They starved
Its a brutal sandwich
Also
In real life Flint and steel is a shitty way to start a fire
A Magnifying glass is waaaay better
00:27
(Keith Flint, from the Prodigy, disagrees with you)
@Adeptus We should all talk a lot so he leaves our FOV ASAP.
Not a fan, I take it?
@Adeptus No.
That's just me, obviously.
00:45
@Sandwich you can use those in the dark though
oooh... Reaper are about to launch two Kickstarters: Bones III, and Legendary Encounters (pre-painted minis)
@Adeptus oh wow, they're doing an LE KS? dang
Yep, not sure when. They mention it in their email newsletter. I know the Bones one starts July 7
Super awkward moments - realising your 28 score answer contains details that are 100% wrong.
3
@Adeptus for some reason I seem to have been dropped from their mailing list (Been a while since my last order)....any chance they link an HTML version from the newsletter?
(and there is less hyperventalating on their forum than I'd expect to see with that announcement)
01:10
> Legendary Encounters Kickstarter

In 2007 we launched our first plastics line, Legendary Encounters. These were pre-painted, non random, non-blind miniatures packaged in our standard visible blisters. You could see what you were getting, and always get the right one. The only problem was, the process of making new molds was expensive, and we coudn't keep up.

In 2011, we used Kickstarter to successfully create the BONES line of miniatures, creating over a hundred new molds for over 300 new plastic figures. But in the back of our mind, we always knew that the Legendary Encounters pre-paint
no HTML version link that I can see
that's fine, Bryan used to post them in the forum, but hasn't in a while (he's a busy dude). Very cool to see that they are going to do that, they haven't been in regular stock since Bones 1 dropped
That sounds awesome - I would never buy prepainted miniatures, and I'm not a fan of the randomised booster pack system (because it's friggin stupid).
@Miniman LE isn't random
so it's non-rando plastic prepaints
@waxeagle That's why I said it sounds awesome.
ah, gotcha
yeah, not sure if I'd go in for prepaints or not, mooks are good painting practice
01:26
I have a love-hate relationship with painting minis. I kind of like it, but don't often have the time these days, and it can get frustrating trying to get the details how I want them. So, if I can get them already with a decent paint job, at a reasonable price, I'm interested.
(not that I really need more minis, we have a boxful already)
yeah, that's my thing with bones 3, I don't really need more (and though I only have a very small collection, it's all still white plastic), but I have some pretty big gabs that Bones 3 should be able to fille
@Miniman I once happened upon an old answer to find it was vacant of any genuine help for the asker. But it sounded smart and wise. I deleted it.
(In your case you might have a more recoverable answer, haha)
I dont have any minis
Aside from some old Fantasy Clix anyway
@Sandwich well then, keep an eye on Kickstarter in early July :)
you'll be able to purchase a great number of lovely high detail white plastic figs for about $100
(plus more for add ons)
noooo
be not seduced by the minis
there is no way to ever have enough minis
01:33
true, and if you finish painting all your minis, you die
you will have so many minis and then you'll have that encounter where you need five zombies and you only have four and you don't want to use the mole-rat or the hobo for the fifth.
same goes for dungeon tiles really
We just use quarters and pennies
dungeon tiles and minis are like the cursed sandwich of gaming props
the more you have, the more you need more
@doppelgreener Yeah, it was a few technically inaccurate details, it was overall useful and helpful.
(Or at least, I think so.)
@doppelgreener yeah, I'm torn on dungeon tiles. At least for now going to stick with the highly versatile tact-tiles i bought
01:39
@doppelgreener I bought the 2 easily accessible tilesets from Amazon, and I doubt I'll ever look for more.
Minis are a different issue though; I bought one box, found myself thoroughly disgusted with the booster pack thing, and swore never again.
I'm a pretty great artist
So I just have a really large gaming mat that I draw on with erase markers
@Sandwich I'm the exact opposite of that
@miniman Nobody's perfect
My flaw is that I'm too blunt
I'm abrasive, sometimes rude at times. But I can get a point across.
I have a no-nonsense DM style that just murders rules lawyers
And everyone is afraid to eat
Because of cursed sandwiches
Its fun to put curses on items that aren't normally cursed
Really catches people off guard
yeah, whereas I'm a "toss the DM screen in the garbage can" sort of guy, at least at a table
I'm pretty good at working with rules lawyers though ;) choices aren't binary, after all
@Miniman Which are those?
01:51
I'll rules lawyer sometimes if it works -- I'm just as happy rule0-ing things in some cases as I have a fairly strong sim-sense
I could use someone to DM my test 3.5e dungeon back at me though...;)
@doppelgreener I'd link, but I'm at work. If you search D&D tiles I think they're the only ones that come up, anyway.
Only on main Amazon, of course. Australian Amazon is as useless as always.
@Miniman There's an Australian Amazon?
@doppelgreener It's a lot like this:
Every country has an amazon in the civilized world doppel
@Miniman -- yeah, I know that feeling
02:00
@Sandwich I thought it was just the USA one and the UK one.
I just reminded myself of some characters from Endymion and went TT___TT a little on the inside
looks like there are 6 official ones: amazon.com/gp/entertainment/international
check that, that's just the entertainment sites
Australia... isn't on here?
they're in the footer on this page: amazon.com/gp/feature.html?docId=487250
> Your search "gurren lagann sound track" did not match any products.
