Stupid question, a 1000W power supply and a 850 W power supply with a used power of say 500W~ should draw about the same amount of actual power, right? The 1000W and 850W models of a PSU are the same price and I'm wondering if there's any reason not to get the 1000W
Other than the fact I'll never actually use 1000W. Probably
Does a 500 watt power supply always pull 500 watts? Or does it depend on the load being placed on the computer?
It's a n00b hardware question. I'm trying to figure out how much it costs to run my compuer without buying a meter that actually measures power usage.
efficiency drops off by a barely significant factor above, say, 60% utilization (but the only real efficiency pain is when you hit 90-100% utilization) and also very bad below 20% but all PSUs are gonna be like that
a 1000W PSU operating at lower efficiency is going to draw more energy than a smaller PSU operating at the same efficiency, BUT if you have the load closer to 50% on the higher wattage PSU (which you will), it will actually be more efficient
given your expected load of 500W it might be reasonable to go with the 850 because the efficiency when idle (10 - 20% utilization) will eat up a lot of unnecessary energy on the 1000W
especially if you have a recent system with very advanced power saving features
you can use a meter that you plug into the wall and plug your computer into it... other than that, no, but there are OS-level estimates of usage
however, if you have an Ivy Bridge or Sandy Bridge system, I can guarantee your idle usage will be around 30 - 50W plus about 30W per discrete graphics card
idle = sitting at desktop with no programs running and no disk I/O
the only time you'd need more than 850 is if you have TONS of USB peripherals plugged into an unpowered USB hub plugged into the motherboard, plus tons of disks, plus FurMark running one or more extreme high-end GPUs
thing is, 100W is closer to the happy efficiency levels on a 850W than it is on the 1000W, because 100 / 850 is a higher utilization than 100 / 1000
so you won't get that REALLY "sad" efficiency at the extreme low end of the spectrum that you'd see on a way overspecced PSU
at least if the Corsair graph is similar to the PSU you're buying
20 - 50% utilization is the best place to be, but the greater your usage range, the harder it is to find a PSU that's optimal for all your use cases
basically if you have lots of discrete GPUs, or large GPUs, or GPUs that take a ridiculous amount of energy when under load and a tiny amount when idle, or a ton of disks or USB devices, then your usage metrics are going to have a wider min/max range
the wider your min/max range of wattage draw, the harder it is to find a good PSU that will be happy with your usage at all times
I have a 1200W at home because I don't want my system lacking sufficient power when under max load, and it can actually use a good bit of that, but I get owned by that "unhappy" efficiency on the extreme low-end (idle) because my Ivy Bridge undervolts everything and only draws like 20W when idle
so I waste a lot of energy when idle to prevent the situation of not having enough power when needed
but it doesn't sound like your setup is physically capable of drawing 850W unless you water cool your GPU, overclock and overvolt it by a lot, and run Furmark
I only have one graphics card at the moment, so yeah, pretty impossible to hit 850W. I'm considering a second card but don't have one yet, I'd just like the option and this PSU is on sale
But I've also been spending a lot recently and the cost-benefit doesn't look great on a second card right now
Well one card is doing fine right now; it all depends on how well eyefinity runs and if I actually like eyefinity. Got my displayport adapter but didn't have time to test it yesterday
I have a Windows Server 2008 R2 Enterprise SP1 machine that I log into and use to manage virtual machines running on multiple Hyper-V servers on our domain. Sometimes, when I right-click on a remote VM, the Hyper-V Manager will crash and display the following error message:

just take a picture of a PYT with decent makeup and a professional camera and shop out the background... it annoys me so much how we shop the face itself... totally unnecessary
understated beauty is better than unnaturally overaccentuated features anyway
At home I'm running Fedora 17, and I've grown accustomed to quickly scanning through open tabs by using the mouse wheel while hovering over the tab bar. It's a very natural gesture for me now.
At least once a week at work (usually Mondays), I attempt to use the same technique on chrome running o...
I need to get off my lazy arse and upgrade to a cheaper, newer server, I'm running an aging EQ10
pretty sure it's going to be with Hetzner but I can buy a "low-end" Hetzner server now and it'll satisfy my requirements that previously could only be satisfied by a "high-end" server
because my requirements have been fixed while component capabilities have grown
"Analysts speculated that the reasons for the split could include dissatisfaction with early Windows 8 sales and customer feedback, as well as Sinofsky's reportedly difficult personality."

