@lisardggY this sounds dumb to me
GM is the enemy is not how I learned to play
partially because my first main GM DID play in a group that seemed to have at least a partial "the GM is the enemy" mindset and he did not like that
It's less "this is a horrible idea" and more "this doesn't fit my vision of a TRUE DUNGEON CRAWL, but I know you still want it, so I'll humor you." Having read enough of the game before and after, it feels overwhelmingly like an attempt at humor. Just, you know, not amusing to me.
I feel like attempts at humor should be at a minimum, or in footnotes
make your game clearly understandable please
XD
Yeah. Like I said, it rubs me the wrong way.
I have not even read it and it sounds like it would rub me the wrong way too
Part of the deal with old school gaming is that:
- Ruleset is fast and loose and intended to be interpreted and balanced by the group.
- Players will want a bunch of other experiences attached to their game, because they see it as the RPG that can/should do anything. So, lots of house-rule type options are offered by the game.
- Warranty is waived on all parts of the design and playtesting is limited, and responsibility for performing the repair work and dealing with the fallout is placed on the player rather than the designer.
It's not a good way to handle game design, and by modern standards (and any other game industry's standards) is shabby and unacceptable.
00:09
yeah
imagine video games coming out chock full of all the bugs and expecting the consumer to fix his/her own copy
no thank you sir
you broke it in the first place, why should I buy it?
In the case of Donjon, the rules feel solid. I'd have to give it a try before I could say one or the other, but I could actually envision myself doing so. That's... more than I can say for a lot of other attempts to channel old school gaming. It's just the framing that bothers me.
I am glad the rules are solid. But yes, the framing makes me respond with "oh, it's like that is it" (where "that" is the above list)
What I mean is that I don't think it is like that (at least, that's not the impression I've gotten in reading through it). But I can see why that might be your reaction to the framing. Even if the game isn't doing that, it is channeling the aura.
00:26
Right, yes, we're on the same page.
either way, that is still a lack of clarity
if the frame and the picture don't match, why did you put that picture in that frame?
00:47
Yeah. The author has chosen to present the game this way, so it's on them if it turns people off/they get the wrong idea about it.
01:12
I'd never seen a baby moose before. Now I have. Aww.
D'aw.
(That one in the front reminds me of swiggity swooty.)
I was not familiar with swiggity swooty. Upon reading that, my mind went directly to Swiggity Swag (the Nightmare Stag). Combining the two concepts is... hilarious.
... yes it is :D
@Pixie I always think moose (mooses? meece?) look like their legs are too long for the rest of them. Whether they're cute little ones like this, or full-grown ones with huge antlers
01:27
Meese.
The plural of goose is geese, so the plural of moose is meese. [/totally made up]
I prefer moosen.
@doppelgreener The Engish language is incredibly logical, and you can safely assume that patterns are universal. [/shameless lying]
4
@Adeptus My favorite too-legs animal is the maned wolf.
@Pixie Ah, yes. That's from the time Evolution got a free Photoshop trial.
01:45
@Pixie That just doesn't look real. (I believe it is, but it just doesn't look it.)
Nature is sometimes very, very silly.
> “Any exciting weekend plans, evolution?”
“Oh, I don’t know. I’ll probably just stay in and put weird things on birds again.”
“Really? Don’t you do that like all the time?”
“Yeah, so? It’s not like this comb duck is going to festoon itself.”
02:30
@Pixie I gotta say though the maned wolf is pretty beautiful.
Yes! I love them.
@Pixie I feel great relaxation and solace knowing English plausibly started out as a pidgin (a mishmash language to help people at multilingual trade posts communicate) and that its standardisation a couple of hundred years ago was mostly the effort of one man over ten years doing more than one man should and being wildly incorrect and inaccurate for a lot of it based on methods that were terrible but we didn't know better at the time.
All of it, all of the English language, is terribly incorrect and silly and inconsistent and that's all it was ever meant to be because it is born as several languages in one and was only ever meant to be just good enough.
@ObliviousSage Genius!
So, David Tennant is doing the voice for a TMNT character.
