I'd answer myself, but mxy and I are having a bizarre disagreement, and I'm tense about the possibility of a downvote disrupting my max for the day... all of which strongly suggests that I should get off the Stack, go home (i've been here editing my answer instead for the last, er, two hours) and eat/sleep. >__<
But yeah feel free to steal that too, if you end up being the person who writes said competing answer. ^__^
@SirTechSpec Ah, that ridiculous thing where you get 400 rep in a day, take one downvote at the end, and don't count count as having rep-capped. Fun times.
@SirTechSpec Not a chance, I stay far away from the social ones :)
@Miniman Perfectly understandable, especially since so many of us are happy to jump on them. (I don't think it's actually because everyone loves social questions, but because they're usually system-agnostic.)
@Miniman Yeah I think I counted 326. Which... again, I actually sat there and counted, not a good sign. i3.kym-cdn.com/photos/images/facebook/000/415/528/38f.png
00:41
@BESW @NexTerren Entropy? Still has negative connotations, I guess. We tend to associate order/law with good, therefore chaos/disorder/entropy must be not-good.
00:58
@mxyzplk I found curious your edit of this question rpg.stackexchange.com/q/83618/22566
Others first commented on the irony of this attitude given the core issue in the question. Is this a case of "I am my brother's keeper" in action? The person asking the question has been with RPG.SE longer than I have.
@KorvinStarmast I'd assume that it was to clearly express the sentiment. "Medieval grade" isn't really useful; we all sort of get what it's meant to mean, but it seems better to have the meaning actually stated.
@Miniman yeah, it could mean gender roles, or the gender value set
@KorvinStarmast What attitude? I'm not sure what you're seeing as troublesome/confusing about the edit.
@SirTechSpec -- btw, I'm abstaining on that question because my views on gender identity are extremely politically incorrect, despite being inclusive/accommodating
(I frame the gender identity discussion in terms of "everyone has different mating logic wiring in their heads, and our society doesn't handle this notion well" -- this works well in practice, but is way outside the normal discourse)
OK, if I have to spell it out for you: I find it ironic that someone trying to help someone else dealing with stereotypes uses a stereotype in asking the question. I see no reason to not let it stand, rather than cover up for a double standard. On the other hand, the person asking the question sincerely wishes to help someone who I suspect has been burned more than once, IRL and on the Net ...
01:11
@KorvinStarmast So my comment wasn't so much a comment on any irony, but honest unsurety about what was trying to be conveyed. (Good luck to all parsing that last sentence. I think I've forgotten English.)
I didn't know if the OP was just snarkily/passive-aggressively trying to say that some at tables treat them in ways that make them uncomfortable...
Yes, you have to spell it out. No need to be condescending; I thought you were talking about Mxy's attitude.
For all: I chose the "am I my brother's keeper" explicitly for a reason. Mxy's approach to the question and answers is spot on, and I've upvoted all of his comments. @BESW How did you see my point as his attitude? I may be failing in communication 101.
or if there actually was some well-known prior attitude being referenced. I'm a total neophyte in issued of gender identity/politics/history/psychology, so couldn't be sure if I was actually missing something meaningful. (Didn't want to read it as snark if it wasn't.)
@nitsua60 I sincerely believe that the querent is trying to help a friend who has been burned once too often.
@KorvinStarmast Me too.
01:14
Because you wanted to talk to Mxy, so I assumed that the unstated subject of "this attitude" was the person you're talking to.
Jun 9 at 22:09, by BESW
English! It tries to mean things.
I just didn't know if "medieval attitudes" meant "attitudes I don't like" or "attitudes that used to be prevalent hundreds of years ago"
@nitsua60 yeah -- that's merely poor phraseology :)
OK, I see how I was sloppy in presentation. thanks to BESW and Adeptus for the enlightenment.
@KorvinStarmast You said "I found curious your edit" and then "Others first commented on the irony of this attitude." I assumed you were talking about the attitude of the edit.
01:16
By "this attitude" I meant what was in the original question. Should take a bit more care with how I say What I say, and your feedback is well worth it!
@Shalvenay But I didn't want to just assume that and rule out the possibility that this was a very well informed querent referencing historical attitudes (which may have pointed in who-knows-what direction!) that I was unfamiliar with. And I didn't have my Medieval Studies BA of a wife in the house to check with =)
@nitsua60 yeah -- I am sure some groups do get picky about gender roles as well
Anyone have a good source for ordering custom swag (apparel, accessories, &c.) in small quantities? I've done customink a bunch of times, but I'm getting near the end of what they have in their "any quantity" selection.
@nitsua60 speaking of that -- I'm actually wondering what a good source for custom insignia is
@Shalvenay Do you mean producing the art, or putting it on things once you've got the art?
01:21
@nitsua60 putting it on things -- I can deal with the art itself as it's already extant (EVE corp/alliance insignia -- I do so want to put together a cosplay of my EVE main for a con sometime)
