@OliverSalzburg hunks? what?
You see that "Stage Hunk" button on the right?
oh. a "hunk" is a set of contiguous changes?
When you commit, you can select parts of the change for each file and cherrypick your desired commit
@allquixotic I think so, yes. I'm not too sure about the correct definition
Come to think of it, that's actually where the [y,n,q,a,d,/,K,g,e,?]? was from :D
Bob
Bob
@OliverSalzburg yup! :D
@WilliamHilsum well, the best thing to do would be to have them on separate subnets :P
What kind of VPN is this?
If it's OpenVPN, i believe most configs specifically have a command to route the local subnet through the local gateway... which you would need to override
(or just change the routing table manually :P)
A problem exists! Please guess the correct key to correct it: [~,1,!,2,@,3,#,4,$,5,%,6,^,7,&,8,*,9,(,0,),-,_,=,+,q,Q,w,W,e,E,r,R,t,T,y,Y,u,U,i,I,o,O,p,P,[,{,],},\,|,a,A,s,S,d,D,f,F,g,G,h‌,H,j,J,k,K,l,L,;,:,',",z,Z,x,X,c,C,v,V,b,B,n,N,m,M,,,<,.,>,/,?]?
Bob
Bob
14:19
:P
?
(it would have helped it it were clearer about ? meaning help, since it's not all that obvious amongst all the other characters)
@Bob yeah; usually ? means Just delete my entire git repository without any further confirmation!
Bob
Bob
I wouldn't be surprised
Bob
Bob
I've come across a couple of [y/n] prompts that break completely if you enter anything else
Hopefully git is better than those
but with that jumble... :P
is listening to Glitch Mob over his home theater system while working from home
14:22
I totally can't do that
the LFR only likes classical ;p
You mean your dog only likes classical. :P
BASS
Music like this is better felt. :)
14:23
little furry roomate
lol
I have one of those old creative subs
the ones that rumble suprisingly well
I have a Denon 5.1 receiver and Boston Acoustic speakers.
And they sound fantastic.
amusingly, I have a cheap, third hand pair of altec lansings on my desktop
a old creative on my desktop
i hate intense bass :3
is pondering monitors at some point
My LFR is currently at the groomers. And later this afternoon, will be at the vet. :P
14:25
@allquixotic: bass is like salt, you want JUST ENOUGH most of the time
@allquixotic I hate farty bass. I love smooth bass. :)
@BenRichards: so no beats for you? ;p
The best description I've heard of crappy subwoofers was "fart cannons"
@JourneymanGeek I like beats too, but I'm a fan of smoooooooth
@JourneymanGeek by that logic, most people take a full 2 LB bag of salt out of their cupboard and smother a cheese sandwich in it or they can't eat it
14:26
(most people have way too much bass)
@allquixotic: some people seem to!
Bass has to be felt, but not overpowering :)
i like ringing trebel more
but I'm a headphone guy so meh ;p
14:26
The Glitch Mob has beats but also, smoooooth bass :)
Headphones are nice but you can't feel music in your chest with them :P
@BenRichards: LFR!
Bob
Bob
@allquixotic Best. Analogy. Ever.
also most of the sound stuff in my place is crap ;p
@JourneymanGeek I know :)
Hehe
I mean, you DO know the story about my parent's sound system, right?
Bob
Bob
14:28
nope
cost a grand, plays tapes. NO BASS AT ALL.
@JourneymanGeek It's been a while... kinda?
Right. :|
ended up hooking up a 30 dollar DVD player
Bob
Bob
eh
You know, I think I spent about $750 on my 5.1 receiver + speakers (it was a home theater in a box kind of setup)
14:28
best part is? We ended up getting what I told my dad to get for recording, and it was a lot better
Bob
Bob
I don't like overly bassy music, but it's worse when the speakers distort it
Its made by a company called martin roland
don't bother googling it ;p
@BenRichards: I KNOW, its overpriced
@JourneymanGeek I'm sorry
Bob
Bob
14:29
or, in the case of my laptop with reasonable hardware speakers, when the fucked up equaliser driver kills it
not 'my' money
also, its... LOUD
and I mean, if I turn it up to 3-4 it can be physically painful
it does up to 11 10
I turn the equalizer thingies off on my tablet and phone.
