kronos on March 14, 2013

I recently moved to a bigger city, and of course the first thing that I setup was my internet connection.  I’ve had the same ISP for a couple of years now, and they’ve been alright.  I’ve noticed drops in service here and there but overall it was a tolerable experience.  However, as soon as I started watching my online shows in the new place, I noticed some dramatic changes in my viewing experience.  There were long periods of waiting for the shows to buffer, and I felt like I was relapsing to my younger days of dial-up.  I got so frustrated one night I even tweeted about it: …

06:59
@JourneymanGeek yea
wait, no
..I think you'd want a host-only network for that
or a bridged one
bridging worked
/me is looking for alternative newsreaders
prolly gonna end up setting up tinytinyrss at some point
07:43
this is new
Yay. More incentives to close.
Bob
Bob
@Sathya what's new about it?
the /5? :\
@Bob yeah, the (full) count wasn't shown
Bob
Bob
@slhck how does that offer more incentives to close?
@JourneymanGeek that LED has given up and died :P
08:00
blah
this is proving more annoying than I thought
@Bob Well, you contribute to a number rising :p I wasn't being entirely serious though
@Bob: ahh, kinda makes sense ;p
Bob
Bob
08:16
@slhck you always did?
wasn't the number of close votes always shown?
just not the /5 bit?
08:29
@Bob the number of votes casted was shown, but not how much was required to close
now that extra calculation is no longer needed.. might act as a push ("ooh, one more vote reqd to close, lemme do it")
@HackToHell: we've been complaining about ti all day
I've already tried two desktop RSS feeders I don't like
and most of the web based ones people suggest have been crippled by the load ;p
I eventually got the one @Sathya suggested working, but the free tier is too limited for me :/
Bob

09:12
I used to use Thunderbird for RSS
then I just gave up on feeds
I think reader's the main site I use on the internet
@JourneymanGeek Same. Looking for alternatives, now.
@skunkfrukt: I'm currently setting up greatnews temporarily, its got a 2 pane format
then, I tried rssowl, and rss bandit, but both have issues
oh, and trying to spin up a VM to try tinytinyrss and Lilina ;p
@JourneymanGeek newsblur, you mean?
@skunkfrukt tried theoldreader?
I created an account, but it won't let me import anything right now.

Q: Alternatives for Google Reader

Al EverettNow that Google Reader is being retired, what are my options for consuming RSS feeds on the web and synchronizing with my Android device? Social media sharing is not as important to me as being able to keep up with many disparate sites/feeds in a single place and for the data to be stored in the ...