The character appears to be --unusually for TMNT 2012-- not obviously based on any previous franchise material.
That doesn't seem right, so [researches]
Ahah. He's from an earlier Mirage Studios line that sorta merged with TMNT continuity when TMNT became their flagship.
02:51
Mornin'
03:10
I always thought Leonardo was a weird name
9 more days TILL I GET MY GOLD BABY
03:32
I always thought Sandwich was a tasty lunch too :(
I'm surprised you don't have a gold yet actually :P
I hate mondays, everywhere is quiet :(
I would, if I could actually listen to things at work :(
Thank's for trying though.
Oh, that was for the chat in general.
It is not for you, you inferior cannot-listen-to-things-at-work peasant.
Oh, that's reminds me. @doppelgreener Do you use RPOL at all?
@Nyoze I don't
I thought as much. Just thought I'd see if you wanted to look at the group I play MtG with at some point, since you were intrigued by the meta. I'm definitely a more aggressive player then some of them, though they do gang up on my lol.
03:55
I think I might try to host a Heroes unlimited game soon
I picked up the sourcebook ( the full 400+ page sourcebook ) at Second and Charles for 9 dollars
Heroes Unlimited?
Its a Palladium books system that has superheroes and whatnot and uses S.D.C
Ahh, interesting.
@Nyoze Sure! I just haven't heard of RPOL before you mentioned it a few days ago.
I think Im the one who mentioned it to Nyoze
04:00
Oh, well. There you have it :P I found RPOL here on RPG.SE actually.
Yeah, I think you might be.
Here's a Link if you want to take a look. It's a public game, so you can go through and read the threads if you want :)
I seeee... this sounds like a play by post chess game, but with Magic cards. o:
Exactly right!
Technically you can play any game on the internet with a random number generator
You just need to post all the cards in your deck, and roll random numbers to determine your draws
Theres a character creation method for RPGs that involves magic cards that I want to try
The game is fate-ey in that you have aspects, but you must get your aspects off of the magic cards (be inspired by them). you also take turns dealing cards from your hand to other players till you all have a set number of aspects
sounds interesting
04:15
@Tritium21 Sounds kinda like Magic: The Gathering Does A Penny For My Thoughts.
It MIGHT actually be a hack on APFMT
I will have to research this
I strongly doubt it.
But the idea of randomly distributing character inspiration created by the players is evocative.
this is someones homebrew that was 'published' at a con a few years ago
cues techno music MORTAL WOMBAT >.>
04:21
dundundundundundundundundundundundundundundundundundundundundundundundun TEST YOUR MIGHT
I'd be scared of that Wombat :(
Looks like a Combat Wombat
@Tritium21 I'd be interested in seeing that method. I like using cards for inspiration.
suddenly depressed about not having had a game session in 3 weeks and probably not having one for another 2
04:23
@Pixie I would run something now if i had any magic cards in this state
or any ccg cards
it does not have to be mtg
That can be cludged together to work
Golgari something or other
I usually use tarot cards for inspiration, I've used Magic cards, and now that I have a Clow deck, I need to give those a shot.
Shauku's Minion - Eww, my 2 most hated colours :\
04:27
My very first D&D game, one player used I-have-no-idea-what-d20-material to make a Phyrexian newt.
@doppelgreener I would pay twice that if it was an instant speed spell :(
...I have like 6 tarot decks and an oracle deck (I larped a witch....) I can use those!
Interrupt someone gravedigging? Yes please :P
@Tritium21 They are really fun. The art is evocative and meant to be interpreted.
I used tarot a few times for inspiration/props, but that was back when I knew a witch and could just borrow his cards.
@BESW I like this one! (Dash every turn.)
I mean, I still know him. But he's on the other side of the world so it's harder to borrow his cards.
@doppelgreener I was just thinking that. And cause it's back in your hand before upkeep, it's not damaging you.
04:30
My mom is a practicing wiccan. I actually know how to use the things. I dont believe in the stuff but i know how, and have the stuff
My mom's had a deck as long as I can recall. That may be part of why I'm so attached to them. I loved to look at them as a child. I have a couple of my own now, though.
