Since I'd want to leave her a "clean" PC, probably a good idea to remove it if that's what it is... But how can I make sure?
Use the build in disk cleaning.
C: right click, properties, [disk cleanup]
Also useful: [My computer] right click [properties] [System restore]. I usually disable it which deletes all restore points, then I re-enable it to create a single point.
Disk cleanup is running, but it won't tell me what the weird folder is for
WIndows 7 had a special option if it there were old service pack files. I can't remember that from XP
Bob
Bob
@Ariane I have a bunch of those - I think they're Visual Studio related
for me, anyway
@Bob Can I delete it?
02:06
@ariane: worst thing that can happen is you can't uninstall something
Let's go with the deletion then. :p
I'd note I have no idea what you're doing ;p
P2v then clearing a system?
Nothing exploded, so it was probably fine. whistles
No boom today, boom tommorrow, ALWAYS boom tommorrow...
What? Someone has to have some perspective around here ;p
No more a V2P
Yes ivonnova, we know :)
@Hennes How do I create a single restoration point?
Re-enable the restore points
Just that?
02:09
Someone else remembers that? I'm shocked ;p
yeah
That will automatically create on point
All right.
You will listen to Ivonnova. Ivoonova is G-d
Is close to that, I would need to google it for the precise words.
Okay!
Computer cleaned; put the folder you uploaded unzipped directly in C:\
What else? Defrag or something, or can I not care and just launch the creation of the ghost?
XD
youtube.com/watch?v=RaSmassvv4w this was her at her most badass
02:11
I always put them in c:\sysprep becuase it keeps c:\ cleaner, but directly in C: will probably work to.
I said folder.
Meaning it's C:\SysprepSP3
Oh, the mars thing? Looking
Would you please tell me my next step beforehand?
the black omega thing ;p
one sec.
Right. Stepo by step.
1) RUn sysprep.exe, that will pop up a window
It has a few options where you can tick a box
02:14
Inside Windows Xp?
Aye
It should look like this
You can just tell me what to check and click instead of making a screenshot :p
Tick generalise
And set the option to shutdown
I am trying to remember the choices in the first bar. I never changed it, but I do not recall their options
It does not look at this at all.
like this*
Bob
Bob
@Ariane no idea
02:19
Yes, changes between versions :(
Lower option to "shutdown" (default), tick "use mini setup' and reseal
Do I check "Detect non-plug and play devices"?
no, I never needed that option.
And We do not need 'don't regenerate security identifiers' either.
Okay, done.
So, I... reboot?
ah wait
took a while but it's doing something with a hourglass now :p
The computer will shutdown when it is finished
02:25
Ah. It shut down.
What now?
Create a ghost and done (on your site)
Okay,
Put the image on your USB stick, take it to the destination computer. Boot ghost, restore image (local, disk, from image). and it should boot XP
Say, is there a way to set ghost to press OK by itself? Because I'd like to let it run overnight, but I can't really do that if it keeps asking me to "insert the next device and press Enter"
no, (or not that I know)
Ghost has a lot of options, I never used most of them
02:29
Okay
And uhm.
Once at my aunt's, how do I:
1. Create the restore partition with everything for her computer (drivers, etc.)
2. Eventually restore from that partition
..?
windows 7 32 bit keys should work on 64 right?
assuming all else is the same?
Yes.
Same key for store bought windows 32 and 64 bit versions
Not true for all OEM versions
Its dreamspark premium ;p
At worst, I spend another 40 minutes downloading again
02:32
@ariane two options.
1) Boot (e.g. from CD, DVD or USB), start ghost, restore whole disk from image (with the image on the USB drive)
2) In case the ghost does not recognise the USB drive: Boot from CD/VD/USB, partition the drive (most of drive as NTFS, one 9GB FAT32 partition. Format FAT32 partition, copy ghost file to it. Restore partition from file (select the XP parition in the ghost, it will have one extra menu)
@Hennes Can I create another tiny partition for booting with Ghost?
Or do I necessarily need Ghost externally?