In my experience, making friends with someone with a good sewing room and experience with applique has been the way to go =)
(I've got a neighbor who makes a lot of custom stuff for the robotics team.)
@nitsua60 yeah, I was thinking that'd be it as well -- but how do you get stuff suitable for the applique process when you're starting with a computer image?
A small-footprint mom-and-pop-style curtains/alteration store may be a good place to look, too.
@ManojAgrawal Hi there--welcome =)
what is going on here
01:25
@Shalvenay For large stuff I've just large-format printed graphics for my neighbor and she's worked magic with tracing paper and scissors. For smaller stuff I've gone to another neighbor with a "cutter" that she uses with scrapbooking to cut out the fabrics, which then the first assembles.
@ManojAgrawal Just two American dudes talking needlecraft =)
@ManojAgrawal What's going on in your life?
@nitsua60 I've used cafepress.com and zazzle.com. I even have "stores" on both, selling a few designs
@nitsua60 yeah, needlecraft in the furtherance of cosplay
xD
@nitsua60 hmm
i am indian
@Adeptus Did I read some armor-making blogging by you a while back? Or was that someone else?
can i join this disscusion
01:26
@ManojAgrawal Living in India, or living elsewhere?
@ManojAgrawal how're things going over there? and go right ahead :)
@ManojAgrawal Of course.
@Adeptus @nitsua60 I can second the recommendation for cafepress - I use it to get cool, fairly unique stuff that other people design, but it should be just as good for stuff you design yourself.
@nitsua60 india only
@nitsua60 thankx
@nitsua60 I put up a link of a friend's chainmail business. So, the blog wasn't by me, but the link was.
01:27
@Miniman @Adeptus [looking at cafepress now]
@ManojAgrawal do you RPG much?
@nitsua60 One warning - they both are fairly shy of copyright infringement. Other than the IPs they have licenses for, they will block anything remotely questionable (even parodies, etc)
@Adeptus Thanks. I create "team apparel" for my family every Christmas, and (like I said) I'm running out of what customink'll do in small quantities.
@Adeptus Wait, really? They must have licenses for a lot of stuff, then, given the amount of franchise-specific designs on there.
hey again @SirTechSpec
01:30
Last year I couldn't find anything and so just built a picnic table for the yard, painted with our "team logo". (Which is actually kinda a good present, but pretty useless in Northeast US in December!)
@Miniman They might not pick up every infringement, but I've had a few parodies pulled. Their front pages have a list of licensed franchises, I think
Hey gang. Not really here as such, just checking to see if anyone has penetrated the fog around my answer yet.
@SirTechSpec ah -- did you catch my remark re: why I'm not answering the question btw?
I'm picturing the optical illusion making the rounds of circles that look like squares in reflection. People are clearly looking at it and seeing 2 different things.
@SirTechSpec Looking back I like how the edit to the preamble gave a lot more context to your numbered points. Makes it clear that you are thinking about online play, not just in-person. (Also, point #3 is HUGE. Great wisdom there.)
afk a few hours
01:36
@Shalvenay Yes, and I think it's totally appropriate to abstain from a question of the kind where you're not working with the framework/model the querent exists.
@SirTechSpec nods exactly
*expects
@nitsua60 Wonderful, thank you. Working in IT communications I can usually figure out the right amount of context to give, but I obviously didn't get the one right on the first try. Glad we're making progress!
Quick aside: anyone know how to force the mobile interface here in chat?
@SirTechSpec There's a link titled "mobile" in the bottom right corner of the screen.
Excellent, I knew it would be something simple like that. Now if I can only manage to click it at that size...
01:45
@SirTechSpec Yeah, that's always tricky.
OK, got around it by going to another room and using the drop down.
@NexTerren : consider this which I've found to be an interesting take on how to revamp the alignment system, along with some critique of why it's a poor breakdown in the first place.
also, hello everyone else
@NexTerren I should probably note that I have not had a chance to actually use it in a game
hey @JoelHarmon
hey @Shalvenay
@JoelHarmon how're things going?
02:00
not bad
OK here
Had any great conversations recently?
OK, I'm actually gone now- bedtime. Not sure how much y'all will see me for the next week while I'm at the con, but I wish you well until we meet again!
which con?
@SirTechSpec
had an hour and a half long talk recently with some friends about how social groups fit together, and how people become aware of shifts in them, as well as their nature. It was pretty interesting, but needs some time to ferment.
[A somewhat interesting query.](data.stackexchange.com/rpg/query/508356/who-answers-my-questions)
02:06
@Miniman Haitchteateapea.
Gah, too late to edit.
@Miniman What is it counting?
it appears to be the total score that any user got answering your questions
...I've gotten more rep answering my own questions than the next two folks combined.
what percentage of your questions do you self-answer?
02:20
@Miniman Next up: Whose questions do I answer?
@JoelHarmon "How many" doesn't matter so much when this one is in the count.
@BESW Once I get back to my computer
@BESW likely
Is there any way to send someone a message? PMs, email through the site?
Looked but can't find.
@Longspeak not really, why are you seeking that?
241
A: Any way to send a personal message to another user?