Most of my decks have a theme... vampires, vampires, vampires.... can you tell what kind of game I was playing?
I have Stephanie Pui-mun Law's Shadowscapes tarot as well as the Lunatic Tarot. Oh, and a fairy oracle. Not a tarot, but in this case, just as good.
goes to get cards
For inspiration, this online spread generator is helpful if you don't have a deck, are too lazy to handle your deck, or just want to have interpretations right there.
04:39
If Ursula Vernon ever completes her wombat tarot...
Aaaah. Want.
She did about a half-dozen and then stopped. Years ago.
>.> I have a lovecraftian deck i forgot about
@BESW Aww. Ah well. There are already enough decks in the world calling my name.
I assume you've seen the Avengers tarot that made the tumblr rounds a while back?
04:43
I haven't, actually. I'm not into Avengers.
It's mostly beefcake.
I dunno
Capt. America could be Justice
I think The Hulk would be a better Strength
Ok, who are the lovers in this deck?
Vision + Scarlet Witch, maybe?
Bruce Banner is the Hermit.
04:50
Strength in tarot isn't traditionally Hulk-type strength.
Iron man and Black Iron man are the lovers
Hehehe
I don't remember his name
Warmachine
There we go
Warmachine
Ok, this is a slash fiction deck...
04:50
The Lovers, much more amusingly after Ultron came out, are Barton and Romanov.
Coulson's the Hierophant, Thor's the Son, Stark's the Magician, and Loki's the Devil.
And that's all of that deck I ever saw.
Heh. All ommiting the most important card in the deck...the fool
@BESW you made it sound like it's all beefcake, but so far it looks like it's only Steve Rogers who's had the bathroom around him explode while he was making his shield float, and a lion cub wandered in from a nearby zoo.
@Magician Are you asking for the beefcake?
At least this one makes some sense :P
04:54
Lol whaaat
And Loki's giving us an up-skirt.
Hm
I would think Loki would be the magician and the guy pulling the strings behind him would be the devil
look, they are giving stark abs. I dont think this is the most logical deck
See, Tony Stark working in his bathrobe, Loki messing with us and Thor swinging his hammer around all make some sense. Steve Rogers naked but for a shield and a... flag? and a lion is just a bit too confusing a scenario.
I require logical consistency in my pin-ups.
3
The lion is a reference. Scroll up for the Rider-Waite-Smith Strength. :P
04:59
This tarot was circulating just after the first Avengers film, when most folks who came into the Avengers fandom from the films didn't know yet that the franchise arc was being inspired by a 1991 comic plot.
This is garbage
None of my friend safaries are fire type
:I
@Sandwich Do you need something specific?
I have a pretty good collection of friend safaris. Mine's ghost, though (appropriately).
Not really I just wanted to explore a fire type safari
@Pixie Oh, I got that, it just doesn't fit the rest of the image. Never mind me...
I wouldnt mind knowing what mine is either
04:59
Then there's the Shonen Avengers Tarot.
@Sandwich I can add you and tell you sometime if you want. Can't at the moment, but remind me another day.
I'll just wait till you're free :>
Thanks though
Hmm.
(It's just that it would involve finding my 3DS, finding its charger, and also I'm supposed to be finishing my Pathfinder character. Character block has driven me to further procrastination.)
What kind of character?
05:02
If the Fool is the protagonist, then in the Marvel Cinematic Universe he's Tony Stark. But in his visualisation as the barefoot and ragged beggar, he's more appropriate as Bruce Banner.
The fool could also be Thor
He falls for that thing in the first movie
You know the thing
DANG QUICK BALLS ARE JUST TOO GOOD MAN
That's a very literal interpretation of the card based on name alone.
Oh
This fairy safari has togepi
Thats not bad
@Nyoze Mardu and Kolaghan were beautifully executed. Mardu had a whole bunch of abilities which rewarded casting cards, especially non-haste creatures, after combat, which made it pretty much a newbie guide on how to do what you should be doing anyway. And Kolaghan had a whole lot of ETB effects and Dash. It's sogood.
