@waxeagle BTW, the main character in Attack the Block is cast for Star Wars VII.
01:48
interesting
02:09
@waxeagle Just finished it, and I gotta say I hope more films take a lot of cues from it.
that whole "spores on the solar wind" thing is interesting
it almost seems like a partially obscure reference to Star Control 2
Doctor Who has done it a few times, as have several science fiction authors over the decades.
I really like the character design for the aliens.
huge black furballs with blue glowing mouths with blue glowing teeth in them?
actually, they have arms like gorillas, but obviously not complete gorilla bodies
@BESW anyway my point was, these guys could have actually been in Star Control II, or more acurately, be something hinted at existing in it
Just the teeth glow, and their fur isn't just black--it doesn't reflect light at all.
So they're spiky silhouettes; the film can show them full-body and still have them be mysterious and creepy.
if you get the main villain race to talk to you enough, part of their justification for what they are doing includes "alien pestilence and disease borne on the solar wind"
02:23
And they don't have eyes, but when they close their mouths the teeth look like eyes.
well they could have eyes under all the fur couldn't they?
They're explicitly blind and use echolocation and smell to navigate.
ah ok
02:59
[cough] WRONG. a) the question isn't about brooding. b) since when does anyone need a traumatic event to justify a personality trait? That's just overexposure to lazy writing.
03:22
03:46
@BESW "must be a loner for a reason" doesn't mean that reason has to be a singular traumatic event. It could be the whole of his childhood shaped him into a loner. I think you might be projecting your displeasure at lazy writing into this.
Same smell. Some people are quiet. You don't need a reason.
Mind over matter. Ignore the pain. [peruses Lord_Gareth and co.'s psionic bestiary]
Sometimes there is a reason. But the idea that someone with a non-"normal" way of interacting with people needs a reason is silly.
(tangentially: I have just discovered that it is possible to edit a chat message after it is deleted, but this edit remains shrouded under the delete, uselessly. Time for a Meta.SE post!)
@Grubermensch Well whaddaya know. [marvels]
03:52
@BESW I think it is important to figure out more of the nature of the quietness though. "Quiet people" aren't usually quiet under all circumstances. This scoping falls under what I would consider "reasons".
Aye. If they elaborated on that I'd be cool with it.
But instead they immediately followed up with the whole "brooding" thing.
Yeah that line is inideal, as it suggests a narrow view of what quiet people are.
In that context, I'm disinclined to give the rest of the answer the benefit of the doubt where it could be read broadly or narrowly.

as a relatively quiet person myself, I would say we are not all brooding people
and yeah under certain circumstances I am indeed much less quiet

Right when I was thinking why my character wants to do the things we discussed with Brian
Oh, 15 hours ago? Maybe not right when, then

Q: Is my DM being fair?

KolotosMe & some friends recently started playing 4e & none of us had played anything like it before. However, recently, the guy who was DM-ing at the time (we're taking turns to see who enjoys it/is good at it) killed two of us in one encounter right after an extended rest. He said that is was all cal...

@dampes8n Guess what! I'm not dead! I'll see if I can get a FF style Inn background done today
Also, I realized the hair highlights for the avatar I made were stupid and attempted to fix them somewhat: imgur.com/a/mChPP
I might also try to make more of an "action" pose in the future.
I also might take a second look at the shading on those slimes
But first, a background!

2 hours later…
21:35
@RedRiderX Cool. I look forward to what you come up with! :)
Hmm, I thought I'd like to see comment downvotes for those times when a comment is rendered invalid by a response but then realized I can just flag as obsolete or not constructive...
@Metool Now if only that worked for the irrelephant and misunderstood 24-vote comment on my second-highest-voted answer.
Current progress:
Shading is still pretty basic, but that's the general idea
I think I'm running into the brown problem again :P
@RedRiderX It'll happen just as long as you keep desiring brown. So much brown in the world. :P NES Palette makes you consider lighting so brown looks purple or red or green.
Hmm yeah I might try with red
21:44
Question, is that the floor or a wainscoting?
Probably wainscoting
I'm trying to stick to a FF style background
Using this for some inspiration:
Why trying to keep it interesting
@RedRiderX you probably need a floor given how the scene is laid out
@Grubermensch That's my concern
@Grubermensch True, though FF avoided it:
@RedRiderX I suspect that was for technical limitations
21:47
@DampeS8N True, but so was the NES palette
How will the background show up in Level Up?
There is some issue that perspective on the floor is going to be difficult to convey with the resolution limitations
@RedRiderX Behind (layered under) the battle sprites. Replacing the gray currently there.
As it is now
I'm open to alternatives if you think something won't work.
@DampeS8N Ah okay
@RedRiderX Once they have the option they went right for showing the floor.
True but the screen was taller than what we have here
But let me try something...
21:51
@RedRiderX Try with what's there, if you can't make it work and look good lets break it down and go ahead and build out a mock up of your ideal.
If what is there won't work, we'll replace it with what will work. :)
It will probably work, honestly.
@RedRiderX I'm happy when you're happy. :)
And I'm happy when you're happy!
22:09
Still needs polish and repeatablity, but that's the general idea for the floor
22:24
Well, looks like I won't have time to finish it today, I should be done it this week though
Be sure to let me know you have any criticism.
23:19
@RedRiderX I think The Winter Soldier didn't give Rogers enough opportunities to display his leadership and tactical skills. ...oh, you meant of your art. I'm not sure you need all those cobblestones; they make the floor excessively busy compared to the wall. You only need just enough stones to give the impression of a cobbled walkway.
[wave]
What is, in the parlance of the young, "up"?

that just made me think of this
trying to get my wife to make a D&D character since she'll be coming to the game shop this week because roller derby has its summer break
she is not acquiescing
wanting to help both of the low quality 4e posts from today and yesterday but they are so bad that voting to close seems like the only option unless they edit and improve the questions
@RedRiderX If the stones increased ever so slightly in size as they neared the bottom, this would increase the sense of depth in the room. And I agree with @BESW that you don't need that many cobblestones.
@JoshuaAslanSmith Has your wife played before?
D&D, yes
she was a regular player when we played 4e together and I believe shes played next once or twice
23:33
Hmm. Well sometimes it is fun to just watch. Perhaps she's not in the zone to game right now.
just not in the zone to roll up a character
@JoshuaAslanSmith Brilliant.
Any existing ones in a suitable state for reuse?
nah, she hasnt made one for the latest playtest rules
itll be easy once she does roll one up
I mean shes going to play a barabarian
there are like 5-6 meaningful choices that get made to make a lvl 6 barbarian
