Back home :) - Long day... tired!
I get why people post computer problems on Stack Overflow if they don't know about Super User, but I don't get people who post programming questions here WHEN they already have a Stack Overflow account superuser.com/questions/260147/… :S
00:43
lol
i was wondering about the same question ;p
i'd assume he thought it was a VS question and not a 'programming' question
mwahahaha. I love easily googleable answers. goldfishrepinabarrel.

Posted by Jeff Atwood on February 22nd, 2011

On Podcast #58, Joel and I had a disagreement. Not the first, and certainly won’t be the last:

Joel says that the only bad simple question is a duplicate simple question. I say simple questions are OK as long as they’re actually interesting (in some way) for other users to consider and answer. To prove his point, Joel actually asks the question on Stack Overflow: How do I move the turtle in LOGO? Do you think this question adds value?

We still have this disagreement. Our community is now struggling with the very same issue across multiple network sites: …

Good evening, everyone.

Q: Are answers that just contain links elsewhere really "good answers"?

romandasI have often wondered at the practice on SO, SF, and the other sites where someone will ask a question and an answer will come in that says 'Look here: http://link elsewhere". Rarely will the link have exactly the answer necessary; often it's an entire article.. yet these answers get voted up. W...

I could put my auto comment on your latest recent answers:
> Whilst this may theoretically answer the question, <a href="http://meta.stackoverflow.com/q/8259">it would be preferable</a> to include the essential parts of the answer here, and provide the link for reference.
@TomWij: well it depends - i use links where the explaination would require large numbers of images to show what's needed, or to link to the site of a specific tool. In addition, its the sort of question where i know the 'rough' answer, but not the specifics. superuser.com/questions/260133/… was the one i had in mind
It's generally frowned upon. It's good that you help them, but watch out with answering with only a link too much.
Yeah, looks fine, it's not easy to get that into your post...
01:39
I spent my sunday feeling like crap :P
its still something he could have googled easily. I was actually going to look up, and go into how to set up your own transport, but that seemed far more relevant. most of my answers involve tools tather than knowledge, so there's a tendancy for 'you can use this to do this, and here's a link'
its monday ><
@MarkSzymanski sorry to hear that
@studiohack: It's alright, I'll get feeling better soon. It's just allergies.
oh what kind of allergies @MarkSzymanski? :(
Just general, sneezy allergies @studiohack.
01:41
@TheJourneymangeek: Yeah, no problem. We have a similar high votes yet unanswered question that has a sticky comment:
But, Spring Break! :D
No school next week ^^
yay! @MarkSzymanski :)
oh I've had that @MarkSzymanski, and I hate it, I get it when pollen is around
@studiohack: If it doesn't exist yet, it might be handy to create a Recycle Bin room to migrate big chunks of spam/off-topic/(removed) messages to. Similar like they are doing at Gaming...
Going to sleep now, early school tomorrow.
01:43
night @TomWij sleep well!
and I think you addressed your last message to the wrong person? @TomWij
I'm surprised at the amount of upvotes I got on this answer of mine!

A: Any shortcut for "cd .." ?

Mark SzymanskiNot by default (There might be some exceptions to this), there isn't. But if you use the alias command you can create a shortcut like this: alias ..="cd .." This will allow you to use the command .. to do cd ...

No, that (about recycle bin) was for any moderator, and your the one active here so you can do the duty. :D
ahh, for topics like my photo show-off? ;P @TomWij
Could be, just useful way to prune things that don't belong here without leaving a huge trail of messages.
This is what I meant:

  Android Hell

lol no it's the android hell. It Is a Real Place, and You Will...
Or well, a recycle bin channel for off-topic talk is probably even better.
ahhh, mod only and secret?
01:50
No! Wrong! "We hope your brief detention has been a pleasant one."
Well, doesn't have to be like that...
lol
THATS an example of a question that's too simple ><
It's amazing how well SU's rep/privilege system works.
agreed! @MarkSzymanski
Any spammers are gone in an instant, and the mods are never corrupt.
01:58
thats a high compliment @MarkSzymanski (regarding the corrupt mods) xD
Heh, as far as I've heard there haven't ever been any :P
@MarkSzymanski : what would a corrupt mod gain? ;p
@TheJourneymangeek: Nothing, which is the point :P
yes!
and that's the basis for an incorruptable system
02:02
I'm leaving.
Bye, @studiohack.
I was pretending to be mad about your conversation about corrupt mods :P
but I need to go for now, have a good one guys! feel better soon @MarkSzymanski
Bye, @studiohack. Thanks!
02:03
and whereever you are, @TheJourneymangeek, have a good day!
lol

hmm
I'm wondering if i should try to fix my middle mouse button with tape
02:30
Goodnight everyone.