Maybe theres a misty around here too
05:09
ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/… cant find individual cards for this deck...
I've thrown like 20 quick balls so far and only one has failed on the first turn
@Sandwich Lucky! D: I'm trying to remember if I ever found an Eevee safari.
I have a crapton of eevees
Would you like one
Nah, it's the safari I need.
You want a shine
I see
05:10
Shinies and IVs. :P
My favorite pokemon is Jolteon
But its shiny is green (?!) so I don't know who had the design decision on that one
I've never seen lightning turn green before
@Tritium21 Nice! Shadowscapes tarot examples and Lunatic tarot examples (the latter is NSFW for revealing outfits).
I might actually pick up that second deck
It's a little hard to get a hold of, I think.
a deck from 2005 that is not even on amazon marketplace...hmm
05:21
@Tritium21 Tarot Garden lists it as "pending reorder" and offers a backorder option, but it doesn't list a price.
I will put that on my periodic check list... Im interested but not interested enough to blindly commit
I got mine from Miracle Tarot back when they had a site, but they don't have any right now. Could be worth poking them and seeing if they can get it if you're really motivated.
Oh this safari has Vivillion
Hmm. I think I'll roll up a random character based on Eclipse Phase's Transhuman over in Not A Bar. Feel free to join me. Unlike DeadEarth, there'll likely be a playable character at the end of it that'll actually make some sense. Maybe.
I shall definitely watch.
05:29
@Nyoze Oh, relevant thing: Kolaghan, the clan with Dash, also had Impact Tremors.
Oww.....
I almost want that on my Saproling rush deck lol
Except I'd need a way to get Red mana for it. Or just Primal Surge it out.
Yeah... No. Tabby tabby any day please :(
^ YES
05:45
We almost had an ostrich/shark chimera in last weekend's Umdaar game.
An ostrark.
I'm pretty sure that's something with the body and legs of an ostrich, a shark's tail, and a shark's head on an ostrich neck. And short little T-rex stubby wing/fin/arm things. With sharkskin instead of feathers.
A straight up shark on ostrich legs is my favorite mental image.
(As in Little Mermaid Except Shark. NSFW for blood and such.)
06:29
Morning.
Morning :)
I was doing a run in the battle tower and was on fight 18
Language.
Do a 2 for 2 trade and have a Jolteon left over
Her last pokemon is a RHYDON
06:31
Ground / Rock
I couldnt do anything to it and it OHKO's me with Earthquake
Question: Why would you even use Jolteon? :P
It has a very high speed stat, has a wide range of things it destroys on a regular basis
Has volt absorb
Ahh, new stuff, that's right :\
..... No reaction.
Its not my fault that the game pulled one of three pokemon out of its butt that actually I can do nothing agaisnt
Swampert, Rhyhorn, Rhydon
That's it
06:40
Either she is asleep, still rolling on the floor laughing hysterically, or searching a weapon to hunt me down.
@Sandwich This is why you need Dewgong :P
I was using Braixen, Jolteon, Gardevoir
The first cheese was from a Pachirisu who kept using swagger
I switched out like four times to get a turn that it didn't use swagger after I swapped in and then OHKO'd it with Psychic
Their second was a Purugly that used Fake out + Slash and got a critical
That took out my Braixen but my jolteon was able to kill it after paralyzing it with discharge
Then they pulled out a Rhydon that I had no answer for and died
My special sweepers were dead and Rhydon has lightning rod
Who on earth is Braixen?
Ahh, fire type.
06:46
@SPArchaeologist None of the above! (Distracted by my boyfriend linking me cute plushes.)
... I never noticed how much the Fierce Deity mask looks like Sesshoumaru.
@Sandwich Dewgong(Or other Ice/Water using pokemon), Heracross(Bugs are better then you think!) and then your pick of Fire/Rock type. That would get you through :)
Fire and/or rock can be swapped out for Combusken/Blaziken, though you'll be very weak to those sorts of moves that tend to take you out in one hit, (Earthquake, Hydropump, etc)
07:02
Braixen would fit too
Braixen is Fire/Psychic
Though Bug is already super effective against Psychic
Psychic beats out Fighting and Poison 2x
Yeah... I actually don't like psychic types very much :(
Psychic types are amazing special sweepers
Huh... Dewgong actually doesn't have as high Stats as I remember.
