9:00 PM
@Xirema can they? I'm not doubting you because they can a ton of stuff.

@Rubiksmoose Psionic Restoration. Once the Mystic becomes capable of outputting 5 PSI points of power (5th level; basically equivalent to third level spells, as one might expect) the 5 PSI feature of that Discipline can cast Revivify with no material component.

@nitsua60 No hyphen.

@Xirema wow, that is really nice.

Or, more precisely: it causes an effect that is, in mechanical effect, identical to Revivify.
> Restore Life (5 psi). As an action, you touch one creature that has died within the last minute. The creature returns to life with 1 hit point. This ability can't return to life a creature that has died of old age, nor can it restore a creature missing any vital body parts.
They also get Greater Restoration as part of that same discipline.
> Restore Vigor (7 psi). As an action, you can touch one creature and choose one of the following: remove any reductions to one of its ability scores, remove one effect that reduces its hit point maximum, or reduce its exhaustion level by one.

@Rubiksmoose Probably. I'm sure it got a lot of feedback about being too versatile and such, and being weird as its own totally separate system from magic

9:05 PM
Are disciplines the ones they can switch pretty much whenever?
@V2Blast And being like 40 pages long :|

ye

(which yeah I know a lot of that was psionic abilities listing like spells but still)

it's probably not that much longer than a class description + spell list for that class, but that's part of the problem

@Rubiksmoose Disciplines are like memorized spells for Sorcerers, Warlocks, etc. They learn a certain amount over their progression and can swap one of them out each level up.
Each Discipline has a "Focus" ability (think Channel Divinity, but passive) and then like 4-5 abilities that each require PSI use.

@Xirema that sounds pretty powerful but not substantially more powerful than a class that can cast Revivify w/ material components. It only requires, what, a diamond/diamonds worth 100 gold?

9:08 PM
Ah yeah. Its coming back to me a bit (I ran a game with a mystic and it was fun but a decent amount of work to understand it for me)
@TylerH 300 I think?

@TylerH It's just weird that they'd print a class whose features are "like a Cleric, but strictly better".

@TylerH and even if it is 100 it still is pretty darned restrictive.

Or in this case, "like a 'X', but strictly better".

@Xirema Well, that's a fair point; I'm not familiar with psionics (never played/watched pre-5E) or the proposed class for Mystic, but I expect there will be some other drawbacks/limitations to the class

@TylerH besides opportunity cost, there really isn't

9:11 PM
@Rubiksmoose I suppose it depends on how liberal the DM is with gold in the campaign (and how difficult the encounters are), to a degree.

Like, the Mastery of Light and Darkness Discipline has a level 1 feature that lets you ignore Normal or Magical Darkness within 30 feet.

The mystic is extremely versatile.

Even Warlocks don't get that until level 2.

I'll have to check out the available material after work; I hear Psionics were a beloved part of earlier versions of D&D

And the literal Shadow Sorcerer archetype only gets to ignore their own Magical Darkness, not that of other creatures/effects.

9:12 PM
are they particularly squishy like a wizard? E.g. low bonus to hit dice?

@TylerH The 5e adaptation was not quite so beloved. Partially because they lumped all the psionic classes into one.

Nope. D8, Light Armor.

@TylerH And they can be very very durable given the right discipline as well.

Sounds like I have a new potential class to use if my current war domain cleric kicks the bucket :-)

> Mystical Recovery. Immediately after you spend psi points on a psionic discipline, you can take a bonus action to regain hit points equal to the number of psi points you spent.
"like a Paladin, but strictly better"

9:16 PM
@TylerH if your DM is game and accepts UA then it should be interesting at the very least.

We already use quite a bit from unofficial stuff, to an almost frustrating degree

Ah well it sounds like it will fit right in then lol

I could break a campaign over my knee with a Soul Blade Order Mystic. Holy Heck.
It's basically Hexblade but on steroids.

I honestly feel like Mystic is just rife with exploits.
Not that I've seen any in person, but it just seems like it has to be there somewhere

"Why yes, I would like to have a +4 weapon at level 9, that sounds just lovely! What? I can get that for the sole cost of a 5th level spell slot for 10 minutes with no concentration? Aww gee, that sounds swell!"

9:24 PM
wow

Oh, by the way, Mystics innately get a +1d8/+2d8 to their weapon attacks at levels 8/14 respectively.
Now, sure, they don't get the Extra Attack feature...

@Xirema That sounds like somebody completely forgot about bounded accuracy.

Like, to be fair, the DMG does specify +4 weapons as a theoretical possibility for Top Tier characters.
Like, +4, but no other additional features or effects of the weapon makes it a Legendary quality item.
But still...
I dunno. Maybe I shouldn't be too harsh. I don't think they would have released this as playtest material if they didn't think there were issues with it.
But a lot of this stuff also seems like really obvious, first-pass editing stuff.

Psh, you should have SEEN the first pass stuff.
(I assume)

"Mystic - first pass - Rolls a 1d20 for each hit die"

9:35 PM
How all my Will Smith's doing?

> Order of the Wu Jen, Arcane Dabbler. At 6th level, you learn three wizard spells of your choice and always have them prepared. The spells must be of 1st through 3rd level. As a bonus action, you can spend psi points to create spell slots that you can use to cast these spells, as well as other spells you are capable of casting. The psi-point cost of each spell slot is detailed on the table below. [Insert Sorcerer Flexible Casting Table]
"Like a Sorcerer, but strictly better"

X'D
Damn that CGI is impeccable.

oh my

I didn't understand the universe, but that music video really clears things up for me. Thanks man

At the risk of giving away my age, I was obsessed with that song when I was a kid.

9:42 PM
I was too, but mostly high school, and I wasn't born until 1990. Which of course was like 15 years ago, it feels like
oh wait, I'm older than you

So you guys lived and died by the blue?

We are not yet at the age of being embarrassed about being old fogies!

@Xirema Given that the song has been featured in various places, such as Iron Man 3, you could be pretty young and still obsessed with the song as a kid.

I remember reading a James Cameron interview about it being the main source of inspiration for his Avatar universe.

Really? I thought it was just a Pocahontas re-skin

9:45 PM
A beautiful blend of the two

@TylerH Not by much though!

Better to be an old fogie than a part of todays youth

10:22 PM

Never describe anything that you're not prepare to make the sole focus of a minor story arc spanning multiple sessions
Also, never give any friendly NPC a distinct personality that you're not willing to let your players "adopt" and drag along with them because they think the NPC is cool/has something to hide/will serve as a good meat shield.

Don't shoot yourself in the foot with Chekov's gun

@doppelgreener lol

@MikeQ I think this is more like you leaving some metal scraps lying around and your players MacGuyver-ing one gun, model "Chekhov", out of it and pointing it at you ;)

10:49 PM
Although it's too late, I would be remiss not to point out that Avatar is unquestionably the live-action remake of Ferngully.

11:09 PM
@BESW It grows like a weed in Southern Texas. My wife loves that plant, particularly when it blooms, but I do not care for its habits of expansion.

We're in the middle of a big snowstorm here in southern BC. Meanwhile, in Russia...

@V2Blast HFH looks like fan service, maybe.
@Miniman I made that observation when it came out, though it also had a lot of the Disney animated Pocohontas woven into it as well.

11:35 PM
hey there @KyleDoyle, welcome to the RPG.SE lair :)

@ACuriousMind also never make one single NPC the lynchpin of the current plot, because they will almost certainly either completely avoid the NPC or immediately murder them, whichever one is more likely to derail everything