dbrNope. This has been suggested many, many times, going all the way back to the earliest days of the site. Prior to the creation of Meta SO, feature requests were posted on UserVoice: Messaging between users Declined without comment. User messaging or wall it's possible we might have so...

02:28
An answer to a question that's not worthy of being an actual answer, too off topic to be a comment, but still might help the asker.
if you click on someone's name in chat as a link, the resulting page has a "start a new room with this user" button
never tried it, but there it is
@Longspeak There is, quite intentionally, no way to send someone any kind of private message.
Ah well.
Thanks for the fast answer. :)
Yeah, inviting them to a chat room is the closest you can come.
I wouldn't even do that in a comment. :)
02:31
You can invite someone to a chat room from their chat profile.
eg, my profile has an "invite this user to" button.
@BESW were you looking for how many answers you gave to each user, or what the current total score is for each user?
@JoelHarmon I'm more interested in the quantity than the quality at the moment.
Okay... followup question... is a parent user an actual parent? Or just like a master account?
@Longspeak master account if you will
I may be way off, but here's what I've got @BESW and @Miniman [score](http://data.stackexchange.com/rpg/query/508371/who-answers-my-questions)

Annnnd some idiot didn't realize he could retitle those queries. facepalm
02:54
Well, I tried a private chat room. Dunno if it works, but it's better than twiddling my thumbs. Thanks, people!
what about us sapient giant spiders?
@KorvinStarmast Like what Miniman said, it was edited to more clearly state the meaning. And I assumed those comments were there suggesting improvements to the question - we don't leave issues in a question to "highlight the irony" or whatever, and frankly that kind of thinking doesn't really have a place here. Stick to improving questions and answers and answering questions, it's safer.
@JoelHarmon Looks good to me!
@Miniman Great! I have SQL experience, but no familiarity with the SE schema. So, huzzah educated guessing.
@JoelHarmon You need the http:// prefix, it's the same thing that happened to me.
03:02
I edited it in, then back out again, and it didn't seem to work
https:// worked on the spiders joke, so I'm thinking it might be that
@JoelHarmon Luckily, their schema is...absolutely beautiful. Seriously, it's one of the nicest databases I've ever seen.

