12:04 AM
@MikeQ I was hoping it wasn't an alternate term for Romani/Travellers or stereotyped fantasy equivalent.

@BESW Nah, I was thinking along the lines of some cart-hybrid humanoid

12:32 AM
@BESW hah, no. simply that the party was on a wagon at the time

1:01 AM
@BESW So he missed the part where a pack of cards can be PbtA if you say so. apocalypse-world.com/pbta/policy
No, it's not using the engine, but.

By that definition, it is not PbtA.

It does not follow the PbtA IP policy, nor does it use the PbtA logo. By virtue of trade dress, Blades is PbtA as much as it's Burning Wheel and Fallout and Fate.
@Glazius You're arguing from authority now, and granting authority to neither the creator of the game nor its publisher, but to people who created some of the game's inspirational sources.
Look, let's go back to the original context: Fred Hicks is talking about Apocalypse-style playbooks and showing how Blades' playbooks are unlike them.
Fred Hicks has personal stakes in having acertained whether or not Blades is legally PbtA, because his company published Blades without that attribution. He's also a game designer who supported the development of the game, and is speaking in that thread as a designer of games materials and discussing how Blades materials are unlike PbtA materials.

Except that PbtA is more of an artistic movement than a theory of game mechanics.
No, not theory, the other thing.
Praxis?

Your argument seems to be that it's PbtA because it's similar to PbtA and it's listed as PbtA on a third-party site.

By the "artistic movement" argument, everything that ever reminds us of a seminal game engine is also that game engine.

...I'm not sure how apocalypse-world.com is a third-party site, except by technicality.

Because it's not associated with the game we're talking about.
It's not run by anybody involved in designing, producing, or publishing Blades in the Dark.

But it is run by the founders of the Powered by the Apocalypse movement?

Who say that it's not up to them to decide if something's PbtA?

1:16 AM
Right. So Blades isn't there because they want to claim it.

That's like saying that Jonathan Tweet can decide if D&D 5e is a d20 System game.
D&D 5e doesn't carry the d20 System label or use the d20 System policies, so no matter how much it rides on the shoulders of the d20 System it's not a d20 System game.
Specifically for context: Blades character sheets are not PbtA playbooks. That's the point.
Blades' sheets don't follow even the "artistic movement" definition of PbtA, they simply use the general format as a jumping-off point.

I mean, I'd say the main thing they do is add in the heist loadout mechanic, so the "starting equipment" section stays relevant all through the game.
And as a result it can let the available equipment express the central identity and functionality of a character so it doesn't need to lead into a big page-devouring mechanic.
Like, whenever the Spider kits up for a heist, they can have a fine-quality cover identity if they want one.

I also think it's very dangerous to give a playstyle the weight of a brand, which is what the "praxis" argument seems to be advocating.

Er, no, I said it's not a praxis.
There are diceless games in there.
Engine? Was engine the word?

Ben
2:17 AM
Hey everybody!

[wave]

Ben
How's life?

busier and busier. You?

Ben
Wetter and wetter. Townsville has been declared a "disaster zone", due to flooding. The schools are closed, most of the roads are closed, but I'm still at work haha
IT's been raining heavily for 4 days straight now

Urg
Why did you still go to work?
It sounds a little dangerous

Ben
2:30 AM
Not overly. Only some roads are closed, primarily the highways leading in/out of town. The flooded areas are out of bounds, for those reasons

Q: How should we handle answers that use Jeremy Crawford's now unofficial tweets?

AdamThe 2019 sage advice compendium has released, and it includes a change to what is considered "official rulings." Previously, Jeremy Crawford had the capacity to make official rulings over twitter. This is no longer the case. As stated in the updated compendium: Official rulings on how to int...

Ben
@TheOracle The rate at which the tweets are treated as official or not is dizzying...

Really sorta hammers home how little "official" matters compared to experience-based "does it work?"

Ben
2:45 AM
I.e. Monopoly

@Ben ah fair enough I guess, I guess the question came from the fact that I don't think I could go anywhere if it was raining hard for four days myself
I don't think any of the roads I could possibly take to get to work would still be viable after that
The main one is almost unusable after just one day of rain

Ben
Yeah. Here we're right on the coast, so flooding isn't something that happens everywhere in town

The main road right around my area is sitting right next to a mangrove swamp

We've got a lot of roads very near the water table.

It floods fassssst
Yeah

2:50 AM
Roads that go over swampfill, or through inlets.