It makes everything sound crappy.
equalizers are, ewww
Bob
Bob
14:30
@BenRichards did I tell you the story of Beats?
At least, with decent speakers/headphones, it does.
@Bob No, but I know about them and have heard them.
Bob
Bob
@BenRichards My laptop. HP. Sound driver came with some Beats equaliser.
@BenRichards: I've actually given up on setting up a portable system that lives up to my home gear's quality
;p
@JourneymanGeek :P
Bob
Bob
When enabled, it amps up the bass.
The best part?
14:31
I'm streaming music from my phone over bluetooth to the home theater.
(and not counting the new headphones, it was cheap!)
Bob
Bob
When disabled, it sets the bass to minimum and treble to maximum
@Bob WTF
Bob
Bob
good ol' sabotage
Kill that shiz
Bob
Bob
14:31
@BenRichards and it does that every boot
it's built into the fucking driver
I think my HTC comes with a beats equaliser
which I can't seem to find the settings for ;p
Bob
Bob
I complain about it here monthly :P
sad thing is, I have perfectly good Beats Wireless headphones that might be (?) enhanced by using the Beats EQ, but it doesn't come on my phone D:
I use some generic equalizer app instead
@allquixotic: beats... perfectly good? ;p
Bob
Bob
which usually coincides with me restarting my laptop and everything sounding crap for a few days
14:33
@JourneymanGeek I just hit it with attenuation on the lower bands and it sounds good
tho, I was tempted to root through the ex-demo bin of the headphone store for something I can cannibalise to fix the headband of my M50 >_>
although admittedly my Sennheiser monitoring headphones do give better ringing treble
Bob
Bob
@BenRichards Apparently the 'logic' behind it is that you, ahem, hear how much Beats improves your audio experience when enabled
(which is the only way I'd buy a skullcandy or beats)
Bob
Bob
by comparing it to the absolute worst settings
manually resetting everything to 0 works out well enough, but it gets sabotaged at boot, so...
14:34
@Bob Yeah, lame.
I didn't have the $599 out of pocket for the premium Sennheiser bluetooth headset. D:
OH
you guys reminded me of something
Bob
Bob
@allquixotic Isn't Beats supposed to be good for bass or something? :S
It's disabled (grayed out) since I'm over bluetooth atm.
@Bob oh yes, quite good
14:35
lol
Bob
Bob
all you guys with the good headphones :P
@Bob: beats is basically a pound of salt over your cheese toastie
@Bob: funny thing that
Bob
Bob
I think my current pair cost me ~$1.50
My big audiophile period was when I couldn't build computers
14:35
@Bob: the pair I want is just under 300 bucks
Bob
Bob
:P
Bob
Bob
my 'good' pair is some USB headset. cheap logitech thing, I think it was about $40
$1.50 for a pair of headphones?! what are they, two cans of Spaghetti O's with a string between them?
This is all I got on my Sony. But the good news is the Clear Phase thing isn't bad sounding (I think it's just "turn everything off").
Bob
Bob
14:36
@allquixotic well, I guess earbuds is the term nowadays
more like earfails -- they fall right out of my ears... I think I have alien ears
(I also have a 150 dollar external soundcard, and that's pretty cheap for what it does. Waiting on a 45 dollar amp... which is reasonably priced, in the cherry qq sorta way)
@allquixotic: what style do you use?
