Also, what an interesting set of four questions from our stack; homebrewing, problem-at-the-table, edition comparison, and a rules clarification. Anyone feel a major question category is left out?
Optimization, maybe

Sigh...3 days of 5p to 12a shift for planning sessions. Whoopee.

@JohnP oh my
planning what?

12:48 AM
@V2Blast clearly it's how to take over the world. Zort!

@V2Blast 2020. Deciding on priorities, business objectives, goals, etc.
And of course my darling little monsters will gladly let me sleep in until at least 5:30am... :p

Q: Rules about invisibility, bag of holding, an imp and an undead's head scenario

RugiewitOkay....to make an extremely long story short. A PC put an imp inside his bag of holding. Running out of oxygen I made the imp transform into a spider to survive a much longer time than 10 minutes. (Looking online this imp/spider can now survive weeks with little oxygen) At some point my PC also...

Q: How Much Does a Petrified Character Weigh?

3d12This came up in a session this weekend. One of my players was turned to stone (petrified) during combat. After combat, the rest of the party wanted to drag the statue around the rest of the dungeon, in hopes of finding a way to cure them. (And not wanting to leave the statue alone) In lieu of an...

Q: How can I incorporate elements of the Hindu faith into my campaign without the attempts looking goofy or causing offense?

3d12For this question, assume I will shortly be running a campaign for some players who are new to D&D, most of whom are of Hindu faith. I'd like to introduce some elements of the Bhagavad Gita and Ramayana for flavor, but I'm only passingly familiar with these texts. Note that I don't plan to spawn...

Q: Using fog cloud to increase archer range

finduslLongbow archers can attack up to 600 ft but would do so at disadvantage. However if they would first walk into a fog cloud and then shoot, they would roll normal based on this question. Because advantage and disadvantage cancel out. Since advantage and disadvantage caused in a heavy obscured area...

> On Saturday at Dragonmeet’s Runequestions seminar, Chaosium’s Michael O’Brien, Jason Durall, Ian Cooper, and Jeff Richards announced a BRP Open Game License and a BRP SRD. In a follow-up post on basicroleplaying.org, Jeff elaborated, “The SRD is a core BRP rules document that people are authorized to create derivative works from, including rules expansions, etc. But certain things are going to be off limits - you can't use the BRP rules to create your own game using the Cthulhu Mythos. Or your own version of Pendragon. Etc.”

@V2Blast eh, is Glorantha the old Runequest setting? (Memory fading...)

I'm thinking about opening a fifth edition dnd question about what happens when a Gibbering Mouther's Gibbering feature, crown of madness, and confusion all interact, but I'm unsure how many questions to make. I'm afraid that all possible combinations of the features on a single character would be ruled differently

Hello.
Good bye.

Hello

Hi

12:53 PM
Hi, quick question, anyone there and awake? :P
(It's about SE, not RPG)
We have an user that posts a lot of question but never only validated two answers ever. Would it be appropriate to politely inform them of that fact and point that accepting an answer is the expected thing to do when someone helped you?

Q: What can we do about questions with no accepted answer and no specified reason for it?

YandrosI've come across multiple questions that are more than a week old, have answers for them (some are pretty great in my opinion) yet none of them have been accepted and, worse yet. there is no indication in the question about why none of them were. My question is, what can we do to encourage users...

Thanks V2 ^^

1:23 PM
@Nyakouai I know this isn't the point, but is "an user" grammatically correct?

I'm not sure, it does sound strange

it is not

IIRC, you put "an" if the sound after is "vowel-y", so I think u enter that cat...
Ah
Thanks ^^

not the way that user is pronounced in english
"yuser"

True. Thanks for pointing that out

1:25 PM
if it was "ooser", then "an user" would be correct

lol, I'm going to start pronouncing it that way

(e.g. "an Uber" referring to the taxi service is correct)

Don't you pronounce that "yuber"?

