anybody here?

2 hours later…
02:32
Is @allquixotic around?
@allquixotic give me a ping if you do come by tonight

2 hours later…
04:15
hmm
fresh watermelon juice ;p
04:45
Wouldn't that just be water? /s
Bob
Bob
05:10
@JourneymanGeek :D
@nhinkle Watermelon juice is the best!
@nhinkle: similar to, but entirely unlike.
@Hennes you don't play Diablo for puzzles ;p
(fwiw I have played D3 for well over 250 hours )
@Sathya: you play it to kill things, while pretty scenery passes by you
@JourneymanGeek what pretty scenery? ;p
the scenery you don't notice cause you are too busy killing things
;p
05:14
;p
right - that's the case now, since I'm playing inferno with monster power at 5. not too uncommon to kill mobs of 50 at once go
even better, bunch them all, give bunch of AoE skills & boom!
I played through once at normal, and got bored
(which is pretty suprising)
Normal is boring, way too easy
hell even nightmare is too easy
Hell is when it starts getting challenging
@Sathya: OTOH, I love torchlight
05:16
and Hell -> Inferno is when you'll either rage quit, flipping all tables or go crazy
(current game I'm playing is shank 2. NEEDS A JOYPAD)
and you still die a lot
Torchlight.. didn't get me hooked
I loved Shank
didn't play shank 2 though
Finished Shank in a 4 hour straight spree
got it on the HIB
lol
I don't think I've completed any other game in a single shot like that
I die a LOT
I think took me most of yesterday with a lot of dying to get past the first part of the game
05:19
I died a lot in the last 2 battles
and also the end-stage boss fights
I'm still not used to the concept of... dodging ;p
hahaa
:D
also joypads ;p
eii monday morning timesheet problems.. submitted timesheet meant for one proj to another -.-
05:27
@JourneymanGeek I bought an x360 controller long ago - well worth it
though I use it almost exclusively for racing games
I have a logitech F310
its closer to the 'classic' PS dual stick
I think
Bob
Bob
@Sathya Eh, always a mouse for me. Then again, I play FPS games a lot more.
@Bob yeah I use the controller just for racing..
and for arcadish games - like Shank/Super Meat boy
@NevinWilliams ello
05:59
ahahaha what. 36-60 years?
oh, scroll down ;p
yeah, I did
72-96 wtf.
Qualification: B.Tech/B.E.,Master of Computer Applications (M.C.A.),Medical (M.S. / M.D.)
... MD?
"Should be good in any Scripting languages like Ruby, PHP, Java"
I think (hope) they mean javascript. o.o
lol
96 years of experience?
they got an original babbage?
Bob
Bob
06:07
> - Good knowledge of DOS and VB Script for system tasks automation.
I wonder if they've heard of PowerShell?
@Bob: that might explain why they need folk with that much experience.
Bob
Bob
lol
> - Should be good in an
Yea...?
In an what?
hahahaha
Bob
Bob
I can't be bothered making sure all those acronyms are actually real.
06:17
I feel like someone should send an email to Rize Corps and ask a few questions about their experience requirements
Bob
Bob
> Hi, I was wondering if you have found any candidates for your job listings. If so, is there any chance I can get in contact with them? I have always wanted to meet a time traveller. Thanks.
Oh man you all need to see this...
"Hi. Considering the normal retirment age in the US is at 67 years, do you feel like you create unrealistic goals for possible future employees?"
@nhinkle as someone said in that reddit post, they won't get anyone even remotely qualified for that job for under 50k/y
06:29
@Leathe oh believe me, I know.
My reaction was basically, "wait - do they think $50k is high for what essentially amounts to director of a 1-man IT dept for a business with 11 locations throughout the state? LOLOLOL GOOD LUCK WITH THAT!"
Titan Quest is like Torchlight except it's much more boring :/
musch older
and the graphics are shite
ya, it's hard to spot things on the ground
And it's a lot more difficult than Torchlight
@nhinkle Now I just want to send in a free form application with "HAHAHAHAHAHHA...." written in comic-sans.
Bob
Bob
06:46
@nhinkle What the...
Bob
Bob
07:21
wtf
ok
here, I have two USB 3.0 Seagate portable HDDs.
one works on all four ports (3x USB 3.0, 1x USB 2.0) on my laptop
the other one works on all ports except the single right USB 3.0 port.
I'm stumped.
now I need to figure out how to use this XML with integration services..
Bob
Bob
Ok, this is just sad.
That's the internal drive.
And that's the USB 3 external.
07:48
:F
Bob
Bob
Keep in mind that the external is a 5400 RPM.
the internal is a 7200 rpm?
Bob
Bob
No idea.
It's a laptop.
Yes, it is.
It's only got a 8 MB buffer, too.
The external has a 16 MB one.
hmm
Bob
Bob
Ouch. Its load/unload cycle count is absolutely atrocious.
Must be that stupid motion sensing crap.
07:54
lol
@Bob read/write speed beats my 7200 rpm internal -_-
@Bob: let me try that on my pre-fail 250gb drive
Bob
Bob
Ya, but the internal has absolutely atrocious speeds.
And it turns out that USB 3.0 is perfectly viable for external HDDs.
gah. I have no idea how to utilize this XML file with SSIS
better go ask the guy who made it ->
cpx
cpx
I just backed up Windows 8 activation using this software.
Should be safe, right?
Bob
Bob
08:12
Uni network :P
That ping...
cpx
cpx
It warns about if I make hardware changes then activation back up won't work.
But hardware changes on laptop? Is it possible?