Bob
Bob
@allquixotic I hate the in-ear ones :\
@JourneymanGeek I've tried all possible styles of earbuds, even high quality ones
earbuds. fall. out. of. my. ears. always
I have problems with the old iphone style ones (with a flat thing)
Bob
Bob
14:37
it's a real pain to find good traditional earbuds
like instantly as soon as i let my hand go
the sort with rubber inserts work
Bob
Bob
@JourneymanGeek those are in-ear
then again i don't want something jammed into my ear canal either
Bob
Bob
again, I'm the outlier :P
14:38
ANNOYINGLY, the one pair I like costs 2 dollars and is randomly in stock
eh,
@allquixotic: I prefer cans ;p
I like on-ear headphones
its just impractical a lot of the time, and my cans arn't in any shape to be worn outside right now
there are "over-ear" ones too but I like "on-ear"
both my sennheisers and my beats are on-ear, and very comfortable to wear... comfort isn't the issue, the excessive bass in the beats is the only issue i have with them
14:39
I got used to over ear cause of the old creatives
Bob
Bob
Beats disabled constantly sets that at -12/+4 (min/max)
switched from them, to sennheiser, to AT (which rocks) ;p
kinda waffling on trying out customs
i like my sennheisers so much that i spent about $46 to repair them 3.5 years into their life... replaced the cup cushions and the steel cable (somehow I managed to cut it)
just not my thing, and way expensive/complex
lol
@allquixotic: god, I do NOT mind replacing cables
the headband on my headphones are flaking off tho
these headphones are completely modular
14:40
and there's no obvious way to replace it
every individual piece can be ordered from Sennheiser and replaced
Bob
Bob
enabled, it's +4/+4
I think it's much cheaper to order replacement parts as they break than to keep buying a whole new headset
contacted audiotechnica about that
what model?
@Bob Aw.
Bob
Bob
14:41
(that's just the basic audio driver controls; Beats has its own program which I've been trying and failing to remove)
I know a lot of them have the same physical platform, but different sound
Oh hey, my supervisor let me open source a tool I developed for work :P
It's all in Perl.
the HD202 has the same external design, but sounds fartily bassy
unless, wierdly, I use a bassy source or amp
14:42
@JourneymanGeek Sennheiser HD25-1 II
I'm quite proud of it. :3 But it could be better!
is what I have
(like the fiio e3)
@BenRichards Neat. But I have no use for something like that :D
14:43
@OliverSalzburg Well it's language agnostic. But yeah. It's used for all our verification :)
those are supposed to be pretty good
@BenRichards didn't you know? Perl is write-only; open sourcing it is no better than shipping a binary ;-)
Perl and regex have that quality
@allquixotic Haha. I actually try to make my code readable and maintainable
14:44
@BenRichards I don't even have a Perl installation on my system and I usually only use unit tests in my .Net projects where I have the ReSharper Visual Studio integration
I always use use strict; as a rule.
@OliverSalzburg It's only tested in Linux anyway, since that's what our tool chain lives on.
Could be interesting to construct unit tests for my typo3scripts project :\
My perl code actually is pretty dang legible, IMO.
It's not crap like others'. And I comment as a habit. Comments are part of the code to me. :P
Bob
Bob
14:46
package is... still sitting at the Sydney receiving facility
wtf
it's been a full week
@Bob How has the SFW Oneboxing script been going btw?
Bob
Bob
@OliverSalzburg completely ignoring it :P
I'll have to pick it up this weekend. or something.
14:47
@Bob: no new word on either thing I am waiting on ;p
Bob
Bob
approaching end of semester exams :\
Ok, I have to shower before I pick my dog up from the groomers'.
And then, probably lunch.
Bob
Bob
also, in the process of creating a minesweeper game :P
so much to do, so little time...
Yay!
Oh, you guys should check out my latest version of Tetris :P
I made some changes to the controls that makes the game unplayable but kind of funny
Bob
Bob
o.O
14:50
Also, I fixed the hit detection
I'll upload a binary :P
Bob
Bob
I'm still trying to figure out how to map mouseclicks to squares :P
I'm stupid when it comes to things like this
@Bob What language/API?
Bob
Bob
@BenRichards C#/WinForms/GDI+
should be really easy
just gotta make sure the square bondaries i'll be adding soon don't interfere
14:52
@Bob Aha
Here's the latest build of my Tetris game: mega.co.nz/…
Bob
Bob
mega? o.O
Yup :P
I signed up. It's actually pretty slick.
@Bob indexX = x / ( widthOfSquare + widthOfGridLine )
Also, I can direct-link files. Skydrive cannot. :/
Bob
Bob
@OliverSalzburg yea, it's simple enough with a grid like this
but I am planning to actually draw a grid, which I'll have to factor in
14:54
Hmm...