Ben
Oh lovely

Especially in the south, where Troggy is.
The north is mostly limestone so the water goes down a few hundred feet before it hits the water lens floating on top of the basalt beneath.
The south is mostly basalt with a thin layer of dirt.

And technically the second road if choice is worse
It's completely ripped up, has been for a while, and rain really gets the rocks strewn into the road

Ben
Oh lovely
WE haven't had weather this bad for nearly 20 years actually

At least most of our roads have been re-paved without limestone for fill.
Limestone asphalt gets super slippery when it's wet.
But there are places where the water crossing the road gets strong enough that it just floats the asphalt right off.

3:00 AM
And it's only compounded by weird,... Strategies for fixing the road
Like using sandbags to fill it back up, or my personal favorite of ripping the road up seven times and not actually fixing it
Not mad at all bro

Ben
Oh that sounds productive

Yeah and I can't even think of a reasonable excuse for it at that point
I've heard of the road being worked on as many as three different times because that many utilities needed to install or fix something and didn't communicate with each other
But the road I take home was ripped up seven times or so

Ben
Communication seems to be the one thing that the government really just does not do.

We don't have seven different utility agencies that would need to work on stuff under or related to the road

Somebody once told me that our utility and infrastructure agencies coordinated very well for about five years in the 70s.

3:12 AM
Lol

Ben
I feel like there's a narcotics joke in there somewhere
Can I get some feedback about this comment over on gaming.se?

@Ben seems fine to me
"no" is a valid answer to "can I do this?"
hey there @nitsua60

Ben
The comment is fine or the answer is?

@Ben both are

Ben
The way I read it is that the comment is saying the answer is wrong, but then points out information that doesn't relate to the validity of the answer?

3:19 AM
@Ben oh, I thought you were talking about your reply comment, not Manchineel's comment

Ben
Yeah sorry if that was unclear

ah -- I think he means that your answer, while correct in the specific case raised by the OP, seems to imply it might not be that way for the general case when the answer's the same for the general case as the OP's case

Ben
Right. That makes sense I guess. The information provided is only summarised to provide evidence to the answer - it's not misquoted at all, just excerpted from the full text which goes into more detail.
Either way, I'll leave it.

Sounds good

Ben

Q: What is the world record for the longest D&D marathon?

Trevor FaitI have been looking for awhile to find the world record for the longest Dungeons and Dragons marathon because me and my friends had a plan to try and attempt to beat it and give the money from the stream (if we get any) to my school's Gaming and Anime Club. So if you have the answer to this quest...

hey there @goodguy5

Ben
4:08 AM
All this hoopla... several suburbs have been evacuated, road closures, and now the army is on standby. This is getting very exciting.
And my worst problem is that my clothes won't dry due to the 90% humidity

4:25 AM
Oh my

Ben
I think the reaction has been "Oh wow... that a lot of rain" to "Hey the dam is overflowing for the first time in 12 years!" to "Oh look, the shopping centre is flooded. Lol" but now they've forecast another week of 200m/day. So yeah... best prepare just in case

1 hour later…

> Interrogator. Once per scene you can force a target to reveal a fact they'd rather conceal, but they get to choose what fact they reveal unless you offer a compel on one of their character aspects and they accept it.
Or, hm.
> Interrogator. Once per scene you can force a target to reveal a fact they'd rather conceal. If they give you a fate point, they get to choose what fact they reveal.
Or a more PbtA-style verison...
> Interrogator. Once per scene you can force a target to clearly and truthfully answer a direct question. If they give you a fate point, you must ask two questions and they choose which to answer.

@Ben My brother lives in Chicago. -50F. Slight disaster, and I am glad he had a house to be in.
@trogdor FWIW, I was in two typhoons while in Japan and went to work both times. It's a thing. (no, not the best thing, but a thing)
But I'd rather not that be a habit ....

5:54 AM
@KorvinStarmast my dad went out once to drag the generator into the house after the shed it was in got ripped up by the wind, we still tell him he should not have done that
I wouldn't recommend traveling in the middle of a Typhoon

Yeah, that risk reward thing is uneven ....
As I age I guage the balance differently

Definitely

4 hours later…
9:46 AM
@BESW Hm, I feel a big point of those PbtA moves is that this bit of the conversation happens between the players, not the characters; the term “direct question” is misleading.

10:18 AM
Hmm, true.

2 hours later…
12:08 PM
Ciao a tutti. How's it going?