@Nyakouai not in America

or in the UK.
there's some words which are kinda edge-casey depending on accent/dialect
like for instance I wouldn't be alarmed by "ubiquitous" being pronounced either way, "yubiquitous" feels more natural to me but I could hear it with a short oo instead

1:30 PM
"short oo" makes me think of someone pronouncing a "long oo" like:

oooooohbiquitous

@goodguy5 the noise that makes in my head is extremely french

Probably because it looks like a french word that got absorbed by english :P

I think those ü's are often pronounced as "oo" in the Anglosphere, but I think the Germans themselves pronounce them like the "ew" in "new"

@kviiri oooooberwald
Moootly Croooe

I'll let you to your "oo" ^^ Thanks for the help, have a good day

1:41 PM
@Carcer The o with dots varies a bit by language but here and in Swedish at least it's the schwa sound, pronounced somewhat similar to the "a" article in English
At least I think it varies by language

Pretty much any letter varies to some extent with language
I mean, a lot of them vary massively within one language

Yea, true

1:57 PM
@kviiri ah, but it's a u with umlaut
oh yes there is an o in Mötley Crüe

I've never been 100% sure how to pronounce ö.

I have read (possibly apocryphally) that they got surprised by german crowds shouting at them and pronouncing the umlauts

@Carcer :I was quite surprised to see that "can I have some lööps" meme with the word pronounced as just "loops"
Do the dots not matter to ye!

Not helpfully to anyone else, but my gut is to pronounce ö like ø, because it used to be typeset like that

I've always pronounced lööps as... roughly like "lerps"

Q: Can a wizard learn spells written in an unfamiliar language using the Comprehend Languages spell?

TheChymeraIf a wizard finds a spell book in an unfamiliar language, which he can understand via the Comprehend Languages spell (but not otherwise), can he transcribe these spells in his own spell book?

@HotRPGQuestions Sigh. @me: misses read magic.

@nitsua60 no you don't. it was a crutch

@nitsua60 I feel like that spell made the act of reading spellbooks, etc. a little silly. Why wouldn't an experienced spellcaster be able to decipher arcane text? Why make them use a cantrip; its not like its affording a substantial cost to that effort.

I miss magic being magical. I miss having to go find a sage or some lost tomb's inscriptions to figure out what a thing did. I miss each wizard I played being fundamentally different by dint of the old "% to know" rolls. I miss wizards being indispensable and being fragile.

I don't miss them being as fragile as they once were.

My first wizard had 2 hp at level 1 (AD&D)

2:23 PM
@goodguy5 My last 0e fighter had 1 hp at level 1.

yea, no thanks
If I want to play a dead character, I'll play Traveller.

@nitsua60 And he was last because it made you stop playing that system, yes?

And especially in a 3.5 atmosphere of "your cantrips are expended", read magic felt unnecessarily cumbersome.
or am I misremembering....

@Someone_Evil No, just most recent. A couple years back we did a year of 0e to celebrate its 40th birthday.

@goodguy5 Doesn't that mean playing optimally is just having your wizard cast some buff spells or battlefield-control spells and then stuffing them in a metal box?

2:25 PM
@goodguy5 (Might be relevant that I skipped 2e-->5e.)

ohhhhhh yea
that'll do it

@nitsua60 I did 2e->4e, so I'm in a similar boat in terms of having no experience in 3.X
(although I was playing 2e when 3.5e already had more splat books than Magic Tree House books)

That makes me want to play two characters that are a super fragile wizard and a super brawny <tank class>. Where the tank hauls around a metal box and the wizard pops up to shoot spells.

like a master blaster kind of thing

@goodguy5 That does sound fun

@DavidCoffron "buff spells" and "battlefield control spells" don't sound too much like the old 1e first-level spellbooks I usually had =)
Hold portal, though--useful when you're running away and you're out of spikes!

2:33 PM
Anyone familiar with the Munchkin card games?

@DavidCoffron unfortunately, yes
I'm "good" for about 1 munchkin game a year.

@DavidCoffron Not enough to help with questions, but I know that lots of people are on the official forum and questions get answered there.
(Hopefully I'm not missing some unlinked context upthread that would make my reply irrelevant.)

I think it was contextless
I'm looking for a word. I think it starts with a 'd'.

Flying enemies are supposed to be a _________ to melee attackers.

my first thought was dirge, but that's a different thing. Derth is also wrong.

"a problem to"
Something not quite as bad as a "bane"

deterrent?

@goodguy5 I got gifted a couple of munchkin sets...not good?

2:48 PM
detriment?

no.... I think it's one syllable... maybe I'm imagining such a word.

