@waxeagle That is the DMG, Player book, and bestiary?
you can get all 3 core books for right at $100
@Aaron yes
yeah
36, 29, 31
you can really just play with the pHB
pick up the other 2 as you go
Ok. I might get them when I get my taxes back.
PHB has a bunch of monsters and a good bit of items in it
really if you want to get started, you can get fully spun up with just basic
(which is free)
19:01
I will probably take a closer look at basic and listen to some 5e podcasts of games.
it's very light on character options though, which makes the PHB a great first pickup
yeah Id idnt like pure basic since it leaves you with the least interesting if not least optimized version of the "core" classes in some respects
Any recommended listens that you guys know of? I like to listen to the group play instead of read what the group did as reading doesn't really show if they had to stop and look up a rule or do some crazy calculation ect.
I know 5e shouldn't have crazy calculations though so I'm not too worried about that aspect
@Aaron WOTC rodney is running regular games. If you check out WOTC_DND's twitch.tv feed that's a good start
@waxeagle Ok.
19:03
also there is always the aquisitions inc games
I'm not too sure of what non-WOTC produced games are out there right now though
Has Acquisitions inc. done any 5e videos yet?
@DavidWilkins Definitely with the playtest, not 100% sure they've done final release
coolbeans
@waxeagle none for the release
there is a stupid amount of people doing videos or audio only 5e podcasts though
it became a thing
not surprised. I've looked into doing it for our game, but IMO the tech just isn't there for what I want to do yet.
(that's not to say it isn't possible it's just not as easy as I want it to be)
@JoshuaAslanSmith they Pax 2014 games says it was done in sept 2014, should be release?
19:13
@waxeagle thats more because everyone doesnt have great mics than anything else I feel
Which I understand
because not everyone has been an online gamer for over a decade
to me its like baseline, infrastructure for a PC
I used to get compliments in grad class work groups for how clear my audio was, and Id be like, its because I have a 50 dollar head set and a mobo that is built for it.
at the same time I havent had a webcam since the 90s which a lot of other people think is crazy
@JoshuaAslanSmith Any of the podcasts on grooveshark?
@JoshuaAslanSmith I'm done with webcams. if I want to cam chat (which I do semiregularly), I want to do it on a device rather than a computer
it's a big part of the reason I'm really happy with my ipad mini
(which btw, managed to break another screen on that this past week :()
(this time the blame is squarely on the 2 yr old though)
19:29
lol
I sorta might get it for telecommuting business meeting things but me seeing your face from a bad angle while talking/roleplaying generally wont help
walk out of the room for 2 minutes...boys briefly fighting over it. Wife brings ipad back "hey, did you know the screen is broken" "um no, it was fine five minutes ago" collective sigh
When center screen inset cameras become standard Ill use video chat
@JoshuaAslanSmith I use it to talk to my folks. Good way for them to get to see/interact with the kids
I mean we do skype video calls w/ the kindle to talk to holly's family at holidays
(thankfully ipad screens are dirt cheap)
19:31
indeed
yeah, I don't see using it for day to day coms anytime soon
@aaron any reason you are looking for audio playthroughs though? I mean it sounds like D&D mechanically
and I've gotten pretty good at microelectronics repairs over the past few months :(
Inspiration and by extension advantage are the only big changes
tied into that is the flaws, traits, bonds, and ideals system to lend more character tie-in with the mechanical system
but beyond that the actual play of the game (vs optimization and character building and encounter building) woudl sound extremely similar to a 3.5 or PF game of course with changes for different DMs/player groups of course.
The biggest thing I would say is unlearning what you have learned with regards to D&D
as many things are dropped or made accessible only through feats or have the same name but function very differently
@JoshuaAslanSmith Cause I can listen to them at work XD
19:36
which I get
Im just saying as an experienced RPG player and D&D system utilizer (pathfinder) you might not actually get that much out of it vs if you were trying to learn Fate or Dungeon World as they funtion very diffferntly.
I'm not expecting to learn a lot but it could give me a small idea of the differences.
I think I just found all of the lord of the rings books on grooveshark
The guys profile is rob inglis
19:44
there was a good audio book read by ian holm (bilbo in the movies)
19:58
@waxeagle That's what we do on google hangouts with my folks, so they get to see the boy on a regular basis.
yeah, works out well
20:11
Why does the chat history show times in GMT, but live chat shows times in my timezone
I nearly had a brainquake when I was re-reading my history
@DavidWilkins Chat history goes off of time stamped logs, and everything in SE is calculated GMT. Makes it odd figuring out when to log in if going for Enthusiast/Fanatic badges.
Live chat it calculates for convenience.
Also, why are there two dead tags on the sidebar..."pen-and-paper" and "tables"
I'm bored. Sorry :p
dangit. Now I have jolly rancher stuck in my teeth :(
You really shouldn't chew those, especially if you have dental fillings
It's one of the sticks, I was trying to just snap off a piece.
20:25
sticks?
Yeah, wider, longer and flatter than the traditional. Probably about same amount of substance, but flattened out.
@johnp feature request for a local time stamp option when viewing logs might be worth mosting on SO meta

