I really dislike "What to do?" on the end
@goodguy5 that is a point yeah :/
@goodguy5 Why? Honest question
@Helwar What to do is arbitrary, to which things like "leave and migrate to Turkmenistan" is theoretically an answer (although an absolutely silly one that would be removed). What to do so as to obtain a specific goal is more specific. Sans the specific goal we imply something like "make the group function effectively and not be weird like this", which is probably good enough and what they want.
@doppelgreener Do you think it might be good to clean up the comments a smidge? there are a bunch talking about the duplicate and a couple talking about things that have since been clarified.
@Baskakov_Dmitriy I agree. Good Subjective says we should look for answers that cite comparable experience of how a particular solution works out in practice, which means best case we want an answer that says "we had a group of teenagers doing this and we did this to resolve it and here's how it worked out in practice."
where the experience can be one's own they can describe, or someone else's in a form they can provide a reference to (like a blog post).
14:06
@Baskakov_Dmitriy I read that as "a psychopath and also a D&D player" and didn't even question it
@doppelgreener Thanks! :) I sometimes used the "what to do?" or "how to procede?" at the end of the question but try to clarify it before, that's why I didn't think of it as a bad practice. I will be careful with that in the future then :)
@Rubiksmoose I have cleaned up the comments a smidge, where "a smidge" here turns out to mean "with a flamethrower". Only two stuck around, wow.
I have translated this to my psychologist friend who is also a D&D player/GM. She doesn't speak English, so if she gets an answer for this, I will have to translate it to English. She is unlikely to make an account, as she cannot really use the site because of her lack of English language skills, so is it OK for me to post this answer then?
@Helwar I think you would have to try really hard to be too clear or too specific with your wording.
@Helwar It's sometimes workable to just ask "what do I do?", but it helps if it's "how do I achieve this specific outcome?". It helps us know what you want to get out of the situation exactly and helps make answers more laser-focused on that outcome.
14:09
@Baskakov_Dmitriy If people can cite Crawford tweets, you can cite your friend :P
Yeah I understand what you mean, it's logic once you say it :)
@Baskakov_Dmitriy Yes.
@doppelgreener woohoo! burn baby burn.
@Rubiksmoose Burning babies conventionally shifts your alignment towards Evil
But in light of @kviiri's alignment grid, it may instead affect your Yaw
Hey, got a question to which I probably already know the answer. I have a ton of old lead figures, including some of the multi part dragon scene kits. Is fleabay about the best route to sell them? Or are there other avenues around?
14:13
@JohnP Craigslist
@SPavel I think my SE alignment could probably be classified as Lawful Evil then.
lol
@Rubiksmoose You burn babies, consistently?
@SPavel Only comment babies. And only when they deserve it. :)
This is a Sarcastic Fringehead. You’d think that the actual creature couldn’t possibly live up to such a spectacular name. Oh it does. 😬 https://t.co/ozomBYglgZ
@SPavel Heh. That's how I picked them up in the first place! :p
14:15
@JohnP Ashes to ashes
@Baskakov_Dmitriy in the US 8th graders are 13-14 years old.
More thorough guidance on that point:
- You can collaborate on your own answers with other people, including more or less just posting on their behalf.
- Please do make it clear you're speaking on behalf of a psychologist and D&D player. That's an awesome credible source.
- It would be good to make it clear where you're speaking on their behalf, and where you're speaking for yourself. (This might just mean "this whole answer is hers. Here's some further notes by me.) It's up to you whether you want to quote her translated, or just write it as normal prose without a quote block. It's fine if
@Rubiksmoose The real pro move is to time your kid's birth so that they are maximum age to start school (birthday is 1 day after the school year starts). Having 1 extra year of development on everyone else will ensure that your child crushes it.
@SPavel Gotta give your child every agevantage that you can ;)
@SPavel also, teach your child to leverage all advantages available to absolutely crush and destroy their peers, even when there's not a competition. it will prepare them for D&D. where they can crush and destroy their fellow players' characters, even when there's not a competition. [/terrible parenting advice do not follow]
14:21
@Rubiksmoose Note that power armor is typically frowned upon in adolescent phys ed classes
@doppelgreener >when there is not a competition
what do you mean
Thanks! It would actually still make sense to know the exact set-up. IMO, it is different if a group consists of three 13-year-old guys and one 15-year-old girl, or if one guy is a 13-year-old and the rest, e.g. 3 more guys and the girl, are 15-year-olds, etc.
life is a competition, so you should not make your child so powerful that you cannot control him
(him, because being a woman is a disadvantage in modern society, so it's more optimal to have a son)
(also if you are not English-speaking Caucasian, see what you can do about that)
@Baskakov_Dmitriy absolutely. I was just giving some immediate guess info in case it helped getting your answer ready. Technically our 8th grader should be attending classes right now which may be the cause for the radio silence.
