@Ben Depends what they're up to.
in RPG General Chat, Jun 2 '16 at 0:58, by BESW
Instead of using different times based on geographic location, use different times zones based on what the time is related to. Physicists all over the world measure observations in the same time zone, but when they watch a movie it starts in the entertainment time zone.
See ^^ and following conversation(s) =)
Also, of general interest to this room, if my suspicion's correct:

A: What is the reason we are moving to having 5 diamond moderators?

nitsua60There's nothing particularly magical about the number 5. A long-serving mod retired recently and we three thought that a deeper bench of experienced moderators would be good to have in the community, as other mods may choose to retire with little notice. -doppelgreener, nitsua60, and mxyzplk

@Ben Yes, plus or minus an hour here and there. In 2017 I asked him if he'd run, as I figured he's a shoe-in (all four of them! :) ), but the response was "not at this time" or something like that.
01:07
Can nominees vote in the election?
@linksassin I assume so? We're also users, after all. Though I don't know how it works in terms of voting for ourselves.

Q: I can vote for myself in the moderator election but not in the primaries

Matt EllenI am running for moderator in the EL&U election. I can vote for myself in the final stage of the election. I couldn't vote for myself in the primaries. Is this a feature or a bug?

15
A: Can a candidate vote for election in primary phase?

ChrisFCandidates can vote for themselves in the election phase, but in primary phase, they can't.

@V2Blast I assume you can't vote for yourself. Same as regular posts. Reason I ask is I am considering nominating but would like to still be able to vote for you and @Rubiksmoose as I think you guys would be great.
@linksassin Looking at the posts I linked, you can't vote for yourself in the primaries, but you can vote for yourself in the actual general election
but regardless it seems you can vote in both
@V2Blast And it looks like you can always vote for others yes. Thanks for that.

@KorvinStarmast I do completely understand that. I suppose I feel that I need to be convinced that I could fill the role properly, which is probably a mark against me, for now.
@nitsua60 oh, they travel a lot?
No, I was making a reference to BESW's belief that we should restructure time zones around activities, rather than geography.
Ben
Ben
Oh Interesting...
I.e. if they're at work they might be in UTC+2, but if they're at game night it's probably UTC-8.
Although they might travel a lot--what do I know!?
=D
Ben
Ben
Haha
You're in Russia, do I remember?
Ben
Ben
02:55
@nitsua60 A lot further south haha.
I'm in Australia
Ah. Not really Russia, then.
Ben
Ben
I'm terrible in cold environments haha
So how many votes do we have? Is it like a 1, 2, 3 thing?
@Ben During the primary (if there is one) you can up- or down-vote each candidate.
During the election you get 1st-place, 2nd-place, and 3rd-place votes.
Makes sense
Ben
Ben
Ok cool
03:05
@nitsua60 I'm assuming that unlike the regular site, our up/downvotes are not visible as a score (in the primary)?
A worked example of how those place-votes get tabulated can be seen here, where greener takes mod on the first ballot and ten ballots later I clear the bar by millivotes =)
@V2Blast I believe they follow the same rules as mainsite post-votes: if you can expand Q&A up/down, you can do so on the primary votes.
@nitsua60 interesting
Ben
Ben
@nitsua60 Oh dang haha
@nitsua60 wow
(The primary actually is a mainsite Q&A, re-skinned, IIRC. Up & down votes on any/all of the "answers", the "question" is the announcement, sort-order is by net vote, comments are enabled.)

But yes, ultimately we have myself, linksassin, Miniman, BESW, and Trogdor in the same timezone area :)
@Ben which timezone is that?
Ben
Ben
-10 UTC-ish
Wait... is it plus or minus? I know we're 10 hours ahead of UTC. It's 1pm on Wednesday 29th for me rn
Plenty of others, too: Adeptus, daze413, Magician, GMJoe, off the top of my head.
03:22
@Ben assuming some of you are in Guam, it's UTC+10 (I googled it after remembering that being mentioned before)

@V2Blast Yeah. +10. the "-" didn't sound right lol

@KorvinStarmast Thanks, but I think I'll pass :) I think I still need to do some self-development in the thing where I behave consistently courteously with the strangers on the internet
I don't think I have huge problems in that department, but after all, everything I say will be diamonded.
@kviiri I'm mostly used to reddit, where you can turn the mod-distinguish on or off (it's off by default), but I think I behave myself well there regardless. (On Discord, on the other hand, there's no turning it off...)

