He failed the roll to keep it a secret, and chose to succeed at serious cost: we decided the cost is that in order to keep the secret and explain his moving through the city, he deliberately got himself a reputation for visiting prostitutes.
Attack and defense rolls are about the only times you can't choose to succeed at cost.
So what keeps Walker, Texas Ranger interesting? What challenges does he face, what gets in his way?
Or, what about Riddick?
Riddick is Wanted Everywhere, he has Extreme Night Vision (a bonus and a penalty based on circumstance), he's Better Off Alone but Defends the Meek.
I don't know. I think most of the fascinating power of Walker Texas Ranger is seeing Chuck Norris win over the bad guys because that's how life should be.
None of these except his night vision ever gets in the way of being an awesome person in his areas of expertise, but they often get in the way of his goals.
its pathfinder, not Fate system :|
Riddick, sadly I'm unfamilar with the series. It's on the list of things I need to watch.
@Discipol I know. I'm waiting for your phrase.
16:05
@BESW phrase?
You need to be as specific as possible about what you mean by "Riddick's style," because making him all those things is pretty much impossible if you want him to be competent at any of them.
This cleric also has wis 19. The cleric PC has a 28
20 mins ago, by BESW
So, if we go to my Gandalf question, you need to come up with a short phrase that describes Riddick and his "style."
assasin
survivor
stalker
So he's... a Hardy survivalist who strikes from the shadows?
16:08
that would be a good High Concept
I have played dresden files :> a bit familiar with Fate
Aye, and it's very useful in chargen for other systems too, because it gives us a focus and a goal.
Every choice you make about the character should somehow go back to that phrase.
his fault would be Spirit of a wolf in the body of a man
If you find yourself feeling like you "need" to have a feature that doesn't fit the phrase, or it's not Riddick, then you need to adjust the phrase.
i understand
riddick is somewhere between chaotic neutral and lawful evil
Now: if faced with two options: would you rather have a sub-optimal choice that "feels" exactly right, or an optimal choice that doesn't "feel" quite like the Riddick in your head?
IE: If the "Riddick feel" is better gained by a sub-optimal feature choice, that's okay.
Re: alignment, well, that's a bag of drowned kittens we don't need to open. I'm of the opinion that 3.PF alignment is absolute and objective, with little to no interest in intent and based only on actions. In which case, Riddick is Neutral Evil. In philosophy and intent, he's probably Lawful Neutral.
16:16
I would have to know what it implies
@Discipol I'm asking about the optimization choice thing as a general rule. Obvious individual cases would be dealt with individually, but do you have a feeling about whether you're more interested in a Riddick-like mechanically superior character or a more viscerally Riddick character who might not be quite as superior mechanically?
id rather him be mechanically sound
no sense in faithfully roleplaying a dead Riddick
is there
It'd largely depend on your group's optimization choices.
So, here's what I've got:
- Hardy survivalist who strikes from the shadows
- Night-optimized, okay to be at the expense of daytime ability.
- Specializes in blades.
- Affinity with animals a bonus.
- If the "Riddick feel" is best gained by a sub-optimal feature choice, I'd rather have a slightly less Riddick-like but mechanically superior feature.
so far so good
Blades: Melee and thrown if possible, obviously, but if you had to choose just one...?
16:21
melee if hp and ac is decent
Anything else you think is crucial to the concept?
baldness
:D
Alright then.
Riddick is known to turn lesbians to heteros
one more thing
as a secondary prefference
high intimidation and will
@Discipol Eh. That last line could've been taken at least three different ways, and only one of them would've had that implication.
- Hardy survivalist who strikes from the shadows
- Night-optimized, okay to be at the expense of daytime ability.
- Specializes in blades (melee a must; also ranged if possible).
- Good at Intimidation
- Will save is not a viable dump area.
- Affinity with animals a bonus, but not necessary.
- If the "Riddick feel" is best gained by a sub-optimal feature choice, I'd rather have a slightly less Riddick-like but mechanically superior feature.
- Bald.
16:25
also not eliminating spellcaster class(es)
Aye, but that's an omission not a requirement.
Want me to make the edit to the question for you?
i would have loved 3.5 assasin
yes please
hugs

Q: How do I build Riddick?

DiscipolJust came back from Riddck and I loved it. Less than Chronicles of Riddick, I am afraid, but enjoyable still. I would like a 20 build for Riddick based on these criteria: Concept: Hardy survivalist who strikes from the shadows Night-optimized, okay to be at the expense of daytime ability. Spe...

