same
and dding that drive, again
Bob
Bob
@user88311 sometimes, it's better to just order a specific one online
True
@Hennes LOL, I have to laugh at this one, before, gparted showed all those partitions as empty with errors
started gparted to unallocate them all just now and start dd again
they all show as fine
with the proper flags
time to dd to the barracuda then
hey bob any ideas why we would have gotten those errors the other day and now they show as fine
Bob
Bob
@user88311 uhh.. in-memory corruption? dodgy cabling? lightning strike?
16:15
My bet is first one, as I did just refresh gparted when I first checked the partitions, not restart it
Bob
Bob
o.O they still sell Vista here
now I have to dd each partition 1 at a time as I don't want to try to dd a 259gig to 160
and what
seriously
Bob
Bob
@user88311 My personal guess would be the second - if your SATA cables aren't great, or you bump (or don't completely push in) the USB cable, it could disconnect briefly
@user88311 Yea. $45 for Ultimate 32-bit, $49 for 64-bit (since when were those two different prices... weird store)
heh. $1 for a (Nero|CyberLink|Roxio) OEM package..
where are you at
Bob
Bob
Wait.. USB mouse pad?!
16:19
ok what store*
Bob
Bob
@user88311 Sydney. But I'm looking at MSY's clearance lists for lack of anything else to do
here's something, since I'm still new to dd, how would I que up commands as to not do each partition at the end of the other
Bob
Bob
what do you mean?
not do each partition at the end of the other?
you want to copy a specific partition? change the partition order?
copying partitions backed to a 250 onto a 160, can't just dev/sdb of=/dev/sda
Bob
Bob
well, you could copy them one at a time and resize them (assuming enough free space)
but didn't you want to keep 'empty' sectors as well, for recovery purposes?
16:23
....
if I try to dd a larger drive onto a smaller one, wont it try to copy unallocated space as well
since it copies everything
Bob
Bob
yes
do you mean to say you have unallocated (i.e. not part of a partition) space greater than or equal to 90 GB?
Bob
Bob
o.O
well, you can copy individual partitions
first thing to do is create a new partition identical to the one you want to copy, on the destination drive
by identical, I mean in size
I guess a little bigger would also work, but exact match is best
then identify your source and destination partitions
where the drive is /dev/sdX
the partition will be /dev/sdX#, # being the partition number
bob
we went over this 2 days ago
Bob
Bob
huh. then why/what are you asking again now?
16:26
I just wanted to know if I could que commands, hennes showed me a way the other day but I've been busy and don't have time to check the chat log
Bob
Bob
queue? you mean execute commands one after another?
unshowers
Bob
Bob
command1; command2; command3
separate with semicolons
command 1 ; command 2 || command 3 && command 4
thank you
Bob
Bob
16:28
or use && if you only want to run the next command when the previous one succeeds
; sequence
Bob
Bob
|| means run if the previous one fails
success being an exit code of 0, failure being a non-zero exit code
now< I've got to make lunch and re assemble a ps3 I reflowed a hour ago
* Waits for hair to dry before going outside *
@user88311 Eh, two remarks.
1) Why did you not debug on the 250 drives. Larger is usually faster.
and you could recopy if needed
2) A drives partition table probably gets cached.
So if you change it, either reboot or disconnect and reconnect the drive
Then the changes will get noticed
/me removes the starred links. While you can download them from the MS site, I am not sure how they react if they find their software on someone elses webpages.
Bob
Bob
@Hennes see if the licence allows redistribution :P
prolly not
16:33
Already deleted on my webpages.
Least effort
And MS licensing is something which causes headaches
Bob
Bob
@Hennes it was fine and surprisingly easy to understand until Win8 :\
relatively speaking. I've seen far worse
From Sun/Oracle ?
Bob
Bob
not sure where exactly
I think i just gave up trying to understand it and blocked ti from my mind
With love,
joker.
With love, my little illuminati pony
16:37
haha
Bob
Bob
@jokerdino hi there!
@Hennes how cold? :P
@Bob sup Bob!
Bob
Bob
haven't seen you in a while
Yep.
Was conserving b/w.
I get about 2GB every month.
16:37
Yo joker
Hey @HaydnWVN.
i was almost about to ask how is your wife doing but I realized that is quite rude. How is the dog?
2GB a month?! I get more than that on my cheap mobile tariff
My dog and my girlfriend are great
as for the wife...
Not got one of those yet :P
@HaydnWVN Heh, dont get me started. I need to get my dad to switch broadband plans.