You just need something that can drop an Aurora Beam and a water attack of some description.
Vaporeon has Ice and Water moves
True, but she's just another eon :\
Still, as long as you've got something else to take out the Eletctric/Grass, she's a valid choice.
07:34
Earlier today I said I'd probably procrastinate on finishing my PF character all evening and do everything at 3 AM. I know myself... so well.
Ooh PF characters, one thing I actually know lol
Speaking of, I need to build my half-orc fighter :\
Though for this one, I struggle more with non-mechanical details. Mechanics have sorted themselves out pretty well.
That's... Where I always fall down :(
It's not always this hard, but I am only tentatively even settled on a gender.
I never noticed how chock full of super-situational bard spells UM is.
Horn of Pursuit. That's, um. Announce my presence to everything everywhere, eh?
Okay, Play Instrument is another such situational spell, and level 1, really? But... improvised instruments.
Poisoned Egg, which does exactly what it says on the tin. I... I love this spell. I'm laughing so hard right now.
It's from Inner Sea Gods so there's probably a context, but I don't want it. I don't need it. I love this spell.
08:03
Playing a Bow as a Harp...
What the? I mean, how? What?
/speechless.
It's magic.
So why do you need magic to drum on a barrel?
> (the reverted egg substance is harmless unless the poisoned creature is vulnerable to eggs)
... What?
I'm taking this as proof that such a thing is possible.
From now on, my Half-Orc fighter has a morbid fear of eggs.
Egg allergy.
I really want to take this spell. I'm not going to, but I really want to.
Why not? :(
I found the perfect feat :D Call Out
That is actually perfect. [adds to list of future considerations]
The character's background is nebulous right now, but I know that he studied at a dueling academy in Restov until something prompted him to go out into the world. I am still working out what, but it would have been something suitably overdramatic.
08:19
That'd actually be a pretty awesome weapon
What, eggs?
A bow strung with eight harp strings, and one bowstring
The arrows would be propelled by the bowstring, and the harp strings could be used to play bardic music
Faaancy.
Who needs a bow and a harp when you have a BOWHARP
That sounds spectacular.
I want one!
08:25
Damage would probably be the same as a longbow
But with added musical capability
Wait. You mean, Bards can be relevant?
/exile
[uses bowharp to fire egg poison arrows]
Begone with your Blasphemy! :P
How about as an added effect
You're able to continue playing bardic music while firing it
Since it is both a weapon and an instrument
AND ADD
AN ENCHANTED VERSION
That creates arrows made OF SOUND
When you pull the bowstring
Well...
For the first one, that's not unfeasible, since you get perform bards who just quiote stories while fighting all day.
As for arrows of sound... Just stick an enchantment of unending quiver(Blunt Arrows) and reflavour.
08:28
One of these days I will actually build Recorder Bard, Friend of Dragons.
No way man
If the arrows arent made of some kind of energy its not even cool
I would build my Dragon-taming druid, but... It doesn't actually do anything till about level 10 :(
Yes thats exactly what I was thinkin of Doppelgreener
That's actually my favorite kung fu movie
Those two blind brothers are awesome
08:29
@Sandwich No, just flavour the arrows to be made of energy, but from a mechanical standpoint, use unending quiver and blunt arrows to get the blungeoning effect that arrows of sound would do :P
(Kung Fu Hustle is an AMAZING movie. I suggest watching it with subtitles personally.)
I will one day :(
Its the best kung fu movie
I liked it way more than shaolin soccer
Like to a power of ten
Shaolin soccer tried (and failed imo) to do a love story
@Sandwich I'm not really sure they were aiming at the love story. The love story seemed like a cornerstone in the soccer parody the whole movie was.
It was an artistic misfire
Most people just wanted to see kung fu and soccer I would assume
The love story was tacked on at best.
