Wow, 2 of my neighbors managed to use (the last) 4 parking spaces with only 2 cars
Exactly the thing I love to see when I get home at 3 in the morning
Bob
Bob
:S
Like 6 months ago, the owners of this building announced that every party will have their parking spaces assigned to them. So that the whole parking space dilemma could be ended. Everyone hated the idea, because they might end up with a "suboptimal parking space" and then they'd be stuck with it
And, suddenly everyone started parking like they've never done anything else in their life
Long story short, people suck :P
02:32
lol
blah
untarring stuff on the pi sucks
02:46
lol
Try compiling some stuff :P
doing it now ;p
boost is kinda annoying
its using a wierd set of non standard build commands
04:01
You're compiling boost on the Pi? O__O
I just noticed one of our customers used one of my photos without my consent on their facebook page
Should I sue them for millions?
...or billions?
05:05
@OliverSalzburg: yes
well have been for QUITE a while
Ouch
05:20
talk about spirit. 219-1 and still wanna go
05:31
Seemingly HumbleBundle(thq one) added two more games after i bought it !
oh?
extra COH ones?
no, Titan Quest, A red faction DLC and and Warhammer GOTY
05:52
ahh right
blah
another product review up on G+
I really need to get around to that blag thing
06:46
@OliverSalzburg Been there done that.
Though it is reasonable if you use distcc...
@TomWijsman: its still ongoing ;p

2 hours later…
08:20
I couldn't get boost working, so I just went with the packaged library
oops ;p
lol
its gonna end up messy
planning on getting a bigger SD card anyway...
08:49
yay, WP site is up
Bob
Bob
09:12
heh, Windows 8 considers WEP be under the category of No Authentication (Open)
09:37
Cool a contest in Arqade answerswarm.com
compiling libtorrent is going badly too
why am I doing this again? ;p
09:47
yeah, premade theme. At some point I will learn zee dark arts of zee css
No caching plugins ?
install something like w3 or supercache
otherwise anyone can take it down :D
lol
I JUST got it set up
installed supercache
can't hurt to torture the VPS less ;p
Hi. I just run "pecl upgrade memcache" command from putty on remote linux-based server for resolving a memcache issue and now getting "The connection was reset" message while browsing that server. How can I rollback that command ????
gah Metro 2033's stealth sections are too hard :P
@HackToHell: too used to running and gunning? ;p
09:59
@JourneymanGeek nginx or lighty ?
@JourneymanGeek yeah :P
@SujitSingh: "connection was reset" is unrelated - means something is off with your ssh sessions
@HackToHell: apache
Its what I'm familiar with
First FPS game i am playing that involves stealth ;p
one thing I love about the borderlands series
death is VERY temporary
@JourneymanGeek Doesn't it use too much memory ?
you take a money hit, and thats it
still under my 256 mb
barely
10:01
lol, tf2's respawn times can get as long as 4 mins
mysql is the big memory hog, and there's no real replacement for that
you can kill InnoDB
mysql uses ~43mb and lighty uses 16mb
@JourneymanGeek : no.. it is because of that command only.. i tried on other machine also... can you tell me how to undo "pecl upgrade memcache" command?
The total mem usage is around 66 mb
ya, apache does seem to be the biggie here
oh well, if i decide to rebuild the server, we'll see
10:08
I'm not sure, more likely SO tho
@JourneymanGeek as for a CDN, you can use CloudFare !
it's awesome !
@JourneymanGeek : how can i know what is off in ssh? Sorry, but I am PHP developer.. so not much familier with linux as I work on Windows.
10:26
Seriously though HOIC is annoyingly effective, it can easily take down my blog :(
@HackToHell: who's going to try? ;p
@SujitSingh: well, you arn't connecting, which is bad
@JourneymanGeek How can I connect?
well, you're going to need to ask someone with physical access to the system to check
@JourneymanGeek : but is this because of that "pecl upgrade memcached" command? because before running that it was working fine.
it shouldn't be
it might be something completely unrelated
10:34
@JourneymanGeek : OK. Thanks.