But he is unwilling.
@HaydnWVN Awesome!
@HaydnWVN Ah, so it is g/f and not wife. Wrong terminology there. :/
Just hit the limit every month by a few MB, he'll be tired of chasing you about it
@HaydnWVN Surely soon enough?
@HaydnWVN Each additional MB is .80 rupees each.
Not much but enough to eat into my pocket money.
I use up about 200 MB above the limit.
16:41
So exceed the limit by 1mb every month lol ;)
Meh. I just dropped my old legancy unlimited mobile internet access for a cheaper mobile account with no access at all. (and a fraction of the price)
@HaydnWVN I have been trying lol
the one issue is the entire family has to share the 2 GB b/w
which seems almost impossible
Ouch!
I've got 4GB on my mobile tariff and my home broadband is unlimited (50GB in the T&C's)
I would be happy with 5 gb.
Probably use 20% of the mobile and 10% of the broadband lol
If i could send you some bandwidth i would :P
16:43
send me some :P
But for now shall i just email you this 1gb file? ;)
i've got bigger if you want... :P
lol i have another 40 MB left for this month.
Ideal heaven would have unlimited bandwidth with no data cap
You'll only get that with a high end business tariff
Yeah, time to make a dealing with Him.
over here in the UK there's lots of unmetered home broadband tariff's, but reading into the T&C's there's always a limit
16:47
Wish there were lots of roadside Wifis that are not secured.
Explain to him that you're fed up of the inflated prices they charge when you go over, try to get him to pay the same value per month similar to what he is now (maybe a bit more) with you putting some towards it a month... Then figure out what you'd be able to get with the providers you like for that price
Yeah.
Given that it will take 3 months for the provider to process the change. Bah
Or cough up a little as bribe.
Bob
Bob
@HaydnWVN how is 50 GB unlimited?
Unlimited here means 10 GB.
the network gets throttled after crossing it, I was told.
Bob
Bob
@HaydnWVN ah. I'm actually on an unlimited plan at the moment :P
upload is crappy though
expectations of low latency are completely shot when someone starts uploading anything
16:52
Isn't it 3 something for you there @Bob?
Bob
Bob
I spend more time worrying about how to throttle uploads than data caps
@jokerdino 4, actually. and I should sleep..
@Bob You ought to.
At least before I go to bed.
Bob
Bob
lol
well, I'm off then
i have been sleeping from 10 pm to 10 am for the past month.
@Bob Nights!
Bob
Bob
g'night
17:03
@Hennes Well that failed, dd finshed, looked at the barracuda drive in gparted, only listed the 1 partition
@Hennes the if=/dev/sdb of=dev/sda wont work because dd will try to copy a entire 250 gig drive to the 160 I obviously failed somewhere's, what command should I have used other than sdb1, sdb2, sd3 one after another
dd from b to a should work. It should copy the first 160GB before failing. That should restore all the contents of the 160gb drive before you get the error
And you can 'only' copy 160GB by using the count command
Example: dd if=/dev/sdb bs=1G count=160 reads 160GB, then stops.
(minor detail, the 160GB drive probably is not precisely 160GB. Do adjust the numbers)
ARGH. I got in to work two hours late. but I sent out my required Monday AM deliverable only 10 minutes late :D
my heart was pounding as I tore through that document omg
Hometime, cya o/
cya Haydn
oh well aware of that
17:15
@user88311 Just use clonezilla or g4l in gparted instead of dd?
or is it a learning exercise?
data recovery
@HaydnWVN Aye, for backups that would be best.
why struggle with dd commands when there's so many programs out there that take the headache out of it? :)
However the Question was 'including empty sectors'
I know ghost has an option for that. As has dd, and dd is free
long story, if I wasn't re assembling a ps3, using dd, making lunch and getting ready for work I'd explain it
17:17
g4l isn't ghost (strictly speaking)
I also assumed (dangerous thing: assumptions) that re recovery would be attempted on the copy. Both because it was the copy and because it was a larger (and probably faster) drive
ahhh, fair enough, all you had to mention was ps3 lol
i know a guy who used to change xbox/ps3 and sky hdd's for larger ones all the time
It is, I'm making a second copy as well
I do reflows, fix the ylod (solder breaks)
ahhh, only console experience i've had was swapping dvd drives in xbox360's
never really used one (or want to) just a friend needed help
anyway, i'm off! o/ :)
17:43
Well I got to get to work
@allquixotic Two hours? Daaaaaang. What happened?