the product currently being shipped to me from amazon.com
WELP. looks like Miniman's kinda right.
yep
i've run into some folks on gardening trying to use the germany site, with...less than stellar results
02:03
Wow there are only four results for Gurren Lagann at all. Two of them are puzzle games and another isn't even Gurren Lagann.
Wow.
Kind of sounds like the Magic item selection in a hamlet over there
The only Amazon I have experience with other than main Amazon is Amazon.co.jp. Never ordered, but I know how to browse it, kinda. Still annoyed I can't buy mp3s there, but I understand why. :v
@Sandwich i'm amusing myself thinking of these scenarios now.
02:19
@doppelgreener It has Kindle eBooks, and Android apps. That's it, I think.
@Sandwich -- xD yes
@Sandwich "Here's a magic stick. That'll be three quid." "That isn't a magic item!" "Sure it is. Fred threw it the other week, and it went way further than any other stick ever. It's gotta be magic." "That's because it's a javeline!" "Oh! That'd explain why it's so straight and pointy! Hey Fred! It was a javeline!" (down the street: "Is it a magic javeline?") "Apparently no! Welp, sorry for your trouble. Want a javeline? Two quid."
@doppelgreener -- LOL!
Actually we could probably have an entire Monty Python skit around this scenario.
Maybe not that precise one, but certainly trying to buy a magic item in a hamlet.
well, my EVE main can actually relate -- he once ran a constellation out of Fusion M ammo. :P
having to shoot the wrong ammo type for day-to-day PvE rather sucks.
02:23
@Shalvenay I am aware of what all these words mean but not when placed in this precise combination and order
@doppelgreener think of having to fight through DR on fey because no bowyer in the area had cold iron arrows for sale, despite them being normally in stock in most parts of the land
and your DM refuses to stop hurling evil fey at you
I'm suddenly reminded of the Holy Grail in Dexter's Laboratory.
@Pixie Oh? Do tell?
@Shalvenay ouch
@doppelgreener Not so much not-actually-magic as entirely-useless-magic. Let me see if I can find a clip...
Heh heh
You'll find a stick that can use spark once a day
02:28
@doppelgreener -- and the reason why they ran out is because you bought them all and they won't order any more
( Flint and steel )
despite your continued demand for them
Or perhaps a bone whistle that makes ghost sounds ( Like the spell Ghost sound )
worse yet, you bring down the instructions for making some, but you can't do anything with them because you don't have permission to use the smithy
Or a liquid that freezes things you pour it on
Or some silver tape you can use to bind two pieces of an item together that broke cleanly
02:31
Darn, I cannot find the clip. It's from the episode D&DD, which I highly recommend. Dexter is the worst kind of DM, so his friends vote that his sister Deedee run the game even though she knows nothing about it. Everyone has way more fun. :v
@Pixie Eeeexcellent
I'll try to find this one then.
The last boss was a pinata
It's one of my favorites.
They broke it and candy sprayed everywhere
Then they failed their fort save vs. cavities and BAM, no teeth
wow XD
brutal.
02:36
The last thing didnt happen
They didnt have saves
They just lost all their teeth
Well I'm going to bed, catch you guys tomorrow
02:48
@waxeagle I'm available for this Thursday's game, but only for two hours. Early flight Friday morning.
@Grubermensch Ok, I may end up cancelling work has the potential to get really hairy this week and I have family coming in town this weekend
at this point we're still go, but I'll know more tomorrow probably
@waxeagle Ok sounds good. It's best if I know by 3pm PST day of, so I don't miss the window for ordering dinner at work.
@Grubermensch gotcha, will have a decision one way or t'other by tomorrow afternoon.
Sounds good
03:04
got it @waxeagle
It's been a while since we last had a Cool RPG Stuff post, and I figure I should post one and get BESW to pin it when he's next here. Is there any Cool Stuff going on the RPG-sphere?
@doppelgreener not sure, the thing I'm most immediately aware of doens't start for a few weeks yet.
I'm not in any KS right now, though there is one my wife is in that looks really cool (but it's more ARG than RPG)
the first round of errata for 5e came out...don't know if that's relevant
@waxeagle that is definitely news at least!
just pinned Brian's good bye message, feel like that should stick longer than a simple star.
@waxeagle i agree :)
[bangs some pots and pans] @Shalvenay @Gruber @Sandwich @Pixie @adeptus @Miniman Is there stuff going on in the RPG-o-sphere that we should stick up here pinned?
03:16
@doppelgreener Not that I know of, but I keep a very close eye on D&D 5e news and almost no eye whatsoever on other RPG news.
Patreons and other things might also count.
@doppelgreener Can't think of anything, but I'll be sure to mention it if come across something of interest.
We might just be having a slow news ... month
Welp, there's no excitement this month, everyone go home
Oh, there is the Part Time Gods of Fate kickstarter.
03:26
They have their beta out already, but I haven't gotten a chance to go through it yet.
I'm going to try this out.
It definitely looks like something I'd be interested in.
I was poking around Thingiverse, and [flails]. 3D printed ball-jointed dragon.
@Pixie is this.... a 3D printer blueprint archive?
It's so pretty, too. I can hardly believe they're giving this design away instead of selling it.
@doppelgreener It is! I just stumbled upon it.
This is beautiful.
03:35
I found it when I discovered these miniatures.
@Pixie there needs to be a "miniatures" category in there... alas, just collections
@doppelgreener Definitely.
I need to look into getting that dragon printed, though. I've never done or had done any 3D printing before, but I'm in love with it.

