Follow's in its last two hours, too.
can "playtest" fit "Trek Playtest"?
Two items are already lost at the end of the list, so sure.

What's new?
I started playing DnD 5e recently
00:25
How's that working for you?
I'm having fun.
I'm playing a warlock
we converted over from Tavern Tales in the middle of House of the Beast, so we're level 6
it's nice to have a range of spells/invocations, and I haven't found it too difficult to get a handle on everything even though we didn't start at level 1
That's cool.
It's a very strange experience having to restrict myself to two spells per day, on the other hand.
Heh, yeah.
I have to decide exactly when I think the most useful time to use them would be
how's everything here?
00:31
I'd like to try 5e for a one-shot or something some day, but haven't found the right confluence of adventure, players, and interest.
warlock & cleric would be the classes i'm most interested in should we ever get around to trying that game
but iirc only the cleric is in the public materials
warlock is as well
Nah, the SRD includes all of the classes, including the Warlock.
Where do I find the most recent publicly available material?
only the demon patron and (I think) only the pact of the blade options, though
00:34
@A.McCurran All 3 pacts, actually. They only included 1 subclass for every other class, but the Warlock has 2 subclass choices, so they included all of the pact options but only one patron.
out of five characters, everyone in our party chose something with spellcasting capabilities - 2 warlocks, a druid, a cleric, and a fighter who took the eldritch knight option.
at first I was surprised, but then I noticed just how many of the 5e classes are spellcasters of one sort or another
I suspect you'd have more fun with the other patrons, though :(
what're they trying to do, convince me their classes suck?
Convince you to give them money, obviously. :P
00:51
hey there @A.McCurran
hey @Shalvenay
how're things going?
fine. I'm glad I haven't taken 30d6 damage over two rounds from submersion in lava like someone in my party did. How are you?
@A.McCurran zoinks, and doing alright here, hoping to dust my (Paladin/)Warlock off soon, actually
@Miniman "here have the garbage option among the warlock classes. this will give you a great idea of how good the game is. you should give us money for this stuff." 10/10 would pitch like this
00:56
@doppelgreener -- I think the reason they went with the Fiend for the SRD is because it's what most people think of when they hear the term "warlock"
@doppelgreener I've always wanted a warlock that could cast fireball!
@Shalvenay that could be passable
Also, if the 5e patrons are anything like the 4e patrons, the fiendish pact is gonna be the DPS pact.
And D&D has this thing where it assumes people want to maximise their damage numbers more than anything else.
@doppelgreener It's not a garbage option by any means; personally, I think it's the best option. Just, from what I know of you I suspect you might find the other options more fun.
@Miniman oh phew good okay
[somehow assumed @Miniman was just making generic recommendations without taking doppelgreener's personal feelings into account]
note to self: conceal personal feelings behind doppelganger's identity better, people are onto me
01:03
@BESW This is also definitely a thing.
oh huh yeah
i'll definitely enjoy the others more then
It's also the tankiest one, which I know doesn't help at all.
By "tanky" I assume you mean more the 3.5 "hard to kill" than the 4e "forces hard choices" philosophy.
Yep.
Star Pact was 4e's DPS Warlock right?
IIRC Star Pact forsook everything in efforts to call down the biggest, heaviest, explodiest spells upon people en masse.
01:12
The Infernal pact was the DPS star.
Star Pact was more control/support.
maybe i was confusing the name of that one.
Infernal was wading into the middle of your foes and burning them down.
where do 5e Feylocks fit in? Are they the control option, if you will?
01:14
yeah?
they can cast sleep, dominate beast, calm emotions, and have an ability that causes everyone around them to be charmed/frightened
From what I've seen, the Archfey patron option tries to be the slippery "avoiding combat with utility" pact, but its abilities often have too many caveats--like a lot of enemies being immune to them.
that's a better way of putting it
immunity to charm effects would nullify half their abilities for starters
it's good for providing tools for trying to avoid combat if you want to, not at keeping you out of combat unless you absolutely must
Compare 4e's fey pact powers, which let you teleport whenever a cursed target drops to 0 hp, and your spammable attack power makes you invisible to the target.
That's some good solid "I fight on my terms" utility.
yeah -- I'd say 4e fey is probably stronger on that front.
01:21
The key is that they aren't dealing with debuffs an enemy might be immune to: they're dealing with things the warlock gets to do or be.
01:39
yeah i will definitely not be going into 5e expecting to get the 4e 'lock experience
the 4e 'lock operated well with 4e's paradigm of saying "here, have a whole ton of cool unique awesome fun stuff you can do, just for becoming this class at level one."
