8:00 PM
... can't check until tonight.

No worries--it'll be there.

Heh, I just realized that you can't take critical damage from a fall; but it will still hurt ..

Anyone recognize that ^^ artwork?
I feel like it was an ENWorld article and someone'd done a few pages of weapons, but I seem to have only grabbed/saved this one.

@nitsua60 Oriental Adventures maybe
Typeface looks like something it'd have

@nitsua60 looks like OA, but I am not sure which edition. (was there an OA for 3? I seem to remember that, but it's a bit hazy)

8:05 PM
I think there was an OA for 3.5e.

@KorvinStarmast I certainly have the file saved locally as "OAweapons.jpg" =)

But I could be misremembering from when I tried to find stuff for OA on 3.5e for a particular build and ended up pulling stuff from a previous edition.
@nitsua60 I don't think the weight is supposed to be attached to that particular end of the kusari-gama, is it?

@nitsua60 FWIW, the format looks more like WoTC era, not as much TSR era

@KorvinStarmast There was a 3e one

That's not from the 3.5 OA book. The equipment illustrations are B&W in the 3.5 edition

8:11 PM
Ahh!!! I had it bookmarked. From ENWorld: "Do you know your glaive-guisarme from your bohemian earspoon?"
@Yuuki I have no idea. 1e Oriental Adventures is as close as I've ever gotten to authentic East Asian weaponry. That's to say: not close at all.

@Yuuki Yeah, it seems awkward. Hell, my mental images put the chain on the other end of the Chained kama too

@nitsua60 better than being on the sharp/pointy end of East Asian weaponry.

@ColinGross in 3.0 splatbooks maybe. 3.5 books, even the splatbooks, were in color.

@Zachiel The 3.5 book is in color, but the illustrations of the equipment are not.

@nitsua60 Ah that is why. I did a reverse image search on it and all I got were pinterest links with that title lol

8:14 PM
@ColinGross which book are we talking about? OA specifically?

Though it probably makes more sense where it's at in the art. e.g. if it's at the bottom of the handle and someone gets a hold of the other end... them pulling means you have to either let go or potentially get sliced through the hand (and ideally, using your weapon shouldn't give a strong opponent a distinct advantage)

@Rubiksmoose Do -site:pinterest.com

@nitsua60 now bookmarked on the Korvinputer; lovely art and I guess WOIN is the system, not D&D?

@Zachiel That's the one I'm looking at. I think it's actually 3.0 though....

@ColinGross it's 3.0: I clearly remember a 3.5e update of it (I think it was a downloadable file but I'm not 100% sure).

8:16 PM
@Zachiel Dragon magazine.... found that too

Bohemian Ear Spoon, sounds like a nice anniversary present for Shrek from Fiona, to help him with that earwax.

On a sticky note! Wow 3M really makes these things to last.
That image doesn't look like it's from the Dragon Magazine on oriental adventures either.

Could it be from Legend of the Five Rings, or GURPS japan?

Has anyone tried a reverse image lookup

@Delioth Apparently there are some historical kusari-gama with the chain attached to the head of the blade.

8:18 PM
I'm just shooting in the dark

@Zachiel I was thinking one of the PHB from 4th edition?

@MikeQ I have indeed.

I should have been more specific - Has anyone tried reverse image lookup on the thing we're trying to identify? That could help identify it.

@ColinGross I'm just shooting in the dark
@MikeQ heaps of pinterest links.

@MikeQ Sorry yes that is what I meant lol

8:20 PM
Yeah, I guess that's probably the sensible place to use it. So as to avoid the swinging ball being caught (on a horse or a hand or whatever) yanking the sickle out of your hand and attempting to pull the blade through your hand. With it on the head it'll just yank it out of your hand .

@Zachiel do -site:www.pinterest.com
add that to the search criteria

@ColinGross I tried just -site:pinterest but it didn't work, I'll go with the www.

@ColinGross It does not help.
Because then there are esentially 0 results.
There are only 41 hits to begin with.

@Delioth About the only time attaching the weight to the butt end of the handle makes sense is if you're whirling the sickle around like a meteor hammer, I guess.

That's where it's from

8:26 PM
Which paints an inherently hilarious picture, I guess.

@Zachiel The www doesn't matter, that's determined by the site (it isn't actually part of the domain or site name, just part of the url you need to use, in the same way there's rpg.stackexchange.com, and others) do -site:pinterest.* (pinterest has a ton of extra .stuff, like .co.uk, .ca, etc; * is a wildcard)

@Delioth I know, I'm just bad at remebering the tastes of every search I meet ;)

Looks like it's from O.L.D. of the WOIN series of rulebooks.

@Rubiksmoose rpg.stackexchange.com/a/123849/41726 Wait so if I hit INT 30 I can automatically learn every language and tools proficiency?