wtf. computer shut itself down from hibernation O__O
@Sathya: trying a few
oldreader looks good, but they turned off importing for now
Damn you Windows Update!
@jokerdino wh00t
@JourneymanGeek Just back from school :P
09:47
hmm
any free benchmarking tool for mac?
09:59
hmm what was that called
@Bibhas: I vaguely remember cinebench had an OS X version
any mods around? superuser.com/users/207046/liza This user is tickling off my spidey sense.
if its video card testing, throw one of the unigene benchmarks at it
@JourneymanGeek BAM! Hit him with the spice weasel!
Damn, couldn't flag him !
The lastest ff beta is really sluggish :(
Bob
Bob
@HackToHell 20?
10:12
yeah 20.xx
Bob
Bob
that's been semi-stable for a while.. it's probably similar to 19 in terms of performance?
perhaps an addon? high memory usage? something?
It updated from 20.xx ro 20.(xx+1) day before yesterday or something now it's super sluggish
Bob
Bob
try the FF profiler
@Bob Didn't install anything new only ^^ happend
Bob
Bob
if you can identify something specific, file a bug report quickly
@HackToHell you updated the browser
there's a chance one of your existing addons is not fully compatible
10:14
@JourneymanGeek Google+ Pro Tip: Create a single-photo gallery for the images you put in a post. Makes them look more nice-like :D
Could be, will try ff profiler
Bob
Bob
> Switch to the nightly build or build with ac_add_options --enable-profiling (optimization recommended to get accurate profiling).
:S
gah, need to shift to nightly :(
Bob
Bob
or build it yourself?
or maybe see if you can grab a nightly copy of your current version?
or just try running the profiler, perhaps it works on Beta anyway :P
Doesn't work ;p going to switch to nightly
Bob
Bob
10:19
that's the nightly build of 20.0b5
try to grab the equivalent to your current copy?
thanks :D saved me from googling ;p
@Bob i prolly have 20.0b5 as ff says that I have the latest verison
Bob
Bob
@HackToHell it should list the specific version number :P
also, try clearing your profile
about:buildconfig this does tho
@Bob I think it's because of my overly large history file ;p
@JourneymanGeek Looks good. will try. Thanks. :)
Bob
Bob
@JourneymanGeek try newslike.comeze.com
:P
Bob
Bob
it's a little thing a friend created for a project.. I can't remember how complete it is
@HackToHell ?
@OliverSalzburg I tend to be super random about those >_>
@HackToHell s/nightly/chrome/
Firefox's performance has been horrible lately.
And have you figured out why ? You would have done so by now
@Bob I am trying to find out what it is ;p
@Bob: no import option
at the moment the old reader is the closest to what I want, but I can't import feeds in it yet
Bob
Bob
10:33
@JourneymanGeek it was written more or less from scratch in his spare time :P
@Bob: well, blah ;p
it also made me solve a captcha for some wierd reason
okay ff profiler is weird ;p
Bob
Bob
lol
@JourneymanGeek if you actually want to use it, we can hack up an import script XD
Ah ! it's like that Windows Performance monitor
10:38
@Bob: an OPML import script is pretty much essential here
one issue I have is I have FAR too many feeds on google reader to actually prune ;p
Bob
Bob
so.. uhh.. take a look at the UI, do you actually want to use it? :P
this was never really released or anything, it's been sitting there for a year
looks like spammers are getting to grips with Stack Exchange's suggested edit system superuser.com/review/suggested-edits/93418 superuser.com/review/suggested-edits/93419
one momment
let me import something and see
Bob
Bob
@Sathya O.O
ohshit
waiiit
one approval?
oh, OP approval
yes, because it's OP
Bob
Bob
10:40
well, that would be quite obvious (and it would be bumped), wouldn't it?
lol
its not wworking for me
@JourneymanGeek Don't like feedly ?
Feedly is ok, but it's too slow ;p
Bob
Bob
@JourneymanGeek :\
@HackToHell: Don't like the UI
I wouldn't move off reader if they weren't killing it off
@Bob yep, but still..
10:41
so basically I want reader, just not
You can customize it tho ;p
Bob
Bob
works for me if you just add a feed, like http://rss.feedsportal.com/c/34697/fe.ed/feeds.smh.com.au/rssheadlines/top.xml
getting a vm up
@Bob: added the serverfault feed ;p
it tells me it was added, but I don't see it
And steam is taking forever to launch tf2 ;p
Bob
Bob
10:42
hm
I've forgotten how to get the feed addresses for SE
:P
not too bad
I'd use it if I didn't find anything with inline images ;p
Bob
Bob
@JourneymanGeek are you talking about newslike?
ya
it gets things nearly right ;p
Bob
Bob
ok.. lemme know if you do want to use it and we'll move it to a proper server :P
(and that import thing)
Bob
Bob
10:46
@JourneymanGeek url? or, how do you get a link? :P
add a /feeds at the end
Bob
Bob
o.O
I'm probably going to end up with the old reader
so don't trust me to stick around, unless you want feature suggestions XDXDXD
Bob
Bob
uhh... no one's actually using it, but if you actually want something added, sure :P
@JourneymanGeek http://serverfault.com/questions/feeds?
oh. found it.
this is for @JourneymanGeek blog.superfeedr.com/state-of-readers
10:55
;)
@Sathya: I'm also gonna try a few of the self hosted ones
might toss it on my lil old atom box or raspi or something ;p
@JourneymanGeek newsblur is FOSS.. but requires tons of servers :P
@Sathya: too complex! ;p
there's a tinytinyrss package in Ubuntu 12.10
Is that new?
It's glorious! Now I'll always know that it takes 5 votes \o/

