4:00 AM
@BESW you've got a point, I didn't see it that way. I constructed my character from the information we were given, but maybe I just took him the wrong way in what he wanted.
The problem I have with that is it's only really the personality of my character thats getting changes, all the stats and stuff have stayed the same. Her background hasn't even changed, really, just the way she approched it

Yeah, that definitely sounds like a tonal mismatch.

(so instead of being disinterested death, she reveals in it, instead of hating the poor she mocks them)

@Asteria Let me play devil's advocate: Maybe the GM doesn't realize that they've changed your character's personality, and was merely trying to edit so that your character would better fit the campaign lore.

Sounds like you're eager to engage with heavy themes and explore broken characters while the GM is looking more for a dark comedy romp.

Did the GM indicate why they made those particular changes?

4:02 AM
@Asteria yeah, it may be best to shelve Jensai then for another run at Blades with some other folks and start engaging the GM more explicitly on the desired tone of the game before making another char

@Asteria That's why my first move would be to bring this up to the DM (despite the pre-response reaction of wanting to immediately get upset)

@MikeQ they did not

@MikeQ also maybe true. and to answer your question, yes, I did ask him, but got no explination

Oooooooooooooooooooooooohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh
No explanation to a question changes things a bit
(at least IMO)

@Asteria Then be pushy. "I want my character to have this personality. Is it okay if they have X, Y, Z?"
In other words, say "I am going to be this character" and give them the opportunity to object.

4:04 AM
^^Ehh... @MikeQ I wouldn't seek conflict right off the bat

@BESW I don't think thats it, in terms of "dark comedy". I went for a really dark character because the story we were given was dark. (Thrown in prison for a crime that wasn't your fault, tortured, finally released after 5 years, PC's band together to plot revenge)

Not necessarily a conflict, I meant moreso stating that the character's personality is important

Ah, kk
Wording mismatch

It's definitely possible I've gotten the wrong tone from him though

@Asteria Idk
I think our instincts are still right about him just being a bit flippant

4:06 AM
When coming into a conversation like this, it's best to assume that the other person knows something you don't which makes their actions make sense.

@BESW True

@BESW Yes. But I'm naturally cynical about people more often than not, so usually my assumption of what they know isn't on the upside :P

But coming from the other perspective, it's possible (if not common) for players to throw together a concept and not care too much, and for the GM to fill in the details

That keeps them from getting their guard up and becoming defensive, and it keeps you from getting defensive about Being Right, so nobody gets backed into a corner where they have to lose face.

that said, @BESW is right

4:07 AM
Asking someone to help you understand what they're doing, rather than asking them to justify it, is a subtle but significant difference in approach.

welp, it gives me a leg to stand on, so I'll message him and see what we can work out. I'll also message my partner to see if his character got edited too

@BESW Bah, peaceful conflict resolution skills are overrated. It's best to resolve conflicts by rolling polyhedral dice and to see who has the best numbers.

@MikeQ But what if the dice are weighted??? :O

The GM may think that it's absolutely obvious why they made those changes and you're just being a jerk, or they may not have thought about it very hard. Either way, asking for help will create a space for reflection.

@MikeQ I roll terribly, so I'd instantly lose all the time

4:09 AM
d20

Uh oh. Looks like I'm wrong about something.

d20

SEE

4:10 AM
[snerk]

brb sobbing in corner

D20

Hah I winz

@trogdor is offically right about everything always. All hail

4:12 AM
Lol

@Asteria No, a 10 is an average. So @trogdor is right about 50% of things, on average.

quick someone roll a 20 and declare all icecream as free

d20

@BESW welcome to the almost always wrong club

4:14 AM
All ice cream is free... but it's all off-brand cherry garcia.

ick

@MikeQ ate you sure higher than 10 exists right now? :P

d20

@trogdor Unsure. Let me roll to find out.
d20

4:14 AM
10

All icecream is free.

@trogdor I am 50% sure.

(Look: I just opened your freezer. Run away, little icecreams!)