Start ghost from the UBS drive or from the CD. Then the real HDD will not be in use.
Okay. And is there a way to save drivers once I've installed them correctly onto her computer?
I am never sure with USB, which motherboard supports what, and which one does not.
If you downloaded them: save the download files.
If they come via windows update: not really
02:39
I guess there isn't a Drivers folder I can backup and then just replace, eh? Would be too easy
Because I anticipate it to be a little bit of a pain to install them, mainly because wi-fi doesn't work "as is". :p
There is a drivers folder from windows, but unless you really know what you are doing: no
there's a way to backup and restore drivers automatically I think
There is a tool for it, but I never tried it
Its been eons, but sourceforge.net/projects/drvback has worked for me on XP in most cases
Anyway. 0-3:42 AM local time
I need sleep.
Disadvantage of internaltional time differences
02:43
Ouch.
All right. Thanks a ton for sticking with me. You have awesome patience.
Good night!
I just want this to work. :)
waves
Weeell theeeen.
Time for me to start that painfully long procedure.
good luck!
I don't need luck. More like patience. And/or a slave to press Enter while I shower and sleep. XD
With how much I've deleted, the size reduced. With luck the compressed version might fit on a DVD
@JourneymanGeek Help
I made a mistake, and I'm not sure whether, or how much, I've ruined things.
In Ghost, I saw weird files lying around on the "Ghost" virtual drive that is to be used to put the image on. So I thought "geez, I must've forgotten something", and proceeded to boot to Windows Xp, forgetting I had sysprepped it and I shouldn't boot it anymore. And I was alt-tabbed, and saw the "Windows is preparing to boot" screen disappear as I came back to the VM. Then I panicked and resetted. But now if I start to Windows Xp, it seems to launch normally.
Did I ruin the sysprep? Is it okay to run it again?
Don't tell me you went to sleep too, @Journey D:
03:19
sysprep is supposed to do that methinks ;p
I've not used it myself
FIRM believer in bespoke installs here
@Journeyman I know, but I think I messed it up. Should I run it over?
wouldn't hurt to other than time ;p
confirmed that the HORRIBLE noise coming out my old desktop is the fan
03:45
@Journey You should hear my current CPU cooler. Good CPU; comes with a horribly noisy cooler.
04:02
@Ariane: its a box thats been running almost all the time since 07
fan't OBVIOUSLY wobbly
04:15
Heh. I can believe you on that. @Journey

1 hour later…
05:35
@Hennes when you come, could you ping me with this? Once the image is created onto the virtual drive, how do I recuperate it considering Windows Xp is sysprepped and doesn't want to launch normally (and that the shared folder is dead). Should I let the OS load itself, and then reinstall guest additions so I get the shared folder back?

2 hours later…
07:55
Hi SU guys...
Looks like we can't discuss problems in the main site :P
It doesn't allow the phrase in questions (just kidding)
Now, I got stuck in a big issue with my 10 years old PC...
My PC is an old Pentium IV... - working with XP
The problem with it is, It freezes at some time...
and I can't understand when..???\
It runs very well in safe mode...
At normal start, it freezes somewhere..
sometimes near the welcome screen,
sometimes, near the xp loading splash screen
and most times, at the desktop..
Totally, some period within 15 mins...
This doesn't happen in safe mode...
Is there anyway to recover it...
I've asked it already in the main site and got a lot downvotes - so now, I came right away to discuss about it...
Anyone..???

Q: "Problem" word filter can be circumvented in a search engine compatible way

Daniel Beck This is not about the merits of the filter. But it exists, and its implementation is so limited it is ineffective, with good, easy workarounds. I consider this to be a bug. You might feel different and consider this to be a feature and can now go crazy fixing the more useful occurrences o...

(well, see the list of related links up the top)
@CrazyBuddy If it works in safe mode, the usual suspect is a background program, or a driver
disable all startup programs first (use msconfig in safe mode) and try that
also, did you change anything recently?
08:11
@Bob I thought of that...