@JourneymanGeek apparently lacks atom support :(
I'm seriously tempted to redo my VPS setup ;p
Bob
Bob
@JourneymanGeek why?
11:06
quite a lot of things I want to change ;p
the only thing I have is a wiki that uses flat file storage
so I could swap for a lighter web server, going to offload the DB anyway...
Bootstrap has been overused too much. Was getting bored of that UI. Hopefully, 3 would look fresh for sometime.
11:24
Yay, Google Takout worked \o/
Sweet. All my Latitude data in one JSON file
ugh
I installed tt-rss....
only I have no idea how to use it
its not in /var/www for starters
what are those two seal doing there?
is that the same guy in disguise? o_O
12:12
@OliverSalzburg: ooh, I just remembered I had an album of pix of my current system
@JourneymanGeek Seen it
added new pix ;p
(which I should have done instead of sticking it on a post ._.)
Alright, now I'm up-to-date again :D
XD
next up, speakers, and maybe a monitor. NO IDEA where I'll find space for either ;p
Yeah, space! That would be something! :D
12:19
lol
Was tempted to stick the speakers on wallmounts
but I can't really do that without taking down the stuff on the wall
13:04
It's snowy
cool.(literally). Reminds me of day after tomorrow movie
13:42
@OliverSalzburg nice
@studiohack It's still going O__O
14:15
Hey!
@OliverSalzburg That's what's going on in my neighbouring country?
Night and day much
@BloodPhilia What the... :D
Well, it's looking a bit brighter on my end now as well
So bright in fact, that I had to close the shades
Snow is blindingly reflective :P
@OliverSalzburg I can imagine :P
bit of a diversion to get to work today -_- someone was struck by a car and killed on the inner loop of the beltway right in my way
"But we were delayed en route when a Stingray in front of us killed a pedestrian."
14:29
Oh gezz, hit and run too?
they don't know
availability of my coworkers at this time is extremely spotty
some are here, but a lot are still out there on the beltway because they didn't take the alternate route
@Tanner car or fish?
car
It's from fear and loathing
;p
the fish did in the crocodile hunter
ahahaha
14:35
a loss of one life can cause millions of gallons of fuel to be wasted
(all the fuel burned idling / moving in low gear / traveling longer routes to get around the closure)
I hate it when I can't find that picture of the guy who is annoyed about the sunlight :(
14:47
@OliverSalzburg is it a "Y U NO" meme?
@allquixotic Nah. People love to use it around new years, with fireworks in the window
I could probably do a Y U NO meme for my 1st world problems getting to work this morning

Q: Periodical Internet connection loss with TP-LINK 4300 router

reykjaviI have an issue with my TP-LINK TL-WDR4300 router. Since I bought it, I had some issues with connectivity, but after I disabled the hardware NAT option and reflashed the firmware to the same latest version, everything went ok for the long 2 months. I actually haven't had any problems with it unti...

I would imagine that if his internet connection is IP-over-Periodical, he'd have fairly high latency, so let's hope he responds to us in about 6 months time
Periodical literature (also called a periodical publication or simply a periodical) is a published work that appears in a new edition on a regular schedule. The most familiar examples are the newspaper, often published daily, or weekly; or the magazine, typically published weekly, monthly or as a quarterly. Other examples would be a newsletter, a literary journal or learned journal, or a yearbook. These examples are typically published and referenced by volume and issue. "Volume" typically refers to the number of years the publication has been circulated, and "Issue" refers to how many t...

I could have guessed
the probability of any picture on the internet involving a cat is about 80%
reuploaded.
15:32
i.stack.imgur is a godsend
@allquixotic Would kill to be able to greenshot directly to it.
I'd settle for directly being to paste for i.stack.imgur
like you can on the main site if you dig a bit
chat is kind of neglected by the developers once they got it to an okay state
they probably figure that a small percentage of the SE users ever touch chat, so they should apply a proportionately small percentage of their developer hours to it
Call me crazy. I just proposed a site for Google glass on area51. D:
@jokerdino you're crazy
15:43
Thanks. a bit of relief.
it hasn't even been released yet
not even for early adopters
yeah, i might have jumped a little too early.
won't Glass use Android anyway?
googleglass.SE would have enormous overlap between Android.SE, Unix.SE and SU if so
my intuition is that, since Glass is the first device of its kind, it will really suck and have lots of limitations, but the concept of it will swirl around silicon valley for a few years and then someone (Apple? Google themselves? Microsoft?) will polish it to something that your slightly tech-savvy mom will want to use
maybe Google Glass 2 or 3 will be good, or Microsoft Window Pane or Apple iEyes will be good
Augmented reality from Yahoo.
I just hope it doesn't flop and we end up waiting another decade before somebody will try again...