8:43 PM
30 is deity-level, IIRC, right?

@DavidCoffron That isn't what the answer says. How long needs to be adjudicated via the DM's down time guidance (although IIRC XGTE has some guidelines, and there was a UA a while back ... )

@Yuuki Ah, the ol' giving stats to deities

@SPavel Yeah, fun times.

@KorvinStarmast yes. But if I use those guidelines a +10 modifier makes it 0 workweeks to learn a language
@SPavel some deities
And why shouldn't they have stats?

@DavidCoffron Are they bound by the mechanics of the creatures of the world?

8:45 PM
@DavidCoffron Because those stats are usually bad, and then the PCs will try to kill them

@ColinGross according to established lore for Forgotten Realms (at least one setting) yes.
@SPavel there are stories of gods being killed or captured. Why can't high level PCs try it?

@DavidCoffron I would say it's reasonable to give them stats, then.

@DavidCoffron I mean I guess so lol.

I prefer the "avatar of ____" direction: Deities do not directly influence the tangible world except through avatars, which can be scaled to different levels.
Doombots, in other words

@DavidCoffron Last I checked, the highest char stat is 24, but can't recall where I saw that beyond these two points: the highest/cap I've seen was referred to in the DMG regarding the two Artifact Tomes (can raise up to 24) and the Barbarian "raise to 24" class ability. However, it is open to question regarding how the various books (very rare) that give +2 can be cheesed to get multiple readings (what with the 100 year interval on the book recharging)

8:47 PM
@SPavel I like that.

@SPavel except in some settings they do directly influence the world...

@DavidCoffron It was a doombot.

@DavidCoffron That's where the Athar from Planescape would say "If they bleed like a mortal, and die like a mortal, maybe they're just powerful mortals, not true gods."

@KorvinStarmast I seem to recall this as well. Some question involving an ioun stone

@KorvinStarmast alternative epic boons let's you get more (up to 30)

8:48 PM
If a DM lets PCs get to a high enough level and power, and provides weak stats for Deities, and provides a means of challenging said Deities, they are entirely responsible for any world-breaking results that may come of their campaign.

@ColinGross yes, but didn't Crawford have a comment on that? @DavidCoffron yeah, I didn't see a limit on epic boons in the DMG, so I guess you can take that up to 30.

@KorvinStarmast Yeah PCs can technically reach 30 if they have a ridiculous DM who gives them what they need to do so.

Q: Can I increase an ability score above 30?

David CoffronCan I increase an ability score over 30 with an item such as a Manual of Bodily Health? [After reading] this book... your Constitution score increases by 2, as does your maximum for that score.

Actually, there was an interesting answer on how an Elf could get a 30 ... I'll get a link.

@Rubiksmoose You can almost pull it off in Adventurers League (I can get to 26 I think)

@DavidCoffron Yeah the trick there is that you can only benefit from Tomes once right?

8:49 PM
Maybe 28 depending on reincarnate
@Rubiksmoose yep

@DavidCoffron Depends on whether deities should be beatable. If it has stats it means it's still measurable (i.e. it can fail, and it can succeed): in my settings Deities don't have stats because they're complete masters of their realms/spheres (i.e. they can't fail) and they don't have any influence on other realms/spheres (i.e. they can't succeed). In other settings, there may be more of a gray area that requires stats

@KorvinStarmast Yeah, that turns out to be the thing. (Whatever WOIN is....)

@Rubiksmoose do we have a question on reincarnate retroactively changing ability scores to be higher than 20? Can't remember if I asked

If I have one tome and a [friendly] Gynosphinx I can reach 30 no problem (Time travel time)

8:54 PM
@David Hmm, Barbarian already has 20 Str, gets to level 20, gets 24 Str, then reads the book. AL legal 26 strength, right?

@KorvinStarmast yep

I guess Con would be the same for the barb in that regard.

Agh, didn't flag in time
To be fair, it's not the worst backstory for a magic item
Imagine some kind of Egyptian jeweler down on his luck so he summons a demon or whatever and makes a ring that lets him win at gambling, and then over time his descendants tweak and improve it
Certainly better than the tired "you found a super cool magic sword, knowledge of how to make it has been lost" spiel

@SPavel I did catch that one, I was proud.

9:00 PM
Or - imagine that this is the One Ring
The person's only desire is to flog it for cheap cash
So it's granted them ultimate spam powers

Get outta here spam, this isn't the world of Sonic

@SPavel I would watch a movie based on that

> Summon a genie and wish for a magic ring
> Every time you shake hands with someone, you hear the melodic sound of chimes

Note to self, have magic shop in fantasy world that has adverts in the style of spam.

TRUSTED POWERFUL RINGS, GUARANTEED TO HELP YOU DEAL WITH DRAGONS, LICHES, AND DEMIGODS! GREAT VALUE!