[Thingiverse](http://www.thingiverse.com/search?q=miniature "3D models ready for printing");
That might do for now.
@wax Could I have a pin?
the third one is not strictly RPG except for those of us that have 3D printers. (Not me!) But I am clearly corrupted by power.
I think it's of interest, given that there seem to be a good number of minis available.
03:40
@doppelgreener Your link formatting looks a little wacky.
@Miniman it'll work out in the sidebar.
@doppelgreener Ah, right.
04:05
@doppelgreener Well, the afore-mentioned Reaper Minis KS's aren't active yet... Oh! Free RPG Day may be worth mentioning - it's this Saturday. freerpgday.com
@Adeptus Man! No one near me participating. :c
04:30
@Pixie I just found an RPG store I didn't know about!
@Miniman Oh?
Wait, I misread that as "an RPG I didn't know about." xD
04:54
@Pixie Tell me about it. My nearest participating store is ~8-10 hours drive away. Don't think I'm going that far :P
@Adeptus I think mine is around 100 miles off.

@doppelgreener Hmwha?

@BESW pin! ^
pl0x
You linked... poorly.
[feels vindicated]
I did.
YES.
perfect. it all fit.
and only just.
Wait 'til the "time ago" bit gets a little longer.
05:46
@Miniman i copied and pasted the original with its truncated links instead of pasting in the full ones. it was fine originally i think. no vindication for you! [revokes]
@BESW NOOOO
@BESW Also look at that part time gods thing! I want to try out this part time gods thing. (I have not read the PDF yet. But I will.)
Remind me when I'm back on Guam in a couple days, eh?
I'm not quite in that kind of brain right now.
"How long can I bless werewolf urine for?" -@UrsulaV #dnd
@BESW Sure!
Thanks.
@BESW This is a deeply important question.
This trip has been awesome, and my brains are in unusual spaces. It's probably good overall, though.
05:51
Awesome. :)
@RebelsHeart @UrsulaV I suspect the answer is "as long as you dare"
@BESW excellent answer
@BESW Fill me in later if we bump into each other at a good time. (I finish up work in an hour or two.)

