that's a subreddit where people express how stressful tech support can be when there are difficult clients ;P
Do you think 20% of job description can be ignored when reading requirements for job? I mean no one can perfectly 100% match job requirements.
@Leathe I loved "arrow mover". Mouse?! Is there a such thing or did you made that up?
11:21
@Boris_yo Apply for the job you want, not the one that matches your qualifications. Once you know which job you want, get it.
2
Bob
Bob
@OliverSalzburg Or, the job that feeds you, at least as a temporary measure :P
@Bob Indeed
@Boris_yo "IT supervisor at Fab.com". Which is not a supervisor position.
@boris_yo re: "Heh okay I will say it here. What if poop comes out in diarrhea form? How do you clean that?". THEN your dog it sick. Do not walk him. Let ihim or her into your garden.
@Hennes What do you mean? Why they wrote "supervisor" in first place?
On the job add they wrote a few lines and the heading "IT supervisor"
I asked HR which did not know what the job was about.
11:35
@Hennes No garden here, at least I live in apartment.
Then I talked to their director internal systems and finally learned what the job was about
Re dog: Well, problem. :(
Take paper with you, plastic gloves, ...
Or let the dog in a dog-park. (Though that is probably not a good idea for other dogs which might get sick)
was the title really "director internal systems"?
@OliverSalzburg Wait but then why would they have those job descriptions in first place? That is to pre-qualify prospects and separate those from the pack.
"Global Director, Internal Systems at Fab.com"
@Hennes Yeah that is the problem and the reason I consider having cat is better. All you do is change the sand at home.
11:37
ah
@Hennes Who is this guy?
That is the person I talked to who knew what tghe job was about
@Bob I just always have this insecurity when I read job descriptions; what if I can't do that, what if I don't match...
@Hennes So that means you never know 100% until you have interview with HR or employer?
Aye.
that's usually why you do interviews :P and besides, most people who apply for jobs are not qualified :D
Bob
Bob
11:40
@Boris_yo Do you have 96 years experience? :P
@Bob hahahaha
That means HR in general modified the requirements in such a way that you have to guess what it is that the original person wanted to hire.
@Bob Elves have usually.
In this case they did two skype interviews. They know my skills.
Also, "what would you do it ..." and "how would you solve X if Y" questions are easy.
@Bob ... why 96 though? Because each job requires some experience?

http://www.rizecorp.com/US/career-jobs.html
Aww, they fixed it.
damn
@Boris_yo yeah, instead of the 1-2 years it says there now, it used to say 36-60, 72-96 etc :P
Bob
Bob
:D
archives for the save! :D
Bob
Bob
11:44
probably meant months
@Hennes Yeah those in IT field have "keep it simple" solutions. Like, "Computer does not turn on. What do you do?" You can get smart and say I would check power supply, then you can say check motherboard, them if MB is shortened... all while the simple answer would be "Power cord was plugged out from power splitter"
@Leathe What kind of mad employer would require this?
Hmm. probably Rogue Ales would :P
was posted earlier here, a few days ago I think: reddit.com/r/Portland/comments/1geixc/…
check the picture :P
that's an example of requirements no one will meet.
or will want to meet.
@Boris_yo These job offerings are for "other" people ;P
Like, if I wanted to work for a specific company, I would try to get a job there regardless if they have a job offering posted :P And if I saw a job offering for some job that required a masters in CS and 10 years of experience in management, I would still apply, because I'm awesome ;P
And if they don't want me, FINE! I'll just keep moderating SU then
4
I think I now understand what you said here. By 96 years of experience you probably mean all those different certifications and experience in different skillsets. Like when hiring programmers I often see: Need experience in .NET, C++, JAVA, this and that plus a bunch of certifications.

I then wonder how many years one would need to know all this.
Bob
Bob
@Boris_yo No.
It was a mistake.
They meant months.
I was making a joke.
You are reading far too much into it.
11:54
OK, back in a nice suit.
AFK. interview in 60 minutes. Should be 30 min driving + safetymarging
Because I wonder what happens when employer asks me all what description was about and I won't have anything to say for myself.

