@RedRiderX I'm liking where this is headed!
@RedRiderX Scale does seem right.
Current state
The NES color palette is so racist
Barely anything but lighter flesh tones
@RedRiderX Yes, it is. Be glad there were any flesh tones. They could have always added more blues. lol
20:32
@RedRiderX No one apparently needs yellow or orange. And there doesn't need to be more than 2 browns. But why not have 15 blues?
Gotta get those waves nice and smooth!
But I think that the terrible palette leads to really creative problem solving and interesting coloration choices because realistic isn't always an option. I think that's why so many NES games managed to have really great aesthetics.
@DampeS8N Very true
Also 5 blacks
Just.... why?
Did they run out of color power or something?
@RedRiderX They just gave up. The couldn't think of any more colors.
And you wish it was 5. It is 9 blacks, and one dark grey that is almost black
Oh my GIMP palette must not be properly representing the excess of black contained in the palette then.
20:36
And technically, there is a 12 color maximum for sprites.
:::For a full listing of computer's color palettes, see List of color palettes This is a list of the full color palettes for notable video game console hardware. For color palettes of early 8-bit personal computers, see the List of 8-bit computer hardware palettes article. For current RGB display systems for 32-bit and better PCs (Super VGA, etc.), see the 16-bit RGB for HighColor (thousands) and 24-bit RGB for TrueColor (millions of colors) modes. For various software arrangemen...
Forget that
Though I may stick to it anyway
At a certain point more colors just add confusion to the sprite.
All I care about is using the colors. Those hues are burned into my mind as oldschool RPG colors/
However, the technical details about how the NES worked are great to read about. There are so many wizard level hacks used. It is amazing the games worked at all.
Even trying to debug a program on the NES sounds like a near impossibility to me.
But I don't do embedded programming.
I think we're getting where we want to be
The brown looks too brown though :-/
20:52
@RedRiderX Try one of the other...ooohh right..
@RedRiderX I've seen people use 7 maroon before for brown, matching it next to greens to trick the eye, maybe a green shirt and brown/maroon mix?
Same with the 6 line of red/oranges
21:07
@DampeS8N Hmm
Might try the blue-green trick next.
Oh wait that would mean changing the hair color too...
I think
@RedRiderX Your call, but I don't dislike it as it is.
It could be something I use in future outfits.
I like the idea
@RedRiderX And I did want the first avatar to be gender neutral. But I like the beardyface.
Ah true
I could change the head
How about that?
Yes, let's make it a bit more neutral somehow and I think we are there.
pecks-that-could-be-small-breasts?
21:18
Hmm it's currently flat-chested, but let me try it...
@RedRiderX once we have the character editor version we'll be able to offer body types in the full range of fat/thin busty/pecky/flat strong/nimble
@DampeS8N Good point
So this first guy being the most average possible is fine with me.
I'd like to try and do it with mostly shading but there would have to be more than one brown :P
@RedRiderX Try bright pink, that's sorta brown
21:24
Pretty hamfisted I realize
@DampeS8N Oh
@RedRiderX lower the boob a pixel
I'm not sure any pink will work with the brown I chose.
Saggy smaller breasts mimic the silhouette of perky pecks.
Sort of painted myself into a corner with that one.
@RedRiderX Gods, I was kidding
21:27
I have to consider all options with this palette!
Actually...
I could use a more orange brown.
Ok, there is hot pick, right above it is a dark pinky maroon
try that in the spot above the peck
1 pixel
if it looks wrong, swap that color for the maroon you are using and try one dot of the maroon
Yeah no
Let me try the other one
Not the purple
Ok
One color over toward red, and also one pixel to the right
I think you will need to swap the maroon and that new color tho, it feels like it sits between the two reds you are currently using.
So the dark maroon will feel, in that spot, like it is half red and half brown
21:31
Oh wait I still need to...
I'm poking at it in PS
More what you were thinking?
3 pixels
over and under peck and in the armpit of the right arm
You can also use that maroon now as a brown
sparingly
@DampeS8N Good point
probably using it more as brown will reinforce the eye to accept it as brown
Like the whole thing is under a kind of reddish light
This is where that magic NES palette crucible thing happens. :)
21:41
Heh true
Too much or not enough?
Could use it as a color variation too.
22:03
Now I'm not sure which one to use!
Heck, why not both!
22:21
@DampeS8N If you're okay with how they turned out, here's the package: imgur.com/a/yvjuv#0
Let me know if you want me to export seperate images for each layer.
@trogdor If/when you guys find an intact Atlantean building, I'm tempted to have Masters crash the Amazing into it.
It sounds like I've fallen into an amazing story halfway through.
@RedRiderX Can't remember, do you have a Storium account?
No haven't heard of it before.
22:37
It's an online browser-based narrative RPG engine.
Oh cool
Hmm, the card mechanics seem neat.
Right now it's in a semi-closed beta, with public launch in the fall. I could send you an invite to make a free player-only account so you can look around and join games, with a $10 upgrade to be able to run your own games.
I don't really feel like either of my games have openings for more players right now, though.
Oh no that's fine.
I'm not sure I have time to commit to a game right now anyway.
Would you like a no-commitment invite just to look around?
Oh sure if it's no trouble.
22:41
You can observe any game the narrator's set to "public." (Both of mine are.)
Should I give you an email?
Should I use the email on your website?
Yeah that should be fine.
Sent. You should get an email soon, or you can just click on this link.
Cool thanks!
22:45
This is the game with crashing into Atlantean buildings, and I'm also running a slightly more serious game about elves colonising an island with a terrible history.
Whoops, suddenly shopping. ttfn, enjoy!
Oh they even have a out of character commentary box.
@BESW Thanks again!

1 hour later…
23:47
@RedRiderX These are great! Give me both as single files, not broken into parts. I am thinking I'm gonna use the redhead right now.

@RedRiderX danke
Not sure when I'll get to the Inn background, but I'll keep you posted