@nitsua60 I'll get you gadget

Woo! All hail @nitsua60 , the new lord of right
wait no

4:15 AM
just for thrills...
d20

@Asteria The roll was bound to happen. I just destroyed a half-dozen users, so my mod-hammer was hot =)

Ah, yes.
3 is my nemesis

It would have been beautiful if @nitsua60 had rolled a 10 too

hey there @nitsua60

4:16 AM
I've roll 2,321 3s in the past two weeks
(the high number is from a campaign with leadership feats)

@Shalvenay hiya

@Asteria I would have paid tickets for that

@nitsua60 btw, I not only earned my first gold tag badge ever a little while back, but I also goldhammered a post dupe-closed recently even :)

Well, time for me to head out
Glad I found this place...I'll be back tomorrow

Anyway @Asteria, I think @BESW put it best: It's possible that the GM thinks their edits were justified/helpful, and they don't realize that they've annoyed you. It may be too soon to assume that they're trying to take away your volition.

4:18 AM
@Alphaeus See you round!

@Alphaeus ttfn

@Shalvenay Nice. Just in time for hatmas =)

@Alphaeus miss you already

Robida is the essential steampunk-before-steampunk person, amazing stuff https://ansionnachfionn.com/2017/10/03/le-vingtieme-siecle-la-vie-electrique-by-albert-robida/
Found the druid!
''25 GREEN'' .. A HOUSE AMONG TREES - Torino, Italy by Luciano Pia

@BESW Is the druid polymorphed as one of those houseplants?

4:28 AM
Only to avoid door-to-door salespeople.

Wow that's gorgeous
The GM is being super, duper, infuriatingly, maddeningly unhelpful

@Asteria Uh oh. What happened now?

@MikeQ I can't get more then 3 or 4 words out of him at a time, bleh.
I'm not a people person, dang it shakes fist

"Is this a bad time? Maybe we can schedule a chat about this later."

@BESW imgur.com/a/ArvIW permission to give up and cry, captain?

4:37 AM
^^ and maybe something like "I want to make sure I understand your expectations for these games"

@BESW Permission to cry accepted. Salutes

@Asteria BURNINATE
BURNINATE

@trogdor your perfect timing makes me thinks you have a BURNINATE sensor

@Asteria I keep exiting the room on my phone and coming back when I read something I want to respond to

4:40 AM
Boring... how? It was the character that you wanted to play. You (@Asteria) would be the one RP'ing it, and you wouldn't find it boring.

Cause I can't log on on the work comp

> Some dragons just want to watch the world... you know. Whenever something is on fire, or obviously should be on fire, you can spend a fate point to enter the scene.
2

@trogdor LIES. You have a BURNINATE sensor.

@Asteria it sounds like they are expecting their players to just know the tone expectations of the game instead of communicating them

^^

4:41 AM

@Asteria code red code red we have a spy in our midst

Yeah, you could follow up with something like... "Maybe I don't understand the tone you are expecting. Should I play something more light-hearted?"

@Asteria it may be best to create a "tabula rasa" character and develop them in play with this group in order to learn what their tone expectations are

@Shalvenay Somehow I don't get the impression this GM would appreciate the tabula rasa approach to character creation.

I think it broke @BESW

4:42 AM
But hey, worth asking?

What's Taabula rasa? @Shalvenay

@BESW yeah, definitely worth asking about as well
@Asteria "blank slate" -- i.e. create a character with expectations that the personality will be filled in as you play through the game instead of strongly developing the character upfront through their backstory

@Asteria Blank slate. Basically, come to the table with minimal character concept (e.g. "I am sword guy. I am a guy with a sword.") and then develop flavor as the game progresses.

Extreme tabula rasa starts with a mostly-empty character sheet and you also choose your mechanics on the fly as you need them.
Kinda like playing Roll For Shoes without the shoes.

That fix upsets me though

4:45 AM
@MikeQ @Shalvenay I can ask but it might be tricky. The backstorys are given to the player who's going to "contact" all the other PC's to get them to join the gang, by doing things like "Oh I know about that kid from highschool that said your ugly I can help you stabbu him"

It makes sure that your choices will definitely be relephant to the game, because you chose them at the point when you needed them for the game during play.