(at least in 2/3 of the US)
@SPavel I'll just make my future imaginary child into a doppelganger so they always fit in! No way this can go wrong!
@SPavel i don't know, it's just something i've heard is possible.
@Rubiksmoose No, changing for others is a sign of weakness
You should make your child a wizard so he can change others into himself
14:26
@SPavel This is something I actually had to consider for my superhero campaign lol. So, can confirm, that even in my bubble universe of Halcyon City this is still frowned upon. (sucks to be you people whose powers depend on mechanical things).
@doppelgreener You must have heard it from communists or hippies
@Rubiksmoose If your powers depend on mechanical things, you should have implanted them into your body a long time ago, or better yet, implanted your brain inside a cyborg body
There's no better team-up than a hormone-fueled teenage brain, and a nuclear-capable autonomous weapons platform
@SPavel These are teenagers. Brain transplants are at least a precollege transformation thing. lol
@SPavel That almost describes the state of US politics right now...
@Rubiksmoose Indeed, but we got a response from 3 minutes ago... rpg.stackexchange.com/questions/122539/…
@Rubiksmoose Little Rocket Man, PL10 supervillain
@Baskakov_Dmitriy Smartphones are a wonderful thing eh?
@Baskakov_Dmitriy Also added twist that DM's hormones are also raging. It is honestly really good that OP is seeing this as an issue not only in the group but in themselves.
signs of a good DM looking out for the group IMO.
14:36
Raging hormones: Your character has disadvantage on all rolls as self-consciousness consumes him
@Rubiksmoose Yes, have also noticed that.
> Rocket Man: Your character automatically succeeds on all checks related to igniting fuses when alone.
@Yuuki XD
@Yuuki hey hey this is a family friendly chat
... I don't know what you guys are thinking, but I was referencing this:
14:52
@Yuuki I think he was jokingly interpreting "igniting fuses while alone" as a humorous euphemism for certain activities.
Listening to "Rocket Man" and "Starman" again, I noticed that '70s/'80s music had this weird habit of ending with constant repetition and fading off into the distance.
@Yuuki on another note I think you did a great job grabbing that from the song lol I recognized the line right away.
@Yuuki I always kind of disliked this.
@Rubiksmoose It's especially noticeable with Clapton's Layla which for all intense porpoises ends like 3 minutes before it actually does.
For the remaining 3 minutes, it's just mellow guitar.
And it's like the same three or four bars repeated. For three minutes.
@Yuuki Yup. I always skip to next song way before 3 minutes of that.
Some really really good songs do it too. Including that one.
@Yuuki I've noticed that, too.
@Yuuki ouch
is it these four bars?
:)
15:14
Having taken music theory, it's really hard to write anything that's not I-IV-V, has satisfying resolution, and has separate parts that sound good alone.
Granted, I only took music theory for one year but that's beside the point.
I am beyond tempted to comment "maybe we found love right where we are" on this question.
I don't get it
> I'm thinking out loud / That maybe we found love right where we are
@doppelgreener Part of my answer to the teenagers is along the lines of the Serenity prayer: grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change; courage to change the things I can; and wisdom to know the difference Trying to shoehorn two of the adult cases where guy/gal drama occurred ... hmmm ... that needs pondering
@Yuuki I didn't know Excel played music
right, but there's a difference when that's coming from a voice of experience compared to when that's coming from no apparent experience
15:23
@KorvinStarmast reading over your girl-problems answer.

"Create friction you don't want"

But the whole problem is that they WANT to create friction!!!
@SPavel It is in fact very good at it. You could say that it's excellent.
@goodguy5 While that's a bit humorous, I don't think I can advocate such things.
Like for any given situation: "There's not much you can do. You'll have to accept it. You can manage it, here's how." -- that advice sounds majorly different depending on whether the person has been there & done that vs not.
because if they haven't been there and done that, all bets are off that the advice is any good.
since you appear to have at least somewhat been there and done that, discussing your being there & having done that will be really important & valuable.