[pokes Windows with sticks] Upgrade, [snip] you.
@BESW There's a working opt-out now!
@Miniman Hm?
@BESW The "Upgrade to Windows 10" prompt now has a working "no, and never ask me this again" button.
I'm actually trying to upgrade it.
Reluctantly, but still.
@BESW Ah, right. I would've phrased that as "Upgrade, you [snip]."
04:37
The Fairy Nuff has taken the day off with the vapours.
@BESW I wonder what "the vapours" actually means. I recently ran across "a case of the megrims", too - are they both just indicating "generically unwell", or is there a deeper meaning here?
to be fair, Windows 10 has proven to be ok for some things, the computers at my workplace all have it and haven't like, screwed us over yet
@Miniman It's specifically a loss of mental focus. Light-headedness, chronic distraction, fuzzy-mindedness, fainting, etc.
(Originally, it's a reference to smelling salts and similar "vapour" style treatments of that kind of malady.)
however, I do still take the stance that I don't want it on my personal system, Windows 10 can go REDACTED itself on that acount
@BESW Huh, interesting. Google suggests that the megrims refer specifically to bouts of depression or low spiritedness.
Now I'm going to have to find an excuse to use them together. "I have a serious case of the megrim vapours."
04:45
i upgraded to windows 10 more or less immediately and i love it
actually i think i waited a couple of months for a particular set of bugs to get fixed
once that patch went through i dove into it
And now they've set a deadline toward the end of this month on free upgrades.
So I'm trying to upgrade my media PC and my dad's desktop.
[googles "what is winsxs why does it sound naughty and why is it 19GB?"]
@JoelHarmon You need the http:// inside the round brackets () with the rest of the url. Also, won't work in a multi-line post
@mxyzplk You and I may never see totally eye to eye on this one, but I do think it expresses more clearly now what I was trying to say, so thank you for sticking with it until the issue came to light.
05:02
VTC multiple questions rpg.stackexchange.com/q/83654/1204
wait, i'm just gonna edit it down
05:26
@BESW ditto. Weird.
@nitsua60 One of the guys in my top three hasn't been active on the site in years.
(But he was super helpful when I first started stumbling into Fate from D&D.)
@BESW Oh? I'd better upgrade the Netbook while I still can. (I think Win7 Starter is eligible for free upgrade). Not touching my main laptop. It'll stay Win7 for the rest of its life.
yeah I don't want Windows 10, if nothing else it changes a little too much about the layout that 7 has that I like
even without any other problems it may or may not still have
My laptop came with 8 :(, but I'm not so thrilled about 10 that I'm ok with the pain of upgrading.
@BESW One of the guys in my top three is some mini man... don't know who that is. And then there's a seven-sided die. I've looked through a lot of Dragon ads and never seen one of those for sale. This site is weird, I say.
=)
05:37
@nitsua60 That's nothing, I have a wax eagle. How could a wax eagle answer questions? The query must be broken.
@Miniman Whaddya expect? Programmers can't even spell "sequel."
@Miniman Given the option of 8 or 10, I'd go for 10. You can get the interface closer to 7's.
@Adeptus Yeah, I know it's an improvement. But I've got everything working, and it's not enough of an improvement for me to be ok with potentially breaking it all.
@BESW @nitsua60 the heck is this top three thing?
05:42
oh ho, no wonder I have no idea what the heck that is
@trogdor And while you're at it, who questions my answers?
05:52
That last one isn't really who questions my answers, it's actually whose questions do I answer. So here is the real who questions my answers (or questions): Who dares question me?
Obviously, it's best to disregard yourself and GMJoe in that list.
06:22
GMJoe's only my fourth most prolific commenter. Third if you discount me.
Only two comments from @BESW? I'm devastated!
@lisardggY It's almost as if he follows good site practices and cleans his comments up or something...
@Miniman Also, almost as if we're both here on chat a lot and can communicate and comment here.
@lisardggY That reminds me, I always meant to mention: Every time I see your username I think of it as "Lizard GG WHY?" - obviously you were utterly defeated by a lizard at some point, is there more to that story?
Yeah, wait, I just gotta find it...
Jun 27 at 9:32, by lisardggY
When I first got online, I decided to use what I thought was an obscure mythological reference. Only to find that the internet is full of Scandinavians.
Jun 27 at 9:33, by lisardggY
Thus, I found myself reversing it to lisardggY.
While reverse-Yggdrasil is a pretty reliably unique nick (I only ran into someone else using it twice in the last 20 years), it also leads to confusion, either of the "oh, you're the guy with the random jumble of letters for a twitter handle, right?", or of the "Oh, looks like your name is Lisa, so let's try to hit on you" variety.
Though my random-guys-hitting-on-me phase was way back on IRC, before dickpics were a thing, thankfully.
I think my first reaction was, "Why is their name Lizard-doggy, when they have a turtle as an avatar?" (then very quickly noticed the reversed Yggdrasil)
06:32
I worked that out reasonably quickly, but I still prefer the version where you got completely wrecked by a lizard.
@Miniman Now my instinctive visual is of Charlton Heston kneeling in the sand in front of the Statue of Liberty, yelling "WHY?!" in the newly adapted Planet of the Lizards.
@lisardggY I'd watch that movie.
lol
I would watch that movie at least twenty times
06:49
@Miniman If that's the case, why have I commented on my own posts 60 times?
@BESW Telling other commenters not to have discussions in comments, maybe?
07:05
@lisardggY I originally parsed it as "lizard ggy", took me a while before I realised it was Yggdrasil.
would there be anything wrong with linking to dnd-spells.com/spells in a comment on this answer? rpg.stackexchange.com/a/83651/28283

