I remember when somebody tried to sue a tuna fish canning company for giving him mercury poisoning...
@JohnP A duplicate of what?
@Medix2 I don't know. But I know I've seen a question very similar on here, my search fu is weak today.
@Medix2 Not to mistaken with the scenario where a half-fish pioneer in studying radioactive materials doses your food with cyanide. Or mer-Curie poisoning.
Or aforementioned half-fish half-scientist gets radiation sickness.
Maybe I'm conflating with a different question...
18:14
Hmmm yeah... I'm leaning towards duplicate for that one
On a totally unrelated note, I am considering changing my SN to "AlienAntFarm"
SN? A non-secure social-security number perhaps?
Screen Name/Nickname/Pseudonym/Catchphrase, whatever you want to call it.
Is there a way to view a tag description edit history?
Found it, nvm
So ToA is getting interesting. My character is paralyzed and in a pool of lava, taking 10d10 fire damage at the start of her turn
I'm a tiefling so I have fire resistance so it's a max of 50 damage
I'm gaining 50 temp HP at the start of my turn
So I'm just kinda chilling in the lava for now
18:29
@Himitsu_no_Yami Good thing you've got one of the nine gods with you, eh?
@nitsua60 I also fell 60 feet when I got paralyzed but Papazotl saved me from that too
of course one of our primary damage dealers is dead and our only healer is making death saves but...
@Himitsu_no_Yami Let's hope they're a halfling
@Medix2 Firbolg
So I'm looking at the edit history on the [reality-check] tag description, what exactly did the community bot do?

Q: What is the [reality-check] tag? Should something be done about it?

Medix2Currently the reality-check tag exists on three questions: How Should Speed and Range Affect Hit Probability? Non-Cinematic DR of Advanced Body Armour Using the slide recoil of a semi-auto pistol as a weapon The last question (the oldest at 5 months old) has the following two comments below i...

18:42
@Medix2 It automatically creates an empty wiki, so that there is one to which edits can be suggested. My guess, anyhow
@Someone_Evil I guess it just made it 5 months after the tag was created
@Medix2 It made it when the edit was suggested
Oh, or some anonymous user suggested the tag description and so the bot owns the anonymous suggestion. Interesting
@Medix2 Not necessarily anonymous, but not of a level that wouldn't need approval apparently.

Q: When are tag wikis created by the Community user vs a normal user?

Pika the Wizard of the WhalesWhen viewing the history of tag wikis, I've come across quite a few tags showing that the original revision was by the Community user, and quite a few that were by normal users. Two random examples I've come across are languages and profile-picture. When viewing the tag wiki histories, you can se...

Here's the linked answer it references: meta.stackoverflow.com/questions/342231/…

@Himitsu_no_Yami May their death saves go better than mine.
Cake or death?
Cake please...
Sorry, we're all out.
So, my only choice is "or death?"
Well, we only had 3 pieces, we didn't expect the rush.
I'll have the chicken.

All you guys vote to close the board game question...did anyone flag to migrate instead?
TIL that's a flag
Oh that would just be a custom flag, I see
@Medix2 ayup. Flag for mod attention and state "better fit for X site".
Assuming of course the question isn't crap in the first place, or would be OT there too.
Also I guess at least on MSE you can vote to close as needing to be moved?
Migration is just a pain, it's often better to just suggest it to the asker in comments and close it as OT.
@Medix2 That's because sometimes new users don't know what Meta is.
So they post actual site questions to Meta on accident.
grumble grumble why are there two near-identical close reasons with very different meanings...
19:43
It happens fairly often and you usually don't have to worry as much about inter-site policy when migrating from meta to actual.
"This question belongs on another site in the Stack Exchange network" is a close reason, but for some reason I can only choose to send questions to Meta RPG...
Because intra-site (actual <-> meta) migration is much less of a headache than inter-site migration.
But then the close reason just seems laughably inaccurate
Just because something sounds like it would be on-topic for another site doesn't mean it is.

ultra-site-migration
19:44
"This question belongs on another SE site", oh but you can only choose this one other site
And just because one site has certain policies towards a question type doesn't mean another site has the same policies.
I think I'm just confused by this close reason, it makes absolutely no sense to me
For example, story identification is a fairly popular question type on SciFi.SE. But if someone asks "what is this game" on SciFi.SE, that doesn't mean it should be migrated to Gaming.SE because Gaming.SE has very strict qualifications for acceptable game identification questions.
Policy mismatches is why inter-site migration should always be handled very carefully.
19:47
I just think "This question belongs on another site" should be reworded since it really means "This question belongs on Meta RPG.SE" or at least, that's the only "other site" I can choose
@Yuuki Yes, another example is cooking doesn't accept nutrition questions unless it relates directly to the preparation process. Some questions would be great on skeptics, but they don't (yet) meet the posting standards. Etc etc/
Maybe mods can choose other other sites or something
@Medix2 Mods can migrate to any site, but it's considered a bit rude to do it without asking if you are unfamiliar with scope.
@JohnP Does that specific close reason give more sites to choose from to mods?
@Medix2 Yup.
19:49
Yes, mods can choose other sites but it's considered polite to just have the asker post their question again on the other site rather than migrate it.
Here, I get meta only as the option. Sites I mod, I get the whole gamut.
I guess maybe it's some sort of result of the overall close reasons and RPG.SE settings or something making a mismatch of communication
@Yuuki Really? I wonder if that's a site by site preference, I hadn't heard that.
At least to me "This question belongs on another site" is nowhere near identical to "This question belongs on Meta RPG.SE", which is the source of my confusion
@JohnP Maybe. I do know that on Gaming.SE, the mods try to avoid migrating to other sites, especially GameDesign.SE.
19:53
I guess it's just some fact of the system and custom flags are how to request migrations and not close reason that sounds like it would work
@Yuuki Well, to be fair, Gaming is fairly niche, I can't imagine too many questions that would fit anywhere else.
There's some overlap with BoardGames.SE and, very rarely, RPG.SE as well.
Why did this search not work?
"migrated:" is a valid operator according to this page
What didn't work?
Oh huh... the first one is migrated and others aren't