@Maximillian Enlarge the size of your codpiece

9:01 PM
@Maximillian Do I get to flag advertisments for wands of stone to flesh as "it is spam"?

@Maximillian Drink this ONE potion they don't want you to know about!

The Secrets of the Conclave can be YOURS!

Imported designer armor in all the latest fashions at 85% off!

@Maximillian If you make it short enough they can stand in the market place and spam message at everyone in sight range.

@Maximillian uses psychic broadcast magic to inform people all around.

9:02 PM
This sounds like something the Gnomes would cook up.

85% off armor... what kind of AC effect does that have?

not generally recommended because eventually you contact an illithid.

@Maximillian 50% off this sword that can take 50% off of you enemies' bodies

A housebeing has created this method to slay goblinoids! Hobgoblins hate her!

@doppelgreener DO NOT CALL [spammer's INT reduced to 1]

9:03 PM
Illithids are actually the ones doing the data mining from the magical message spam.

@nitsua60 depends on the sexuality of the attacker

WACKY WAVING INFLATABLE PARTY MEMBERS!
Hello sir, I am an esteemed elven prince, and I need to transfer gold to your kingdom. There is a 10% reward for your assistance in this quest!

@Maximillian This would actually be a pretty hilarious quest hook.

You won an ALL EXPENSES PAID trip to the Feywild! See BEAUTIFUL mountains and AMAZING glades! Get lost in the magic of the native wildlife! Just leave your castle's title information in a scroll at this location and we'll bring the portal to you!

@DavidCoffron That's it. I've got to do a campaign where one of the major set pieces is a dwarven mountainhome whose slightly-senile King took up a traveller's "deal" that's exactly that... and so there's a bunch of pissy dwarves in the feywild. Maybe some nearby kingdom is wondering why steel shipments stopped (or the players are dwarves pissy about the feywild trying to get back)

9:14 PM
Fantasy MLMs?

@Yuuki just find someone to sell these bushels of hay on your behalf and make 1 silver for every 3rd they get.
Dominate person would work fine

@Yuuki for feeding a hungry county, we have a Spamway distributorship looking for a motivated salesgnome ...

@Yuuki They've already got actual mindflayers, we probably don't need to find them mundane mindflayers too

I'm telling you, Mindflayers are just data miners.
I can think of a worse for the above. The Dwarves are scammed into trips to NEW Feywyld. Which is just a few druids that enchanted a small tree grove.

@Maximillian "If you wish to opt out of our new ToS, please travel to the Underdark within 30 days and remove all headware."

9:49 PM
While in the Underdark, please consider examining one of our many discount tourist packages. GREAT VALUE!
We used to have bed and breakfast packages but now it's bed and all consuming darkness.

@kviiri I keep saying Kiitos.

1 hour later…
10:57 PM
hey there @Maximillian

11:24 PM
When do you gain your first level, becoming Lv 1? I mean, your character.

@Piomicron what system? what's the context there?

@doppelgreener Sorry, dnd 5e

you start the game at level 1 already, but are you imagining like, at what stage in someone's life they actually acquired that level?

Yeah

good question

11:26 PM
@Piomicron -- that's really up to you and your char's backstory

@Piomicron Part of your background, there aren't any rules for it.

Are there even starting ages in 5e?

@Piomicron I don't believe so
I think there's some guidance as to when various humanoids reach adulthood

I feel like having or gaining a level in a class isn't the best thing to explore in a purely narrative context

11:37 PM
@trogdor For like a Fighter or something, it doesn't seem to matter. But what about a Wild Mage? Were they casting fireballs and stuff by mistake while trying to do minor illusions at 6?

Not that it can't be done or anything, but calling the level out instead of just looking at the character background,.....
@Piomicron isn't it more interesting to ask why they can do that than "when did they get this wild mage level?"

@trogdor Generally, yes. But there are applications if you know when you get the level. If little Timmy wants to be a wizard but has 12 intelligence, it suddenly becomes applicable when there's a transition

But, just to give a counterpoint to my own oppinion given so far, have you ever read Rich Bulew's Order of the Stick?
It OOTS for short

Yeah, I have
It's awesome

Mk
I bring it up because he brings leveling up into the narrative
And I do enjoy it

11:44 PM
Yeah, RPG-mechanics verses are surprisingly enjoyable

I mention it especially because if a conversation between Varsuvious (probably misspelled) and Elan that sort of hits what we are talking about

This is what happens when someone fixes an 8-year-old typo.

When Elan breifly wants a wizard level

And he brings up that V could have become a Bard when he was like 18?
Instead of studying for centuries?

11:52 PM
Yes
But it's also about how Elan would be skipping a lot of work
Though that is all part of the same conversation