@allquixotic I'm hoping they'll actually name theirs eyePhone

Q: Why does Linux still use Tar?

MarcusJI know that tar was made for tape archives back in the day, but what's the point now? Modern compression standards can handle multiple files, so all it does it waste time in having to decompress it?

@allquixotic Heh, I was thinking about closing that one myself :D
yeah, let's close a general question with good explanatory answers
@allquixotic Just formulate a similar question that isn't NC and post it as a self-answer
16:51
that question sucks but it could just be edited to be more specific -- the OP doesn't really know what he's talking about but the answers really do
@allquixotic True
So edit the question and flag for reopen
Ya
> but what's the point now? Modern compression standards can handle multiple files, so all it does it waste time in having to decompress it?
Remove all that and add in something else :P
The whole "Linux uses tar" part is just bad
That's like asking "Why does Windows still use WinZIP?"
Good point.
> I know that tar was made for tape archives back in the day
There's the good bit :P
Yeah
So, in my mind, the question boils down to "This tool that was written a long time ago still exists, why?"
16:55
@Tanner, I've found out (part of) the answer to my own question you had set a bounty on: superuser.com/questions/561268/…
@RudáAlmeida ah good =D
@Tanner There are 3 0-voted answers, including my own. What happens to the bounty in this case?
I could accept something like "What is the advantage of using 'tar' today?"
Not that I cares about bountises... No my precious.... Me not wants nasty bountises....
already awarded it :P
16:58
@Tanner Whee.... @Tanner is a good master, yes, gollum gollum

Q: Why does Linux still use Tar?

MarcusJI know that tar was made for tape archives back in the day, but today we have archive file formats that both aggregate files and perform compression within the same logical file format. Questions: Is there a performance penalty during the aggregation/compression/decompression stages for using ...

@allquixotic Yeah, I got your "an edit has been made to this post" :P
Is saying "RAID array" redundant?

A: What is the advantage of using 'tar' today?

allquixoticPart 1: Performance Here is a comparison of two separate workflows and what they do. You have a file on disk blah.tar.gz which is, say, 1 GB of gzip-compressed data which, when uncompressed, occupies 2 GB (so a compression ratio of 50%). The way that you would create this, if you were to do ar...

Jesus Christ I went overboard... hopefully that's a canonical enough answer though
@allquixotic Y U NO use 4 space indent for code?
@Tanner I have a redundant, independent RAID disk array
4
@OliverSalzburg edit plz <3
In any case, I just learned that we have 28 sets of RAID5 in our iSeries.
Does that... sound weird to anyone else?
@Tanner Yes. Permission to bang your head on the wall is granted.
Thank you.
17:11
@allquixotic Done.
@OliverSalzburg thankies :D
I like those blocks slightly better, the full-width background often provides additional structure to the post IMHO
I think the original OP poster (I like this redundant acronym thing!!!) was thinking of my "Way 1" and complaining about that
Your answer is already starting to percolate. I wonder if it will go above Kruug's?
17:15
@allquixotic We should create a 3-letter TLA acronym for it!
it's kind of an amalgamation of other answers, but the main thing I contributed new that isn't already there previously in the existing posts (I'm being very intentionally and deliberately redundant now) is Part 1 about Performance
@RudáAlmeida maybe we could call it Redundant REA Expansion of Acroynms

can anyone out here guide me in c#

@Akshay if you have a SPECIFIC question, you can ask it on Stack Overflow.

how can i do that so?

@Akshay Do you know anything at all about the Excel Automation API? Have you successfully set up the .NET Office automation bindings?
I don't know how far you've gotten or what you've successfully done so far, so I don't know where to start.
can u help me with using solver functions through my C3.net applications interface
@Akshay So what you'll need to do is to instantiate a new instance of the Excel.Application in the background; hide it from the user so they don't see it by setting Visible property to False; insert your worksheet function formulas into cells using the Range API; then get the value out using the Value property.
If you don't know how to do that, then you need to answer the questions I asked above before I can give you any more help.