If I had already made a character for the game and was proud of that character, going back and doing a blank slate after to fix a problem the GM created for me would *****************

If I tabula wabula all over the place, I won't have a backstory to be lured in by

Trogdor .exe has stopped working

Urrrgh. I've been that GM and it's a nightmare.
So much easier to just ask the players to tell me why their characters are interested in [thing the game's about].
(In my world, "good GMing" is almost indistinguishable from "lazy GMing." Get the players to do a lot of the heavy lifting!)

4:48 AM
@trogdor would you like to end this application?

Please keep us updated on this conversation @Asteria
Seeing the handiwork of bad GMs makes me feel better about my otherwise mediocre GM skills

@BESW you think thats a nightmare? Every PC has a different revenge target

@Asteria Well, no, that's fine. Make it an episodic adventure where each mission is the whole team helping one PC with their target.

hey there @Zyerah

Gives a nice clear structure to the whole enterprise.

4:50 AM
@BESW I hope it plays out that smoothly. I have a feeling it won't, but I hope

@Asteria Would you like a sign, just in case?

I'll take 7

@Asteria sends Asteria a full set of gates and flashers

I'm on the edge of my seat here. What did the fantastic GM say next?

4:57 AM
welp we're still taking, lemee removal names for sake of BURNINATE protection and I'll post it

I'm not entirely comfortable with sharing someone's private communications publicly without their permission.
Anonymously or not.

@BESW Fair enough.

@BESW fair

But I'd at least like to know what the GM is expecting @Asteria to do here. I've seen characters rejected for being too over-the-top, but never for being "too boring" for the GM's tastes.

Like, I'm okay with summarizing conversations for the purposes of asking for help. But verbatim copy-paste...

5:01 AM
@MikeQ All be pretty much said was, "Boring", "Crazy is better" and "Noone else was edited"

@Asteria it definitely sounds like there's a tone gap here

@Shalvenay but he won't tell me what the disconnect is >:(

I'm tempted to rescind my whole "devil's advocate" position. This GM seems poor at communicating their expectations and/or accommodating for other people's goals.

...I'd like to see this GM make an inspiration map for their campaign.

Me: Do you want a lighter PC?
Gm: shes not that dark (he said my partners was a darker character then mine)
Me: okay well did you edit his too?
Gm: No
Me: So what about my PC made it not fine?
Gm: I just didnt like it thats all

Unfortunately that last line is a direct quote, not a summary

5:08 AM
Oh my ****** ****** ***************

Hmm... Maybe phrase it like you're doing them a favor. Like, "I want to make sure I have a character that fits the world you made, could you be a bit more specific about what it should and should not have?"

@MikeQ Less of the boring, more of the interesting. Duh.

@Asteria Or maybe ask what the other player character concepts are, for reference, so you can have a better idea of what would fit the GM's setting.

I'm sure this makes sense for the GM, but they may not have a lot of practice getting a new player on the same page for a campaign.

5:11 AM
@BESW that's probably quite a bit of what we're seeing here, yes. they don't have the words for what they want to express

Or perhaps "boring" and "interesting" are alignments... /s

I know that it took a lot of practice and self-reflection for me to learn how to do that; my first five years or so of GMing were almost all with people I spent many hours with outside the game so we had a lot of common unstated schema.

@MikeQ "I dunno she just wasnt very badass"

@MikeQ ...is the other axis Immersive/Cheesed?

@BESW just wait until you get flung into a world where charopt is completely in character xD and legends are told in bars about the finest exploits found ;)

5:14 AM
K so my new character wears an eyepatch, calls everyone "Suga" and murders exclusively with a rotten corndog. Done

@Asteria it sounds like a major tone gap, yeah. I think that the GM is trying to convey that they're after an action-oriented, uptempo game, while your char is built for a more chardev-oriented/contemplative sort of table?

Three words for you, @Asteria
New Man Henderson

@BESW But it's just so tempting! The GM wants upbeat, crazy, wacky, and badass. Why not go all-out "80s action movie reject" to satisfy their demands?

5:17 AM
@Shalvenay I would get that, except for the fact that he *didn't* change my partners character. We live together, so we tend to bounce our PC's off each other to get feedback and make sure things click, so I know a fair bit about his PC.
And it's 100% not a bang bang shooty type PC.