Bob
Bob
if you did, it may be a better idea to revert such changes or use System Restore
@Bob I've already formatted my HDD
totally..!
Even after the formatting, the issue remains the same..! :-(
Bob
Bob
hm.. try a memory test
make sure to run multiple passes (8 tests per pass, I believe)
overnight normally works
normally, if there's even a single error, you have a memory issue
which can be due to the RAM sticks, the motherboard or the CPU - more testing (e.g. swapping out parts) is required at this point
if there's no error.. well, test first and we'll see :P
I'll be back in a bit. Maybe a couple of hours.
I'll see.. - thanks again Bob ;-)
09:06
@CrazyBuddy: got a link to that?
If it dosen't happen in safe mode, its less likely to be hardware, it may be drivers
(though checking your ram is still a good idea)
09:29
Hi @JourneymanGeek, The issue got solved with msconfig itself.... - sorry I didn't reply you guys
but now, it came up with a new problem
My audio driver doesn't run.. :-(
It indicates the volume control icon near date & time... But, it doesn't have any effect...
Re-installing the driver, comes out with a new problem:
"Device object not present"
This sounds new to me ;-)
hm
sure its the right driver?
what did you disable with msconfig?
09:59
@JourneymanGeek Nah.. I re-enabled everything, using the normal startup and rebooted my desk...
When I get into device manager, it shows that I don't have the drivers for Ethernet controller and PCI,...
Ethernet controller is somewhat queued...
Its in some kind of loop...
It shows about 10 or 20 ? with 10 or 20 drivers...
I can't understand...
My devman says that I've installed the audio controller...
10:53
hey guys
i have a problem with UML
Class Model...
Is there a need to put also methods into it
or it should only be like a databse diagram
tables
with relations
What are you trying to do?
analysis class model
11:32
hi
11:48
@Tanner I'm not really sure I know what the SM bus is, so, go ahead :D

1 hour later…
13:07
Morning,all.
ther SM bus is a system management bus. Quite a standard interface which can be used for quite non-standard stuff.
Some manufacturers use it for temperature sensors.
@Hennes, don't you ever sleep?
Not at 2 PM.
I should have gone to bed 4 hours earlier yesterday
But right now it is Noon (localtime)
Well, it doesn't matter the time of the day, you seem to be always online and in this chatroom
@Hennes You're an hour infront of me :)
Here's 11am. Well, astronomically it's 10am but magically the laws ignore that.
13:19
howdy folks
yallo
how's it going
been out of town for past few days
Good here in the UK, the snow's gone so now all we have are floods lol
Never saw snow. On the other hand, 2 weeks ago we had 46 C degrees.
13:29
@ruda.almeida ha
it's a rather pleasant 24 here
@ruda.almeida Ouch, i'd rather -2
About 6 or 7 here atm
24 is a warm summer for us lol
@HaydnWVN Celsius, right?
If it reaches 24C we start getting thicker clothes
I've seen 13C once and almost froze to death
13:45
yeah celsius
We had -19 here last winter and a 34 in the summer
one of our coldest and hottest years on record
13:58
@ruda.almeida wow.
XD
13 degree is PERFECT weather for me
night time here in Bangalore, it's abut 13 degrees, esp from Nov-Feb
Its proper tropical weather here
consistantly 25-32, cold is maybe 23
lowest its been here was 18 I think
14:04
Lowest i've had was -22
was only one night though, highest probably 35/36
@JourneymanGeek that's about how it is in my hometown
I'm perfectly fine with about 30C, maybe a bit less or a bit more. But I hate summer in February when the sun burns your skin, you need sunblock to walk on the streets and the air is so hot it feels like an oven.
The rest of the year it's OK. It's just the beginning of the year I hate so much
You either buy an air conditioner, or you take 3 to 5 baths a day, or you sit in front of the fan and don't get up.
hehe
14:40
@JourneymanGeek if that's in celcius, sure... Farenheit is another matter :P
@ruda.almeida wow... world sure is diverse. I've lived through -40C
no one but the americans use that ;p
14:43
@KronoS whoa nice
@ruda.almeida that's funny lol
@studiohack Oatmeal is awesome.