Employer: - "Why did you apply for this position if you do no meet many requirements?"
Boris_yo: - "Urmm, eh..."
Bob
Bob
@Hennes Good luck.
@Hennes Good luck.
Bob
Bob
> because I'm awesome -- @OliverSalzburg
@Boris_yo Well, you should know why you would be the best person for the job
11:56
@Bob Okay then, you claim you are awesome and promise responsibility but what if you cannot meet demands for job? You just quit? But what if it is 2 year term?
@Hennes glhf
@Hennes Be sure to let them know that's you're awesome!
And when he asks for reference, mention Oliver Salzburg, Tom, Boris_yo and Mokubai

This should give you green light.
OR give them the sad puppydog eyes
11:59
@Boris_yo You shouldn't apply for a job that you can't handle
@OliverSalzburg How do you know if you can handle job if you never done it or never worked in that company?
@JourneymanGeek Works 100% of time.
Like, I wouldn't try to get a job in network engineering, because I don't know anything about that. But I would apply for almost any programming job, just because job listings aren't made by programmers. They are made by HR people and they just want to cover their asses with insane requirements
@Boris_yo I don't know. For the first job I ever applied to, I already had experience from past-time projects and I did an internship at that company before starting the job
Bob
Bob
@Boris_yo Term?
The employee would not pay any penalty for quitting, AFAIK.
@OliverSalzburg Oh so that's what it is. It is like insurance that you got the correct 200% candidates for the job to strip liability from yourself or something?
quite a few employers let you do a pratice period, atleast over here
Bob
Bob
12:02
unless you're a contractor
If you have zero experience in a certain field, you shouldn't get a job in that field. And if you have experience, it should allow you to gauge how well you would be able to handle the job
@Bob Yes there are jobs that have minimum obligation to work in a company in terms of years. Like 2 years and only then worker can quit.
Bob
Bob
@OliverSalzburg Well, not all employers are clear about job requirements. Or accurate.
@Boris_yo And what's stopping you from walking away?
What, will they send the police to hunt you down?
@Boris_yo I would claim that it is, yes. Someone with a ton of education and experience is less likely to fail. And you don't want the boss to come at you like "YOU HIRED THAT SHITHAT??? WTF IS WRONG WITH YOU O___o??"
for example, I'm an intern at a company. the requirement was pretty much to know basic T-SQL and general stuff about databases
they've thought me how to use the rest of the stuff, like SSRS and SSIS
12:03
@Bob They will sue me for not adhering to contract.
Also with dogs, just slip a paper before they poop, bag it and wet wipe the rear end @hennes @boris
"if you have dog poop on your roof, it's on the house."
And be ready to deal with accidents
Bob
Bob
@Boris_yo Then that's a contractor, not an employee.
12:05
Can't reply phone ;p
@JourneymanGeek Thanks I am getting hired as dog caregiver!
@Bob Contractor, the middleman, independent human resources?
@Boris_yo remember when greeting dogs, it's mandatory to say "Sup, dawg"
@Leathe Except if that dog is black.
yeah, then you say "hello sir"
I am white by the way. A little dim actually.
@Leathe Hello african-american sir!
12:07
could just be african
@JourneymanGeek Thanks for tip, although seeing your reply in the middle of serious conversation almost made me spit coffee on my lappy :D
I think it confused @OliverSalzburg quite a bit :P
@Leathe Yeah haha! Maybe he was the one who spat coffee afterall and now wiping his screen?
would make sense. concidering he didn't say anything after "lol wat"
Lol. I totally blame the phone
12:10
@JourneymanGeek You owe Oliver new computer screen.
ah. I almost forgot, I need to buy spirits for the weekend
and beer.
rawr. midsummer's incoming
@Leathe Meta posts came up ;P
@Leathe What is spirits?
@Boris_yo strong alcoholic beverage :p
@Leathe I know that beer helps grow your belly.
12:18
e.g vodka
I wonder what helps grow your brain...
Cannabis maybe...
Dang I just wrote the name of drug. Probably DEA had alarm triggered and now review our conversation.
@Leathe Oh man! I should have started drinking beer from my childhood. Imagine how smart I would be now. Or I wouldn't and only have bigger brain as useless weight?
Yeah. Too late for that now. :(
Hm. Buncha crappy reopen requests on meta
12:28
Anyone heard of P90X the weight loss program? Here is awesome (how it it called?):
@Sathya I agree comments are not the place to discuss this but you can see who started it :P — anubhava 14 mins ago

A: How to destroy file contents without deleting files

Oliver SalzburgI've wrote a quick approach utilizing the Random Data File Creator. This Windows command line script will do what you want: @ECHO OFF SETLOCAL IF "%1"=="" GOTO missingParam GOTO :begin :missingParam ECHO Missing target. Use shred.bat [DRIVE:\]DIRECTORY GOTO :eof :begin SET RDFC=%CD%\rdfc.exe ...