6 hours later…
08:11
@TomWij I already have @TomWij, check the password in the blog :P

1 hour later…
09:35
Mornin
I have finally topped 4k on SU ;)
yay
wonders whatever happened to the rep graph
I know - it was useful that
more that i found it amusing ;p
I could easilly see when I had had a slow day with that
Start a meta thread to get the graph back and all vote it up
hah
66
Q: Eeeek! Where did the reputation graph go?

Matt SpinelliThe reputation graph no longer shows up on my profile when I click on the reputation tab. Is it gone now (like the mail icon)? Or has it been moved somewhere else? I do like the more detailed summary of reputation earned. Is it possible to still keep some form of graph for easy visualization of...

09:43
Yay - that userscript works nicely. I have a graph again! ;)
hmm
usescript = greasemonkey?
10:29
Yay! My new drives have been dispatched!
gratz @MattJenkins that's an impressive gain indeed ;)
I'm out for most of the day, so behave you guys!
As if we would!
10:42
Oh how I love doing spyware cleanup jobs...
10:54
Plus of course the customer forgot to put the power supply for this laptop into the bag (assumed the PSU for the other laptop would work as it's the same make)

1 hour later…
12:10
afternoon all
12:28
this just might become one of my favourite Stack Exchange site
Bit of a petrol head are you?
13:02
a little bit, yes @MattJenkins
Compression and encryption: What are they? Which one first? Answered here http://t.co/kiMMC9z by our new super star editor! #superuserblog
awesome post there
Ya way to go @mattjenkins
And now I'm out as I've got a lot to do b4 I head to school this morn
nice post @MattJenkins
heh... thanks all blushes
Cool, a marketing company just sent me a free pen with my company name etched into it by lazer. It has a built in LED torch. They want me to buy loads of them, but just one will suit me fine.
Ideal for if I have my head in a computer under a desk.
But bugger buying any. ;)
13:27
lol
14:22
Just dug out my old old old mac and booting it up... seems to work ok
Ewwww, why'd you go and do that?
So I have something to reference when answering OS/X questions.
Awww... it's a poor little power mac G3... :(
350MHz, 512 MB PC133 RAM
And yet it is just as responsive as a quad-core intel with 16 gigs of ram running Windows 7...
15:17
Ahhh that's the problems with machines that run faster all the time, people write larger more bloaty code to run on them thus a superfast modern machine with new software seems to run as fast as an old machine with older software...
I tell you something though, Win98 was awesome fast on a 2.4GHz processor. Had no support for games and crashed every 5 minutes, but it was fast.
15:53
Heh
And that's the neighbour's greenhouse door repaired - any more mircales for me to perform today?
Hmmm... I must have upgraded the CD drive in this Mac at some point in the past - it's a DVD rewriter.
thoughts on editing the title/content of this question to make it more accurate? superuser.com/questions/208706/…
since the OP wasn't interested in low-level formatting at all...
@Mokubai : Should try win2k on it ;p
@Tyler : He really just wants to wipe his drive
so replacing 'low level format' with wipe would be accurate?
correct
also just eliminating "low"
Alright, i've edited it.
16:45
The reason why I need this is irrelevant to anyone.
Emergency deleting his pr0n stash?
17:13
Anyone here?
@MarkSzymanski well, I've just arrived, so ... erm... yes?
@DMA57361: Do you know why the default password (admin) wouldn't be working for a Linksys router?
I'm trying to access the router's web page.
And the router's password hasn't been changed AFAIK.
no idea off the top of my head
tried "admin" and empty?
and "linksys"?
17:15
None of those work.
oh well, least that's the basics covered
This guide shows the exact same model. However, the password/username combination aren't working.
Ohhhh, wait.
it's working otherwise? (ie, the routers booting properly?)
I think this person has a weird setup.
I'm helping a friend, trying to get port forwarding set up.

1 hour later…
18:27
Yay! Got a first version of my Registry Tool done:
1
A: Is there a software that can index the contents of the registry for quick lookups?

TomWijIntroduction I've written an application that indexes the registry and another application that searches this index. This results in near instant results while you type, this allows you to quickly search several things. See this video demonstration, shows how quick results are, three different...