> Helsinki, Finland
Writes in Italian.
something is fishy here

Finally got my magazine draft signed off as ready to prep for printing. Spent the afternoon outlining text, which is considered practically archaic by most but the client's chosen publisher ships large print jobs to an international printer so they don't trust typefaces to render properly. Just as I wrapped up and exported the print-ready document, got three pages of new copy revisions from a project member who'd been on leave until today.

@Derpy I try to be a reasonably multilingual person!
I don't remember how to greet everyone present in Swahili though.

12:49 PM
Client: Why is this file empty?!
Bossish person: Developers! Why is this file empty?!
Developer: The table summary says it's not.
Bossish: Did we mess up the transfer?!
Developer (me): Nope. Transfer has the file all good. Have they tried redownloading the file?
Bossish: ....
Developers: ....
Client: ....

I eagerly await the client asking why all the diacriticals are missing from the outlined text, and I will point them to the second email I sent on the job, which says outlining text makes diacriticals go away.

@Shalvenay btw, sorry if it seems like I frequently don't respond to you. I usually just check se for a minute on my phone in the evenings and don't get the notification until morning.

(This is why, when I was given the responsibility of selecting the printer for previous issues, I didn't use the cheapest one.)

ha
I mean, I don't know what diacriticals are, but I get the idea

å, ü, é, that kind of thing.

12:54 PM
oooohhhh
This woman just emailed me back "Can we resend the file, if needed?"

And I'm like "no. it's already on the drop zone. they just need to download it."

Å/å is a fun letter

what does that do?

It's called the "Swedish o" here, and it's pronounced consistently the way we pronounce "o"
Similar to English... I think it's called short o? Like in "Tom" or "Colt"
in Swedish, "o" can either be that or similar to the "oo" in "doom"

In Chamoru, a is pronounced like the a in English "car" (IPA /a/) while å is "cat" (IPA /æ/).
eg, the capital of Hagåtña.

IPA /æ/ is "ä" here
In Swedish, "ä" is more often pronounced "e" though (IPA /e/)

1:02 PM
@BESW Is that saying that during this step of the process diacriticals won't be apparent, but they're really there for the final product, or that using this process means that diacriticals shall not be used because they get stripped anyway?

@nitsua60 The outlining process that the client's chosen publisher requests, strips out diacriticals (and also bullet points), irretrievably.
I have an alternative that I'm going to see if they accept.

Ugh. That seems undesirable, no? (Though I suppose that's why in e-mail 2 you said "you know this means no diacriticals, right?")

I know!

But I don't have high hopes, and if they do insist on their way... it'll also take five times as long.

take a screenshot of the page, and paste THAT in with the outline

1:05 PM
Yes, it DOES seem undesirable. Especially for a multilingual literary magazine with a recent reputation for getting the orthographies right.
Which is why the previous people in charge of the magazine were happy to pay more for local printing with hot-off-the-press proofs.
@goodguy5 That's almost literally my alternative solution.

That's idiotic
not by you

If you put a 1-pixel-by-1-pixel transparent Photoshop file on each page of the document, then when you export the document to a PDF for printing you can step the version back to one that doesn't know how to handle transparencies automatically, which gives you access to manual controls that, if you've fiddled with the control settings beforehand, include an "outline text" option that uses the Acrobat text-outlining protocols instead of the InDesign outlining protocols.
And Acrobat knows how to outline diacriticals and bullet points, because Adobe bought Acrobat from people who knew what they were doing.

ha
what are you exporting FROM?

InDesign 2018, part of the Adobe Creative Cloud. Urgh.

oh, I just saw something about indesign, but I think it's an older version, lemme dig it up
oof 2008, but maybe there's something useful on the site.

1:13 PM
Yup, that's the process I described above.

that's dumb haha

i have a strange urge to play Final Fantasies 7-10
Even though consciously, I remember the frustration and grind

@kviiri I want to break out The Journeyman Project 3.

much?

1:15 PM
@nitsua60 Yes, except this is the accepted best practice by much of the industry.
(Though, every single person who describes the practice, will preface it with WHO IS ASKING YOU TO OUTLINE TEXT RUN AWAY.)

Wait, when you say "outline" do you mean literally drawing a stroke that follows the contour of each glyph but leaves the inside blank?

Kinda.
In this context, "outline" means turning the text, character-by-character, from editable type to vector art that theoretically looks identical.