Q: Is there a way to remove dead tags from the Main Chat room tags?

David Wilkinsthe tables and pen-and-paper tags appear in the list of room tags for the main chat, but they are dead links because those tags don't currently exist. Can they be changed, or are we stuck with them?

A: Is there a way to remove dead tags from the Main Chat room tags?

BESWSome of those tags never existed on the main site. They're up there as a clue to new users what our chat is really about. We've got one of the most active chat on the Stack. This means that people from any Stack Exchange site, when they look for chat rooms, will see ours near the top. We semi-re...

Hey.
so do you know the correct pronunciation of yaun-ti/
Hmm. Let me double-check my sources.
Okay, so there doesn't seem to be a really definitive answer.
I prefer yawn-TEE, but with the "yawn" part drawn out a bit into something almost like a two-tone syllable.
Yawn-tee in some inflection is supported by, among other things, Neverwinter Nights.
However, at least one Wizards employee is on the record saying it's yoo-awn-tee (inflection unknown).
I conclude that that name is not easily pronounceable by humanoid tongues.
And then, amusingly, there's this.
@BESW HEhehe. The third one sounds funny
21:27
I'm reminded of how Ask Lovecraft pronounces "Nyarlathotep."
@BESW Oh god the third one trying to pronounce that word sounds demonic or something. Nyarlathotep
@besw that covers what both I and @waxeagle suggested earlier
gnight
@Aaron I feel the name should be pronounced as if it were something run backwards through a tape player.
21:44
@BESW how does Ask Lovecraft pronounce Nyarlathotep?
I couldn't quickly track down a link.
I have just added Lovecraft and Nyarlathotep to my phone's dictionary, and feel as though it is now a matter of time until it begins sprouting tendrils.
3
Just don't add Hastur three times.
Don't worry I can only add it once.
Except that it might require me to add Hastur separately with an uppercase and lowercase H... And then there's the time I'll accidentally write that with an uppercase A and it'll add that too....
I'm doomed!
Wait, I know where I can find it!
[digs]
21:56
Ghost town here in downtown Portland
All of the snow
Way late to weigh in, but I've always pronounced it "ywan-ti".
Hastur? Hastur who?
How about eee juan tee
22:12
On a side note, there is a heavy metal band with a decided D&D type theme called "Necrogoblicon"
I prefer to write that stuff in IPA: [juʌn'tiː] (that's how I read it as German, and it still makes sense to me as pronounciation)
I I think "you-AWN--tee" feels the most natural, but have no idea how to put that in IPA
[ju'ɔntiː]? Or how do you pronounce awn?
Should be more "on" than "awn"
"ahn"
22:21
@DavidWilkins Actually, that's what I did with [ju'ɔntiː], otherwise the /ɔ/ would be long: [ju'ɔːntiː] (maybe there's still other differences, in backness or something)
flatter sound than awn
yes. Thanks @JohnP
I think it's useful to remember the linguistic and cultural context of the original creators: they were building mostly on American pop culture references.
That's the ʌ
So spellings should be taken as American-style transliterations.
22:22
That's why a stress on the second syllable doesn't make sense to me.
So someone posted this question, then 3 minutes later someone posted this question, but I can't VTC.
thats almost the phonetic pronunciation
“Stress at the beginning a word, and I'm giving you an new word start, look, with the hyphen!”
That makes sense @Anaphory. "YOU-ahn.-tee"?
@BESW dang, that is great.
and i get that played-backward-through-a-tape thing you mean now :)
22:26
? "Eat now"