@TomWij Yay! Gratz
Tell me: Why does Windows struggle with simple multitasking so much?
Because I am copying some files off a USB drive, everything else is reduced to a crawl... Including something as simple as typing this.
@MattJenkins: What Windows verison?
Strange, virus scanner?
And heaven forbid I should want to do something difficult like bring a window to the front
18:33
Because normal I/O doesn't have that effect, but a bad behaving virus scanning might have influence with high CPU usage.
I'll tell yuo when task manager opens...
Firefox 4 RC is really nice
Nope - 80% idle except sometimes when forefox's plugin container pops up with 30 ot 40% cpu - the rest is idle.
FF's normal usage + the plugin container make it a hog @MattJenkins
True, I'm copying about 60 Gig of data, and most of the files are around 1 to 2 gig each
But it's like it's using polled IO and it's unable to do anything else while it's polling
then the copy finishes and it's back to normal speed.
18:41
@MattJenkins: Perhaps a driver then, Task Manager doesn't show those as separate, try Process Explorer and check DPCs/Interrupt/System.
Can't be arsed. It's not a problem, just annoying, and once my new drives arrive and I have got them installed (tomorrow) I am going to back up the contents of this laptop and format it.
18:53
You used to be able to click on your rep score in the page header to see how close you were to unlocking the next feature (e.g. start bounties). How do you get to that page now?
@briankb Hover over your name in the top bar and select privileges
there we go. For some odd reason I didn't see the set bounty link on the android SE site. turns out I just wasn't looking hard enough
I have the only featured question there now >:)
@DMA57361, @IvoFlipse, @Sathya - see my MSO post and let me know what you think (either on here or on MSO):
1
Q: Show number of mod flags & pending suggested edits in window title

studiohackAs a moderator, I want to take care of flags and suggested edits as soon as possible. Many times, I have wished that the number of flags/edits would appear in the window title. This would increase the speed in which flags are dealt with and also increase efficiency. Is it possible that we ...

anyone else is welcome to pitch in their feedback/thoughts/comments as well :)
19:08
Should I start a thread to have the rep cap doubled?
2
no, @MattJenkins, I would downvote :P
@studiohack presumably are you asking for them to auto-update as well, and not require a user refresh? If so, you might want to make that more explicit
@studiohack heh
@DMA57361 good point will add

2 hours later…
20:45
Hi. Anyone else seen their number of consecutive days visited reset to 1 without good cause - mine seems to have done it twice in the last week or so.
visited 24 days, 24 consecutive
Nope.
I think you may have slept through a day
Today is Wednesday. What do you make it?
@Linker3000 if you click the #days,#consecutive text you'll get a calendar showing which days the site think you missed
@DMA57361 It says yesterday (sun) and also last Sunday were missed, but I was definitely on the site yesterday. Oh well.
@Linker3000 hmmm, and you're UK anyway, aren't you? So probably not getting caught out by the UTC days
Maybe you should do what I do... Spend all day every day sat here staring at SU
20:52
@MattJenkins Nah - that just makes you seem like a saddo
Only seem?
Just because I don't have a life... ;)
@DMA57361 Hmm maybe I visited but didn't actually post anything or login?
@Linker3000 just loading the homepage doesn't seem to count, but sometimes loading a question does... I'm not sure of the specifics, but posting something isn't required
@DMA57361 Just a bit of a bugger as I was at 76 consecutive days when it first lost count - not that I am devastated.
@Linker3000 lol... I like it...

1 hour later…
22:10
Anyone there?
@MattJenkins what's up?
know anything about Synergy on OS X?
OS X is not my fortay at all
22:36
same @MattJenkins, don't know anything about OSX...have played with Synergy quite a bit though between Windows systems
@studiohack Well, I have synergy up and running (have had for a while) and I'm trying to get this Mac working with it.
I've always been frustrated, @MattJenkins, by how buggy Synergy can be
At first it appears to work fine, until you move the mouse to the mac, when you realiase that actually, although it's connected fine, and it's all communicating ok, there is no mouse. Not on the mac anyway. It just sits in the top left corner of the screen doing nothing.
The client when debugging tells me 'entering screen' and 'leaving screen' so the mouse data is getting to the mac ok
ouch! never had anything like that...my biggest problem was that I could always get the synergy connection to work for a while, say a week, and then the config would break and it would be hard to reestablish a connection...
I have upgraded to the newest 1.4.2 on all systems (first thing I tried)
22:42
is Synergy under development again?
Yep. They have merged Synergy and Synergy+ into one tree again.
really?
how's that working out?
Yay, near daily rep cap, didn't foresee that the problem answer would become my top answer. :-/
shrugs
They have a spangly new website, so it looks good.
Anyway, I have 'solved' my slow USB transfers...
I realised just now I was being really really thick.
This external drive has eSATA as well as USB ;)
slaps forehead
yay, I just hit the rep cap for the first time ever on any SE site today, and that was at MSO @TomWij
22:45
heh
its a nice site, @MattJenkins
I hit the rep cap mid afternoon... Kind of makes the rest of the day a bit pointless...
it does @MattJenkins
Hey all
hey @Rahul

Q: What to do with my .name domain name?

RahulSince 2006 or so I've owned a .name domain name (3rd level, eg. john.doe.name). I bought it originally at a service called FreeYourID.com, which offered the .name domain as well as automatically making it your OpenID (provided by myOpenID). Since then I've used that domain as my OpenID on numerou...