@vicky_molokh My famliy (and I) love the Munchkin Cthulu game (it is our go-to for the past 6 months or so), and I was interested in spicing things up with a different theme. Any suggestions for Christmas Munchkin gift?

@NautArch It's not that it's "not good", I just don't like it.

@goodguy5 Is the missing word supposed to be positive or negative?

@NautArch negative

2:49 PM
Burden?

curb?

If I can't think of it, I'll just go with scourge, I think

Trial?

anathema?
definitely not one syllable
:P

Pest?
Vex?
(although the noun form is actually Vexation)

2:52 PM
Anathema definitely occured to me. but it's okay.

Drag?
I think I'm out of 1-syllable ideas

eh, it's fine. If it comes to me, I'll edit my answer
I just (last night) got a upvote and accept on a 2 month old answer

hello

@DavidCoffron No idea. There may or may not be a Christmas-themed set, for example. Try asking here.
/me waves.

how is everyone
I got my heroforge stls

2:58 PM
Heading home from work to work some more :-)

oof

@Gwideon Nice. Printing yourself, or outsourcing?

@nitsua60 printing using my schools 3d printer

I have some DB operations that need to be done after hours so I'll save time by going home during office hours and loading stuff at home
@Gwideon Cool that schools have those!

Moderately active workday. Checked out the Automation OST, might use half of it for a certain city in my campaign. Also, a commission artist picked up a certain dreamscape vehicle image job that I'm looking forward to including in the campaign.

3:00 PM
(I suppose I was assuming you'd go physical. Maybe these days people just pick up .stls so that they can project their own holograms at the table...?)

@Gwideon Is it high quality enough? I tried printing on my lower-end lulzbot mini and the results were not great.
If you want to send it somewhere, i very much recommend Impactminiatures

My first DnD miniature was a Moomintroll keychain. I still use it from time to time.

@NautArch I think it's an older maker bot. It's not the best quality but it'll be good enough. I can scale them up as these aren't meant to be used as actual miniatures (we don't play using battlemaps) but more as statuettes so um yeah.

@Gwideon As long as you're okay with losing a lot of the cool detail. But it's also free for you to try, so you got that going for you!
That was my big disappointment with the lulzbot print. I designed all this cool detail in heroforge and then lost it when printing.

lol, I just tried to type "creature" as "creachure"; my eyes caught it before spellcheck did, but phew that was confusing....

Like the time I forgot how to spell drawer.

3:07 PM
droar?
draur?
drure?

@goodguy5 I don't know why my desk can't use its inserts to draw me a picture. It's in the name!

droor, draer. drure. draur.
"mommom? I know this is dumb, but I've forgotten how to spell drawer."

@goodguy5 On that jump attack question, what if the enemy is at 10' and you have a strength of 20?

nope
I'll reread the section, but the game doesn't play nice with verticality

You're right. Even in that case, it's .5(3+5) for a standing high jump. THey'd only get 4' but need 5'. If they could run and jump, then they can hit a creature 10' above them.

3:22 PM
btw, the running high jump has always irked me as a rule
running forward 10 feet doesn't help you jump higher

17
Q: Can you jump higher if you run? If so, why? (High jumping)

kluttI have often wondered why high jumpers can jump higher if you run. The way I see it is that you only build up horizontal speed, and since you're running on a plane, I cannot see how this speed can be used to increase the vertical speed. I cannot say that I have any definite proof of this claim,...

@goodguy5 Every competitive high-jumper disagrees with you.

how dare you bring physics into this

It's not all about just having horizontal v to clear the bar. There's a portion of the jump-action which is using the leg as a rigid pivot to start converting horizontal to vertical before extending the leg.

but, clearing a high jump bar is inherently a different action than a vertical jump, like the one used to dunk (closer to an attack, imo)

3:28 PM
@goodguy5 Sure, but the high jump is one that is optimized for upward movement, so it exaggerates (and makes more visible) the things that are going on in jumping, generally.
Then again, we're parsing the fine details of jumping in a game where characters are routinely depicted carrying swords bigger than themselves. I might bow out =)

What I'm learning from this, is that you should use your halberd as a pole vault mechanism and then use that elastic momentum to do a spinning attack.