> Caution: MEGA's cryptographic security model depends on the confidentiality of the keys displayed above. Avoid transmitting them through insecure channels!
Bob
Bob
@BenRichards I've taken to hosting my own files :P
I'm not sure what to make of that.
@Bob Well, I don't have a personal server :P
Bob
Bob
It's a $15/yr VPS :P
I was going to shower...
Ok, be back in a bit!
Bob
Bob
I'm trying my best to use as many VPSes as possible
14:55
Oh, by the way, the controls for tetris are z=rotate left, x=rotate right, arrow keys=move accordingly
Bob
Bob
I have far too many sitting idle :\
And ESC=quit
Bob
Bob
@BenRichards any plans for space to rotate?
@BenRichards Interesting...
Bob
Bob
or up to rotate?
I can't remember standard tetris controls
14:56
@Bob Nope. That'll be drop instantly.
My favorite part about it is that you can move pieces up ;D
@OliverSalzburg Yup :P
Bob
Bob
(also, wasn't @allquixotic planning to give RA some testing space? :P)
I find rotation quite hilarious :P
Bob
Bob
@BenRichards oh yea, I remember now
14:56
Actually, I'll probably make the controls completely remappable.
Just like how I did in my QBasic version.
Anyways, now I go shower!
@Bob yeah that's in the works eventually :D this weekend maybe if i have time
will be setting aside an openvz container for it, probably debian 7
@Bob I would appreciate it if you could never show me anything like this ever again, thank you ((I'm kidding. but my brain is also aching))
Bob
Bob
:P
sorry
my brain was already numb by the first time I came across that
I discovered email addresses could have comments
not just comments, but nested comments
at this point, I wouldn't be surprised if someone told me an email address could be a turing-complete language
wut? email addresses can have comments?!?!
4
Bob
Bob
that was my reaction :P
> Comments are allowed with parentheses at either end of the local part; e.g. "john.smith(comment)@example.com" and "(comment)[email protected]" are both equivalent to "[email protected]".
15:13
Does @Kruug lurk chat?
I wonder how many email-parsing regexes or substring matching algorithms are out there in production code that would break with comments in them
bob(pedant)@superuser.com
Bob
Bob
@allquixotic apparently all the regex ones, for nested comments
most reject + addresses already
Oh god.
That's one absurd regex.
@Bob that would be an enormous security hole
None of mine ever got that bad :P
15:19
you can't tell whether a turing machine halts until you run it. so, to properly "run" (is that the right word?) an email address that was turing complete, you'd have to run it possibly forever, so you could DDoS a mail server by emailing it "From:" as many addresses as it has cores
or the mail server would have to just give up on attempting to run/parse the email address after a certain amount of CPU time was elapsed, but I don't think any existing implementations would bother with something like that
This is the worst regex in my tool:
m/^\s*define\s+(\w+\s+)?\w+=.*\s*$/
Not nearly that bad. :P
@BenRichards that perl regex was computer generated, which makes it even less readable
@allquixotic Yeah, that doesn't help.
BTW, my Surface Pro is awesome :D
@allquixotic Yay! Can I have it? :D
15:22
@BenRichards /me punches
D:
Still though, pretty awesome. :)
I'm jealous of the size/form factor. I mean, my VAIO works as a tablet well enough, but it's still like carrying around a mini laptop :P
I'm still on my "new device" high, so I'm pretty sure I'm still ignoring its flaws, but so far it's awesome
But it has a keyboard built-in, so that's gonna happen.
nods
I gotta go pick up my dog!
I'll be back in a few
@BenRichards apparently, the Surface Pro underwent several design revisions internally (ok, tons of design revisions) to get the best tradeoff between weight and battery life, which was one of the toughest decisions to make
for me, it's just BARELY light enough to be comfortable to hold, and that may be owing to the fact that I'm male and somewhat brawny (not muscular like a pitcher, just meaty :P); I imagine people who are smaller/more frail would consider it entirely too heavy to hold as a tablet unless it were laying flat on a desk
the touchscreen is fantastic at detecting what I'm trying to tap on, even in desktop mode. I think you mentioned that in your review of the Vaio. well the S Pro does it just as well. 1920x1080 IPS. very bright and vibrant.