Oh, I was going to ask about the question I just posted but it got moved to pro webmasters :B
Right
to Webmasters
Thanks! I didn't know there was a stackexchange for webmasters
yeah, click on it, and it will take you through to Webmasters Pro
np @Rahul, good luck! :)
interesting that you forgot about Webmasters
@Rahul, because you answered a question there :P
1
A: How do you save/export changes made in Firebug?

RahulYou're looking for Backfire, a client/server script (currently javascript/C#). It doesn't require Firebug (it's not a Firebug addon), and it works in both Firefox and Webkit-based browsers. With Backfire you can change the page's state any way you want (Firebug is a great way) and then click the ...

Hi everyone :D
22:59
I guess the network is getting pretty big
big enough for me to forget sites
hey @BloodPhilia :D
what's up!
Nothing much :D
I'll brb!
Oh, I probably just answered that question because we made Backfire and were googling questions about Firebug in order to answer them
Well ttyl, thanks again @studiohack!
have a good one @Rahul
Hmmm... SU just questioned whether I was a human or not...
23:03
sweet! I used to get those all the time until i became mod
j/k @MattJenkins lol - but I did get them frequently because I edited a lot
I guess it must think I'm just too damn good at this to be human ;)
Back!
@studiohack I used to get them a lot, but not anymore!
because you crossed 10K @BloodPhilia
@studiohack Oh right
Didn't know... Sherlock XD
Sherlock?
why sherlock @BloodPhilia? :D
23:13
@studiohack Never mind xD It's an expression
I was being sarcastic when I said "didn't know"
that's why
ah gotcha @BloodPhilia :P
dual conversations much?
@studiohack Y U NO LIKE MY DUAL CONVO?
@BloodPhilia I DO! I DO. I'M DA KINGO OF DUAL CONVERS.

@Wil Lol, that's nice xD
Wil
Wil
@BloodPhilia Thanks!
I'm impressed @Wil, didn't know you could do that kind of thing with Dropbox
Wil
Wil
Lol... was going to answer before the edit... I have always been interested in programming, but only in the past few months I have been spending a lot of time doing it... If you check out my SO account, you can see my questions have gone from basic to a lot more advanced! (And I had a dummy account (not hidden from mods!) for the questions I was really embarrassed about asking!)
As for Dropbox, I used to use Microsoft Mesh with a few family members and used to leave text notes everywhere and always wanted to do this, but never had the time (or ability), then recently started doing the same thing with Dropbox so I thought I would like to create something... It shares files, so why not use a shared file for the chat log! It isn't perfect, but it works
23:34
Hmm... It would appear I have just bought a Cisco Catalyst 2924
24 port gigabit cisco switch
£43
<3 ebay
would appear?
;p
Well, it just sort of happened.
I hadn't intended to buy it - honest
This is not good. Today I earned £45 and spent £43...
lol
you still made 2 pounds!

23:42
@TheJourneymangeek :)
But saturday I earned nothing and spent £184
I'm wondering how to handle my current serious gear-crush. I can't actually realistically save up for it before it goes obsolete, and my parental unit won't actually let me buy hardware ;p

I have a room full of old server/network equipment... Need to sell it all - should of done it years ago :(
@MattJenkins Welcome to the world of indie IT guy!
@wil : but people generally don't ;p
@wil Get it on Ebay... or send it to me ;)
@TheJourneymangeek Ram-raid?
23:44
has a 20 year old system that just stopped workin
@matt : thinkpad x220.
Wil

I have 3x (12 I think) Compaq SANs, tons of GB Network cards - some old Cisco equipment... just loads of stuff.... It was an office clear out and they were going to put it in the bin, I said I would take it for free, but it has just stuck in my front room for the past 4+ years :(
if it costs around the same as the X201, i'll need to save between 2.5k to 3K with a 300 dollar allowance
@MattJenkins : i don't 'need' a new computer. but gawd that thing is shiny
@wil I'll take the SANs off your hands...
@wil : local LUG might have someone who'd want it ;p
Wil
Wil
23:46
@MattJenkins Well, I think it is worth more in scrap metal than anything else - weighs a tonne... I am going to write a list of everything and look up value...
Put it all on ebay at $1 starting value (per item) with buyer collects only.
Wil
Wil
@MattJenkins They are SCSI or something direct to the machine, not really Sans, I forget the name - and they only take the very expensive scsi drives... £ per GB SUCKS
@MattJenkins As I said, I think they are worth more in metal value... Got some 4/6u servers... weigh a tonne!
Wil
Wil
I really should of sold when I got them, but I thought I could use them :(
23:48
@Wil Ah, maybe not then :(
Right, bed time for me.
night @MattJenkins
sleep well!