@Asteria weird. so basically, your partner's char is contemplative as well, but they didn't get changed?

@MikeQ The names Sparkle Von Diva A La Mode. Wacky 80's music plays. Sparkles fabulous rainbow afro bounces in the wind

@Asteria As slightly less facetious advice - Maybe ask your partner for feedback regarding the GM's criticisms? It sounds like they understand this GM's motives and expectations, much better than any of us internet strangers do.

@Shalvenay Yup! Honestly thats the most confusing part for me. Because I didn't want to create issues within the party (I'm sick of arguing for hours of what we should do) I made sure that the two PC's would flow together fairly well

@MikeQ that would be a good idea, yeah

5:20 AM
@MikeQ yeah, I'll have to talk to him when he gets home.

I know its bad to jump to conclusions but it feels a little like you were targeted for not being already established in the group

@MikeQ Gm said no to the new Sparkles Von Diva character. A shame, really

Though intent is a big factor and I suppose we can't assume intent yet

@Asteria Well duh. You forgot to dual-wield chainsaws. While riding a skateboard.
Actually, you know what's more badass than dual-wielding?
Triple-wielding. On dual skateboards.

@MikeQ Skateboard? This is the 80's man! She needs hotpants and rollerskates, STAT

5:28 AM
How about... a vampire on rollerskates, dual-wielding a katana and an electric guitar that summons really grungy demons

Isn't a guitar a 2 handed weapon though?

@Nyoze Anything can be a 1-handed weapon if you're cool enough!

Yes, this is true :P

@Nyoze Up that badassery level, pronto

I'll try, but I'm too much of a nerd to be too badassy.
I'm the kind of kid who'd sit in a corner and say that you can't play the guitar while wielding the Katana unless the katana chops the guitar into pieces :O

5:32 AM
... if you really want an awesome 80s brooder, use the Katanas & Trenchcoats character prompts.

and of course, a fedora. Definitely need one of those.

Do you have a link to these? :O

@Nyoze *You use the katana to chop the electric guitar into pieces, thus turning them into electrified boomerangs*
Boom
@MikeQ M'lady ;)

Also, your character has the uncanny ability such that, regardless of which direction they're moving, they are somehow always walking away from an explosion

As the grungy demons emerge from the wreckage, they each grab one, ready to chem gum and kick ass. And they forgot to bring the gum.

5:34 AM
@MikeQ *Moonwalking away from an explosion

80s in full force lol

This character's name has to be a bunch of dark-sounding things crammed together, maybe with some nonsense letters

We've done it lads. The worlds best character

And a minimum of 2 "X"s at the back and front.
Shayde X. McShadowbloodd

xXMurderDeathXx xXPixieLova1996Xx

5:38 AM
As for backstory, you need something really tragic, but also cool
Your entire family was killed by... posers and jocks

@Nyoze Katanas & Trenchcoats is a loving parody of White Wolf's overdramatic and overblown games, and an homage to Highlander.

The posers are also vampires, and they turned your character into a vampire. So you've got the whole "self-hating monster" archetype going on.

@MikeQ Yup, that's a K&T character all the way through.

@MikeQ But you can't resist the calling of your true nature, so you've got the whole "Anti-hero" badguy image

Exactly. When you save the orphanage, you have to compensate by calling one of the kids a mean name. You know, to assert your coolness.

5:45 AM
But you have a soft, sensitive side under that gruff exterior so that the ladies swoon over you

Nonsense. Under that gruff exterior is another gruff layer, filled with... katanas. Ladies love katanas.

true
and scars. Chicks dig scars
aha now I'm just imaging a layer of scar tissue under this PC's skin that has tiny katanas sticking out of it

If this character concept doesn't work, then just go as an amalgamation of Schwarzenegger action heroes

DM: "Your katana has been broken, and a piece has pierced your skin, causing you to start bleeding profusely."
P: "I grab a Katana from my blood, which sizes up to match me and continue fighting"

@MikeQ GET TO DA CHOPPA
"But this is a fantasy game"
YOU CAN'T TELL ME WAT TO DO
"I mean...theres no helicopters....we have a horse??"
[Shifty eyes...Gets on horse] I'LL BE BAAACK

5:54 AM
@Nyoze Now that's a Don't Rest Your Head character.