Give that a look-see and make sure I didn't say anything wrong.
Whoops, typo. [fiddles]
"Riddick" doesn't look like a word anymore. Not that it was good at looking like a word to start with.
I'm afraid that 3.PF doesn't do "stealth killing" very well in a plays-well-with-a-party sense.
Unless the entire party is stealth-based everyone else has to sit around and watch the GM run the stealth PC solo whenever he goes sneaking.
And stealth usually goes out the window once combat starts.
16:36
rogue feint would work
The one time I ever built a full-on stealth character, I had a rock enchanted with permanent darkness.
It's like an everburning torch, but with dark instead of light.
And now I want to stat up Pitch Black-era Riddick in Fate.
Hmm. His whole "last Furyan" thing is part of his high concept in the other two films, but not in Pitch Black. Interesting, story-wise.
@GMNoob Hey.
What's new?
@BESW why have I been summoned? :P
...because you signed in.
16:44
Oh, that's what I get for leaving all my tabs open when I turn off my computer :)
well the last furyan aoe explosion thing in riddick 2 was a little farfetched to me
he went ssj for a second there
Mmm. I generally think Chronicles was a leap too far.
i loved everything about necromongers
especially the art style
It had some good visuals, and the basic ideas weren't bad.... just... not Riddick.
It was like they wanted to do a Riddick film, and some other entirely different space opera film, but decided to do them both at once.
Pitch Black didn't even hint at sapient alien races, for one thing--much less that Riddick was one of them. The franchise went out of its way twice to retcon it.
Chronicles would've been a much better film if it hadn't been a Riddick film--it still could've starred VD, just not as Riddick, because it turned into a massive case of genre whiplash, and a lot of effort was put into trying to tie the space opera story to a survivalist horror story instead of just working on the space opera.
@Discipol I think I'd probably use a ranger base for Riddick, and then apply liberal amounts of class variants.
17:08
@Zachiel I'm a fan of the divine energy focus personally :) but the divine reach does kick ass
Favored Environment and Spiritual Guide, maybe.
Riddick kicked ass.
Alternately, wilderness-variant rogue.
I liked the necromonger leader's quickness ability :)
xD
soul steal & shit
what about a cleric of savagery or something of the sorts?
somehow give a cleric or...oracle? sneak attack
17:10
A pure caster would definitely be more powerful.
But the further you get from "like Riddick" (IE, powerful spellcasting), the less help we'll be.
Although their "both here and there" graphics left something wanting.
Because it just turns into a powerful caster build pretty fast.
So I am looking in the races of Fearun book. Some of the sub races have different ability modifiers the a normal race. Where would I find that? I just read through one and didn't find anything.
Am I just blind and not seeing it or is it another book I need to look in?
17:32
@BESW i only meant spellcaster to aid in the sneakyness and stuff
@Discipol I see.
@Saeed, @idris, @Garan Hi!
@BESW Hello to all!
What's new?
Not much, although the news has been active here
"here"?
17:52
hello all
Hay.
@BESW so we have everything we need for some builds?
I think you've got enough that people should feel confident in guessing whether a build they make will be helpful to you.
I don't know PF well enough to do any building myself.
@BESW "Here" being Israel.
18:37
Ooh, another Sabra
@GMNoob "Sabra"?
Or not... :P
@Garan Israeli
אני לא מבין...
lol
you aren't by any chance up north are you?
Not right now, but I live there
Why?
18:41
We have a gaming group thursday nights that needs more people
By the way, I only arrived a month ago from the states
But where up north?
Alternates, between Ma'alot and Acco
Ah, welcome then :)
Oh well, wrong side of the country. I live in Hispin (not so far from Katzrin).
close enough :P I had some friends who used to live there
Both Hispin and Katzrin
Ah, cool.
18:52
@Garan If you ever itch for a live game, you can ping me here. There are currently 4 of us, and we rotate as DM every now and then. Currently we are mainly playing WFRPG first edition, but we change game systems every now and again as well. We played 4e for a while, Cyberpunk 2020, shadowrun, and just tried out iron kingdoms
@GMNoob Well, thursday nights might still work, but only every third week. See, I'm in a yeshiva for the year, and every third week we have an out Shabbat. On those weeks, we have off from 1:00 on Thursday through the weekend. So it would depend on my plans.
@Garan Ah nice. We don't play every week. Generally what happens is we send out an email/facebook message asking if we can play this week or not, and then decide on a time and place. And.. how did you end up in Hispin for yeshiva for the year? Though that might be off topic for this chat.
@GMNoob Ok, cool. I'll create a separate room
and we can continue to talk there
19:20
any d2 players here?
I tend not to use the d2 and just flip a coin instead.
@Aaron player's guide to faerun
@Discipol diablo 2? Sure. But I'm going out now, see you another day
@Discipol In seriousness, though, yes but it has been a while and I'd need to download it again.
@Discipol I ike single player d2, or lan party, open bnet maximum
@Zachiel Agreed, it's much better when you can communicate with your party well and it's better with friends if with anyone else.
19:28
I am looking for d2 mods
Oh. Can't help in that regard, sorry.
It's okay. I still love you Garan.
Aw, thanks.
@Zachiel Nevermind I am an idiot. XD
@Zachiel I must be missing it. What category is it under? I see the regions for the races but not anything about the different sub races.
I even spent money on getting Diablo 2 again, but couldn't get it to work on my computer
Has anyone tried Jenga RPG?
19:55
@Zachiel I found it.
20:35
It's quite
@Aaron No it isn't, it's quiet.
21:29
@Discipol I liked Median XL
D&D 3.0 question for which I'd like an answer before a friend of mine gies to bed: what skill and DC should be used to identify an item as an artifact? Those artifacts are specific of a certain faith.
22:23
@Zachiel knowledge arcana or bardic knowledge
analyze dweomer
identify should work on an 100 on 1d100
they don't have it in their hands, they see it on an enemy
and if they recognize it they might decide not to cast Disjunction
I want to know which encounter I need to prepare
23:01
@GMNoob I've run it about half a dozen times now
23:29
@Discipol as it turns out, yes. I play D2 quite a bit
was playing it earlier