1 hour later…
07:07
Do we have a conveient meta question/answer explaining why artificially broadening the scope of a question is generally a bad idea and invites poor quality answers?
@Wibbs We do, but it wasn't well received.
Hmmm. The issue comes up to often, it would be helpful to be able to link to one in comments

Q: Should I use a narrow system tag, or go broad if possible and use system-agnostic?

doppelgreenerI am playing D&D 4e and I have a question about how I can create an excellent pirate adventure. Since people have pirate adventures in other RPG systems, and Stack Exchange is about useful answers, should I tag my question with dungeons-and-dragons or maybe system-agnostic in order to cover a wid...

@Miniman see what you mean:os
not very conclusive or clear
@Wibbs Interesting...I thought it was quite a good reference question to have, when I said it wasn't well received I didn't mean me.
07:12
I guess it seems a very, very long winded way of saying something pretty straightforward and simple
@Wibbs Yeah, but imagine how "Stop tagging when it isn't really!" would have been received.
lol, fair enough

1 hour later…
08:17
@Wibbs I'd be interested to see your answer.
@Miniman my pet peeve is treating the system agonistic tag as a hard override. System matters.
@Miniman as for this question I was never very satisfied by it. It didn't have the reception or results I wanted. It is very hard to say anything about how the tag gets used or identify what it is about it that is genuinely a problem.
Wow, I just read that unarmed strike fallout thing. So unarmed strikes aren't listed as weapons and get used instead of weapons, but they can be used in weapon attacks, despite not being weapons. What the heck.
08:41
@doppelgreener It's been pretty much covered by a combination of the other answers tbh, so I'm not going to add it
09:10
@Wibbs okay.
I think articulating my answer gave me a headache.
This is so difficult to express.
Let alone eloquently.
09:25
indeed
my answer would have boiled down to 'if you signpost the dangers and give the PCs the opportunity to detect them and react then fine. If its a complete suprise with no opportunity for PCs to do anything then really not'
yeah that seems to be more or less what the first answer's getting at

1 hour later…
10:35
@Wibbs by the way, I have some concern I might've lead you astray with my comment, and lead you to not post an answer - then I went and deleted my comment and posted one myself, and now you have decided not to. I apologise if it's as I imagine it.
10:49
@doppelgreener no, not at all :)
I actually don't have all that much experience of running sandbox style games, so I was in two minds as to whether to post anyway
Alright, that is reassuring to hear from you.

Q: Any objections to burninating the [random] tag?

doppelgreenerUnless anyone has any objections or wants to salvage/synonym random somehow, I'm going to burninate it in a couple of days. Randomness itself doesn't seem like a useful area of expertise, and the tag isn't well-used. It gets used beside generator and encounter-tables a lot and in a couple of que...