Now that system sounds pretty awesome.
Even better after 3 or 4 days at a con or something when you're going delerious from lack of sleep yourself.

I think it's more complicated than it really needs to be, and the mechanics don't mesh with the narrative very much.
...also the puns get kind of oppressive.
But the concept is pretty great.

6:11 AM
lol
I enjoyed it but it does seem a little overdone

Damn I'm bored :\

7:02 AM
@Nyoze Write a sestina!

not my idea of fighting boredom but whatever works for you

7:27 AM
I wouldn't know where to start

7:56 AM
Well, you start by picking a subject you can babble on about, and identifying common words that you'd use when talking about it (not necessarily words specific to it). From those words, choose the ones that are most versatile--have multiple meanings, can be different parts of speech, etc.

Ben
GUYS
Do I take an Ability Score Imporvement, or a Feat for my level 6 fighter? (D&D 5e)

Well, that depends. Is your ability score odd or even, and is +1 to attack and damage worth the cost of 1/2 feats?

Ben
Stats are: 18, 10, 17, 11, 12, 14

(Assuming you want to pump str)
17 is Dex?

Ben
str is 18
I could boost dex for a bit better ac and init
17 is con
as for feats I only have Tavern Brawler so far

8:04 AM
so in 5e you choose between those things?

Ben
correction - I also have charger
@Trogdro yeah. At a level up that offers an "Ability Score Improvement", the GM can also allow players to instead take a feat.

Trogdro, the ultimate
XD

Ben
Lol

just sounds like a great dragon name

Ben
Sorry in the middle of 3 things atm haha
playing the game, levelling up and talking here

8:07 AM
nooo issue

Ben
Yes!
I am wearing splint so the only reason to increase any stats would be to boost my str to +5
Feat it is!
I'm thinking Great Weapon Master or Sentinel
Ohh... what about Savage attacker? How does that work with the Great Weapon Fighting?

8:22 AM
Don't ask me :\ I know nothing about 5e feats :P
Assuming that HP from con is boosted per each level when you take your next Con point though?
If not, grab that Con point now so you don't miss out on those precious points
Already a question lol

Ben
Nice
@Nyoze True... I am doing pretty well on 53 at level 6 though. So I won't complain :P

Apparantly Savage Attacker looks better then it plays :O

Ben
Fair enough

53hp at level 6? That feels low... But then again, I'm used to playing with full hd progression

Ben
8:40 AM
I went for the ASI. Boosted con to 18 (+4) and int to 12

Oh...
You get 2 stat points?

Ben
2 into 1 stat, or 1 into 2 stats

Damn. How often do you get that?
Wait. 5e ability scores are capped at 20?

Ben
Yeah

How am I supposed to make my glass cannon fighter with this system? I can't work like this '/storms out

Ben
8:45 AM
It's usually around every 2/3/4 levels
I'm still not sold though
I am currently at +7 to hit... and that's only going to get higher

What's the average AC you've been up against?

Ben
Mid-teens?
so average 15

So at --5, you'll be needing a 12 or higher to hit on average... Sounds great if you're fighting a lot of weaker/easier to hit enemies :D
But depends on what your GM is throwing at you.

Ben
Yeah. And it is optional
the main incentive is the additional attack
Which, unfortunately doesn't count as an "attack action" XD

9:00 AM
Oh my god I wish it did in Pathfinder lol
Vital Strike, Oh, you killed him? Cleave into Vital Strike!

Ben
What if I kill one with an attack, allowing me to make another, and I kill them too... does that mean it keeps going??

Anyway, I'm out
Cya!

Ben
Ciao
Wait, no never mind. You only have 1 bonus action lol

1 hour later…
Ben
10:31 AM
Well I'm feeling slightly let down...
The DM has abandoned his own marvellously planned out world, storylines, and everything in favour of a Pre-written campaign
Tomb of Annihilation

11:12 AM
[has a vicarious sad]
@Ben Ah, so your armor class is moody and changes hairstyles a lot.

