8:19 AM
@BESW that is true, and battlestar galactica did something similar
though i still totally like it being short
this is not as opposed to providing summaries, this is as opposed to other shows providing a 90 to 150 second thing that gives you variously either a bit of an idea or no idea about the show

Yeah, hence "high-quality."

yus
i just mean i'm not comparing to that standard
that'd be good too! i just like that it is good in this way

Aye.
@doppelgreener Care to give a look-see at my extra-explainy snorkel paragraph?
> And then --more importantly-- **he'll suffocate**, because a three-foot-long straw is too long for him to get fresh air to breathe.
> Even unburied (and don't underestimate the weight of dirt on his lungs!), his lungs can't draw in a sufficient volume of air to draw in all the stale air in the straw *and* get enough fresh air from the surface to give him the oxygen he needs (by rough math, with a thumb-width tube only 2/5 of each breath will be fresh air). Widening the tube would increase the tube's volume and make the problem worse.
*lungs can't hold a sufficient volume

9:08 AM
@BESW Might be worthwhile to link to the tidal volume Wikipedia article and provide the numbers - 500ml for a breath, 300ml for the tube.
Then the people who don't believe it can go verify the numbers.
The guy is sleeping, he'll be breathing even less than normal due to being at rest.
(It was stunning even to me what the numbers were, and I was already fairly sure it would be a problem)

(Shouldn't Mythbusters have done this long ago? I don't watch Mythbusters.)
@Magician Hi!
@doppelgreener You realise that using tidal volume mechanics to answer an RPG question means we both get to punch another hole on our Incurable Geek membership cards, right?

9:46 AM
@BESW i don't know about you but i don't have any card left to punch
it's basically all been obliterated

@doppelgreener Silly. When the card's all punched out, you redeem it for a free New Pop Culture Obsession.
Then they give you a new card.

@BESW Oh. I guess I should've done that before it was reduced to a pile of very fine triangles.

Yes.

The title on your answer keeps making me giggle each time I see it.

Hee, I'm glad you like it.
Of course, the entire suffocation thing becomes irrelephant the instant 5e publishes its equivalent of the bottle of air.
(Although the bottle of air itself would not be useful as it requires a conscious action to use each time, it's likely 5e would not be so strict.)
On an entirely different note...
[ponders what system to run that in]
@GraceNote [wave] I've noticed you're lurking around here lately. I hope we're suitably entertaining.

10:10 AM
@BESW Argh! When I'm watching shows like Avatar now, I'm plotting out in my head all the Fate-y bits. Like the fire nation guardian of Roku's temple creating a Secret Door aspect via some means, that just so happens to be right there!

Heheh.
I was sitting there in Guardians of the Galaxy going "okay, so that's what a compel on your high concept looks like."

@BESW LOL. Yes!

I have been doing that with shows and books and video games every once in a while since starting Fate

10:47 AM

11:22 AM
Aaand I found Tony Stark's Trouble aspect:

1:17 PM
Hello hello, everyone.

good morning

It is indeed.

1:31 PM
@BESW Hoping it publishes the equivalent of deep breath. Spell, lasts 12 hours. You take a deep breath. It's enough for the duration.

2:00 PM
And I have an eternal wand of it [giggles]

2:10 PM
hi all
anyone knows to link to the dnd compendium
its kind of hard to find with that new webpage from wotc

2:48 PM
@BESW I am inactive for 2 days and you go and change your profile picture?

@InbarRose XD

Yes, that was very sneaky of him.

3:09 PM
Passed out...
Didn't finish...
Excuse me while I bash my face into the wall for a bit...

1 hour later…
4:28 PM
Anyone wanna give me some advice who has a cursory knowledge of 3.5? (no need for expert advice here, just a bit of knowledge of the system, everything I'm referring to is from the SRD)

Shoot.

4:50 PM
Alright, so I have 28k to mess with to give this magic lance whatever I want out of the item special powers.
It's a +3 starmetal magic lance. It's also intelligent
I'm using 1500 or 3k to give it a way to move on its own (probably) these are house ruled prices to give it the Psicrystal Self Propulsion or Flight abilities (self propulsion is 30ft base land and 20 ft climb via ectoplasmic legs, flight is 50ft of poor maneuverability iirc).
So now, my decision is how to spend about 25k on intelligent item special powers and weapon abilities. Note: I have to avoid any + bonus weapon abilities because that'd be an immediate 12k for a new +1...
I want to make this as useful as possible without being a weapon, because noone uses lances... So yeah. I was thinking detection abilities out the ass.

By "useful", I assume you mean useful for your character.
Anything specific that your character focuses on?

I mean useful in general.
Useful to my character would be nice too but IDK how likely it'll be that he'll actually have it/use it/keep it.

Ok. What are you creating it for, then?
Is it a focus of a plot of an adventure?