@Tanner i have no idea... i stayed up way too late, and i woke up and it was 10 am
i have no idea how i was able to sleep in that long but i just kind of did... my body was like, nope, you can bring this building down around me but i'm gonna get some sleep
@allquixotic Slept through alarm?
@Tanner slept through everything... other people yelling at me, alarm, etc etc
@allquixotic That sucks... you get in trouble?
17:46
awesome user name change btw... calling you Tanner is what I'd do anyway so it's good to be able to ping you by that ;D
haha yeah I didn't know I could change my username on a whim, and didn't realize that duplicates don't matter.
@Tanner no, not really... I had to hurry up and submit a deliverable due by noon, I usually spend a few hours on it but I choked it out only 10 minutes late and they didn't seem to care... one of my supervisors (not my actual BIG BOSS) talked to me but he was more concerned than scolding
That's good.
I showed up 1 hour and 15 minutes late to work once. Since then I've had a reoccuring nightmare every month about being late...
i'm eavesdropping on a conversation in the big boss's office and it sounds like it's about test scripts or something, not me, so I'm happy
Also I use three alarms now. One with battery backup that will go off unplugged, one that's entirely analog, and an alarm on my cell phone.
17:49
haha. I'm thinking of getting a bed that will turn sideways and plop me down on the floor next to my computer if I don't wake up in time
lmao
also I'm thinking it should have, like, a chainsaw that threatens to cut into my skin if I don't wake up
@allquixotic, @Tanner this is what I use :P
rev it up, start a loud gasoline engine with no muffler
17:50
really works! I'm deaf.
@allquixotic hahahahaha
113db is significant.
@Tanner not if you are 90dB deaf
@studiohack Whoa, are you?
@Tanner yup! born 80db deaf. now have lost 90% of my hearing
or I could just get a partner of some sort, an actual other person, and let them think up fiendishly evil ways of waking me up, like trying to break my leg
17:51
@allquixotic I read on Lifehacker a gadget that posts embarrassing tweets about you on Twitter if you don't get up.
@studiohack awesome
I have SERIOUS issues with waking up, but it's mostly a function of the amount of sleep I get
@allquixotic me too. I sleep too much or too little. I even ignore my alarm mentioned above (the sonicboom)
10 or more hours: easy; marginally less than 8 hours: difficult; 5 hours: very difficult; 2 hours: nearly impossible; 30 minutes to 1 hour: a freight train could run over me and I'd sleep through it, snoring and all
@allquixotic hahahaha
I can survive 6 hours, I prefer 9, it's luxury and bliss to sleep over 9
I LOVE sleeping 10 - 12 hours, I do that all the time when I don't have work the next day
it feels sooooo good to be able to wake up naturally
also, on days like this when I get almost no sleep the night before, I usually come home after work and crash hard at like 7pm
and have a much easier time of waking up the next day, but I'm like "damnit damnit damnit, there goes my social life"
17:55
@studiohack For me it's exactly 8 hours or I'm in a "YOU ALL CAN BURN IN HELL" kind of mood...
Today I slept 9. Guess how I'm feeling? :P
@Tanner I'm about as functional (and easy to get up) on exactly 8 hours as the typical person is on 4
my body needs 10 - 12 every single day to be 100% physically healthy and happy
anything less and the sky starts to fall
@studiohack I have 30-40db loss in my right ear. Probably 15ish on the left?
@Tanner lol haha. really? how come? (the hearing loss)
It's either music or cogan's syndrome. I'll know when I'm 30...
@allquixotic if you don't have a social life, that's not a problem. :P (mine is at work)
17:57
Dad has an autoimmune disease with similar symptomps.
speaking of hearing loss, I consider myself extremely lucky; my hearing is within normal range for someone my age (27), even though I've had tubes (plastic, or metal) in my ear drums like 6 times, and had all kinds of ear infections and perforated ear drums and stuff early in childhood
@allquixotic that's a painful childhood
I had my adenoids surgically removed and the area where they grow cauterized twice; it took two attempts to get them to stop growing back :P once I had them out the second time in my teen years (they gave me the gas mask general anaesthetic for the surgery), my rate of ear infections dropped from 1 every 3 - 6 months to 1 every 18 - 24 months
the last time I had an ear infection now was when I was 24 or 25 and I'm 27
the thing is, if you grow large adenoids, they block your natural mucus passageways and prevent your ears from draining fluid, so the fluid backs up and you get an ear infection; then if you don't get it treated with an antibiotic, since it can't drain anywhere it perforates the ear drum
my ear nose and throat doctor explained it to me when i was young but i remember the concept. I have lingering minor sinus problems nowadays but nowhere NEAR what I used to have.
