00:00 - 14:0014:00 - 00:00

12:00 AM
Actually it was hilarious but only because I didn't have to play it

@Ben Spirit Tracks may well be the worst Zelda game ever created.

Wow that bad?
Worse than Faces of Gamelon wands?

Ben
@Miniman [hearty chuckle]

The vast majority of the game consists of watching your train go from place to place, with the occasional need to blow the whistle.

Ben
@trogdor It was a game where train tracks would mysteriously appear, then all of a sudden they stopped appearing - halting all civilisation, exploration, and natural progression

12:03 AM
It's like if Wind Waker was 99% sailing and there was no teleporting using cyclones.

I liked the sailing

Except, yanno...without the steering, cannon, jumping, or anything else that made sailing interesting.

Ben
@Miniman But Wind waker is only 90% sailing. Which was a good balance

But yeah it would have sucked if that was all you did
@Miniman kill me now
XD
Say no more

I too liked the sailing. I even liked Phantom Hourglass (except for the Ocean Temple).

12:04 AM
I will now assume Spirit Tracks isn't worth a look see

It's one of 3 Zelda games I've played and not finished.

user15026
If you played Phantom Hourglass you pretty much played Spirit Tracks, it's pretty much Phantom Hourglass with trains.

Ah well I only have one of those

Ben
Ganon: He-hey! Link! How's it goin buddy? How was that Water Temple?
Link: YOU SHUT YOUR MOUTH

As mentioned Majora's Masochism wasn't my jam

12:06 AM
@Ash Completely disagree. Phantom Hourglass was actually enjoyable.

user15026
@Miniman It was, but it got SO repetitive feeling with having to go back to the dungeon over and ove

@Miniman from what you have said, I would assume adding the tracks added all the evil in

user15026
and Spirit Tracks did that but also boring stupid train bits

user15026
and I say that as someone who REALLY LOVES TRAINS.

@Ash Yeah, that was absolutely the weak point.

user15026
12:07 AM
That's how you know it was bad.

Oh god
Wow

Especially since it was such a boring and annoying dungeon.

user15026
@Ben Those are my top 3.

Yaaaaaas.

user15026
I haven't ever played BoTW, because the open world stuff makes me kinda eeeeeehhhh not so interested

user15026
12:08 AM
I like my games to be relatively linear.

Same actually

Ben
@Ash Precisely, not only are they just great games as a whole, they're segmented very well, so you can play them for as long or as short periods of time as you want/wish/need

user15026
@Ben I liked that.

@Ash I think it worked well because unlike most open-world sandbox games, BotW made travel actually fun. It wasn't just a giant sparse map with too-spaced-out dungeons

I used to like open world games but they started all feeling the same

user15026
12:09 AM
I saved all my allowance for OOA and the boy I had a crush on had OOS and we traded them eventually and it was SO COOL. :P

@Ash I tried it, at a friend's place, and quickly confirmed my belief that despite all the hype it's not for me.

Ben
@MikeQ Like Spiderman 2018. You could fast travel, but it was more fun travelling through the world and disvoering new things

user15026
@trogdor Open world stuff just makes me get so overwhelmed with deciding what to prioritize.

Ben
@Ash Yeeeeeeessss

@Ash My best friend gave me his copy of LA for Christmas, after I had saved for months for a Gameboy.

Ben
12:11 AM
@Ash Actually that's true haha. The third time around I had a plan: 1. Go to the water temple. 2. The sky temple. 3. do some side questing 4. the fire temple.
It still di not happen

user15026
I never really played Skyward Sword but that's because my lack of fine motor and prioperception made it VERY difficult

@Ash for me,... It's partly that, but there usually isn't enough incentive weighted against the level of work you put in for rewards

user15026
@Miniman My sister got a GameBoy for her birthday with LA, she didn't play it a lot but I was home a lot because brain surgery 2x that year (I was 12) so I played it a lot more :P

Hunting the whole world for several of the same thing for a minor reward every time isn't worth my time anymore

Also, open-world games tend to assume that the group has indefinite time for their campaign.