Oatmeal, XKCD and SMBC comics are obligatory daily stops.
15:06
@ruda.almeida Is SMBC safe for work? Never heard of it.
lawl...
SMBC:
(this one is just perfect!)
ahahahaha
15:37
Anybody know a way to figure out where Chrome and IE are sending their DNS queries? Nslookup comes up good but Chrome and IE and craping out.
Wireshark?
I'm using Microsoft Network Monitor, but can't find DNS queries anywhere O_o
Never heard of Microsoft Network Monitor.
ok, found it
Bob
Bob
@ruda.almeida where are you, if you dom't mind me asking? :P
15:43
@Hennes Know of any ways to get windows drivers for a usb ethernet adapter to install in a linux environment
Bob
Bob
@ruda.almeida @JourneymanGeek not always...
I'm pretty sure I've seen a couple of NSFW SMBCs before
Phew. Finally caught up on Su/SF/LJ/DW bacllog
@user88311 Might work with some sort of NDIS wrapper.
@Bob Didn't even see you online, any ideas on a way to get windows drivers for a usb ethernet adapter to install in a linux environment
Ugly though.
Bob
Bob
@user88311 sorry, no :\
15:45
yeah just wondering if there was a way
Bob
Bob
I've never really dealt with Linux hardware interaction
I've been lucky enough to have it just work (TM) on my hardware - haven't tried more esoteric devices yet though
If there is a driver (either in the kernel or as module) then use that.
And then it usually is just a question of plugging the device in and everything just works
Bob
Bob
is ethernet over USB standardised in any way?
If there is no driver: Either use another cards (which is why you read which chipsets are used before you buy it), or use the windows binary driver wrapped in an emulator.
Yes and no.
Bob
Bob
hm.. Wikipedia article o.O
Ethernet over USB has two meanings: Ethernet devices via USB and USB as an Ethernet network. Sometimes, it can also refer to the recycling of damaged USB cables as Ethernet cord-splice patches. Ethernet devices via USB The ability to connect Ethernet devices via USB ports is known as Ethernet over USB. There are many low-cost commercial adapters available to do this. The links below describe the technical details on how the technology works. Treat USB as an Ethernet network The Linux kernel for the iPAQ uses this communications strategy exclusively, since the iPAQ hardware has neithe...
15:48
Ethernet is standarised. If you plug in a USB NIC then you are adding a NIC and using normal ethernet (and an ethernet cable)
@Bob The day a 3G modem was recognized by Ubuntu and the connection parameters for my countrie's phone companies were already filled... It was jawdropping.
However there is also a 'usb to usb' (with USB cables) with a 'sort of ethernet emulation'. And that one has several standards
@Bob Rio.
Bob
Bob
wait, that's something different. bleh.
@user88311 which device is this? model number?
Drat. That wiki article says it better (and appeared while I was lookling at the text input box while correcting typos)
15:51
nexxtech usb 2.o ethernet adapter, model no.2513258a
2.0*
It was the only one any stores around here at the time that weren't mac specific
Ok, that is a normal NIC
AX88772A
Scroll down that page to "Linux kernel 3.x/2.6.x Driver "
Bob
Bob
@Hennes how did you find that? o.O
Google for " 2.o ethernet adapter, model no.2513258a", ended up on a sales page. Downloaded the manual (for windows)
What is the difference between owncloud.com and owncloud.org ?
Bob
Bob
15:57
weird. I'm looking at the manual righ-
oh.
Then googled on the circled model
Bob
Bob
that's.. wow.
good job..
I was reading the specs and regulatory stuff at the end of the manual :P
Hope it works. Sometimes those things chance chipset and needed drivers without updating the model name/number
I ran a few times into problems due to that, so I am now focussed on chipsets and models rather than the name on the packaging
Anyway. AFK (shower, cleaning, taking garbage outside... all the fun jobs in life)