ENT problems suck.
I had that surgery where they yank cartilage out of your nose and try to straighten it out... Need it done again but no.
@Tanner ack.
I don't really mind ENT surgeries so much if they give you general anaesthesia, but I don't like to have the problems in the first place hehe
18:04
I don't like the healing.
They packed my sinuses with gauze clear up to my eyeballs. Eff that. Never again.
one time my ENT was using an instrument to look up my nose and he touched it against something in there (I don't even know) and I had a SHARP pain like being stabbed with an ice pick
it felt like he was going to touch my brain but it wasn't THAT long of an instrument
gauze up to your eyeballs? ack, yuck. the healing process for the adenoid removal is nowhere near that bad
they cauterize it using heat while you're unconscious so that they don't grow back; the same process also stops bleeding and basically seals off that area from future tissue growth
Yeah I've had my nose cauterized before too, due to excessive bleeds.
I remember feeling a vague kind of pain in the back of my throat / back of my sinuses but it wasn't anything worse than, say, a sinus headache
the recovery for that surgery really wasn't THAT bad
plus I got ice cream (as much as I wanted) :3
haha
lol hijack this scan. forgot that I put that in my hosts file...
meeting with the customer at the customer site from 1:30 - 3:00 pm today and every day this week. I'll be away from my desk. I'll see you guys later when I return. :3
18:10
@allquixotic Cya later

Alex Miller on January 28, 2013

Welcome to Stack Exchange Podcast #41, featuring Joel Spolsky, Jay Hanlon, David Fullerton, Kyle Brandt, Nick Craver, and Geoff Dalgas, with Producer Alex calling in from Denver!  We have a bunch of systems administrators and the like here, because we are in the process of moving datacenters to our new home in New York City.

So what’s involved in the move? We hired movers to do all the de-racking and truck driving, so the work done by SE employees involved laying everything out and then wiring it back up. …

19:18
@slhck I feel a need to mention that I do like Epiphone. IMO they make the best new guitars in the $600 range. I just hate buying new guitars. =D
So the "Hell no" to the Epiphone was not anything against Epiphone.
@Tanner Yeah, I like them too, if you get proper replacement pickups, because the original ones are not too good.
I really like how well set up they are to begin with. Most people that buy a guitar aren't going to get it properly set up, and if they do that's like another $100...
(at least buy a guitar in that range)
Yup!
19:37
@Tanner Should I play on you?
@Boris_yo Why do I feel slightly molested by that comment?
@Tanner At least not abused...
@Tanner Is that Gibson Les Paul or Gibson Les Mel?
Paul
Somewhere between 1970 and 73
Pickups aren't original :( but they were made with the original pickup winder so whatevs
Pots were replaced in 76
@Tanner You like Bob Marley?
@Boris_yo I appreciate some Marley. Not a huge fan though.
Gotta love No Woman No Cry
19:48
@Tanner I heard he played in 432hz
Today all music is set to 440hz to weaken humanity and keep us in fear and low creativity.
Here is part with Bob Marley:
20:49
@Boris_yo Might have to try 432hz, though I don't really think it makes a difference
@Tanner It does with headphones.
How so?
@Boris_yo I don't know what conspiracy theory you're going on about with 440 Hz, but you can change it to whatever frequency you want using commonly available software on any platform.
I regularly listen to music pitch shifted, so when it's pitch shifted, it's definitely not based on A440
@allquixotic No, you need to have music naturally listened to or recorded from original source that plays it in 432Hz.
I... what?
@allquixotic Meme?
@Boris_yo Okay. I'll bite. Why doesn't shifting the pitch work?
@Tanner that is from a printed out slide deck / packet from my meeting today
21:05
@allquixotic haha nice
imagine a bunch of 50+ year olds in a room acting extremely serious and formal, and this one young guy presenting, and he puts an image macro up
considering our organization is quite extremely sensitive to the older generation (we serve them!), I don't think that image macro was very well-received. nobody even knew what an image macro was.
Welp. Somebody lost their job yesterday.
That one young guy lol
@Tanner oh. no way. he holds that place together, literally
he's the only one on the customer testing team that REALLY knows his technical stuff... HTML, CSS, JS, template libraries, etc
the rest are all "adult learners of technomagic" and don't have the slightest clue about it
21:10
haha
What was the reaction to it?
best summed up by: they say "screen"; he says "page" like any sane web dev would.