@Leathe hhhome network ?
no ;P
unfortunately
work :<
Bob
Bob
08:35
Best I've personally seen:
(My home connection is just pitiful :P)
(But I can't really complain in front of @HackToHell)
google fiber speedtest:
now that's internet.
Bob
Bob
@Leathe That's just cheating :P
lol
damn, you're making me wish we signed up for fiber ;p
Bob
Bob
@jokerdino's starred comment is becoming more relevant by the message :P
08:39
jgpjapodkopwakpodwa. stupid reporting services
file:// isn't supported. has to be HTTP://
fffffffffffffffffffff
right. I guess I have to create an embedded xml source then
Bob
Bob
o.O
@Leathe set up some lightweight webserver?
I don't have the permissions to do something like that here :b
I'm just going to make an embedded source
and have it pull the xml from there
Bob
Bob
What kind of permissions?
Technical restriction, or policy?
Because there's a few 'portable' webservers that'll happy just run.
both, I assume. techincal restrictions mostly
Bob
Bob
Oh. You could always chuck it up on a free webhost, assuing no sensitive data.
08:44
ah. well.
it's pretty sensitive data.
and I use "pretty" quite loosely here
Bob
Bob
@Leathe If it's technical restrictions (e.g. no admin privs), you can quite easily run something like Mongoose as long as you can run programs and bind a port.
not gonna run any webservers ;P
Bob
Bob
Ok :P
@Bob :P
we're also using VPNs to connect to the actual sensitive data
and the server doesn't even allow me to connect outside (e.g the internet)
so if I started hosting a webserver, I'm pretty sure somewhere someone would start asking questions :P
Bob
Bob
08:50
Well, 'hosting a webserver' could a strictly local (bind to the loopback address) http server
meh
yeah, but probably not a good idea for an intern to start messing with stuff like that
cpx
cpx
Firefox seems to corrupt my downloads.
Or is it microsoft? I downloaded GenuineCheck.exe two times and each time the checksum was different and so it didn't run. Then I tried IE10 and this time it worked.
@cpx ff never messes up small downloads
cpx
cpx
Just a few days ago, I tried to download a file around 300 MB but the Firefox was finishing the download only at 4 MB.
It was a Graphics driver from HP Site.
Since then I got a little bit suspicious of it.
Btw, I just moved to Firefox after using Opera for about 2 years.
Bob
Bob
09:10
@HackToHell Depends on the network, really.
I haven't had any download corruption in years.
@Leathe Ah, that would be a problem..
cpx
cpx
Now, I'm using IDM. It has always worked for me in the past.
Great that it comes with FF plugin.
@Bob My network link is bad, ff hasn't corrupted a single download ....
DownThemAll has tho
09:28
@HackToHell I have no idea what just happened in that video
I guess a part of it is because my lack of knowledge of what a "strange" is in this case
@Leathe well strange weapons are costly
strange weapons cost about 50-150$
And strange weapons have kill count and rank
right. so that's where the post-it comes in
I see.
Some strange weapons are cheap, usually the bot killer ones
the joke was clearly lost on me :b
my strange sticky <3
09:32
long weapon names are cool
Well you can change the weapon name to anything in tf2 !
cpx
cpx
10:03
I thought I was the administrator until this came up on Windows 8: "You need administrator rights to delete this folder" :P
Bob
Bob
I need to go buy some epoxy :\
@cpx It's UAC.
Basically, you run everything with lower privileges except when explicitly elevating.
So you have to explicitly allow a program before it can modify any critical system files.
cpx
cpx
Oh I see. Yes, well I have noticed that every time I attempt to run or install a program, the laptop screen lights would go dim and I see a message dialogue asking me if I want to really execute a program.
Does anyone here want Arma 3 alpha
for free?
cpx
cpx
Why does it ask every time for the same program which I have ran a hundred times? It's kind of annoying.
It should be able to remember, no?
10:09
@cpx does that for me aswell
Bob
Bob
@cpx No.
not really sure why it doesn't remember
Bob
Bob
It does to specifically to protect you.
That was a fatal flaw with XP.
cpx
cpx
What's the point?
Bob
Bob
You ran any program on XP, and it runs as admin.
Therefore with the capability to modify system files, which ended up being a massive security and stability risk.
cpx
cpx
10:10
I would always want to run the program which I use anyway.
Bob
Bob
facepalm
On one hand, we have Linux users bashing Windows for poor security. On the other, we have Windows users who don't want that security.
for fuck's sake
it's one extra dialog
two keypresses at most
cpx
cpx
So, why click 'Yes' every time for the same program?
Bob
Bob
if you're launching that many programs that often, then you're doing something wrong
@cpx Because you are expected to know when you want escalation. Because remembering automatically is dangerous. And because, if a program really needs to be running all the time, there are other ways to start as admin without user intervention (after the first time).
cpx
cpx
I don't see a reason why would I click 'No' for it if I really want to run it.
Bob
Bob
Because THERE ARE PROGRAMS THAT CAN RUN WITHOUT YOUR KNOWLEDGE
THERE ARE PROGRAMS THAT TRY TO REQUEST ELEVATION WHEN THEY DON'T NEED IT