@goodguy5 Great narrative description for a melee combatant attacking a flying enemy that's 15' above them :P

I miss that feat that allowed you to combine multiple attacks into one.... not power attack, but uh.... focus attack? no.....
for the record, it was a total trap feat, but it was cool
Vital Strike.

was about to say
more sets of weapon damage dice but not other modifiers so it was pretty garbage

especially back in a climate when most of your damage WAS modifiers.
I'm not even sure how I'd implement such a thing in 5e.

I assume use a bonus action to add the weapons dice again to the total of an attack.

3:56 PM
Make a special action during which you make a melee attack with some bonuses, maybe?

@goodguy5 That's not crazy. It's basically taking an off-hand attack and upgrading by (a) guaranteeing a hit (since you presumably only choose the option when you've already hit) and (b) lifting the light/one-hand property for all attacks in the turn.

I mean, most classes that aren't fighters already get class abilities which make their individual attacks do extra damage as opposed to the fighter who just stakes up more attacks
sneak attack, smite/improved smite, lots of cleric domains have +1d8 damage of some kind...

All the bizzare ranger-things...
(Though monk goes the other way and instead doubles down on the whole "MOAR ATTACKS" vibe.)

but I don't know you need another way to do it. The problem vital strike was "solving" was the dependency on being able to stand still and full attack, but 5e's action economy entirely obviates that problem already by decoupling movement from the other actions

@nitsua60 Although the Kensei has the option to expend Ki for moar damage, too.

4:12 PM
I liked playing Monk because it formed a comfortable middle ground between the cognitively simple but boring Fighter and the analysis paralysis inducing but versatile spellcasters. But I must say, I also love more attacks per turn.
It's a bit sad having only one attack per turn and missing it.
I like the 13th Age idea of making each class's common attacks deal damage even on a miss, it doesn't really change the numbers game much but it feels much better when even a miss does something.
Or rather, when no turn winds up "wasted" because of a bad roll.

4:37 PM
now this has my mind spinning with some kind of AC mitigation mechanic.

A miss still deals minimum damage - the amount that it missed by.

rolled a 17 vs AC18? minimum damage -1.

rolled a 10 vs AC18, likely zero damage

@goodguy5 ahh, that's a subtraction operator, not a grammatical dash.

yea, I'd change it if I could

Now remind me, how does one recognize a teacher in the chatroom. :P

Jon Peterson (Playing at the World) has a good chapter on the history of how the separation of hit-rolls and damage-rolls evolved in wargaming-->D&D.
@kviiri Preferably with a bribe gift =)

@nitsua60 Ooh, excellent riposte!

4:42 PM
oooh. nerdarchy is doing a convention in philly next year....

4:55 PM
Sapphine Phoenix's abrupt career change always strikes me as one of the most interesting things in our gaming environment. I suggest against googling her name at work without safe search turned on.

One tends to think (or at least I do) that any sort of film workers are forever locked into that field (and especially the adult variety); perhaps that is because of the permanency of film?
(I was looking at Nerdarchy and she was guesting on another little viedo for them)

my recollection says she broke into this domain off of a D&D podcast which was specifically about AV stars playing D&D?

@Carcer oooh. did no know that. I'll look into it off hours ;)

(and to minor nitpick it's Satine Phoenix)
at the very least I remember seeing occasional mention on t'internet of a D&D show which was specifically porn stars playing D&D as of a few years ago and the timelines for that match up. I never looked into it so I dunno if she was actually on that or not

@Carcer hrm... then who the heck is sapphine and why was that in my craw?

I mean, Satine -> Sapphine is a pretty understandable stumble when "Phoenix" is the next word

5:12 PM
um hey

hey

@Gwideon That's a very small length of hey. I don't know how you got a farmer to sell you that much, or how they measured it. I would double check to make sure you got what you paid for.

@Xirema You can buy it from a very small farmer

@MikeQ Okay. My questions have been resolved.

5:27 PM
Down by the bacteria ranch, where the microbes are 100% grass-fed

5:47 PM
I'm 100% sure I've seen a cartoon of some kind of microbe raising other microbes on a ranch like cattle, but I can't find it.