My character is a stealthy archer. Bigtime. Like, freaking ninja. Massive acrobatics/stealth/etc. Stacking Skirmish and Sneak Attack as well.
The DM granted it to us, and gave me the "privilege" of building it. Backstory, personality, alignment and all.
He waived the cost for a +3 starmetal lance, and waived the cost for the 17/17/10, Darkvision 120, speech, telepathy, sight, hearing rank intelligent item.
percentile roll 98 on the table.
He's just charging me for any additional abilities I give it via intelligent item powers (any amount of any rank allowed within the cost) and any other magic weapon powers I give it.

Ok, what's the item's backstory?

4:57 PM
I'm going to try to convince him to allow me to give it a once-off per wielder transformation to the new wielder's preferred weapon, but it's unlikely that'll happen.

Also, does it have a purpose?

No purpose as per the mechanic...
But I was going with (if I can get it to do what I want with the DM, who isn't responding to msgs all week...this is due by 5est today btw, so in 4 hrs)
I was going with a Longinus/Jesus story essentially.

The lance killed someone meaningful?

Soldier to a current lawful regime killed a heretical profit to a "new god" at the time, exacts are rather sketchy because IDK this setting's deity timeline, and I'm going WAY back like this.

This was a while ago?

5:00 PM
I was going with the personalities merged to a certain extent, combining the "blood of christ" with the soldier's death and etc (some inspiration from NWoD here, the Fateweaver weapon in Armory Reload says something like noone knows what happened to Longinus, he could have been killed, or cleansed, or tainted, or something else)

I'm guessing.
The weapon could be repentant of its role in killing the prophet.
Perhaps the weapon has converted to the new religion.

The "purpose" was something along the lines of "Kill heretics/Unlawful beings" Essentially, anything Chaotic aligned and etc. I was going to go with the personality changes to match a wielder (and alignment) but is always lawful

Ah, ok. The other way around.
It's dedicated to spreading the cause of law. That's good. A lot to work with.
Detect Chaotic is 7200gp.

I was going to try to give it class levels (something the DM said I can do) possibly in Psion, and give it healing abilities. But since no DM input here I'm going with Raws.
For this now I'm looking at detect spam.
essentially, if noone uses it as a WEAPON, it will be a dousing rod.
In the event that I can't get it to have the once-per-wielder changing ability, it'll essentially be a LN +3 Starmetal Intelligent Lance with Detect abilities.

Detection does seem to be a good avenue of approach.
@Dorian Basically, a huge, opinionated compass needle.

5:05 PM
Basically.
Noone in the party uses lances (we got a club wielder, a chain wielder, and myself, the sneaky archer specialist without a melee weapon)

The SRD's list of powers isn't too exciting, so let's see if we can think of some alternative powers and find a price for them later.

The healer of the party I've never seen in melee, but she's been doing pewpew tactics with a bow.
She's also a cohort, so we don't want her in melee.
Those are the only "Intelligent Item" powers period unfortunately...
I'm looking into various magic item creation rules as well to give it some things, but alot of the equivalents are much cheaper on the intelligent item powers.
Take for example Cure Moderate there for 6500. that ability through Magic Item Creation rules would be twice that iirc.

Pathfinder's decided to skip the list of powers and instead just have the item just get any spells they want. d20pfsrd.com/magic-items/intelligent-items

There are a few non-plus bonuses out there for magic items that I was liking, but most would require use in combat.

Yes. well. it's a weapon. :)

5:10 PM
Hmm... I like some of that stuff.
Either way, I'll get a chance for sure to speak with the DM today, but Im' currently RPing the lance (since my character is petrified). Luckily it's broken.

You can use general Wondrous Items rules, I suppose.
There's a rule that non-slotted items cost more, right?

Recent backstory is that it was used by a recurring NPC the group knows a bit about to try to kill a monster (oh, and the NPC's name is Lance) and broke the bloody lance trying to do it.
So I'm flubbing everything with: it can see, hear, and talk, that's about it. It's personality and memory are essentially gone.
For quite a while (sometime in the past 100 years this happened) this spear has been broken, sitting in a dark room unable to see shit, without memory, and with a 10 in every score. He's a cranky git right now, and until he's fixed he won't know any better lol

Maybe zone of truth or something like that?

So, this gives me time to play with it. If the DM gives me permission to use some of the ideas I have that aren't RAW, I'll be working on it heavily for another week incorporating alot of different things.

As for non-slotted items, yes, I believe there is a rule pertaining to that.
zone of truth seems like it would be handy in some circumstances, and I do believe the justice freak of the party (healer cohort...) would love having that around.
Also having Detect Evil/Detect Chaotic would be handy too.

Chaotic heretics tend to lie. Maybe detect chaos with zone of truth to make it a sort of inquisitor's rod.

5:15 PM
I know there's an evil party member, but I wouldn't want to let the justice freak of the party get her hands on detect evil since the evil party member is pretty decent (and a trip god)

Maybe a slightly modified hold person that allows the person to talk.