SevenSidedDieI don't offer a position on the ethics or legality of linking to "D&D Tools" – that's amply covered already, and (despite my frequent writing about the legal issues of copyright) my personal feelings about what should be the ethics and legality are complicated and aren't relevant. I'm unsure. there's every spell from the SCAG and EE books, so I'm gonna guess yes. Alright, better safe than sorry
07:25
There are SRD sites that have quite a few spells from the PHB. 5esrd.com for instance
dnd-spells is nice because you can add spells to your spellbook and have it print spellcards, which is really what I thought would be worth sharing.

Q: Nature vs nuture: How much of a race's abilities and stats are genetics vs. upbringing?

Jesse CohoonIf a person of X race were raised in Y (different) race's culture, would they "pick up" the stat bonuses, penalties and racial abilities of Y race? If so, how would one determine which bonuses, penalties, or racial abilities they get? If it's all genetics, how would they know how racial magi...

I'm uncomfortable with this question but I don't know why :os
Feels like there's something wrong with it, but can't put my finger on it
07:43
@BESW Narcissism?
@Wibbs I know what you mean, I wanted to VTC but couldn't find a reason.
It's maybe slightly opinion-based (but no more than many other accepted questions)
but fectin's answer gives RAW support, so there you go
It's going to be prone to real-world speculation rather than RPG expertise, but that's not a problem unless it gets really out of hand--I don't think the question is inviting that.
> Page 171 of the 3.5 Dungeon Master's Guide explains how to account for being raised by a different race: you make a new race. The example it gives is the "half-human;" a half-elf raised by elves instead of by humans.