12:13 AM
Nor is the aimless wandering hoping for something cool to happen

user15026
I tend to get paralyzed by choice. This happens a LOT with WoW, for me

user15026
Like I love playing WoW, as long as I can go "okay self, today we are doing x" (or I just wait for my husband to be home and he's like "Okay so we should do this and this and this for the cool gear or the fun pet or whatever")

@Ash WoW feels very similar to open world games to me
I used to love herb hunting
But I don't want to get sucked into doing that for hours anymore

user15026
That's fair. :)

Even if I found I liked it again

user15026
12:15 AM
I don't have the attention span to do much of anything for hours on end

user15026
Also, sorry for like...monopolizing conversation)

You didn't

Ben
It's usually how conversation works haha

You totally joined my hijacking of the room but you were not the ringleader

@Ash On Tuesday I spent an hour explaining the influence of epistemology on depictions of landscape in art. You are still a small grasshopper.

12:19 AM
Unless,... You Masterminded it from the start! You and @Miniman are the true villains :P
You forced me at wordpoint to change this to a Zelda/open world game chat room
Fiends !
Fiendish fiends who,... Fiend?

Yeah, causing people to badmouth open world games is an always-on goal for me.
Just assume I'm generally trying to manipulate the conversation into that at all times, and you won't be too far wrong.

user15026
giggles

@Miniman Where does Wizardry 8 fall into this conspiracy?

Ben
@Miniman Dark souls isn't really "open world" is it..?

They as much as admit thier guilt, I move to dismiss all charges against me as "constantly off topic" ablnd "generally a weird person" and "totally not a dragon"
It's all other people's fault
@BESW a game that looks open world but is actually pretty linear once you figure out what you are supposed to be doing?
I mean, yeah my biggest criticism of Wiz 8 is probably that it could have used a few safety rails

user15026
12:30 AM
@trogdor takes full blame

Wandering aimlessly was probably the biggest time sink other than the combat

@BESW I'd argue that Wizardry 8 is an example of a game that allows you to go anywhere you want without actually being ooen world.

@Ash hehe

Or I guess it's possible that it's both a good game and an open world game, and my limited worldview doesn't allow for that so I refuse to admit that it's an open world game.

I think it really isn't though
It depends on your definition

12:32 AM
But, yanno. Morrowind is a good open world game, and the genre difference between it and Wiz8 is pretty stark.

What about Riven, The Witness, and Dear Esther?

It doesn't quite have the filler of the kind of open working i mean
Hmmm I feel like Riven has a better claim
It's far more open to you doing things in a mixed order
But again, I would argue, an exact definition would be up for debate

Also, are they good games?

@BESW I haven't played any of those, sorry.

I liked Riven
Dear Esther,... I think I only played that for like an hour
The Witness was great

12:36 AM
Dear Esther is one of those "Is this really a game? Let us debate for years and forget whether or not we liked whatever it was" games.

Part if that was playing it with you though @BESW

user15026
@BESW Riven, that's a Myst sequel, right?

I occasionally find myself wondering if oldschool Zelda games are open world. But I'm inclined to say that their progression systems make them far closer to Metroidvanias.

@BESW yeah I feel like it is a game but I might not have liked it that much

@Miniman I'm not sure if you'd like Riven, but it's definitely one of my favorite and most formative game influences.

12:37 AM
@Ash yes

@Ash Yes, the direct sequel and in my opinion the best of the whole series.

It's very good

user15026
I liked the idea of those games but I was very frustrated by them. I wonder if I tried them now if I would like them better - but a lot of those types of puzzles tend to elude me, I can't like...think the right ways to solve what it wants

(The worst is URU, because somebody thought the Myst franchise's next logical step was to become an OTS MMO platformer.)

user15026
(A lot of that is my very routine if this then that thinking patterns - I like rigidity and structure and order)

user15026
12:38 AM
@BESW makes face What even why would you do that

@Ash I will say,.. it was frustrating for me, and I needed help with some bits
I really liked it but those were factors

user15026
@trogdor nods I tend to file games like that into a "I like the idea but want someone else to play them" pile

@BESW I've meant to try a Myst game for a long time now - from everything I've heard (much of it from you) Riven is probably the one I'll go with when (if, sadly) I get around to it.