Q: How to pipe regex with ffmpeg and perl?

Trevor RudolphSo I am trying to get the current frame of the conversion with this bash command: ffmpeg -i fd.mp4 fd.avi < /dev/null 2>&1 | perl -015 -e 'print <STDIN>=~/frame=(\ {3})(\d+)/' | sed "s/ //g" And it actually works quite well except for the fact that it stops after 1 second so it will only run t...

Bob
Bob
THOSE PROGRAMS ARE OFTEN MALICIOUS
cpx
cpx
Oh.
BOLD
<i>hello</i>
BOLD AND ITALIC
cpx
cpx
10:16
I still don't get it :/
is it marckdown in here?
@Leathe yeah, i got one in an giveaway
whats markdown for italics?
10:16
And if you get one, you get an invite too !
two asterisks
Bob
Bob
If it's an argument between having to click one extra button now and then, and having my credentials stolen, my computer compromised, probably without any warning signs and no way to fix it barring a full reinstall, I'll take the slight inconvenience every time.
But then Alpha is basically an extended demo
3 for bold italics. three dashes on either side for strikethrough
cpx
cpx
10:17
How about asking if I want to run the program only if the extension was modified?
@Bob who disabled UAC lol
Bob
Bob
(though, note that UAC isn't perfect. It's a helluva lot better than the alternative.)
cpx
cpx
That sounds reasonable.
@HackToHell: lots of people when it was new ;p
cpx
cpx
Or for a new program that is executing for first time.
Bob
Bob
10:18
For any program you manually launch, an extra two keypresses isn't going to kill you.
cpx
cpx
@Bob :P
Bob
Bob
For programs that need to be automatically launched, there are ways around it.
I launch Everything through tasksched to prevent clicking the UAC box
Bob
Bob
@cpx You would end up spending more time fiddling with security policies and signatures and other crap than you'd spend confirming UAC over half a decade.
@HackToHell Yea, that's one way for automatic launch.
But manual launch? Bah. You're going through the motions of launching the thing anyway.
cpx
cpx
10:20
Tasksched?
There was an SU answer ... trying to find it

