It didn't work, it seemed to make things worse :P
I think I'm editing the yaboot.conf file wrong. Here is the version that I have right now:
## yaboot.conf generated by the Ubuntu installer
##
## run: "man yaboot.conf" for details. Do not make changes until you have!!
## see also: /usr/share/doc/yaboot/examples for example configurations.
##
## For a dual-boot menu, add one or more of:
## bsd=/dev/hdaX, macos=/dev/hdaY, macosx=/dev/hdaZ

boot="/dev/hda2"
device=/pci@f2000000/pci-bridge@d/mac-io@7/ata-4@1f000/disk@0
partition=3
root="UUID=940b9703-2dac-43fa-bf7e-973987bf28ee"
timeout=100
install=/usr/lib/yaboot/yaboot
magicboot=/usr/lib/yaboot/ofboot

3 hours later…

Hm, not sure what to do. Have any ideas?
17:51
Actually, I'll make that a new question, since it's off topic.
Thanks for your help!
18:47
I made a new question on SO because I was asking a different question, but if you'd like to help that'd be great!
yep - saw that - the funky colours is because of the fbdev driver - which could be a clue I think
switch back to using the original ATI driver...
Okay. How would I go about doing that?
... ok I'm looking at this thread which looks promising - lets see if we can get something working.... forums.debian.net/viewtopic.php?f=30&t=57366
edit your xorg.conf ....
I can see the gui
which I think currently contains the following?
Section "Device"
Identifier "Configured Video Device"
#Driver "ATI Technologies Inc Rage 128 PF/PRO AGP 4x TMDS"
Driver "fbdev"
EndSection
remove the #
18:51
Okay, one moment.
and add the # to the "fbdev" line ie.
then immediately after the identifier line add
Option "UseFBDev"
And that
's it?
I gotta restart or...
yep - so that particular section should be "section...identifier...driver "ati..."... option... #driver "fbdev" ... endsection
try restarting
Okay brb
It's still starting up... It's really slow this time.
Ut oh.
It has the command prompt, saying "Ubuntu login:"
is that the TTY login?
19:00
Yea
what's in the xorg.0.log towards the bottom - i.e. did it fail with the same errors as before?
It's different
It says
"Loading extension DRI2"
warning, couldn't open module atitechnologiesincrage128pf/proagp4xtdms
UnloadModule: proagp4xtdms
Failed to load module "atitechnologiesincrage..."
No drivers available
what is your powerpc model - is it a cube G4?
It is...
a
G4 rectangle
Not a cube
huh? that is a new one on me ... just going to google that one...
19:09
I'll find the model, brb
Found it!
power mac g4
... ok still googling for your particular model - could you try "Option "UseFBDev" "false"
and reboot?
Okay I'll try that. Sorry, it's a Power mac G4, not a G4 rectangle :o
... ok found another promising link - its not your particular model - but he had the same graphics card forums.debian.net/viewtopic.php?f=7&t=45343
Okay I'll have a look at that
Section "Device"
Identifier "ATI Technologies, Inc. Rage 128 PR/PRO (AGP TMDS)"
Driver "ati"
Option "UseFBDev" "true"
Option "AGPMode" "2"
Option "AGPFastWrite" "true"
EndSection
seems some powerpc you have to "usefbdev" "false" and some you have to use "usefbdev" "true" ... doesnt seem to be consistent
19:23
I have to go, bye! I'll read what you posted and I'll try it
.Section "Device"
Identifier "Configured Video Device"
Driver "ati"
Option "UseFBDev" "true"
Option "AGPMode" "2"
Option "AGPFastWrite" "true"
EndSection
use that section - possibly "driver "r128" instead of "driver "ati" ... anyway good luck