which worked well because 4e was built for a world where you were already a singularly enormously powerful individual by the point you were level 1; there are not many other people in the world like you, if any.
01:55
@nitsua60 it has come time to figure out how i should enchant my sward.
I picked the life sword
i'm weighing up between that one and the summoning sword
because summoning things sounds nice
and not getting hit is sorta like healing
but magic the gathering taught me that lifelink is great
i have chosen the SWORD OF FLAMES this time around.
because having things on fire seems p good
03:12
@BESW I have an index of all official (non Unearthed Arcana) free PDFs, linked on my profile. It also has links for where to download the PDFs.
@Adeptus Thanks.
I'm looking into the possibility of putting it on DMs Guild as a pay-what-you-want. I saw an index for (something... spells?) for the print books, so there's some precedent
03:27
@doppelgreener I didn't even know there were more than two options
03:57
hey there @nitsua60
04:20
@doppelgreener IIRC you can eventually figure out how to turn it into a sword of lifeflamesummoning, but that's after they start using exponential notation for lollipops and candies.
@Shalvenay hiya
@nitsua60 I am not sure I can play it that long, especially since it doesn't seem to keep those saves
@trogdor Really? I don't remember it having trouble with saves, but it was five years (or so) ago that I last did so....
if I turn off my computer, it doesn't remember the last save I did
so I have to restart
so unless I am just doing the saves wrong, which I don't think I am but which is possible, I won't get too far
So save it before closing browser, then reload http://candies.aniwey.net/index.php?pass=[yourcodehere]--does that work?
oooh, put the code into the URL?
it didn't explain that to me
04:27
yup--otherwise you're starting a new game each time.
yeah
(the link next to the SAVE button, if inspected, passes the save-code through the URL)
I thought I had to click save when I opened it again and put the code I got in there
That might be the wa it's supposed to work, but I always just skipped those steps and reloaded the url+savecode
on reflection, I am not sure it is supposed to work there
or if it is,... it might just have been poor planning
04:32
@trogdor Okay, so it sounds like you've been (a) starting a new game, (b) saving that game seconds in, (c) reloading from that save-point. =\
yeah
but I know what I am supposed to do to make it work now, so it's all good
Okay, troggy's strategy, take two: save after making progress!
=D
I dunno, makes sense to me: Trogdor has invented the save-game version of burninating.
Btw, @BESW, thanks for the heads-up on product ID.
yey!
04:39
Also btw, did you and others play anything on discord Monday night?
yesterday, by BESW
Today we played Lasers & Feelings. One crew member saved a ship from burning up on re-entry, and the other crew member defected to the despot's army using the first crew member as a character reference.
yesterday, by BESW
"Who is this? How did you get my number?"
"This is Zorgon the Conquerer. On a scale of one to five, how would you rate your ship doctor's dedication to being a team player?"
oh, dear.
It concluded with the ship's doctor prescribing sedatives to Zorgon and his entire army, and the scientist nailing Zorgon with a ballistic shuttlecraft.
looks like it was you and shalvey and VI... trogdor just lurking?
Yes, but we named the crashing ship in his honor.
04:42
excellent.
how'd roll over/roll under go over?
I'm the only person who ever has trouble with that mechanic.
We're going to try some D&D 3.5 and 5e some time, 'cause VI thinks she ought to have that experience under her belt.
well... when I tried colonypunk with fellow (non-gamer) teachers, it was a little troublesome
But for next time, I'm looking at Do: Pilgrims of the Flying Temple.
don't know it
@BESW still mad that you named a non-military ship after me (not really, my ego is still inflating)
04:46
> The Universe is full of big troubles. When people need a hand, they write letters to the Temple asking for help from the pilgrims — young travelers with good intentions, the ability to fly, and not much else! The pilgrims come to help, but they get into a lot of trouble along the way. Growing up is crazy! (source)
It's a GMless game where your characters are defined by how they help people and how they get in trouble.
gotta call it a night--ta-ta, all!
Each turn you semi-randomly (draw two-colored stones from a bag, put back one color, count how many are left) decided what combination of help and trouble your pilgrim will experience. For each time your pilgrim helps someone, you write a sentence describing it. For each time your pilgrim gets in trouble, the rest of the group collaborates to write that sentence.
ttfn
night
05:42
@BESW have you worked out a substitute for drawing stones, for online (and non-visual) play?
@Adeptus Dice work roughly: 3d6, odds are black, evens are white.
It doesn't capture the changing variables in the bag through the session though.
So I'm going to experiment with my dicebot's deck of cards.
That could work