08:48
@Sandwich Do you remember the Kung Fu movie about basketball?
I can't remember what it was called :(
I dont, I've never seen anything like that
Kung Fu Dunk (traditional Chinese: 功夫灌籃; simplified Chinese: 功夫灌篮; pinyin: Gōngfū Guànlán), also known by its former title Slam Dunk, is a 2008 Chinese-language action comedy film. It was directed by Taiwanese director Chu Yin-Ping and filmed in Taiwan and mainland China. The film was previously titled Slam Dunk, but later the title has been changed to avoid confusion with the Slam Dunk manga and anime series which it was roughly based on despite the film itself having no association whatsoever. The filming, however, conveyed a strong flavour of Hong Kong films, reminiscent of movies like Shaolin...
Good morning.
That was one of the best kung fu movies I remember seeing. That was years ago though, so it might be crap lol
Morning :)
Hello
08:52
[wave]
@BESW Do you play boardgames?
There's not a strong boardgame culture here, so I haven't had a lot of opportunity.
I recently played Betrayal at the House on the Hill for the first time.
that's the one with many different endgame "stories", where one of the players becomes the antagonist, isn't it?
Yeah.
Though there's not always an antagonist; we got one ending that didn't have an antagonist, and everyone went "boring! pick another!"
I wanted to ask you what do you think is the juiciest, most flavourful boardgame you know from FATE perspective.
Oh. I didn't know that. I never palyed it, only watched one game being concluded.
08:59
I'd love to have enough knowledge of boardgames to be able to answer that.
Hm. That's doesn't sound like a good question for SE format though.
And I haven't been able to find any official Fate boardgame.
Is Race to Adventure! not very Fate-y? It's a setting with Fate attachments.
It seems to be published by Evil Hat, but at the same time BGG hints at mediocrity.
Not to say that it's not worth playing - but rank in 3.5k range does not encourage a lot.
Well, regardless of quality, it's a 30-minute game and the reviews describe mechanics and play experiences that don't sound Fate-y.
09:17
There is another, Zeppelin Attack! but it's a deck-building game.
Hmm. I'm looking at Animate Rope right now. It has good flavor for my character and seems like it could be useful. Sadly, if you fail to entangle, it's not so useful and has eaten 2(?) turns. Might take it anyway. Anyone have experience with using it for trip/entangle purposes?
I generally used it for non-combat effects, myself.
Likewise. It's awesome for non-combat effects and flavor. I had a bard that used Animate Rope and Mage Hand almost exclusively.
Yeah, I was about to say the same thing.
If you're using it to trip, you'd almost be better off with a net.
That's what I figured. Alas. It's the combat usage that actually fits the character, and although it's somewhat useful outside of battle, well... mage hand, grappling hook.
09:29
The old "put googly eyes on it and pretend it's a snake" trick is fun.
"Have your rope roll an intimidate check against this stereotypical tomb explorer"
I feel like I could do a lot of the things I could do with it out of combat with Unseen Servant, too.
@Pixie Yeah, at this point it's a matter of fluff. I fluffed animate rope as apparently non-magical rope handling, and fluffed mage hand as apparently non-magical sonic bumping-things-around.
Understandable! I really like Unseen Servant, so I always try to think of what little things I can do with it. xD
@Pixie I always preferred real servants. Even if I have to burn a Leadership feat for it, being surrounded by a bunch of supporters, retainers and manservants is just fun.
09:40
Oh, we'll probably eventually have real servants, too. This is Kingmaker after all. :P But Unseen Servants are neat.
Also, you can have a retarded elven scullion/runner named Kunt to annoy your party's standing Mary Sue
In groups that were sub-optimal for my liking (meaning good enough to play in the lack of a better option, but not ones I'd like to stick to) I tended to pick servants as caricatures of other players with funny names and grotesquely exaggerated shortcomings. I abused the servant NPCs liberally, usually sticking to Lawful Neutral "His Lordship" PC point of view.
A'ight, I'm out for the night
Cya folks :)
Nighty night