@KorvinStarmast I certainly got a chuckle
@doppelgreener Yeah, I agree that a little more meat on that bone would be good. I'll let that set for a bit and come back .... I need to be sensitive to the context; teenagers and adults seem to have a different level of social agility ... and the power dynamics are swingy as hell.
15:26
cool
I am hoping that people who began to play as 11 and 12 year olds may be able to chime in. I was a junior in high school before I started ... and it was not until I was on college that I was in coed groups.
Somewhat different contexts.
comparable experience is much better than not citing any though
Yeah ... that's true
everyone should just watch Stranger Things season 1
The answers are all there
@goodguy5 Do we have to watch it in reverse or while listening to Dark Side of the Moon?
15:31
@Rubiksmoose both
but dark side should also be played in reverse
@goodguy5 Sounds like some alcohol is also probably a necessary component to this as well then lol
um.... they're teenagers. they can't have alcohol
be a role model, for crying out loud
@goodguy5 Urban legend: if you play Dark Side of the Moon in reverse, it tells you how to DM for a group of 13-year-olds
@KorvinStarmast part of the equation is also that you as a well-established user help to set the example for other users who are figuring out how the site works. ensuring your posts embody good quality standards is valuable guidance.
@goodguy5 i agree with this regardless of whatever context this is in
friends. a girl gets introduced. power dynamics. D&D
it's all there
15:35
@doppelgreener I disagree, I found it not very engaging
Then you were watching a different show (imo)
I guess you have to have internalized 80s flyover state culture to 'get it'
@SPavel Well yeah, they're kids. Nobody's getting married for at least another five years minimum.
ha!
ha!. ba dum tiss
@SPavel fair enough :)
(but you did watch it 8D)
15:36
@Yuuki beautiful.
@doppelgreener I watched the first episode and it was not that great
Ok, no problem
... technically counts
I always try to go for 3 episodes before pronouncing final judgement on something. But that is a lot easier with 20 minute anime than 1+ hour shows.
Cyborg Strahd, Technical Count
@Rubiksmoose Rurouni Kenshin?
15:38
@SPavel A friend of mine enjoyed that show because of the major nostalgia factor they experienced. (And it's part of a bunch of nostalgia-driven 80's shows depicting a past that never actually existed.) Another enjoyed stories like this because the life lead by the characters was wholly unlike their own, because they didn't grow up in a culture like that at all. I just enjoyed the story. 8)
@Rubiksmoose Too many shows think they can get away with a bad first half-season
Ironically, the first half season of Korra was probably the best part of it
I'm a 90's kid, so nothing on there is quite how my childhood went.
@goodguy5 Many anime have fallen to the 3 episode rule. Though I never watched RK.
I am that generation that experienced pre-internet for just a few years before the internet happened.
@Rubiksmoose one of my favorites.
15:39
@SPavel Conversely, too many shows think they can get away with a good first half-season.
Even got my wife to watch it. She liked it so much, she made me order the Manga.

She's never read a Manga before in her life.
@doppelgreener Nor mine. Being the child of a pastor in the 90s lets just say D&D was not something that was on the table (heh).
I've gotten into Re:Zero lately
@Rubiksmoose ooer. yeah, understandable.
@SPavel is that a thing or are you saying you haven't gotten into anything?
15:40
@goodguy5 Oh neat. I know it is a classic. Maybe I'll have to add it to my backlog once I'm out of superhero research mode.
Ugh, even though I realize that they had real concerns and problems, part of me will never forgive the Writers' Strike for killing Heroes so thoroughly.
The protagonist is annoying but I like that they treat the premise seriously
@Yuuki hey but it gave us Doctor Horrible's Sing-Along Blog. So that is something.
@Rubiksmoose Yeah, but imagine if Heroes went on for more than one season...
@goodguy5 It's an anime about a guy who gets sucked into a parallel fantasy world, is immediately mugged, and every time he dies, he appears in the same alleyway and gets mugged again
15:41
@SPavel that sounds awful
for him
@SPavel To be honest, I'm extremely tired of that genre/premise.
@Yuuki They do it well, the "alternate world" thing is just used as an excuse for him not knowing anything about the world
@Yuuki you're tired of it, imagine how the character feels
@goodguy5 It is pretty awful, dying is typically very painful
Which the show does not gloss over
These days, any summary that includes "into another world" or some permutation of that automatically turns me off.
15:42
more markov generators.