there is a random tag?
that seems counter to site goals
12:32
it does seem to have issues!
I mean, it seems this site's whole ethos is about being clear about what your question actually is, ditto for answers
putting a tag called "random" seems like it just doesn't fit
well, if it's intended to be a tag about... questions relating to random numbers or something similar?
that makes a certain amount of sense then I guess
12:37
@Magician you and your foul magics
You seem to be confusing tags with hashtags.
A few days ago I was at a train station and saw an advertisement for a new network for social media, which appeared to focus upon hashtags, except they used the ~ symbol rather than the # symbol.
It called them "dashtags".
...
A new social media network. They're going to have their hopes dashed.
i dearly hope they never catch on, otherwise I'll have to start referring to dashes as tildes just to restore some level of balance to the world.
12:43
I have enough trouble understanding why anyone needs to mark something with a hashtag to begin with
it is not clarifying anything
I think it originated as a "hack" on twitter, where you could search for other people using the same hashtag posting on the same topic.
And then kind of morphed into #lol #blessed #wassup #highlyoriginalhashtaggoeshere we see nowadays. Happens to tags in blogs too, sometimes.
Yeah, it's just a generic marker for, well, tagging words. In the same way as our question tags work. Just with more interruptory punctuation and needing to fit into a 148-character limit with no metadata fields.
I understand how it happened more or less
I just kinda hate it a bit
it's literally useless to me, and obnoxious to a certain extent
I've used it to mark my tweets about #DnD, for instance, that does actually get some extra eyes on it.
not that I want to just go throwing my weight around over it, it's just my opinion and others are also entitled to their own
@Magician this use of it is reasonable
12:47
If it makes you feel any better about the state of the world, I know people who non-ironically say "hashtag" in real life before they say random words.
the thing is that now I see and hear people saying it everywhere
even when there is no point
@acomputingpun hashtag yolo is my post-death metal band name.
@acomputingpun I am not sure that makes me feel better honestly XD
Impressive. Most people only manage to have metal bands before they die.
Metal doesn't die. It just goes on tour in Hell.
12:51
(Said people also make a sort of # symbol by crossing the first two fingers on each hand while they say it. It's sort of like a gang sign but for pretentious people.)
Entirely unrelated to the previous discussion, I saw Jurassic World today, and kiiind of want to run a raptor apocalypse game now. It's like zombie apocalypse, but with raptors.
3
I checked and of course there's an ebook about it.
13:30
@Magician I get that feeling so often.. I see a thing, and I don't necessarily care about it, but I really start feeling like running something based on it
And I'm back from my long rest
Someone must've cast deep slumber on me because that was some good sleep
@AlexMitan did you ever figure out what your player wanted with their techno mage/artificer build and/or was anyone else on the site able to help you
@JoshuaAslanSmith Aw, nice that you remembered... I asked the player more and apparently he refined the concept into something else entirely
based on a Magic TCG card
This beastly thing
So his character's going to be an abomination-like creature that can rip off aspects from things they kill and attach them to himself
I figured it's pretty easy to do that, giving him an Assimilation Pool of up to 3 aspects he can absorb from others, maybe limiting his base aspects to reflect that he has little strength and identity apart from that which he absorbs
It's killing me that we can only really play next month, after our exams, because I really want to see this in action
I know Fate is meant to have character creation on-the-spot, but these people are serious video- and card-(MtG) gamers
I want to hear their awesome ideas beforehand so I can think of game extras in time
gathering the magic, lol
Nah its totally fine to stretch it out, especially if its your first time (or one of your first times) GMing for it as its a very GM driven system in some regards
13:46
Our only other experience was D&D 5e, I doubt that was less GM-driven
Honestly I felt like I did all of the work
So, yes you do all the work, but there are a lot of rules to refer to and rely on
whereas there are more like guidelines and core concepts for fate and you have to make judgement calls a lot more
Yeah but I'd rather work on rulings and judgment calls rather than doing all the plot-work and prep
One is game design, another is studying
Don't hesitate to devolve responsibility out to players as much as possible in a system like 5e though. you have to run all the monsters and handle rules questions, players should be doing other things like keeping track of their own stats and inventory and xp and imitative.
hah yes
True, but I'm not GMing that again any time soon
Failure with it is what lead me to look for something else, and out of the dozens and dozens of RPGs I've looked into Fate seems to be the best candidate, with Dungeon World and TavernTales close behind
dungeon world is pretty awesome
its my favorite system
I like fate
but I feel like fate's open-ended ness can leave newer players at a loss of what to do
whereas DWs very D&D inspired world feel helps to move things along.
13:57
I've read an unhealthy amount of Fate stuff though, we're going with it, since it seems to be able to do the most stuff most easily
And I just really really like it, you know
yes fate is more generic if that makes sense, not knocking it, just more ability to do any kind of story
oh totally go with whatever works bets for you
14:53
I may be a bit worried about some things, but we'll see... I hope my group has the patience

1 hour later…
15:55
Nintendo Press conference about to start

4 hours later…
20:20
So how's everyone

1 hour later…
21:25
The chat has gotten much quieter recently.
22:16
How short is "recently"?
Since I came
And turned the world upside down
@acomputingpun Last few weeks, I'd say. When summer started in the northern hemisphere.
Summer suuuuucks
I see. That was also about when I started visiting chat, so it makes sense that I don't notice the difference.
(Oh, it happened at exactly the same time as I showed up? How convenient. Suspiciously convenient...)
It also happened to coincide with @BESW going on a trip and thus being in chat much less.
22:26
BESW was around yesterday
22:44
So do any of the regulars here host weekly pathfinder games?
Online or in person?
(No to both for me. Just clarifying to make conversation)
Online
In like roll20 or in a chatroom here