I installed Start8 and ModernMix to make desktop mode a bit easier to use, but I also tried out some Modern UI apps, and now I'm addicted to the built-in Mail app instead of gmail's web mail
15:29
just got that email from Raxco marketing
I'm like... noooooooooooooooooooooooo don't you dare
Bob
Bob
@allquixotic D:<
@allquixotic is... that a windows marketing thing? :P
Sounds like group policy
Bob
Bob
and it's almost guaranteed that at least one user will know enough to make your life hard
or at the very least circumvent whatever policies
@Tanner Raxco
Bob
Bob
whoops
the earlier link was broken
it requires .NET 4
15:35
url not ending in .com; leary to click
Bob
Bob
@allquixotic that's my domain :P
you could go with the VPS link, if you wanted
that ends in .com
@Bob .tk for tinkerer?
Bob
Bob
@allquixotic :S
where does elu come from
Bob
Bob
shhh
:P
15:36
?!
Bob
Bob
don't worry about it :D
now I'm going to worry about it even more
Bob
Bob
my github account is a big clue
which reminds me, I need to clean this code up and push it to github
ah, scre it, I'll do it tomorrow
...fine, I'll do itn ow :P
Bob
Bob
be warned, it's horribly messy
I don't know what I was thinking with teh Cell classes. that'll need to be redone
the rest is some crap I patched together an hour ago to have something working. again, needs a lot of cleaning
hmm.. two ways to deal with/prevent first-click-death
shift the mine to the upper left, as the MS version apparently did
or just generate mines on first click and leave that spot out
hmm
Bob
Bob
woah
@BenRichards nice!
Nohmul (or Noh Mul) is a pre-Columbian Maya archaeological site located on the eastern Yucatán Peninsula, in what is today northern Belize. Nohmul was occupied initially during the Preclassic era of Mesoamerican chronology (c. to ). By the 5th century monumental construction at the site had effectively ceased, and the site seems to have been largely abandoned save for some scattered rural-domestic activities. After a hiatus in construction activities of several centuries, Nohmul was reoccupied and large-scale building resumed, with maximal activity seen during the Late Classic (c. 7th–10t...

oh god... a coworker asked about unicode characters
he was asking how to make egyptian hieroglyphs in a VBA UserForm text box
...it doesn't support unicode version 5.2
Bob
Bob
uhhhhhhh?
15:54
Unicode is a computing industry standard for the consistent encoding, representation and handling of text expressed in most of the world's writing systems. Developed in conjunction with the Universal Character Set standard and published in book form as The Unicode Standard, the latest version of Unicode contains a repertoire of more than 110,000 characters covering 100 scripts. The standard consists of a set of code charts for visual reference, an encoding methodology and set of standard character encodings, a set of reference data computer files, and a number of related items, such as c...
revision 5.2 supports well over 100k characters
Bob
Bob
why the fuck do you need hieroglyphics in VBA?
@Bob we don't
we were just trying to document what possible allowable characters there are
Bob
Bob
-_-
i'm just surprised that unicode goes past 65,536 characters now
Bob
Bob
of course it has
otherwise UTF-32 would be totally pointless
15:57
i guess with variable number of bytes allowed in UTF-8, you could theoretically have a single character comprise 1TB of data
that'd break a lot of for loops

Q: Does kernel run everytime?

Lakmal Deshapriya As i know, kernel is a process. so it works in some time Quantum. but i have heard that kernel works every time.so how we can say kernel works every time?

I don't even
also, that suggested edit might be a misinterpretation
@Bob I think he's saying it works by getting slices of the CPU so he's asking if it only gets some slices how is it "always" running
and yeah, unless you have a RTOS, the kernel doesn't get to eat 100% CPU, even a kernel thread will get context switched eventually
Bob
Bob
uhh
@Sathya
we were just discussing that