also I liked yu yu hakisho... though I'm pretty sure it's not a good show
@SPavel Let me guess, the main character is some sort of shut-in gamer type, and their knowledge of gaming tropes becomes relevant in the alternate world
@Yuuki If it helps, other than this curse, the character has no special powers or abilities
@MikeQ No, his knowledge of gaming tropes immediately gets him killed
@MikeQ Or someone with inexplicably detailed knowledge of chemistry, physics, and general applied sciences.
glares at literally the entire isekai genre
@goodguy5 YYH survived the 3 episode rule but not enough to get me all the way through it. Hunter x Hunter though was sooo good.
Despite being billed as a NEET, the main character is relatively socially adept, keeps an exercise routine, and has a moral compass
15:44
alright, I need to get some work done
@Rubiksmoose HxH was good until the ants
@SPavel I definitely agree.
And so has everybody else I've introduced to the show.
@SPavel So they gave him a label to appeal to certain audiences despite emphatically not fitting that label at all?
@Yuuki Seems that way
Although the show does demonstrate that he has no marketable skills whatsoever
I blame SAO for all of this.
15:46
@Yuuki I think that is fair.
Re:Zero is way better than SAO
That's not my point, I'm saying that SAO is to blame for this genre surge.
For one, the female lead is typically the one that solves problems, the male lead's main contributions are calling for help & stalling
@SPavel That's not saying much. Dog breath is better than SAO.
The macaroni art I made in kindergarten was better than SAO.
It definitely had better character arcs.
15:48
Though, full disclosure, I watched SAO until the end of the GGO arc
The "in-game and out-of-game villains team up" bit was actually decently entertaining IMO
But after they stopped that guy, there is no more tension and it becomes "show about a guy who is very good at MMOs, and his girlfriend who exists to be rescued"
One of my weirdest nit-picks with SAO is the idea that it was described as one of the biggest game releases in history, reaching such incredibly high day one sales numbers of... 100,000.
:/
@Yuuki That's pretty high for a game that requires bonkers expensive borderline experimental hardware
Despite the advanced technology, I'm not certain that was bonkers expensive.
@doppelgreener yeah;
For one, almost no console in the past decade sells at a profit. They're always sold at a loss.
15:55
@Yuuki Ask Sega about how well launching with 1 game works
@SPavel The Dreamcast's launch line-up looks about the same in acclaim as the Xbox 360's.
Dreamcast was ahead of its time
some of my favorite games
Namely, Armada and PowerStone 2
@Yuuki Yes, but Microsoft has infinite money
Incidentally, I have no clue how threat management works in SAO. I guess it's D&D-like in that there's no threat system and the monsters target whomever?
@Yuuki I think the game is supposed to have sophisticated enough AI that this is the case
16:04
@Yuuki The monsters target whomever the protagonist needs to save, because by rescuing incompetent people, he makes up for the lack of a personality
Faction-only classes is also dumb (see WoW's first expansion immediately making the faction-locked paladin and shaman classes available to the other side).
It's hard enough to balance classes against each other without having to account for factions.
Ooh, Campaign Cartographer made the Bundle of Holding. That's tempting.... (I've been meaning to look into it for a year or so.)
As a Paladin, what methods excluding multi-classing could I use to acquire Healing Word?
@Yuuki Magic Initiate Feat?
16:16
2 cantrips + 1 1st level spell (castable once/long rest)
@doppelgreener Having to make "family friendly" my update was necessary ...
@doppelgreener Added one success story in dealing with at the table flirting ...
I don't want to drag in the tales of disaster ...
@KorvinStarmast no need to speak to all of your experience, or to be detailed about everything that did happen, of course. (but situations where something hasn't worked out is also valuable, because it's a learning opportunity.)
i haven't read the update yet, that's without context of having read it ^
@doppelgreener I am trying not to harsh our young gamer's groove. :) I want the tone of the answer to be positive.
16:34
@doppelgreener Mission Accomplished, question stays open, and how has two answers.
16:47
Some great class names
@SPavel "Peter Y Liu"? I thought only one person could be the governor?
@Yuuki wot
"Y" is Spanish for "and".
"Peter Y Liu" would translate to "Peter And Liu".
@Yuuki It would not be capitalized
I've seen it capitalized before.
17:06
@SPavel In a normal sentence you are correct, but many documents do not use regular sentence structure and capitalization.
I've seen things you people wouldn't believe. Attack ships on fire off the shoulder of Orion. Y capitalized in the middle of a sentence. I watched C-beams glitter in the dark near the Tannhäuser Gate. All those moments will be lost in time, like tears in rain. Time to die.
it's a person and their symbiote.