@HackToHell: the main reason I'm doing this is it feels really wierd to do long product reviewy rants on things I like on G+ ;p
ok, I'm VERY definately going to need to get an optical drive on my desktop
dad's just discovered he can rip movies to his phone ;p
@JourneymanGeek :P
@JourneymanGeek Doesn't that kill NAND mem fast ?
lol
write once, and just playback?
why would it?
also, its in an SD card
10:51
A lot of r/w are performed while torrenting, will that not affect lifespan ?
SD cards are cheap but if the internal memory dies ...
er
no, not torrenting
ripping with handbrake to hard drive
then to SD card
legit ;p
besides using a phone to torrent is supid
you'll either have wifi (slow) or data (slow and expensive) connections
11:07
Just seen this... An offline spam bot caught in action - youtube.com/watch?v=WKKXo5woHCE
howdy folks
@WilliamHilsum: thats singapore
they actually have little latches so you can choose whether or not to get junkmail that way. Its quite literally adblock ;p
@Sathya howdy
@JourneymanGeek haha
Bob
Bob
11:34
@HackToHell I think the majority of FPS campaigns involve stealth in some way
heck, CoD:MW had some
@JourneymanGeek Jump to SQLite if it's a small site? :P
@Bob: its wordpress ;p
can I run that on SQLite?
Bob
Bob
looks like if you wanna hack at it :P
not recommended, though (obv)
are you on BuyVM?
$1/month
yeah, I am
looks good, I'll give it a poke once I get some cash into paypal
Bob
Bob

A: Is SQLite strong enough to use as wordpress database?

Joel CoehoornSQLite is an in-process or desktop class database. MySQL is a server class database. I'm a little notorious here for promoting server-class engines over desktop or in-process -class engines for web sites, because no matter how well you do at your in-process database engine you are going to have...

I think the external SQL server makes more sense
Bob
Bob
11:41
looks like the general opinion is SQLite would be fine if you can keep it mostly read-only
this isn't going to get very heavy use
Bob
Bob
@JourneymanGeek that's what they all say :P
Bob
Bob
suddenly, someone posts a link to <slashdot effect site> and your VPS is down ;)
XD
I'm not that good a writer ;p
Bob
Bob
11:43
if you still want to try SQLite for whatever reason: alien.slackbook.org/blog/pdopowered
but, yea, not really good if you're planning to upgrade in future (or you can get at that offloaded DB server)
naw
the offloaded DB server sounds like a much better idea
I swear the spammers are actually evolving tactics
12:10
@Bob that sniper mission was super annoying yet easy ;p
Metro 2033 is hard :P
Have to love BuyVM for giving 5gb offloaded backup space for free !
@Bob Caching plugins help, not that much queries are made to the SQL server
I lost my patience playing the stealth mission of Crysis tho
Bob
Bob
@HackToHell how do you even use that space?
RamNode takes automatic weekly backups (not guaranteed, though) :P
@HackToHell nothing to do with the database server
the VPS/webserver itself would likely go down with the sheer volume of requests :P
@JourneymanGeek O.O
@JourneymanGeek ...Grup?
XD
Bob
Bob
...single board configuration?
jumpers‽‽‽
what is this I don't even
12:26
@Bob weekly wordpress backups !
Bob
Bob
@HackToHell ? seriously, how do you use that space?
I would like to back up my VPS :P
@Bob With offloaded SQL, the site will be able to survive a tad bit longer
Bob
Bob
Oh, you have to order it separately
@HackToHell not much
@Bob wordpress and /var/conf directory gets backed up
Bob
Bob
we're talking hundreds/thousands of requests per second if it gets any real exposure
12:28
@Bob try using HOIC with and without a caching plugin, you will see what I mean :P
@Bob it can manage hundreds !
Bob
Bob
look, it's enough to take down some pretty major websites
a single 256 MB VPS is going to die
horribly
I am not saying it will not happen, it will be delayed :P
brb
Bob
Bob
you're talking a minor difference. single digit factors, most likely. I'm talking about volumes of traffic orders of magnitude past what the server can handle...
okay, okay I get it !