He's LE, and his purpose is to slay orcs. Which is great for out current mission... which has a TON of orcs we're trying to kill lol.
Hmm...

@Dorian I think this item's focus is on the Chaotic aspects, not the Evil.

Perhaps
True. I was thinking of other possible ways I can make it too though for a while.
If my character possesses the lance for example, and finds out that the other char is Evil, he wouldn't give a crap. My character is TN, and as long as the evil trip god continues to fight alongside them honorably, he won't say a word.
He's worked with far worse lol.
I had thought of making a full on detection rod with essentially a backstory consisting of "i was made to find things and kill them" in frustration of wanting this awesome Longinus/Jesus backstory to be for a better weapon that will STAY with the party and be a good standalone.
But I'm merging things... Just looking at notes all around.... Frustrated in general at this though since I was told to make this last sunday and have it ready today...
And the DM hasn't been online all week and i have no other way to contact him.
Also, pretty sure another party member might be chaotic.
the club guy...
not 100% on that though
Don't think I'd want to give it a special purpose though even via PF rules there.

@Dorian That sounds like a great thing.
Being chaotic doesn't have the same social stigma as being Evil. It's a legitimate way of life.
But suddenly this magical item starts giving him a hard time for it (and, presumably, the item's holder).
It can make for great stories.

5:23 PM
Yeah... if the player is into RP.
Which he isn't really.

I see.

The most RP he did included smashing things usually.
Oh, and the one time he deliberately failed a reflex save in a lightning storm...
Lightning almost killed him. Also fused a mountain worg skull to his head because he was wearing it.

Wolfhead McChaoticky. Gotcha.

I'm going to cross my fingers and hope that the DM lets me use the PF rules. I'm going to gank that Magic Aura at least.
Hrmmm...
Might go without the alignment detection stuff altogether and go with other things... Meh................................ Hard to make this thing be useful.
I need at least one version before 5 today finished. Even with a crap backstory.
If the Dm allows me more time and actually speaks to me regarding some things then I'll go more into the Jesus/Longinus story probably. For now I think I'll try to give it something base and generic.
So, generic usefulness stuff. Stuff along the lines of communication/scouting/detection.
Dorian growls in frustration and throws something.

Even if the Longinus angle doesn't pan out, I'd try to find a niche and focus on that.
It's more interesting that way.

5:36 PM
I'm so done with this... I love it when people contradict themselves, such as give me a project and say they'll get in touch with me and then vanish.
Plus the one member of the party I can actually reach out to doesn't like intelligent weapons that are standalone.
They're supposed to be weapons with the spirits of heroes in them apparently. Anything else usually puts them at odds with the rest of the party.

If you don't want to spend too much (more) time, maybe run a few items through this and see if they give you ideas. Pathfinder, but still:
This is a 4e article, but it can still give ideas, even if not mechanics wizards.com/dnd/files/dragon/367/367_intelligent_items.pdf

Hmm... I think I have an idea. Going to go with detect evil, special purpose to defeat spellcasters, pf detect special purpose foes, detect magic, possibly hold person and/or the Sudden Stunning ability if I have extra. Even if it's a pain to use, the sudden stunning could be useful in a pinch.
Was also considering the Merciful ability but iirc that's a +1 ability.
Would have been nice though considering. Add extra dmg to it even if it's nonlethal.

4 hours later…
9:36 PM
@BESW It took all Con, but I found a set of FATE dice.

Yey!

They're nice heavy metal ones too.
With pointy table-destroying corners.

10:05 PM
I don't think metal dice are a good idea for my group; they're kinda violent with rolling.

Negative reinforcement?

It took about a year to get them to just roll the dice so they stay on the table...

11:10 PM
Reddit/Imgur got this picture from Guam earlier today:
Reddit: "Oh, hey, we're military and military brats who recognise that carabao from the two years we spent on Guam a few decades ago!"
Imgur: "That's an ox!"

11:42 PM
@BESW You... managed to make them stop?

@Zachiel Stop rolling the dice so they go off the table? Pretty much, yes.

(I have a player that has lots of useless things on the table. To avoid rolling towards them, he rolls in his own direction.

I instituted a "Roll on a handbook; if one die goes off the handbook, re-roll all the dice" policy. Eventually they learned to control their rolls, and now they can do it without the handbook.

Mhhhh I guess we'd never get a roll done that way XD

I've also used a dice tower...

11:52 PM
A friend of mine is trying to build a foldable dice tower

I found a single-page dice tower template, but it's hard to track down again...
I made mine out of thin corrugated cardboard and a lot of tape.
Add in the dice catcher tray and your dice are well contained.

@BESW oooh purty

It's not foldable, but it's less than 6'' tall.

His idea is to have the tray as a container, with the back wall being the lid and the side walls opening with hinges.

[adds link to profile]

11:57 PM
The front wall would be inserted from the top, but he has no idea about how to fold or keep in place the ramps

What's it to be made of?

wood panels
as you can probably guess the aim is to have it be very slim when folded