@KorvinStarmast Don't want to get into this in comments, but forcing that seems to create a bit of an uneven playing field. Enemies coordinate naturally because one person is controllling them (the DM), but the players can't.
@goodguy5 closest I can think of is Futurama.
but not microbes

Okay, I need to say it somewhere. I sit on an advisory board of about 50 people that meets six times a year. The next meeting (next week) was just cancelled by the administrative assistant, with a request to reply saying that we have received the message.
Given that about 90% of the people on the board seem to have disabled their "reply" functions in favor of "reply all," I'm not looking forward to my inbox today =\

ouch

Huh, usually it's the other way around. No one realizes there's a reply all option.

could be worse.

5:58 PM
@NautArch I did learn that gmail's auto-suggested replies ("Sounds good!" "I'll be there!" "Sorry, I can't.") default to replying all on some devices without the user ever having specified that behavior.

In my organisation there was a historical incident involving an all-staff (all staff comprising, in this case, near twenty thousand people) reply-all chain that got so badly out of hand it brought the email infrastructure to a screaming halt for like two days.

@nitsua60 RIP your inbox.

@Carcer I'd laugh at this, if I didn't have friends who work in the sorts of offices that have to deal with that sort of mess =(

I would have been the kind of person who'd have to deal with it if I had been working here at the time
it's still hilarious
because the actual problem was people who were replying-all to a) tell everyone off for using reply-all or b) have fun

oh, you use the same daycare I do? neat!

But reallly, trying to get the billing dept woman to reply to my wife and I is a headache

6:01 PM
one person decided this was a great opportunity to show everyone pictures of his cats
and trying to deliver to twenty thousand inboxes several megabytes of cat pictures was the straw that broken everything, I understand

Without prying, is your organization notable enough to have made this listing?

@NautArch There can never be this theoretical "level playing field." Each DM will present the monsters as well coordinated or badly coordinated as they see fit. That's the way it goes. If you find that your DM is providing a Hive Mind enemy that isn't Mind Flayers, then I suggest a talk with the DM.

@KorvinStarmast Also true. But it does seem like restricting players from coordinating, while an option and probably a time-saver, also seems inherently imbalanced.
But yeah, it's clear whether or not the enemy is coordinating their efforts or not.

@nitsua60 my organisation is very notable but we appear to not have publicised this particular incident

@NautArch Nope, it (1) rewards a little planning and it makes the characters talk during their turn and then be quiet when others are taking their turn. It cleans up the play at the table.

6:04 PM
@Carcer I do find it cute that Utah experienced a state of emergency because too many people wanted to contribute to the holiday potluck.

@KorvinStarmast Hol up - I agreed with you on that part. I just also think that if there is that rule, the DM needs to try and follow it themselves. Which is hard, because they're one person controlling many.

That means If you want to provide an idea to another PC, do it during your turn ... it works well enough.

@KorvinStarmast Shouldn't the DM also be announcing verbally any communication between their creatures, too (assuming the party can understand it?)

@NautArch Indeed, but none of us can "make" a Dm do that. And I think that as one gets experiend as a DM, one gets to appreciate that
@NautArch IMO, yes! And I do. Most good DM's that I've played with do that also. And as an aside, it helps with the feel of the combat.

@KorvinStarmast I'm not sure you are a good example of 'most DMs'...unfortunately.

6:06 PM
never not be casting telepathic bond

@NautArch Can't I be three DMs? The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly?

@KorvinStarmast hehehe. Only if whenever you walk in the room to the table, you play the music.

@Carcer Is that a Glengarry GlenRoss reference? (Never not be closing?)

so I started the print for my miniatures

@Gwideon fun!

6:07 PM
@Gwideon <crosses fingers>

@NautArch It is on my D&D play list. :) I even had a character once called Il Cattivo. (He died, though)

eta on the ..... "print"? "cast"? what's the right word for that?

3d printers are really cool to watch.

printddd? (it's a print with 3 d's)

@NautArch yeah I'm really hoping this goes well

6:08 PM
@KorvinStarmast indirectly if it is, because that's not something I'm familiar with but I have "never not be [verbing]" in my head memetically

@Carcer Well, for some reason I think that movie generated the meme, and IIRC it came out almost two decades ago? Also, Coffee is for Closers. I'll look it up, but I think that's where it came from.
@Carcer Whoops, I maybe gooned that up. Seems that the ABC = Always Be Closing is the line. sorry.
Goodness, that movie came out in 1992. Arrgh, I feel old.