at least Ballmer is pretty frank when something goes awry... and it's hilarious how no matter how much money these companies spend on contingencies for their presentations something ALWAYS goes wrong
All of my servers are currently flooded by salt water. Is it possible for each platter in a multi-platter drive to be separated, cleaned, imaged, and merged into a new virtual drive for data recovery?
*NOTE: if your server still has issues due to confused kernels, and you can't reboot - the simplest solution proposed with gnu date installed on your system is: date -s now. This will reset the kernel's internal "time_was_set" variable and fix the CPU hogging futex loops in java and other usersp...
@GeorgeDuckett I hate trying to figure out clothing sizing... Right now I'm in between an L and XL, and it's like... I have to make a life decision right now, am I going to finally lose weight and go back down to L, or should I stop kidding me self and get the XL?
@Mikhail I wouldn't call them sexist scum bags. It's a site/contest for computer geeks, this is pure economics. If you'd like a girlie shirt and they're not printed yet, you could simply ask them.
@slhck Thanks. The contest rules does say "if you live outside the USA and we are unable ship your prize to you, you may be asked to purchase your prize and submit your receipt to Stack Exchange to be reimbursed"
@RakibAnsary No, shipping shirts won't be too hard. I had troubles myself with an older contest since they bought an Amazon voucher in the US which I couldn't use in Germany, but I still got the shirts :)
@RakibAnsary I guess in the end they actually managed to buy one from the German store! But it took quite a long time :P But if Amazon is not shipping, that's a different issue of course
Oh, also, I wrote a review of my tablet/ultrabook on Amazon. I know someone on here was saying their boss wanted to make a purchase of new Sony laptop and whatnot.
@slhck When I got my page I see it says level 3 and 92% towards level 4. I haven't gotten any emails about this. I also see my icon by level 3? So do I get something or not?
@Mikhail That means you were eligible for a prize in level 3, but…
> prizes will be won by lottery of the users completing that level. If a user does not win a prize for their level, they will be entered to win the prize in the level below
@OliverSalzburg I watched the entire Surface keynote, and from an entertainment perspective as well as from a "does this guy really make me want this device" perspective, everyone except Sinofsky did that perfectly
Heh, it's a for fun contest that was intended to get a good database of initial Windows 8 content early in its lifecycle. Prizes are just an incentive to get people in on it. :P
Also, Skyfall was a great movie. Sony also provided VAIO laptops for the computers in it. Disappointingly, my tablet/ultrabook wasn't featured, except briefly in a Sony advert before the movie started. :p
So a couple of Windstream (windstreambusiness.com) techs are setting up one of our offices for internet. They found it utterly unbelievable that I would ask them if they brought a router. WTF?
The only thing I learned form using Windows 8 is that I hate hate hate Microsoft. They could have had 2 UIs side by side, instead they want to treat me like some kind of easily distracted monkey. I used to compute, now all i do is move my mouse back and forth.
@r.tanner.f That's the least important detail and can be ommited usually. It helps if you're living together with too much people and you somehow don't have your own mailing box.
Help, I'm a Linux user who is salivating over the Surface Pro! I crave that perfected hardware engineering! I crave... I crave... Aw man, I'll just use my boring old Nexus 7, I guess. :(
@TomWijsman The USB cable I have plugged into mine right now has a few mills of overhang, and a second one would just fit - anything bigger wouldn't. If you used a short extension cable (I have some that are only about 10cm long) you could also have some flexibility in where the bt dongle was mounted.
So we wanted to renew it tomorrow. But my boss noticed an hour ago that pretty much no service any longer worked because everything is tunneled through HTTPS
But he had to get some work done tonight, so he wanted me to renew it. But I couldn't, because I could access the server... no RDP thru HTTPS :\
And the server is located in his new house, which is basically a construction site and he wasn't there
So he had to drive around for an hour to get there... and the cellar was locked :(
And he had given the key to one of the worker on the construction site who lives 35km away
And then I had the brilliant idea of setting my clock back...