Like Jadzea Dax
or Kurzon Dax
(sp? on both)
17:51
@Rubiksmoose Let's avoid further comment discussion. Can you explain here? I'll just delete the comment anyway
@Sdjz Nope I just understood what you said and agree.
Comment deleted. Thanks for pointing it out.
@Rubiksmoose ah ok, let's cleanup everything to avoid confusion
way ahead of me I see :)
@Sdjz hiding my shameful lack of reading comprehension lol
Only the mods can see my shame now!
Your comments are running from the battlefield! A shamefur dispray!
@Sdjz Guessing they meant to say attunement slots.
18:00
@Rubiksmoose Hm yes I suppose that does make sense
Not entirely certain why that is especially relevant here but there you have it.
@Rubiksmoose You were right
It was bound to happen sometime.
18:27
@SPavel amazing
"I roll to find out if the bear is actually a dog"
d6
I mean, uh, the dog is a bear
d6
Is 3 "success with complications"
And the complication is that it takes 2 years
Nah it needs opposition to see if it happens
18:33
d6
Ooh, a tie
simply change the conditions of the test
18:35
The thing didn't happen then. I guess that dog is just an ordinary dog.
... for now
This is probably the worst advice I have ever seen in an SE answer.
"Teenagers, curious what the right thing to do is? Just listen to your body!"
2
queue that space guy meme "Aliens"
but instead "Babies"
also: "be with a woman"
@goodguy5 Babies! So many babies! FOUR HUNDRED BABIES
at best, she's a "girl"
hahaha
I was just telling someone about that recently
@SPavel KENYANS
18:47
@Yuuki AAAAAAAAA
huh....
Wow, linked question has 100 upvotes
that psychopath guy
@goodguy5 Which?

Q: My party member is displaying disturbing behavior, what do I do?

Hobo_warriorAs the DM, I am becoming more and more deeply disturbed with one of our party members. Here’s a list of things he keeps doing. attacking party members tried to rape a widow (asked if he needed to role dexterity) murders animals in cruel ways seeks out prostitues chooses to have his character ma...

18:50
Um, ok
I feel like at a certain point, there is nothing more the Stack can do
I also feel like this guy needs better friends
@goodguy5 that's messed up.
I'm legitimately concerned
@Rubiksmoose I barely managed to read that answer before it got deleted
@Rubiksmoose
gril != girl
18:52
@GreySage It's not like you would have missed much
@SPavel It was pretty entertaining
I note that the hedgehog defense was rapidly deployed.
In Laconic, the RPG, that poster would have been penalized for every word in his answer beyond two, because he could have just said "get laid" and it would have covered his answer in its entirety
should we invite hobo here?
@goodguy5 says who?!
18:54
maybe this is a better series of questions for [chat]
@Rubiksmoose no, he tried both — Hobo_warrior 57 secs ago
THIS
and a counselor
@Rubiksmoose h o l y c a n n o l i
@goodguy5 I think "Get better friends" would be some seriously good advice for this guy
on the bright side, it seems like the "there's a girl in the group and it's messing things up" will be solved if this guy is around... as she won't come back, or ever try gaming again
18:56
Although it sounds like the trouble-making player is more a teenaged jerk than psychopath
@GreySage the line is thin
@GreySage Sexual assault goes beyond teenaged jerk
Or maybe someone is doing a great job trolling? We'll see.
@SPavel +1000
I'm very curious if this behavior started when the girl joined
and the guy is trying to make the girl leave by being a cretin
18:57
@goodguy5 That would be useful to know
I am curious as to any of this is actually happening IRL ...
I have nothing better to do than assume it is.
@KorvinStarmast From OP's comment the groping was
@goodguy5 Are you not at work
@KorvinStarmast Or are you doubting OP's account? (honest question not trying to cast aspersions)
18:58
wait, do you mean "happening IRL"
as in "this is real and not a troll"

or as in "over the internet andor in character"
@SPavel am indeed
again though, is this a conversation to have in chat?
@goodguy5 @Rubiksmoose Step back a second, and look at this from a wider angle. Watch the time tags on the first post, and then the next two questions in quick succession. My troll alarms are beginning to sound (and I of course may be a cynical old fart ...)
@KorvinStarmast OK I was just checking what you were saying.
Let's just say that I smell a rat. It's OK if I am wrong.
@KorvinStarmast I'll check on this. Please assume it's an honest user for the moment.