Oh, jeez. I was assuming it was some term of art, not... that.
Oh, nevermind.

@goodguy5 Ooh hey we have this too!

wait, besw
you have that discord with a bunch of stackizens

1:19 PM
Vector art is math-based outlines instead of pixel-based fill; "outlining" means turning each character into a mathematical equation that describes the contour of the glyph, and then telling the program to fill that contour with however many black pixels are necessary.
@goodguy5 I doooo.
I'm still a little confused by how that happened, but it's there.

@goodguy5 For I'm at home there
...or wait, was the verse "I want to roam there / for I'm at home there"

@goodguy5 Heh. For what purpose? There's a room where sometimes people play 5e stuff, and that's about it right now.

I'm a collector of discords.

I mean, there's a room where I link random stuff I come across, and one for my own Saturday night games, but that's not Stackery.
@goodguy5 Fair enough. Link expires in 1 day.

1:27 PM
@BESW and I'm in

I don't collect Discords. I've got mine, and three I basically never look at--one for a casual friend, one for the Starry Expanse Project, and one for Haganistan.

1:45 PM
I've got like 30 or something.
mine.
3-4 I pay attention to
1-2 I check when I need something.
28, I just counted

just wondering... Does anyone know if the story about the Illuminati CCG, a tournament and a pretty creative use of a card called "I lied" is true?
(or - would asking that be OT on the site?)

@BESW Gotcha. To "outlining" is a term of art for raster-->vector?

Yeah.

Thanks.

Or, in this case, virtual typeface vector to ordinary vector.

Rob
2:10 PM
Bloomin' bananas, I'm sure there should be a simplier way than googling to get to these chat rooms...

@Rob ?

Rob
@Derpy Couldn't find a link on the main page to get here, probably just code-blinded it

@Rob ^ here.

Rob
@Derpy Hmmm, that is not on my page (from rpg.stackexchange.com) Aha... it is however, hidden at the bottom - running chrome/linux here
But, anyway; ahem; anyone have suggestions for a system/way to run guilds, like thieves/merchants guilds (Kinda list question, hence not asking normally)

@Rob Hiya! I guess the first question would be what do you want out of such a mechanic
You could borrow stuff from Apocalypse World playbooks Hocus and Hardholder for instance, but they assume a very particular connection between the organization and the game

Rob
2:18 PM
@kviiri Good question; so I can manage the organisation and know what sort of things it can do, what obstacles it faces, number of people in it and so on; at the moment my best idea is to just use the Cyberpunk method of treating it like a person/entity
A PC is in charge of these organisations and wants to do stuff, expand influences and work against other similar organisations

@Rob weird.

Rob
If it's simple enough to do then I may also use it for managing the clergy structures
@kviiri What do you mean by "very particular connection"?

Ah, so they're looking to have an impact on the setting via "organization x"

Rob
@goodguy5 Indeed; it's quite a high level game and the characters are moving from smacking monsters in the face to getting a group of likeminded loonies to do their bidding

Then it sounds like it's time for the adventurers to retire, imo.

Rob
2:25 PM
@goodguy5 Well, game has been going for 25 years, I'm not ready to wind it down yet ;)

@Rob Sounds like it's way overdue for new adventurers. Maybe keep the old high level characters around for one shots or plot devices.

holy s.... almon
but I agree with Colin
"My little CEO" is not D&D. Personally, I wouldn't want to do it.

Rob
The game is mostly running via email now; so it's mostly social interactions rather than smacking stuff in the face... don't think there's been a fight in, hmmm, 5 months or so

@Rob One fun thing that my friends father did while running a 2nd edition campaign was to take our low level characters through a dungeon that his high level party had cleared when he was playing in the 70's
We found the corpses and remains of some big bad a$$ monsters, and ended up dealing with the small scavenger type inhabitants that were moving in

@Rob ah, that makes an amount more sense.

2:28 PM
The whole point of the little romp was to pick up a mcguffin that was too low power for the high level characters to even care about.

@ColinGross thank you, noted. great dungeon idea. I've had similar ideas, but not already picked through dungeons

@Rob Aren't there better play by email systems than D&D? Also, have you tried fantasy grounds or roll20 ?

Howdy! My daughter wants to run an Aarakocra in D&D5e. Can anyone tell me in which book they are described?

@KieranMullen Those are in Volos?