@Ash Riven took me several years to solve as a tween, but I enjoyed its atmosphere a great deal and the key to the puzzles tended to be to stop thinking of them as puzzles and go "What would I do if I were actually there?"

user15026
(Seriously one of the many many reasons I want immigration to hurry up with my case is that means WorldEngineer will be in my house to play video games while I watch. Or alternately to tell me I can play them and then bail me out when I get mad (like when he got me past Captain Hook in Kingdom Hearts)

12:40 AM
@Ash I am glad I played it myself, figuring out a puzzle was very rewarding, but the points I got stuck at also made me lose it sometimes

user15026
That makes sense.

There was one puzzle I won't give details on, but basically I knew what I was supposed to be doing, but I missed one,... Aspect, not even missed a clue, just a little detail

@BESW There's a common trend among game series to try to become MMOs at a certain point. There's also a common trend within individual games to assume that, despite not having designed the game with platforming in mind, they can totally have platforming sections/elements.

It kept me stumped for several hours and when I figured it out I felt rewarded but also mad

user15026
@Miniman This is a thing that frustrates me! My fine motor cannot take that.

user15026
12:42 AM
Like either make it a platformer so I know not to touch it if it isn't Mario, or don't do the thing.

Yeah, that's one reason I can't recommend the original Myst game to people either; it's got Random Accessibility Blockades.

@Ash It's a weird sort of reversal of our "everything is D&D" problem, where game designers assume that their game is capable of being a platformer regardless of whether they designed it to be.

user15026
@BESW This is why I've not tried it, people who know my limitations are like "you would hate it and want to table flip"

Riven was great but if puzzles can frustrate you easily, as they sometimes do to me, you may indeed want to force someone else to play it or play it with someone else, or do what I did and have someone who beat it before as standby hints, help, or emotional support XD

@Ash Unfortunately, ALL the franchise has them to some degree. Riven has some color cues that will completely stop you if you can't differentiate between primary and secondary colors, and some audio cues that make it much much harder to complete if you can't identify them--though not impossible, I think.

12:46 AM
I do still think it's a great game, but from the perspective of puzzle frustration I did experience a little of that myself

On the plus side, there's only one "click at the right time" puzzle and it can be brute-forced by just clicking as fast as you can.

user15026
@BESW Hm, so I might have issues depending on the colour stuff.

@BESW Ooof, my hearing is fine and I invariably struggle with audio cue puzzles. I can't even imagine what it's like for hearing-impaired players.

@Miniman Yeah, in Myst there's a piano and you have to play a tune on it that you've only heard elsewhere. AAARGH.

12:48 AM
The audio stuff didn't bother me

In Riven, there's some "a sound turned on/off" cues that you did the right/wrong thing, but the only actual "you must use hearing to solve this puzzle" part is where there's a set of symbols with distinct sounds associated with them, and the sounds also occur elsewhere to tell you something else you should associate with each symbol.
But for all but one of the symbols there's also a shape which can be used to make the same association.

However,... The lack of explicit explanation of certain things you need to Know might have sunk me if @BESW hadn't been coaching me
The shapes are what screwed me on that one

user15026
The more you talk about them the more I am glad I have left them in the "I am glad you exist but I don't have to play you" pile

@Ash entirely fair

user15026
Too many games too few spoons :P

12:52 AM
I really don't regret playing Riven myself, but spoons were taken from me and I get the impression you have fewer of those exact kind of spoons than I do

@Ash Maybe some day I can stream it while you watch, or something.

Heh
Sounds like a possible solution

user15026
giggles Outsourced gaming!

It's worth watching

user15026
(a previous partner played through Mass Effect that way with me - she let me pick choices, when appropriate.)

Ben
12:53 AM
@Ash I don't understand that point of view. People go on steam and buy all the free games, then never play them... you suggest a game to play and they say "oh I have all these other ones to play still", and even when you suggest they spend 20 minutes every now and then watching Dragon ball z Abridged they say "I have all these other anime I need to watch"
Why make it a chore?

Maybe not as fun as that feeling I got when I figured something out for myself, but prohibitive cost is way down for sure

user15026
@Ben it's not a chore thing, it's literally I have very few spoons for that kind of braining so I am happy to never touch this thing ever.