Q: Can a Druid Goblin use Nimble Escape while Wild Shaped into a non-agile animal form?

Guillaume F.Can a Goblin Druid use its Nimble Escape ability while Wild Shaped? Nimble Escape. You can take the Disengage or Hide action as a bonus action on each of your turns. and, for Wild Shape: You retain the benefit of any features from your class, race, or other source and can use them if ...

Is there a stackable question in that question about cities and players?

@goodguy5 was just looking at that

yes, I was
Something like "How can I prepare for an open world-style cities?"?

@NautArch my instinct is "too broad" so I VtC'd

^

6:42 PM
@KorvinStarmast Same, but i'm trying to figure out if there's a way to ask it.
Today is also clearly "Let's not actually cite sources day". I've had to add several citations in answers.

@NautArch heh, it seems that every day is "oh wait, you want sources?" day.

No sources for you, you come back; three weeks!

Q: Do attacks that give the Grappled condition work against creatures more than 1 size larger?

Guillaume F.Many creatures, such as the Giant Frog, have attacks that grapple on a hit: Bite. Melee Weapon Attack: [...] Hit: (1d6 + 1) piercing damage. The target is grappled (escape DC 11). Does this grapple work against a creature Huge or larger? Usual Grapples don't work if the target is more than ...

Hello fake internet friends. Have folks been playing or planning tabletop stuff recently?

@MikeQ We don't talk about such things here.
3

@MikeQ My group discovered in last night's session that they're [mostly] responsible for a three-way siege that has broken out outside Wave Echo Cave between the Orcs, the Humans, and the Drow.
TL;WT: they commissioned forged documents to give to the humans and the orcs, each figured out that the documents were forged and blamed the drow, and when they both arrived at the same area to attack the drow, they remembered "oh yeah, humans and orcs don't like each other!" and decided to attack each other as well.

@Xirema What a twist!

9:38 PM
@Xirema What do the players intend to do about it

@MikeQ That is a good question which I will be learning the answer to next session, as I called things early due to a few players who were missing.
I figured it was better to get the whole party present before having to make a major[-ly disastrous] decision.
Especially since party members being absent was what led to the remaining party confidently deciding that "oh, we'll just give them a forgery!" was a good solution.
.... multiple times.

10:09 PM
Some friends and I played Firebrands recently, and it was pretty fun!
It's a player-vs-player game with no dice. There's a planet that was until recently just a backwater, until some obscenely valuable minerals were discovered on it. The players represent three factions: offworlders legally considered to be the owners of the land the mineral was found in, the aristocratic ruling families who have been here for generations, and a grassroots rebellion of all the working class and long-term inhabitants of the land.
Every faction has to be represented by at least one player but no more than two, so it's a 3-6 player game.
It highly encourages developing deep, messy interpersonal connections and boy does it deliver on letting us make the situation as messy and difficult to untie as possible.
Also has good rules for managing play time: the game begins to wind up whenever anyone says it's a good place to end, and then an epilogue happens in which the players work out what the future will bring.

10:26 PM
@doppelgreener So the whole game is meant to finish in 1 session? That's convenient.

Yep, it's made for 1-3 hours of play

nice
short is sweet
especially if you have more time and can play it again :P XD

Q: Jumping to extend one's vertical reach?

Guillaume F.Can a character jump vertically (with range 3 + strength modifier) to reach a flying enemy? Or, is it impossible to combine a vertical jump with an attack?

It's possible there's an innocent (or other sinister) explanation, but I'm starting to feel like there is some kind of trolling going on

@Someone_Evil I feel like actual trolling would involve a more significant expenditure of effort.

I know it's frustrating, but still need to try and be nice here. Just flag when you see, please!

Hi everyone--we (the moderators) have had a couple of these accounts flagged to our attention and are aware. Thanks for the collective heads-up, and we (and SE staff) will take it from here. — nitsua60 ♦ 10 secs ago

Hi everyone--we (the moderators) have had a couple of these accounts flagged to our attention and are now aware. Thanks for the collective heads-up, and we (and SE staff) will take it from here. (If you see new accounts you believe to be alts feel free to flag, of course. I just don't think we need to litigate it here, publicly.) — nitsua60 ♦ 1 min ago