Fun :D
Bob
Bob
@OliverSalzburg Replace shred.bat with %~nx0 :P
@Bob Good call!
@OliverSalzburg That means nullify files i.e overwrite userdata with all zeroes?
derp. imma just go home

A: What are the Key Gameplay Differences between Valve's DOTA 2 vs League of Legends?

DecencyThis question has been a long time coming. My answer will undoubtedly be Dota2 biased because after playing both I feel that it is by far the better competitive game. However, I also believe that everything I say will be accurate- if anything isn't, or you feel there's something I've missed or sh...

@HackToHell Are you subscribed to Angry Joe's YouTube channel?
@Boris_yo nop
e
@HackToHell You will like it.
@Boris_yo No, he wanted random data.
guys i want a web based tool that does tracking of issues with project; while working on a software
its for mgt consumption
13:15
@Saladin Asana?
@Boris_yo ok
Running real low on storage space :|
@HackToHell Get rid of junk.
Now to catch up on my @
@Bob OOH.... thats pretty quality bullshit
"neutral polyethelene foam insulator" AKA styrofoam
...
whoa
I'm starting to think that I should get into this audio business
@OliverSalzburg: I know, right?
13:23
I should get one of those fake doctor titles off the internet
Buy some cheap cables from China
Wrap them in crocodile leather (it's for the dynamics)
@OliverSalzburg; you could build that thing off a arudino I think
holy shit
the pollution index is at 290 points - 10 points to hazardous
(which is as high as it goes)
@OliverSalzburg And use Amazon FBA service.
I think Machina is already in this business. That website with crazy stuff that @JourneymanGeek Often mentions.
@Boris_yo: we can in fact turn the crazy up to 11 ;p
@Hennes Your joke is comic. Sans doute.
@JourneymanGeek Holy shit, they have an "operating" system that reads .wav files from an SD card and plays them back. How did they achieve that???
Custom made!
@OliverSalzburg What operating system cannot do that?
probably a slightly more powerful version of sparkfun.com/tutorials/160
Xbox One... wooo
14:03
@Boris_yo That wasn't the point
In video?
Back. 3rd interview done. It went reasonably well.
Cool. 3rd interview? What happened with previous 2?
Bob
Bob
hey, another humble bundle!
yeah, just bought it :P
frozen synapse in there :>
Bob
Bob
14:12
@Leathe I already have that one
I didn't :P
Bob
Bob
lol
got it from an earlier bundle
too bad there's no steam key this time
holy shit
Broken Sword is 1.1 GB
You guys aware that Battlefield 3 was for $5 recently?
Bob
Bob
meh
@Boris_yo $5 too much
Bob
Bob
14:15
lol
I have Broken Sword 2: Smoking Mirrors
@Oliver Salzburg Excuse me?! Too much?
@Boris_yo To say it differently, the game is rubbish
Bob
Bob
oh wait, there are steam keys
hmm
anyone want frozen synapse?
aren't there always steam keys? :b
$50 is too much. Really? All Battlefields were great, like 2 and 2142.
How could they fack up 3 installment?
Bob
Bob
14:19
@Leathe yea, I got redirected by accident the first time
ah :p
Bob
Bob
hm. I never redeemed SpaceChem o.O
anyway, as I was saying, does anyone want frozen synapse? :P
@Boris_yo It's not that the third installment of that specific game is bad, the whole genre is bad
lol
@OliverSalzburg: since I've never played that, what genre? ;p
@JourneymanGeek First-Person War Simulator
14:21
ahh
then yes
but I'm mostly not a fan of FPSes anyway
Bob
Bob
wow @ today's xkcd
@JourneymanGeek Eh, I like CS.
It's always the same game in that genre. And then there are actually people arguing which is the better series, Battlefield or COD... Congrats guys, you are both winners in the game of who's the bigger idiot :P
Bob
Bob
And Sven Co-op is fun :D
lol
I play borderlands 2 ;p
Bob
Bob
played CoD4 for a bit. It was... alright
14:23
and I don't care if its a better game than yours. ;p
Bob
Bob
the newer ones are worse, in my opinion :P
@JourneymanGeek Been meaning to get around to that
@Bob: IMO the two additional charecter classes are worth it ;p
Bob
Bob
additional character classes?
But BF is multiplayer shotout game where you can use different vehicles too. It is 3rd person shooter respawn game.
14:25
basically the game comes with 4, but there's one charecter class that came with the preorder (mechromancer) and one thats a DLC (psycho)
Bob
Bob
ah
@Boris_yo dime a dozen
both those classes are a hoot
mechromancer has a giant robot
psycho... hits things... with an axe
What kind of game is that? @Bob
@Journeyman Geek I like to chop beef vegetables with axe...