@Ben well my take on that is more,.... Having made a decision you don't want to reverse?

user15026
Like I can appreciate someone made it and someone will enjoy it but I am not that person!

Ben
@Ash Ah right. Well that's completely separate then

12:55 AM
Yeah that too
I thought you were taking about a whole separate thing

user15026
I am totally open to like someone going "play this thing" or "read this book" (especially books) and will happily tip over the entire TBR pile if you find me something sufficiently tasty.

Like literally I do have too many games and anime on my "list" right now

Ben
@trogdor I suppose in my experience the people that make that choice aren't doing it for their own enjoyment. They don't like certain shooter games but "oh, this one might be different".
Well. no. It's another COD.

user15026
@Ben Admittedly, doing that is how I found Borderlands, which I do love.

@Ash [reminder to read the Lust Over Pendle sequel]

12:57 AM
And more suggestions for them at this time messes with my ability to process which ones I actually want to spend time on
It's kinda hard to explain I guess

user15026
@BESW Thank you, because yes, it is tasty. I need to put it back on my ereader, it fell off in the last "hey I am going to help you by automatically formatting your reader because I totally understand what you want out of this external drive" thing Windows did to me

user15026
and my brain being the swiss cheese it is, well, it never made it back

It's not simply too many things,.. but somehow the shifting of priorities for new stuff jumbles what I have already

@Ash I know I'm terrible for your TBR list pile spare bedroom.

Ben
@trogdor I can relate to that

1:02 AM
@Ash I hate turning the pile over, I always lose stuff when I do that

user15026
@BESW You are the wooooooorst.

user15026
Like seriously you are worse than my husband who works in a bookstore.

Yep

user15026
(mostly because he has to do managerial things so he can't just go hmmmm what would my wife like)

1:03 AM
@BESW = worst
@Ash can't he just prettend that's on the list of manager things to do? :P

user15026
@trogdor It was worse when he was lead reciever so he saw all the things first

user15026
It was terrible I loved it

Lol

Huh apparently yall starred 2 of my chat messages today. Such an honor!

1:12 AM
@Ben Well, a big part of is simultaneity. Like, if you suggested a game, right now, I'm already in the middle of too many games. I might add it to my todo list, but there's no way I'd start playing it straight away.

That's definitely also part of it for me

Ben
@Miniman Yeah that's fair. I just guess I mean some people apparently need to play all the games. not just the ones they want to play
So when you suggest a game o play they're sort of just like "yah I'll get to it eventually"

But, too, I'm more reluctant to add things to my todo list, because there's a lot on it and I find that a little overwhelming sometimes.
@Ben I can attest that it's easy to end up there even if you only buy/plan to play games you have a genuine interest in.

@Ben FOMO is, largely, about shared community experience.

user15026
@Miniman There are days I frantically go through my Goodreads TBR because 400 thigns is JUST TOO MUCH like I'd have to read nothing but my TBR for a YEAR to get through it. And too many books happen for me to do that.

user15026
1:19 AM
Okay time to face the wintery outside to go home and then needle my cat and figure out what is a dinner.

user15026
Thank you for the conversation today - for reasons, it was very much appreciated in it's welcoming nicenesses.

Ben
I suppose my "TBR/TBP" list is regularly culled. I don't have more than 5 things I want o do at any given time

@Ash (Takes full credit) You're welcome!
2
Although I suspect Ubisoft would disagree about the niceness of this conversation :P

Ben
@MikeQ I went through my list of starred posts yesterday and there was a long list of items that were not far apart and only starred once

@Miniman Ubisoft can go solve a weight-based balancing puzzle.
@Ben I've got more than 2,000 starred posts in this chat, and probably half of them are just one star.

Ben
1:30 AM
Fair enough

user15026
I probably have a lot of stars in the Bridge for silly reasons.

user15026
I think my most starred was my something like oh hey I am on a bus going to get married, though.