Page 110 of the Player's Handbook discusses less systemic changes as part of the normal process of character customization, and gives an example of changes for a dwarf raised by humans.
08:01
@doppelgreener That's pretty much how I pronounce it in my head as well. Well, more "s" than "z".
@Wibbs It's reading concepts into the game which don't exist and are total nonsense to ask about, due to sheer lack of definition in the game. Is an elf's night vision genetics or upbringing? GM: "I don't know, why are you asking, are you taking a multi-racial feat to pick it up?" Player: "No I'm just asking for worldbuilding reasons." GM: "Well I haven't made any but I don't see why I couldn't."
I mean, all good intentions on the asker's part, but it winds up as a nonsense sort of question to ask about D&D.
@doppelgreener One of the comments links to theangrygm.com/why-race-isnt-broken which breaks races apart into race & culture (for PF)
based on PF's Advanced Race Guide
"Why Race Isn’t Broken in Pathfinder and How to Fix It" is a troubling start. Maybe it's tongue in cheek though idk.
PF is, generally speaking, built around a specific setting.
oh right i see it.
And yeah, the genetics vs upbringing thing is going to be about a setting as well.

Q: Typo in close reason

GlorfindelCurrently, one of the off-topic close reasons reads: Questions about playing video games and developing video game are off-topic here, but may be on-topic on Arqade and the Game Development Stack Exchange, respectively. Shouldn't that be changed to developing video games?

11:09
Actually, all three pictures are at least recognizable as such! As opposed to most of the crocodiles in @lisardggY's link.

Durer's Rhinoceros is another famous example of a drawing-by-hearsay that actually looks pretty similar to the source.
Ah, there was a sketch involved there too.

speaking of LARPing
this is a movie featuring, among others, Peter Dinklage, Summer Glau, and Danny Pudi, in a LARP that goes very wrong. It's great.

15:43
So, how goes?
I managed to leave work before 5pm today! (It's my choice when I leave, but usually I found a “tiny thing” around half 4 the last few days, and it wasn't that tiny, and when it was completed it was way 6.)
Also, my LARP book prop is approaching completion – some typesetting issues, and then I can see how to get it bound!
Also, I'll go bouldering today and playing board games tomorrow!
So, all in all very good!
Nice. Just about lunch time for myself here! Might grab shwarma not sure
As vegetarian, I am more a fan of falafel, but the stuff those two come with is very similar and nice!
Still need to find a good place for that in this city.
15:58
Man, I could never be a vegetarian. I'd miss meat, fish, etc... way too much. :(
You'd think that, but Mere Exposure is quite strong! I originally started when I began studying, because I didn't want to buy bad meat and good meat is expensive, so I ran without it most of the time.
I helps that I had a friend around the corner who mostly cooks vegetarian and comes up with amazing ideas for what to cook.
Went on to consciously deciding not to eat meat apart from special occasions.
Mostly for sustainability reasons, although for that argument to hold I should really look at what else I consume.
These days I still eat meat on special occasions, but I really don't like chicken and sausage-like things any more.
16:28
@Anaphory "Sausage Like Things" would be a good name for an album.
But without the hyphen more an anvant-garde philosophical punk band album.
It's more like I love my Portuguese dishes. Pretty much 3/4 of those dishes contain some form of meat. And if it doesn't have it, the taste is lacking.
@Francisco That's the big disadvantage we (quite a few vegetarian eaters among us) had in Portugal. In that case it's good to be flexible or also eat fish, but I don't think that's a diet I could live on for long.
@Anaphory Right. I'm digging the hyphen-less ambiguity between "cased meats that are similar to objects" and "cased meats are consumerists/hoarders."
17:25
@Anaphory You've been to Portugal?
@Francisco Last summer and the year before.
This year, the event hasn't been organized, so I should make sure to organize the organizers for next year.
17:41
Ah nice. Thoroughly enjoy the country the few times I've been.
Off to do stuff, see you!