@kviiri That is completely fair, and perfectly legitimate
08:32
I also have no particular aspiration for the broom :)
ALthough I did consider nominating myself, briefly

10:44
@kviiri Cool, I think you'd be a great choice.
11:00
@KorvinStarmast Aw, thanks :)

3 hours later…
13:45
@linksassin would you mind if I asked you a question about your questionnaire? Specifically about your note about allowing questions that don't "fit the system"?
And just to be clear, my intent is simply understand your position, I'm not trying to play gotcha or score points.
14:08
@kviiri Not just that, but when you are in chat, your name is blue, which also has an impact even if you are just chatting in another sites room. And, people across sites also tend to know if you are a mod on the network. Tends to give a gravitas to whatever you say anywhere.
@JohnP so gravitasy
@kviiri Indeed.
:p
I find it amusing and slightly ironic that I am running on a site that produced my only suspension (which was a 10? 30? minute timeout chat suspension) on the network in 7 years.

2 hours later…
16:06
@JohnP Feel free to ignore this advice, but since you put that bit of info out there on this public chat where voters might drop in, maybe it might help to explain it if it might help people not see this as a black mark for you?
Or maybe it is best to leave it alone. Just a thought I had.
16:38
@JohnP Since you've raised the issue, I think it's be fair to tell the room that it was a chat suspension, not a site suspension. I.e. something you said got flagged and validated which removes the message and suspends the user (for a couple of minutes, IIRC, in the first instance); it's not that RPGSE moderators looked at any mainsite or meta activity of yours and said "this guy needs a nap."

1 hour later…
17:42
@nitsua60 @Rubiksmoose - Good point, I edited to reflect the nature of the suspension.
Cool! Glad it was a helpful suggestion
@Ben It's +. As you go west from from UTC (Greenwich, basically) you subtract hours per time zone. As you go east, you add hours per time zone. At the International date line, they meet and one side is -12 and the other side is +12. Not sure if that helps or not :p
:50483153 done. I missed that originally.
18:04
@JohnP One of the other magical things diamond-mods can do? (edit a message hours after posting)
@V2Blast They can do comments too. #jealous
@V2Blast Diamond mods and (I think) chat room owners.
Plus of course CM team members. They have Halliday/Anorak type powers.
@V2Blast Maybe my diamond mod campaign platform should be the fact that I want to fix silly typos in my comments that I see 5.01 minutes after posting them. ;)
@JohnP I had to google that. Ready Player One reference?
@Rubiksmoose I support this campaign
18:13
@V2Blast Yeah. Technically, RP1 is a large RPG anyway.
@V2Blast Is this how RPG.se gets political mod parties?
@Rubiksmoose You mean a blue flood? :)
@JohnP hah!
That generally happens when something(s) get flagged, and the mods are bored enough to all show up to see what's going on.
Or a newbie/distracted mod links to the room instead of the transcript.
18:29
@JohnP I've been at the proceeding end of a few so-called "blue floods" and seen responses like "now you've brought in the blue diamonds!"
(as in I drop in out of curiosity and hopefully to cool-down other site members, and then other people do)
BLUE DIAMOND

I "ran" for department chair once on the platform that I'd do two things: buy two gross of whiteboard markers and put them in the stockroom, and resign.
(Previously the 'system' had been to go get 4-packs of markers form the school store, at a ridiculous price, and they only ever stocked like 3 packs so half the time they were out.)
I didn't get the job--there wasn't even an election, nor is that how our school determines dept. heads--but the current head bought two gross of whiteboard markers for the stockroom.

@nitsua60 Single issue stumping ftw!
Now, I just need to pick one of my issues... :p

@JohnP ban the mods and resign?
@GcL IIRC that was tried once somewhere.
GcL

Sounds like a very reddit thing to do
sounds like dissolving a HoA
HOA, rather
GcL
GcL
I don't know of anyone that likes their housing association.
20:24
@GcL I despise mine. I pay $35 US (Which is pretty cheap), and as far as I can tell, all they do is nag me about my landscaping and house colors (They are slightly off from the "allowed" list of colors)

One more drop in the anecdotes data bucket
@johnP our HOA managed to cut down shade trees. Across the property line on the property of the neighboring golf course, as well as some that were acting as sound barrier for a major thoroughfare.
@GcL can't be done on reddit for a number of reasons: mods aren't elected, and mods can only demod those below them (and without demodding them, you can't ban them)

Maybe someone else has alreaady asked this and I couldn't find the answer, but any reason @KorvinStarmast hasn't nominated? I'd definitely throw a vote his way...
He's mentioned that he is already a forum mod so his time is less free.
@BESW Ah. Shame. Well, I suppose we have some great candidates anyway!
23:57
@IsaacReefman Thanks Isaac, very kind of you, BESW nailed it. :) We have many good candidates, so we are blessed.
So many nominees