Q: Selectively disabling UAC for specific programs on Windows 7

Mehper C. PalavuzlarI have some programs running on start-up like Everything. UAC prompts every time the Windows starts. How can I set a program to make sure that no intervening prompt would appear during start-up?

?
ninjaed ;p
Bob
Bob
Eh, that second answer is incorrect.
RunAsInvoker doesn't bypass UAC. It just doesn't elevate.
Depending on the program, this could break things.
Also, task scheduler only works for automatic start programs.
Which is the only place you would really need it.
could someone please help with this??? superuser.com/questions/608544/…
I use the command line tool (schtasks.exe ) to launch Everything elevated using AHK
10:25
@TrevorRudolph: if someone knew, we'd have answered it by now
> schtasks /run /tn Everything
just create a task with that name ;p
Bob
Bob
@HackToHell Also, on a related note, be very very careful that any place you store this kind of 'automatic' elevation (e.g. AHK script) is set to writable by admins only. Not normal users.
uhm, only my Dad uses my computer
Bob
Bob
And, again, for christ's sake, consider your security. Having your banking password stolen is not fun.
Then there's the myriad of other things that go through most computers.
I don't save that sort of stuff and I usually do banking from a linux VM :P
Bob
Bob
10:28
@HackToHell Banking in a VM means nothing if the host is compromised.
Keyloggers can work at the host kernel level.
Avast FTW ! :P
Bob
Bob
Antivirus programs are typically useless against zero-days and a lot of rootkits.
yes, only last month an stupid fake av got in thanks to vlc -_-
having automatically changing banking password ftw
Bob
Bob
Basically, once you're infected with one, say goodbye to your system and possibly a large chunk of data.
@Leathe Yea, two-factor authentication is one of the best ways :P
But there's still more than enough data on most computers for a breach to be serious. Saved passwords. Possible cached credit card details (and typed credit card details) if you do online shopping. Possible identity theft.
10:31
Even then Credit/Debit cards are not secured
Bob
Bob
Yea, I'm in full paranoia mode today.
why ? :P
Did you get a virus or something
Bob
Bob
No particular reason :P
It's just... annoying... seeing people be so lax about security.
Altho, I've only had a major virus on my computer (that I know of) once
but I mostly blame Vista for that one ;P
Apparently NSA gets data about 0-days even before the patch is released
So NSA could easily infect us all
10:33
So NSA has easily infected us all*
/me blames NSA for @bob's paranoia
didn't even know that was a thing
@Leathe You didn't know about fluoride in your water?
Here it comes
10:38
not sure if they do water fluoridation here
@Leathe They do it everywhere
@OliverSalzburg Tinfoil standby...
It's kinda like a standard ;p
/me beats @Boris_yo
complete with a pdf \o/ viewzone.com/50-reasons.pdf
ah, apparently it was under 0,1 mg/l here, tho
10:41
@HackToHell You beat me?
@Leathe Israel stops fluoridation this year so my pineal gland will start cleaning finally and I can meditate more optimally.
k
didn't know meditation had min-maxing
@Leathe People advice on decalcifying pineal gland because it is also responsibe for prodiction of melatonin and endorphins.
@Boris_yo: why are you even drinking tap water ?
You need to drink rainwater, god knows what they add to the water supply!
10:58
Oh Emm Gee! I see the light now after looking into the fluoride topic in Germany
There have actually been TWO cases of severe effects!
And they were 2 children in the same household where they have been given fluoride supplements
@JourneymanGeek Distillation is what makes water pure again. Water gets heated, then it evaporates in the air leaving all contaminants behind and then settles in another container.
@Boris_yo: of course, chemtrails...
so...
You obviously need to distill your own piss.