Rob
@ColinGross The system is actually Rolemaster; but there's very little dice rolling, it's mostly social as I say :)

2:30 PM
@ColinGross Not sure what the book that is :-(

No... not volos that's got asimar

Rob
@ColinGross So it averages a couple of emails a day

Volos Guide to Monsters

Last D&D game I ran was AD&D.

lemme check though

2:31 PM
It's in the elemental evil book

^

I think the players guide for that adventure is available for free as a pdf

indeed

or just use the dndbeyond.com page for it since it's free: dndbeyond.com/characters/races/aarakocra

@Rob They have a rather specific role in the game. Eg. a Hardholder rolls every session to see whether they gain or suffer from their holding --- or both, but they don't really need to spend much time managing the organization in a "simulator" sense.
On-screen, I mean

2:33 PM
Dangit. I need to get 71 more rep so I can VTC.

@ColinGross Thanks for the dndbeyond tip. Is the info there complete or do I need the elemental evil book to get more use for running the race?

Rob
@kviiri Ah I see, thanks; I'll take a look and see though; otherwise I guess it's cyberpunk styleee :)

I've been a member for 6 years 7 months, I think it's time. :p

@ColinGross hmmm..... Looks like it gives the racial bonuses, etc. It may be all that I need.

@Rob Basically it's a good baseline if you want the organization you're running to serve as a source of challenges and conflicts. If you want an organization you can slap on a more traditional story without derailing it the AW style isn't a good fit.

Rob
2:36 PM
@kviiri (thumbsup) Challenges and conflicts is just what I want :) They make the world go round.

@JohnP what are you trying to vtc?
enworld is a few days late, huh?

@JohnP Should definitely get rep for days of membership because old people are always right /S

Rob
I think I'm about 700 points from ultimate evil, ahem, power.

@Rob Yea :) Just a moment, I'll link you the relevant pdf's for inspirational reading

Whew. Finally worked through all my morning RPG.se question checkups lol
Morning all!

2:50 PM
@Rubiksmoose Now the science can happen? Coffee, rpg.se, work, and in that order

@ColinGross Now the magic can happen. Science is for silly earth-bound losers.

@Rob Check out the playbooks Hardholder, Hocus and Maestro'd in particular from this PDF
The former two have mechanics that use the "roll in the session beginning to resolve what sort of trouble you get during the session, if any". The Maestro'd doesn't roll, but has other kinds of plot hooks that you might find useful to adapt.
There's also the Chopper who instead rolls when imposing their will on their gang

3:09 PM
afk for a while

@BESW Interrogator. Once per scene, when you discover one of someone's personal aspects, you can get a true answer to a direct question about that aspect instead of a free invoke. ?

Science is applied magic

@Derpy Probably a question for Board & Card Games?
@Rob Ooh, go get Reign. Then you can run organizations smacking each other in the face.

3:42 PM
@Glazius oh, right, keep forgetting about the other site, sorry. You are right, far more appropriate there. For some reason I continue to think of this site as "Tabletop Games" instead of "Role Playing Tabletop Games". My bad.

Rob
3:52 PM
@Glazius Thanks for the suggestion - will check it out :)
@kviiri Cheers for the link!

4:31 PM
@Rob No prob :)

4:50 PM
@KorvinStarmast very nice edit on that charop Q. Made it looks like a completely new question! (in a good way!)

5:33 PM
@Rubiksmoose Even the blind squirrel finds an acorn now and again. :)

6:20 PM
what an incredibly quiet day we are having today

speak for yourself

@Rubiksmoose All week has been pretty quiet
I blame the cold, everyone's reptile brains are telling them to hunker down and conserve energy

I've been busy all day, and now my washer's pipes are frozen

@GreySage Good theory. Wish I could instead of driving all over the place to play stuff lol
Well the playing I am excited for.
@goodguy5 oh no!

@Rubiksmoose no, it's not a huge deal just a pain. I have to take a space heater out to the garage and run it under to where the washer pipes live

6:27 PM
@goodguy5 certainly not ideal though.

yea. just dumb problem. I'm not even sure that I could put enough insulation in there to solve it.
|----------|--------|
| house .. laundry|
| . . . . . . |--------|
|_______|garage
yea, that's close enough

@goodguy5 those are some grade-A battle maps right there

hah! Now I can plan my stealthy break-in of goodguy's house.