To survive the front page of reddit you will prolly want several dedicated servers with load balancers !
Bob
Bob
couldn't hurt :P
Bob
Bob
@HackToHell Keep in mind that 'small file' and 'local machine' are quite important - and make this benchmark inapplicable to most real-world scenarios
larger amounts of data and increased latency means each connection needs to be open for longer..
ik, was looking for a benchmark with php and wordpress
Can't seem to find a proper one
Grr !! Stop doing that
Darn. I wander off a bit and....
Bob
Bob
lol
Bob
Bob
13:07
@JourneymanGeek You're not allowed to do that!
<rant>went to bed an hour earlier, got up an hour earlier, raced out the door, left 90 minutes early in the pouring down rain, idled through six accidents on the commute to work, and the FUCKING MEETING WAS CANCELLED!!!!!!!!!
I sit on a new machine today, I get the feeling it's not very safe...
worse, they gave 23 minutes advance notice that the meeting was cancelled
so even if I checked my email before leaving I wouldn't have seen the cancellation
what? unity?!
13:10
Lol
Lots of updates
Bob
Bob
@allquixotic ...6 accidents? :S
@Bob yep, in 23 miles of road
Bob
Bob
wtf.
when it rains outside, people in Maryland drive like meteors are falling from the sky... or nuclear missions, idk
Bob
Bob
does anyone know how to drive where you live?
13:11
No
Bob
Bob
do you have, I dunno, licence tests or something?
there was a van that drove off the road into a ditch
Bob
Bob
...
Amurica xD
13:11
loads and loads of broken down cars
Bob
Bob
eh
@allquixotic Last week I was on the bus' doorsteps, PAYING THE DRIVER, when my cellphone vibrates with a new email, "don't come to the office that's 75min from your home, come to the other one, 15min from your home". (And I had enabled 3G on that cellphone 1 day earlier!)
Bob
Bob
I an't say much about our transport
honestly, I think 98% of the rain related accidents in the US are due to very poorly maintained tires
Bob
Bob
a major section of the train line was down for 8 hours this morning
cause 300m of overhead wiring was 'loose'
13:12
tires with no treads, tires that are underinflated
@jokerdino Unity works, and I'm too lazy to learn how to install a new UI (and fix everything if it messes up).
@Bob 10k volt lines were loose ?
people waste billions of gallons of gasoline and diesel and cause accidents due to hydroplaning all because people don't maintain their tires
Bob
Bob
@HackToHell :P
not sure about the voltage, though
@RudáAlmeida everyone hates unity.
2
13:13
@Bob locomotive catenary cables are typically very high voltage, at least 10,000V
Bob
Bob
oh, not just loose
apparently it literally fell on a train...
and it's 1.5kV
I don't know why you guys don't like Unity. In Ubuntu 12.10 I actually like it
The higher the voltage, less the power wasted
I was one of the people who hated Unity in the early days, but as of 12.10 I can use it
I'm not going to pile on that star because I disagree :P
Bob
Bob
I'll stick with KDE, thanks :P
13:14
@allquixotic i forgot the /s tag :P
Bob
Bob
Still haven't figured out how to make it prefer 5GHz, though
i am using unity ;)
Bob
Bob
there's a couple of guides for the GNOME network manager
but not KDE D:
@jokerdino I find that Unity went from "a joke" (when it was first introduced) to "meh" in 12.04 to "cool" in 12.10
hopefully it continues to evolve but I really don't mind the way it's implemented in 12.10 with a few minor customizations
@allquixotic i am surprised you have flipped your opinion so soon. i didn't expect :P
btw, did you not hear the latest drama?