@Tanner I laughed. Rest of the room: DEAD SILENCE.
Nice.
Clearly they weren't sure what they were looking at =D
@Tanner yeah -- "why is this picture of an elderly woman looking at a computer overlaid with text? Is this some kind of joke?"
and prior to that image macro was extremely fast-paced, buzzword and acronym-laced jibber-jabber from the team lead people, with nary a single word worth smiling about
more horror than anything - "dear god, are we really going to have to do all this work?!?!?!"
If I have a CPU that takes DDR3-800/1066/1333 memory, can I install DDR3-1600 memory (CL11) and run it at 1333 CL9? I can't find any DDR3 1333 CL9 RAM confirmed to work on the MB I want...
@DanielBeck Usually.
or wait
is that mobo only?
21:18
@Tanner How do I find out? I'd rather not buy RAM for €800 and find out it's slow :-/
@Tanner What do you mean?
@allquixotic would probably know better than I
Looking at dual Xeons E5-2640 and Asus Z9PE-D16. Compatible RAM: dlcdnet.asus.com/pub/ASUS/mb/Socket2011/Z9PE-D16/Manual/…
I have RAM running in the configuration you described
@DanielBeck Basically if it's not on the supported list you're going to be testing your luck either way. I don't think there's any real way to make sure it's going to work other than dropping it in and finding out.
The closer all the specs are the better of course.
@Tanner Wait, I want to get supported RAM, but run the DDR-1600 at 1333 because the CPU only does 800/1066/1333. Or do you mean this is already out of spec?
Basically the only supported RAM I find is KVR16R11D4/8HC.
Oh, if it's on the supported list you should be fine. It'll just run at the 1333.
@DanielBeck Maybe pop in to the Comms Room and ask? I can't say I've tested it with ECC and whatnot. I've abused RAM pretty well on desktops, but they might be more forgiving.
21:31
@Tanner it works in server/ECC/buffered configurations as well as it does in unbuffered/non-ECC
So he ought to be fine, ya? The difference between CL11 and CL9 should be negligible, and I can't say I personally notice a difference between 1333 and 1600 even.
@DanielBeck well it will be slow*er* than getting a CPU/mobo that does 1600, but it won't be slow as in unacceptably slow, probably. but anyway you should consider this: if you buy from a store that doesn't accept returns, it's your fault :P buy it "risk-free" and if it don't work, send it back and get something else... if your store won't let you, don't shop there!
@allquixotic Ahh, the practical approach :P
@Tanner s/practical/empirical
ordering hardware online is like ordering a pair of shoes online -- for all you know, it has some unstated problem or limitation or just doesn't seem right, so sending it back is a normal part of the process
Yeah, no chance to do that when ordering something as a business in Germany.
21:37
=\ Really? Your options are that limited?
Perhaps with some vendors targeting businesses specifically, but they don't usually sell parts, and as it's just me I don't get preferred customer status any time soon.
Well, and Amazon.
10€ more per module (~63 instead of ~53), but being able to return.... could be worth it.
Crap. Amazon Marketplace, and returning is again only allowed for consumers.
To clarify, I can of course return broken stuff, but "I can't get it to work", "It's not what I need", etc. doesn't work.
that sucks
in that case, DON'T base your purchasing decision on my advice =o
haha
idk how you're going to decide then
Ya know what? effit. If it's on your mobo's supported list and it doesn't work, the damn thing is broken IMO :P
Just send it back and say "It's broken" if it won't post with it in
I dunno. It's a tough call.
21:46
but, if it's NOT on the mobo's supported list, do NOT under any circumstances buy it under that restrictive "no returns" policy
maybe you can use the mobo's supported list as a defense so that you can make warranty claims like "this is supposed to work! look, here, it says so!" to get a free under warranty replacement
You could probably ask them if it works with this motherboard.
At least I did a similar thing with a store for coffee gear and they said they honestly didn't know but would take it back if it didn't work.

1 hour later…
23:11
@DanielBeck: pugetsystems.com/labs/articles/… ram frequency shouldn't matter that much, practically
@JourneymanGeek Was more about general compatibility as I haven't kept up to date with component development. I expected 1600/CL11 RAM to run at 1333/CL9 (CAS latency probably having the most impact), and the real world difference should be negligible. 11/1333 OTOH...
You'll notice that the (CAS latency)/(frequency) ratio is always about the same.
I want to run RAM with a frequency different from the specified one. I thought that warranted a question.