Ben
I mean, I can understand that trying to run a game online can be difficult, so having a game where you don't really have to think can make that easier in favour of trying to moderate an online chat room, but in all honesty 2/3 of us are still fairly new to the game

For almost my first year of D&D 4e, I had my own campaign story (set at least a thousand years before the "default" timeline) but just re-skinned pre-made adventures for each part of it.

Ben
And the way the DM ended the previous adventure was pretty blunt too. A cool flight on the back of a dragon, then dumped us in a foreign land and abandoned us - completely cutting us off from the world our characters had really become a part of

@Ben Aaaaah no.

Ben
That's what I'm most salty about :(

11:25 AM
It's hard to build up genuine engagement between players and the setting in D&D. You don't just throw that away.
It makes 'em that much more reluctant to get invested in whatever you've got for 'em next.
> BURNINATE. Every time you begin or enter a scene, you must choose something which catches on fire. You get one free invoke on that aspect.

Ben
Even just the theme - we were playing in a realistic, nitty-gritty, world that needed to be cleaned up - corrupt soldiers, evil hags polluting the place, and we were actually making a difference!
Now, this new world is all dinosaurs and magic sparkling waters and exotic creatures.
It's a complete 180

Can you express to the GM that you were really invested in that setting and are disappointed with it being abandoned?

Ben
I haven't yet, but I want to.

I think it's important to give feedback.
Emphasize that you liked what the GM was doing!

Ben
When the dm brought it up everyone was talking about the pros of switching it up. I didn't want to look like the salty one amidst all the positives

11:44 AM
@BESW lol

11:55 AM
hello

GREETINGS
hello miniature bespectacled octopus

what are you humans up to?

ha-haa yes i am completely an authentic human. i am having a "morning" "tea".
and doing "business" "work"
in the normal human fashion

I also enjoy nutrition and suboptimal yet profit-oriented communication.

> RAMPAGE!! Every time you enter a new zone, choose a thing in either the zone you're moving into or out of to smash. Create an aspect describing how it's been smashed with no free invokes.

Ben
12:01 PM
I'm not sure if this needs to be escalated by dragons, or intermediated by an "average" human that is completely unaware
Since I am more the latter. I shall.
@doppelgreener @eimyr [wave]

@Ben [waves!]

@doppelgreener Meh. Every time you enter a new zone, choose an aspect you're particularly indifferent towards. It takes two Fate Points to invoke or compel this aspect.

@Ben I agree with BESW about bringing that up. Imagine if everybody else feels just the way you do: reluctant about leaving the old setting, but giving things the benefit of the doubt, and since everyone else is being positive they would prefer to also be positive.

@Ben hi

There are a lot of times I've spoken up to say something nobody else has said, and sometimes everyone else turns out to agree, or some agree, or nobody else agrees -- no matter which way it shakes out, despite how scary it might be to speak up, it's been helpful for me and/or the group.
There's also an option to link the two worlds and/or thrust them into the same spot. "So you know how you were cleaning up that world? Well now a dinosaurverse also just collided with it."
(that may be not great or it may be insanely awesome like why not)
Recently Magic the Gathering came out with Ixalan:

12:09 PM
@doppelgreener jungletopus?

Ixalan is Pirates vs Dinosaurs with a side of Merfolks and Vampires.
The Dinosaurs are one with a Mayincatec civilisation (basically: smash Mayan + Incan + Aztec civilisation together into one. You wind up with something that's a mixed bag of being representative of all of them and of none of them.)
@eimyr The one in front is Vraska, a Gorgon, who came from another world and is stuck on Ixalan and decided she'd be a pirate.

@doppelgreener MtG lore is lost on me, but I do appreciate the lengths the writing team goes to.

And the pirates who disagreed have generally all been turned to stone and/or otherwise dead-ified, as is the piratey way.

12:36 PM
@eimyr I do as well, considering their job half the time is the development team saying: "Hey, we're going to do all these crazy things with this new set of cards. Could you make it make sense somehow?"
(but ultimately this comes back to the dinosaurs-smashed-into-a-different-world thing: @Ben Pirates vs Dinosaurs was the combination I never knew I wanted until it was given to me. Would Dinosaurs in that world you've been working on be cool? If not, that is OK. If it is, that could be awesome.)