13:16
the main things that drove me insane about earlier Unity were (1) crashes (2) performance (3) the way the bar would constantly hide and show itself
Unity in qt and mir
Well, I very, very rarely used Linux before 2012. I use it now on a daily basis, and Unity works (well, except when it doesn't). Actually it's software that has no Unity support and is supposed to show up on gnome's taskbar that pisses me off a bit, but it happened twice only, I think.
crashes are resolved for my hardware (Ivy Bridge IGP), performance is usable, and the bar isn't flaky about hiding/showing
Bob
Bob
user image
5
Oh, yes I read about Mir and Qt and Unity. Meh. I don't see that as drama. Mir is trying to implement a software stack that straddles the graphics driver divide
Bob
Bob
13:17
@allquixotic Performance problems are easy enough to fix..
I just didn't like the UI
it's like the Plasma search & launch
it's perfectly reasonable to want to support both Android graphics drivers (of which there are many good ones) and desktop graphics drivers (of which there are several good ones)
Doesn't anyone like XFCE ?
@HackToHell it hasnt changed in a long time.
It has the old school gnome look and that's awesome :P
e is the future.
13:19
I've been using Ubuntu for 5 months and found out about the HUD.... well, right now.
Bob
Bob
wut.
wtf.
lol, HUD sucks,it does not index all the applications installed :P
hud is a replacement for menu
Bob
Bob
the compsci course I'm doing right now has these instructions for installing a C compiler on Windows: Install Ubuntu
-________________________________________________-
and those are apparently the simple instructions
Bob
Bob
13:21
because, of course there's no way setting up dual boot could go wrong
yep. installing c in windows is not worth the pain
Doesn't MinGW work well ...
Bob
Bob
@HackToHell Yea, MinGW is pretty easy to install and use
@jokerdino dual boot is worse
far far worse
@Bob Installing on a VM does count as installing, right?
@Bob why ??
13:22
dual boot is not that bad. ubiquity is the way forward
Bob
Bob
@RudáAlmeida step by step: download the 500MB setup, run it, reboot into Ubuntu, open Firefox (instead of IE), go back to the instruction page
I don't see any way that could go wrong </s>
@jokerdino tell that to the guy complaining he had to spent hours sorting out 'hard disk errors'
apparently while trying to install Ubuntu on a Mac of some kind
@Bob yeah sure. i'll let him know
Bob
Bob
Thanks! :P
@Bob Who the F#@$ uses IE?
Bob
Bob
13:24
@RudáAlmeida well, the lecturer's an OS X user. I'm not sure he's used Windows since 98 -_-
@RudáAlmeida IE 10 is ok :P
Bob
Bob
hrmmm
the alternative/'advanced' options:
@HackToHell I don't care if it's OK, market share for it is 20% and falling...
And your source is ?
gs.statcounter.com (29% worldwide, but still, fallling)
Bob
Bob
13:26
1. LiveCD/DVD (because this is *so much more advanced* than dual booting!)
2. VMware Player (ditto)
3. Pelles C (ne'er heard of it)
4. a blog guide for installing some MinGW variant (because, apparently, the official MinGW Windows binaries have a *no* chance of working)
5. why the f*** did they link to en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_MS-DOS_commands
I'm getting very tired of saying THE WINDOWS COMMAND LINE IS NOT DOS
Hey, someone time out Bob!
Bob
Bob
:P
I've pretty much given up on
really?
-1
Q: Where is the MS DOS command line in windows 8?

user2147550i'm having trouble trying to find the MS-DOS command line to type "dir" and then "bcc32 firsprog.c" so I can compile a program that I made called "firstprog.c" using BCC32 C compiler. I'm using windows 8 and can't find a solution anywhere. Thanks for your help

It hasn't existed since ME
If it's just an introdutory C course why they don't recommend the Borland Turbo C compiler? It's freeware and works on Windows. (Or used to circa 2004) cc.embarcadero.com/item/25636
Bob
Bob
Well, they're using Linux/OS X on the other side, so I guess they'd prefer to keep using GCC
but there's plenty of good GCC builds for Windows
Bob
Bob
13:33
oh boy
they're saying the OS X terminal is the same as Linux
someone's going to be disappointed when they run into a tool missing GNU extensions...