1:43 AM
Lol
@BESW yeah yeah
Sssstaaaarsssss

2:04 AM
Our latest Fate World of Adventure is Clockwinders by Jahmal Brown! Journey across the aether-tainted world of Cadvini to restore the clockwork order of the world before it is too late. And beware the machinations of the Fey. As always it's #PayWhatYouWant https://www.drivethrurpg.com/product/266187/The-Clockwinders-o-A-World-of-Adventure-for-Fate-Core?affiliate_id=24139

Ok, I just watched the trailer (for the LA remake), and there's one thing that I am absolutely not OK with.

LA remake? It's about time they rebooted that city.

Link's Awakening, sorry. It kinda sparked this whole conversation.

Ben
I'm with @BESW :P

Are they nerfing the traffic?

user15026
2:08 AM
@Miniman I haven't watched it yet, I should find it.

@Ash I'm very grateful that Nintendo posts the individual trailers so that I don't have to watch a half hour video to find the bits I'm interested in.

Ben
@BESW What about emergency responses? I hope that's getting a buff
@Miniman Maybe we might actually get a Nayru game this time...
WAIT. WOAH. WHAT
Why is there chain chomps....????

@Ben Do you mean a Farore game? And even then it doesn't make much sense.

@Ben Because the original had chain chomps. ;-)

Ben
And Goombas??

2:12 AM
Yep!

And cheep cheeps and goombas, yes.

Ben
[Squints]
Ok.

@Ben I thought you'd played link's Awakening?

Ben
@Miniman OOA and OOS - Din and Farore were the Maidens needing rescue
They aren't part of Link's awakening
@Miniman It was ages ago haha

@Ben Din and Nayru. Farore was the Oracle of Secrets.

Ben
2:13 AM
I played OOS again only a couple of years ago

@Ben Hence my confusion :P

They all cameo equally in Minish Cap.

@Ben Random footage, @~2:45

Ben
@CTWind Ohhh yup.
That's familiar. I guess it was just the change between the 3d/2d format. It looked weird
@Miniman Yes.
That's right

And 33:55 for the 2d section with other guys.
Er, I guess the whole game is rather 2d. Sidescrolling. >_>

user15026
2:17 AM
@Miniman Okay, watched the trailer now, curious what you're not okay with

Ben
@Ash also yes

@Miniman The problem is that it's clearly a Link's Awakening DX remake, since the game isn't in monochrome. ;-)

I feel like remakes are a minefield

I'm waiting for the re-re-remake before officially becoming jaded

Any change you make could be removing something people liked or adding an unnecessary thing

Ben
2:19 AM
@MikeQ That suggestion makes me uneasy

@Ash They hit LA Link with The Curse of the Tiny Sword!

user15026
@Miniman ooooh oh yes they did

Tiny sword?

Ben
@trogdor The blade it as long as the hilt

@trogdor In LA, OoA, and OoS, Link has a sword that can actually hit enemies without having Link headbutt them.

2:20 AM
Oh

Sadly, this is not the norm for Link, especially in the 2D games.

Ok then
Yeah that sucks

I've never beaten ALttP, purely because Link's sword is so tiny that I find it impossible to hit an enemy without also getting hit.

@Miniman That sounds like someone mis-remembering the "Witch Doctor" lyrics.

@Miniman I have always found that annoying too
It's never caused me to quit a Zelda game but it's definitely annoyed me
I forget it's name but in one of them that I played it was really bad because it had that mixed in with platforming
And random encounters

@trogdor ...Zelda 2: The Adventure Of Link?

@vicky_molokh So I'm just skimming over the day's discussion and probably don't have the full context, but let me say that if "enforc[ing] their worldview as the only acceptable one and shut[ting] down other perspectives" is happening here, please do either raise a meta or flag it for moderator attention.

hey there @nitsua60

@Glazius bingo
That's the one

@nitsua60 The phrase "enforc[ing] their worldview as the only acceptable one and shut[ting] down other perspectives" here refers to closing questions for not specifying a system.

2:48 AM
@Miniman ....whaaaaaaa?!
how is asking someone to specify what they're talking about so that we know what worldview they're coming from stuffing a specific worldview down their throat?

@Shalvenay I encourage you to read the whole conversation so that you have the context. The short version is that "system matters" is the worldview in question.