3 hours later…
08:25
@BESW well, that is what happens when the game has a save button, no load button, and doesn't specifically tell you how you should use the code you get from clicking save
game design XD
08:59
hrmpf... need someone to review edits... because there is a need to differ Exalted 2 telated rule question from Exalted 3 related questions... at least imho.
and better to tag them now as you can stll try to differ between 2E and 3E... and maybe there are some questions about 1E out there.
For revising tagging structures, make a meta post (but check first if there's existing dialogue on the subject).
There are like... one question about 3E specifically (mine) and most other rule questions are 2E as I skim through them. ok, bringing to Meta...
09:31
hmm, how to make those boxes for tags in a post?
[tag:tag-goes-here]
2
ok, thanks, now it's in the queue... meta.rpg.stackexchange.com/questions/6597/exalted-tag-revision if you want to share...
10:02
@trogdor there are three: you can enchant your sword with a fire scroll, life potion, or imp summoning scroll
yeah, I know that now, I just didn't have an imp scroll to know it at the time
oh, i getcha

Q: Exalted Tag Revision

TrishWith Exalted currently in the 3rd edition (since this year), we should make sure that those 2nd/2.5th Edition Questions are marked distinct from those that target 3rd Edition specifically. At the moment, I know of 1 question about 3rd Edition specifically: Artifact & Evocation creation guideli...

@Trish and if you want to link specifically to a tag on meta and not on main site, you can use [meta-tag:tag-goes-here], e.g. [meta-tag:status-complete] ->
@doppelgreener Ah, good to know!
Ummm, @Trish? Don't take a dramatic tagging change into your own hands until there's been time for discussion on meta.
@BESW I stopped after the first 2 questions - mainly because of what you said.
how to make a footnote? I found an old post where I could re-find the old link spot on wayback machine for one link, but not for an other...
10:32
@Trish write it as a sup1 and then later down write 1: loremipsum or 1: loremipsum depending on whether you want it in bigger text or smaller text.
the only special formatting here is the superscript provided by the element. there is also subscript with .
10:51
generally the reason for waiting until we talk on meta is so we can sort out what we'll call the thing
11:34
@doppelgreener That is, there are no footnotes. There are just things that look like footnotes.
12:00
@Anaphory yea, using Ref-style didn't worked, that's why I asked.
@Anaphory thanks for articulating that :D