14:29
@OliverSalzburg Heh. My alternative job as security insultant consultant: I have zero experience and the people I applied with know that. THey are willing to train me (at a starters salary and with me bringing a lot of practical windows knowledge to what now is a Unix only world)
Bob
Bob
@Hennes Wait, security is Unix-only? o.O
No. MG is mostly security testing from web apps
And the tools for that run equally well on Linux as on Windows.
@Hennes There's security insultant?
Bob
Bob
@Boris_yo It's a joke.
@Bob Well, if you care about your security...
14:30
Yes. "You are stupid! That is not secure!" -> security insultant
Bob
Bob
@Hennes Ehhh, that fits under both...
@Hennes Ha!
Search on OWASP and webgoat for some more detailed information
Bob
Bob
@Tanner Nothing says Unix-derived OSes are secure.
I wouldn't mess with WASPS...
Bob
Bob
14:32
..
The OS is not that important. The problem is usually trusting user supplied input or doing things which seem sage but are not.
A lot of flights recently involving F-16s... WW3?
char*old_buffer, char new_space needed. Allocate buffer (size old+new)
DO not bother checking if 'new' is a user suplied value and that the user supplied something negative
Bob
Bob
@Hennes Ah, yes.
Welcome buffer overflow
Bob
Bob
14:34
The SolusVM zero-day was SQL injection on an old script.
In C you can try to check for that with:
Bob
Bob
I can't believe we even have that anymore.
if ( x+y < x ) then panic! Some overflow. Exit!!!!
Which does not work.
Bob
Bob
Why the hell are people still concatenating SQL queries??
Since byte x + byte Y gets cast to a larger interget (no overflow)
then compared to X (which means X also gets upscaled)
So you never detect overflow
Assuming the compiler does not optimise it to True
Bob
Bob
14:36
@Hennes Hm?
@Bob My name is little bobby
and do you drop tables?
nods
Bob
Bob
Wait..
``;drop tables; :)
Bob
Bob
14:36
Why would that not work?
bob: assuming X and Y as chars
Bob
Bob
ah
wait
x+y gets cast to interget (bigger)
Bob
Bob
why are you using chars to specify a buffer size? o.O
14:37
Any good game in the new andriod humble bundle ?
then you compare the interget to char X (on the other side of the < )
which also gets upscaled
@Bob That is just an easy example
Bob
Bob
It's also not real-world, barring weird programmers and/or crazy micro-optimisations.
If someone is doing that, chances are the code will look funky enough to smell a mile off.
Real world MS IIS 4 and 5 is alloacting 64K
And since you want a buffer to be 0 terminated adding one
Depending on your types, 64k + 1 equals 0
Sorry, that was not 64k, that was user supplied 64k-1
I should get it right
weird ^^
Is comment upvoting gone?
14:44
@JimB I don't think so
You can try it on some of my comments
@OliverSalzburg, hmm I see the votes but the upvote widget seems gone. Have there been any recent changes to that? I should have plenty of rep if the rep limit changed (at least on SF)
How do floppies work? Do you spit them in, THEN access them? I mean, it seems I have to make the computer read the floppy by double clicking the Drive A in Computer to get it to even try to read
spit in them?
@JimB Works fine here
OH
@studiohack: I do think so
14:47
hmm maybe it's an IE issue
I don't remember, ;p
they certainly shouldn't auto-launch
@JimB Works here in IE10 as well
Floppies should suppurt auto-launch, except ona PC where th e disc change line often is not connected
@JourneymanGeek I figured as much
@studiohack, that's pretty much it. there is no "mounting" of removable media
14:48
@JourneymanGeek put them in
@Hennes this system has the auto launch disabled (corporate enviro)
Heh
"Please insert virus disk 17/20 into any drive"
problem is - it wants me to format before I can read the floppy. I can't do that
@Hennes nice font joke! I like!
@OliverSalzburg, hmm weirdness on my end perhaps? Seems like all of the stackexchange sites have no comment upvoting for me
Bob
Bob
@studiohack Perhaps it's HFS?
Or just time-degraded?
@JimB Try another browser?
@studiohack, if it's telling you it wants to format the disk when you click on it the floppy is unreadable by the system.
Bob
Bob
14:51
Just in case you have an extension/plugin/other interfering.
@Bob that probably lol
@bob, I'm working on that now:)
@JimB I figured as much. oh well
Lol:
The moral of the story - do something one and do it good.
How long does it take to copy 166 KB from a floppy!
14:58
10 secs
It's been about 60-70
lol