@MikeQ Now re-draw the map every step to show an orc going from the garage to the living room.

|----------|--------|
| house .. laundry|
| . . . . . . {--------|
|______.. orc with pickaxe breaks wall to get into living room
done

6:49 PM
Playing D&D for 209 hours straight seems like hell to me lol

a little bit

@Rubiksmoose There has to be some sort of asterisk there. Maybe the game continued for 209 hours, but the players and GM(s) swapped out for others.

^
you can't stay awake for 209 hours

@MikeQ It sounds like they can earn breaks (5 min/hour banakable) according to the comments. GWR probably has an endurance definition somewhere but I'm too lazy to look.

so if I have a question that I don't think can be answered by RAW, should I still ask it in RPG.SE or should I take it somewhere else?

6:53 PM
@Rubiksmoose So, every ~100 hours you get 8 hours of sleep. Not worth it.
@G.Moylan Depends on the question, feel free to ask us or ask on Meta if you can ask it.

@G.Moylan we accept many many questions that don't involve rules.

Can I use Wish to gain spell slots beyond 9th level
I know that's a DM thing, but does the lore allow it

Which lore?

with Mystara and all that

@MikeQ ^
Every DM has their own lore is the issue.

6:55 PM
@G.Moylan Is this a 5e question?

Many (such as me) has no idea about previous lore.

is we use the Forgotten Realms lore with Mystara "capping" the weave at 9th level for mortals

You could ask the more general question of whether any official D&D lore suggests the existence of 10th or higher level spell slots

it does though, we already know that

That would probably be better

6:56 PM
there's a whole book on it

@G.Moylan I didn't know that

the Epic Level book from ...... 3.5 i think?

@G.Moylan 3.5 and 5e lore are not the same.

Ah, right. I briefly forgot that 3.5e allowed anything and everything.
Uh... I suppose you could phrase it as "Does any 5e publication suggest the existence of 10th level spell slots". That should cover the general case, while still limiting to 5e. Should be on-topic for the site.

@G.Moylan here's the thing: your question is askable as long as you define the you are talking about, for example, 5e lore. However I can tell you what the answer will be: ask your DM (almost 100% sure). Now, you may learn some things along the way but that is likely going to be the answer.
Because wish, by its very nature, is a "ask your DM" thing

6:58 PM
@MikeQ That would work, and then you already know that the Wish question is down to your DM.

@MikeQ to be fair, I think the original question is on-topic as well, I just don't think it will give particularly interesting answers.

it boils down to DM yeah, and interpretation of whether or not a wish can alter the actions and designs of the god of magic

"Can you use Wish to use game mechanics from other editions of D&D" :p

it seems like that shouldn't be possible, but I suppose itall ends up as DM fiat
lol "I wish... to break the game"

But anyhoo, limiting it to official publications is somewhat well-defined, because the generic "Can I do X" can always be answered by "Ask your DM"

7:01 PM
yeah. I suppose, while askable, it isn't terribly compelling

tbh I'd be interested to know if there's any official 5e material suggesting 10th level slots

@MikeQ Or "Pretty sure recreational use of MDMA is illegal".

@Yuuki Ask your DM

FWIW, 5e does innately support higher level spell slots better than other editions do, what with every other spell having Upcasting rules to permit their power to grow.

@G.Moylan Also, as a sidenote, I'm not sure that trying to wish for this would be advisable in most in-game lores. 10th level slots won't do much without 10th level spells. And all that for risking a war with the god of magic.

7:03 PM
What if I want to improve the save DC on Wish?

If someone comes to me and says "presuppose the existence of 11th level spell slots, how much damage would Fireball deal with those slots", I don't need to conjecture anything: I just point them to the upcasting rules on Fireball and say "16d6".

@Yuuki I mean, yes fair (also another rare slot to cast another 9th level spell is pretty great). But ticking off Mystra worthy? ehhhh

"a living crapload"

@G.Moylan For reference, spell slots are not considered living creatures

OOF

@Rubiksmoose What's she going to do, lose her head?

lol

SNAP incoming!

Oh wait no, Helm didn't decapitate her.

@Xirema That reminds me, which warlock patron is Kyube?

7:10 PM
@MikeQ Great Old Ones, IMO, but like, adorable.

Q: Does the Book of Exalted Deeds allow level 10 spell slots?

PixelMasterThe artifact Book of Exalted Deeds, DMG p. 222, has the following attribute: Enlightened Magic. Once you've read and studied the book, any spell slot you expend to cast a cleric or paladin spell counts as a spell slot of one level higher. Therefore, if a level 17+ cleric were to read t...