@BESW so, yoo-ahn-tee?
(personally I always pronounced it YOO-ahn-TEE)
@doppelgreener No, American pronunciations rarely separate out adjacent vowels.
If I was going to be aggressively American, it'd be Yawnty.
but... but...
I don't understand how yuan turns into yawn
there's two vowels there!
i could understand yaun into yawn
22:28
Same here.
Same way Juan rhymes with yawn.
Ow, does it? Really? Ow.
Stretchy
It's weird enough that Sean rhymes with yawn. But Juan?
Isn't Juan pronounced ywan?
22:30
Spanish heritage on that one: it's pronounced HWawn.
Wan is how I pronounce juan
But yes in spanish it is closer to hwahn
[xʊ'ʌn]?
However, if yuan-ti is drawing from the Chinese, it's Yoo-ann.
It looks at least as if it was supposed to invoke such a heritage.
Because of the -ua- weirdness.
22:34
@BESW ok, sure, but then that's another language's pronunciation rules applying, not American English pronunciation.
@doppelgreener You may have forgotten that English is mostly a collection of other languages' conventions. We have no solid idea what the yuan-ti are intended to evoke, so it's all purely speculative.
@memescientist Back when I ran map-and-mini style systems, I hungered for a setup like that. Though back projection from a device beneath the table is another option.
Is there a way to get an accurate timestamp from when a question was posted?
@DuckTapeAl Check out the revisions.
And if there are no edits on the question?
@memescientist That's badazz.
I wants
22:39
@DuckTapeAl http://rpg.stackexchange.com/posts/ question code number /revisions
So you want http://rpg.stackexchange.com/posts/56203/revisions
Sweet. Thaks!
Hmm. That's giving me the "27 minutes ago" thing, but not an actual time.
So...you both posted the same question, and you both posted basically the same answer... so what is the debate?
And his is registering 3 minutes after yours. Consistently.
I posted the opposite answer.
Which matches this:
19 mins ago, by Miniman
So someone posted this question, then 3 minutes later someone posted this question, but I can't VTC.
22:43
Oh, duh. I think I'm having a stupid day. I thought that, since his "posted X minutes ago" thing had a lower number than mine, that his question was posted before mine.
Lol.
Oh well.
@BESW Sure, but it has conventions of its own. In Australian English I'd pronounce it 'yoo-ahn', I'm just trying to wrap my head around why in American English it would be pronounced 'yawn'.
I do understand it could be intended to be pronounced any number of ways, including the Spanish way, though I'm not trying to understand Spanish pronunciation. ;)
@DuckTapeAl I answered. You're right on the hardness applies, it's just a bit of ambiguity in the interpretation of the English.
@BESW Are you sure that'd be pronounced "yawn"? I've only ever heard that word pronounced "yoo-ahn" or "yoo-ann".
Ooh, looks like there was a note about that question in the FAQ.
@DuckTapeAl which question, the pronunciation?
@doppelgreener No, the hardness
22:55
The hardness question.
23:13
You're a hardness question!
23:43
Random thought... In subtitles, they often end a sentence with a bracketed exclamation mark to show something is said sarcastically. It'd be great if this was more widely adopted in text-based communication.
That's an awful idea (!)
It would be a shame if we could suddenly use irony in text communication (!)
Where would all the arguments be for which we love the Internetz and which we so highly miss here on stackexchange (!)
(I mean, apart from people just being generally better at deescalating in face-to-face communication than in far-distance impersonal text-only.)
@Adeptus -- yeah, that sounds helpful xD