Oh, the boredom of sitting alone in an office room with nothing to do, all day long, and a connection slower than my 2G mobile. At least I got air conditioning...
Bob
Bob
@RudáAlmeida I hear Minesweeper is fun.
@Bob totally
@Bob Had my share of it from the Win95 days. On the other hand, I have and android phone with lots of games, including Another World, EDGE, Osmos, World of Goo, Inertia, Zen Bound 2, Dead Trigger and Shadowgun.
Bob
Bob
Osmos! :D
HIB? :P
13:37
/me HIB fan/addicted! \o/
Bob
Bob
I think EDGE, Osmos and WoG were in a HIB at some point
can't remember the rest
which reminds me, I need to buy the latest one
wait
waitwaitwait
there's Solar 2 for Android?
I'd happilly play Shadowgun if the devs didnt suddenly raise the difficulty bar A GAZIILLION TIMES mid-play. Seriusly, it's "a bit too easy" for like 10 stages then BOOOOM, some screen you just can't pass, unless you're korean. I've tried 10h+.
Bob
Bob
:D
@Bob Now there is, on the HIB Android 5. Closes in 1 week. humblebundle.com
Bob
Bob
@RudáAlmeida yea, that's where I saw it
wasted so much time on that game
:D
13:40
Never played it.
anyone try Dungeon Defenders? :D
I'm absolutely addicted to Dungeon Defenders
Bob
Bob
@RudáAlmeida try it :P
My PC is a laptop from 2008, so it basically sucks. I buy lots of games and never play it.
Bob
Bob
13:40
I recommend with a keyboard
Last week I bought an xbox360, so it might change.
Bob
Bob
a phone touchscreen might be too small
@RudáAlmeida it's pretty lightweight
the Windows version is C#/XNA
@Bob Solar 2 is fun with a mouse :P
Bob
Bob
@allquixotic oh yea :P
I can't remember if I used a keyboard or mouse now
never really got in to touch gaming though
My laptop has Directx9 onboard graphics =/
13:41
I don't have the patience to make one of those huge multi-star solar systems with 16 planets with life... I just grow and grow until I'm a black hole and end the game
I really love the unusual games, like Windosill, And Yet It Moves, Limbo, Osmos
Osmos soundtrack is really, really great
Bob
Bob
@allquixotic funnily enough, i went through that stage on my way to a BH
@RudáAlmeida what about Machinarium and that other one from Amanita
Bob
Bob
I like Osmos as a game
Botanicula
Bob
Bob
13:45
but I'm kinda unhappy cause it was the first to expose my failing AMOLED screen :\
@allquixotic I loved Samorost since someone showed me it as an email attachment from a mailing list in 2003. Forgot the name, been looking for it for years, then suddenly it's on the HIB.
Bob
Bob
@RudáAlmeida suddenly, virus!
I haven't played Machiunarium or Botanicula yet, but I finished Samorost 2 twice
@Bob I didn't... I was like... asteroid, run away from scary planets, small planet, life planet, run away from big scary solar systems, small star, run away from aliens, medium star, eat planets, large star, eat planets, neutron star, eat planets, black hole, eat everything
@Bob Virus? Where?
Bob
Bob
13:46
@RudáAlmeida email attachments c. 2003
@Bob Well, it was a SWF file.
what actually happens when you collide your large star with a smaller star in Solar 2? do you die or just lose a ton of mass or do you grow?
i avoided confronting other stars when i was a star (or even a planet) :P
Bob
Bob
@RudáAlmeida Don't get me started on Flash.
@allquixotic I think it was loss of mass
I think you lose mass if you collide with anything at any stage, except asteroids with asteroids
at every other stage, you have to absorb things properly
unless you're a black hole. then nomnomnomnomnomnom unless it's a larger black hole
Bob
Bob
No, i run Hackintosh, and my vmware supports it but i had to patch it in order to use OSX — Harlandraka 15 mins ago
so... are we still closing all these questions?
@allquixotic yea, asteroids and black holes are the only exceptions