@Miniman ah.
@vicky_molokh -- looking at your earlier convo re: system-sense-first vs. world-sense-first or story-sense-first -- part of the idea of "system matters" is that when you go to select a system, you have an idea of what sort of world/story experience you are wishing to create, and thus can be informed by that when picking a system/tailoring it to your needs
there's also the issue that different systems set up very different abstraction-sets/lexicons -- you can "think in GURPS" or "think in Fate" the same way programmers talk about "thinking in C++" or "thinking in Python"
and like programming languages, RPG systems are extremely widely variable
in a way that someone who doesn't have a wide exposure to them isn't going to grasp intuitively straight-away
D&D, Fate, and say Amber Diceless are as different from each other as say Perl, Verilog, and Prolog

Ben
So after that week of flooding with rainfall of up 10 1.4m in a week, we are now being hit with a dust storm blowing in from the South West

3:03 AM
@Shalvenay I would phrase it more like reading a murder mystery, a historical drama, and a sci fi space adventure but wtv works

@trogdor that's also a good analogy :)

Ben
The forecast says it's not meant to hit until 4am Saturday, But I can't see the Mountain on the other side of the city (Which I can normally see clearly out the office window)

@Ben Just think of it as seeing billions of little tiny mountains.

hey there @JoelHarmon, how're things going?

Ben
Well, in the past month our weather has been: Heatwave, flood, tornado, dust storm

3:08 AM
@Shalvenay Hey there. Pretty busy, but hopefully things will settle back down soon. Yourself?

@JoelHarmon OK here

Ben
Heatwave hit 42C, Flood was worst flood in 100 years, and the dust storm I can see now isn't meant to hit for another 2 days.
Come to Australia - if the weather doesn't kill you, it'll make sure you never leave!
Lol

Lol

@Shalvenay hiya

@nitsua60 how're things going? got some time to talk?

3:13 AM
Pretty crappy, actually. So not really, sorry.

@nitsua60 awww :/

Ben
@nitsua60 I'm sorry to hear that

Ditto.

Thanks. People who need it are in the hands of medical care, on two different fronts in my life. So that's a good thing. Just been a long day.

Ben
I know there's not much I can offer, but if there is anything, let me know :)

3:19 AM
Thanks--a good night's sleep, which I'm due to start in 10, will do wonders.
(Also, my boss announced this afternoon that everyone gets to come in 90min late tomorrow, which has just-about made my week.)

@nitsua60 :(

@Ben It'd be cool if there was an rpg.se blog that we could all throw these kinds of things into. When I've got some time, I might look at setting something up.
cc @Miniman if I remember this kinda fell a bit flat didn't it?

Not one mini made but there is such a place
Where posting died relatively fast

Ben
@trogdor Oh?

I posted 3 or so GM stories
BESW posted some stuff too, and magician and,... A couple of other people?
It was a while ago

Ben
Possibility of revival?

A couple years at least I think
I don't know
I didn't set it up
I dunno if the site can't be edited anymore or if it's only dead because no one goes there or wtv
I could hunt the link for it up when I get home if you wanted to look at it
I think at least you can still read the posts that were made

Ben
3:53 AM
Sounds good :D

Last time I checked at least

@Ben Yeah, I started setting something up, but there didn't seem to be a lot of interest.

Ben
Ah I didn't hear much about it.

@trogdor That was a different proposition, which got a lot further.

Q: Would an RPG Blog get read?

DForck42I'm curious if there's enough interest here for there to be a blog. Here's the list of what needs to be figured out: Raise the idea on the child meta. A community blog needs the involvement of community members. These blogs don’t exist to be the personal blog of a community member. They are ...

@Miniman Ah ok I didn't know what the specifics were
I just know there was a blog

Ben
It is a commitment

hey there @KorvinStarmast, how're things going?

@Shalvenay I am frowning because vicky thinks that a discussion prompt is a proper form of stack question. It's been driven into my head here that they are not.
but some of vicky's questions intrigue the heck out of me

@KorvinStarmast yeah, Vicky asks questions that are not bad questions, they just are not always great fits for the Stack format

@Shalvenay Yeah; on the bright side, they always get me thinking. We went out for Valentine's day a day early. Great dinner, no crowds. :)

4:09 AM
@KorvinStarmast got some time to talk on Discord btw? got an interesting FR lore question for you if you don't mind :)

yes, coming up discord now
@Shalvenay discord being quirky tonight, gimme a few ..