@Xirema Hmm, flavor-wise that matches up, but in terms of the archetype's features and spells, I dunno

what about it?

@MikeQ Oh, the mechanical features are a total clash.
TBH, I've been ruminating on a "Familiar Patron" Warlock subclass to make Magical Girls a thing, but that farthest I got was "DEX+CHA+10 for Armor Class while not wearing armor" and stopped thinking about it.
I saw someone actually homebrew a Magical Girl class for 5e, and it's kind of a haphazard mashup of Paladin and Warlock.

add tentacles

7:15 PM
@Xirema I had a Magical Girl prestige class playing my first 3.5e campaign.

@Xirema the permanent Mage Armor invocation can be narrated as a magical girl transformation sequence

@DavidCoffron arg, I actually don't think that is a duplicate.

I could fire non-lethal Magic Missiles.

temptedd to undupe it.

Except it was a single nuke rather than multiple missiles.

7:16 PM
@Xirema So much AC for a caster class..

@GreySage It's comparable to Bladesinger, no?

@GreySage I mean, Hexblades can get pretty high up there as well, what with getting Medium Armor and Shields, so there is precedent.

@Rubiksmoose I argued that point as well

Q: Does a spell cast using a 10th level spell slot count as a 10th level spell?

David CoffronThe Enlightened Magic feature of the Book of Exalted Deeds allows for 10th level spell slots per this question Nothing seems to disallow level 10 spell slots, but would the spells cast with these slots assume level 10? There are two relevant rules as far as I'm aware. The section on Casting a Sp...

This is a specific edge case to the general scenario.

@DavidCoffron ah shucks, I can't VtRO since I already did it once :-/

@Rubiksmoose But I can!

7:23 PM
@GreySage Well I won't tell you how to vote, but feel free to do so if that's the way you feel.
oh nice!

@Rubiksmoose The edge case argument makes sense to me, but it ultimately didn't matter since @DavidCoffron unDupeHammered it.

@Rubiksmoose you have the link to the duplicate meta on questions as part of the other question?

@DavidCoffron I can in a minute :)

Q: If an answer to question A can be found in question B, should we close A as duplicate of B?

enkryptorRelated: Non-duplicate question with answer in another question Should/can we change the Duplicate notification? Situation — there are two different questions Aq and Bq. Question Aq has a specific answer Aa. Question Bq has a good detailed answer, which includes points Aa, Ba and Ca. Should ...

Also, I apologize for not flooding this room with statistics posts today. Spent most of yesterday upgrading my C++ libraries to newer versions so that I could remove some of the preprocessor hacks I was using, so there's not a lot of new stuff to look at. =P

@Rubiksmoose thanks. Don't have time to google-fu at work rn

7:34 PM
@Xirema I am very disappointed

7:52 PM
\crying\
I wrap up with one thing that's taken all day and someone else immediately messages me.

8:04 PM
@goodguy5 :'( No rest for the wicked eh?

sure seems that way

1 hour later…
9:35 PM
@goodguy5 Not even BUDS (seal training) keeps them awake that long during Hell Week.
@doppelgreener I think I have an answer to that - why the heck does anyone bother to create systems for specialised kinds of narratives? - It's the same reason Toyota and Renault and Ford all make cars ... they think theirs will sell better. :)

10:20 PM
is it just me or does this question seem overly broad and subjective in terms of the "how much harder" part:
https://rpg.stackexchange.com/questions/140356/estimating-difficulty-of-continuous-encounters-no-short-rest-waves-of-enemies

@KorvinStarmast well the answer was implicit in the question: they make them because they better support narratives not otherwise well supported by existing systems
but also yes, that is a factor

@G.Moylan I am not going to touch that question with a ten foot pole since DM tecnnique on timing and phasing is very influential on difficulty in the running engagement style of encounters.

it seems like the forst part is obvious: if you can't rechage your abilities, yes it will be hard. but then he asks how to quantify that and I'm not sure you can

@doppelgreener The tone of my chat comment was meant to be somewhat jovial: I saw the star on your input there, and that thought just struck me. Don't want to reopen that discussion, I think it ran its course nicely.

@G.Moylan i've rephrased it to be a bit more objective to ask about process
@KorvinStarmast gotcha, i wasn't sure :)
i mean that's a genuine position some people hold, synonymous with seeing all the systems as being just the same

10:30 PM
yeah that phrasing is much better, albeit still broad. I've added a comment