15:06
@nitsua60 It just hit me that the G.M.O.O.H. potion - the MOO potion - is the one that can access the cow level.
=)
@doppelgreener It just hit me that I've ruined yours and @trogdor's lives. Or, at least, your weeks.
have you experimented with potion recipes?
15:56
@nitsua60 i haven't actually
16:06
i did however use my wishing well opportunity to get a bunch of scrolls and potions, so i've discovered a berserk potion exists... but not how to make it.
16:40
Are you exponential-gaming, or what is this about?
16:58
yesterday, by nitsua60
@trogdor I was going to say that FF(1) and Myst were the last console and computer games that I'd finished... then I remembered the greatest (by enjoyment to programming ratio) game ever: candy box
Careful @Anaphory, you could fall in =)
@nitsua60 With that interface, I'll take it as a yes.
Is it better or worse than A Dark Room?
17:17
@Anaphory It's Cookie Clicker meets adventure game. You'll see when you get The Sword.
That sounds like you don't know A Dark Room, because the same holds there!
Although I think it takes more time to go on the first adventure in ADR.
17:34
@nitsua60 Fun thing I've found: acid rain / earthquake scrolls kill the enemies but don't wipe them off the map. Instead your hero approaches a 0hp avatar and just collects the loot. On the cow level, though, the avatars move around, and they still move around even if you've killed them all with acid rain, giving you a bunch of technically dead cows running around.
@doppelgreener mooooove along, zombie cows!
So it's been suggested that I write up my module ideas and put them up on the DM's Guild as "pay what you want" titles. I probably won't make more than a few bucks, but it should be a fun exercise at least. Any advice for doing this?
@Fibericon are these something like adventure seeds?
Not sure what an adventure seed is. They'd be adventures you could pick up and run, but shorter than say, Curse of Strahd.
Oh, so full on modules (say, 2-4 or even 8-hour adventures)? When you said "module ideas" I wasn't sure if you meant something like one-paragraph descriptions of an adventure.
17:40
Ah. Yeah, they'd be 2-4 hours, probably doable in one session (depending on the players).
@Fibericon No good advice, but if you want a playtester/proofreader feel free to ping me.
I'll keep that in mind, thanks! I'm putting it together on the homebrewery, which is really cool. I learned about it from someone who was trying to put together a Dark Souls D&D conversion.
yeah, the homebrewery is a pretty cool thing.
Any concerns about "trade dress"?
17:49
It's good that things like this exist. I'm a lot better at writing stories than formatting documents.
Hmm, that's a good point, actually. I'm not sure if it will be a problem.
I wonder: have you seen other homebrewery stuff on DM's Guild?
I think I have.
Though maybe it's just similar. Fee, Fly, Foe, Fund looks like it was done in homebrewery.
Whelp, I shot off a question to the site. I'll see what they have to say on the matter.
@Fibericon off to DM's guild?
Yep
Holy moly. They already wrote back and said they passed the question to their publisher relations team.
18:05
Yeah, the one time I contacted DM's Guild people they were good about providing a confirmation quickly, another day or two a really detailed answer, then really responsive with the two or three follow-ups that spawned.

20:07
@LegendaryDude Basically -- trying to rescue any one particular question is a major faux pas.
Specific question points are worthless.
If someone opened a specific question, there's no reason that specific question ID has to be open. Especially not if you're going to the extent of changing it to something it wasn't. Questions don't need rescuing.
Closing a new person's first question isn't always pleasant but it's actually shown to have similar user retention rates to like, basically any other action. That means: it has no effect at all on average. Some people get angry about it. That's why we need to talk them through it.
Thank you for posting your own self Q&A.
I dare say if that huge change hadn't been made we could instead be talking about how the dude was just looking for an RPG, and there is one, and it's effectively just a "does this exist" question, which is a whole different thing, but right now I am reluctant to go into that.
"Don't change questions into something totally different" is almost universally the case, unless we're actually workshopping someone's own question. And "don't change posts in a way that wholly changes someone's content and intent" is always a content guideline.
Ok, well he's edited that question and explicitly brougth it up.

Q: Are "Does this type of product exist" questions acceptable?

rStyskelI am interested in knowing if a particular type of product exists, that is a campaign setting entirely divorced from a game system.