@KorvinStarmast still being problematic?

4:39 AM

In a universe adjacent to our own lies a world known as Runia. This world, once peaceful and idyllic, is now threatened by a monstrous being from its prehistory. A group of adventurers known as Whiskey Company have risen up to do what they can to fight this entity known only as Nagat. They have trekked far across the mortal realms in search of the shards of Barrinoth, the Titan of Justice, in hopes of returning him to his full power.

Now bound into the service of Lizeth, the Emissary of the Raven Queen, they prepare for the next leg of t

Ok, nite all, best wishes all around now that my connection is back up

@nitsua60 The case I've been involved in was ultimately resolved in favour of letting people post answers in line with the question and from a roleplaying PoV, but thanks for the support. I'll keep that in mind for future cases.

8:14 AM
Stream just ended. We were joined by some new members, said goodbye to an old one (one of our original members), and even got a fight in! VOD should be on Twitch right now and on Youtube tomorrow (hopefully).

What did we decide if two questions have the same answer? I can't find the meta off hand

It often means they're the same question, and one should be closed as a dupe of the other.
If they aren't the same question, then it's all good, no fuss needed.

Q: If an answer to question A can be found in question B, should we close A as duplicate of B?

enkryptorRelated: Non-duplicate question with answer in another question Should/can we change the Duplicate notification? Situation — there are two different questions Aq and Bq. Question Aq has a specific answer Aa. Question Bq has a good detailed answer, which includes points Aa, Ba and Ca. Should ...

@goodguy5 ^

ah, yes. thank you

1:44 PM
@Rubiksmoose So a person submitting a question, could follow due diligence, and still get their question closed because unbeknownst to them a complete different question happens to have the same answer?

@ColinGross Not really. Check out the first bullet point: "It's the same question, or Question A is already covered obviously as a subset of Question B. Obvious here means I can tell at a glance it's there."
The basis for duplication is always that the question is the same and not the answer.

So only for a subset? It's not clear if @doppelgreener meant "for all of these cases" or "when all of the following criteria is true"

There should never be shame in posting a duplicate. It means you've provided an extra path toward answers, and you get an answer immediately!

@ColinGross I don't follow.
What do you mean by subset?

@BESW Sure... except that it uses the same machinery as closing questions for all the other "bad" reasons.

1:49 PM
Yes, the Stack's infrastructure is deeply flawed in that regard.

@Rubiksmoose "It's the same question, or Question A is already covered obviously as a subset of Question B. Obvious here means I can tell at a glance it's there."

The Stack Exchange system is not a compassionate design, but there is technically no punishment in getting a question closed unless you manage to get many closed in a very narrow time span.

@ColinGross To rephrase he is saying if 1) the question is the same (same wording, same core issue, very obviously the same) or 2) A is a clear subset of B
I'm just kind of unclear what you are asking about.

(There is, as you say, guilt-by-association in terms of the mechanics in play.)

> We close Question A as a duplicate of Question B when all of these are the case:

1:55 PM
@Rubiksmoose That means a logical AND between all those criteria?

@ColinGross That is the intent as I understand it.

@Rubiksmoose So the duplicate question has to have an answer. A question that is a subset of an unanswered question is not marked as duplicate?
@goodguy5 I hate that. The stack doesn't care though.

The question in the title is very interesting and I think worth asking (might even already have an answer somewhere)

@ColinGross That is actually an interesting question and a case that is not covered by that answer.

1:58 PM
but cannot be clearly asked because the bugbear question is "hogging" the title.

@ColinGross it's an AND
> We close Question A as a duplicate of Question B when all of these are the case:

I think it is covered. Not having an answer negates the second criteria, so don't mark as duplicate.

I'm not sure we have a meta about it. I know I wrote an answer about duping to a closed question (I argued we shouldn't)

@doppelgreener Yeah, i read that as meaning "for all of these cases"
Not "when a two questions satisfy all of the following conditions or criteria"

@ColinGross I mean that is a logical and literal reading of the answer, but I'm not sure that result is intended to be implied that way.
And if it is, I'm not sure that it should be.
