or "get stuck behind the naked bike ride, get delayed 2 hours"
(yes this is a real event in portland, no i do not attend)
that sounds disgusting @nhinkle
I would hold off for a bit... I'm about to release some more SSD blog posts (BTW you should check them out and see what you think) and hopefully that'll help our situation for a bit
ok thanks @KronoS :)
i've been reading your stuff. i'll log in and proof-read your draft posts if you'd like

"iPhone battery low: unable to use Maps app to find directions. ask local resident for direction advice or try to find your way with a traditional map? (choose to continue)"
06:01
yes please... oh do you have access to the new site @nhinkle
i believe ivo set me up
oh, did we move the blog @KronoS?
@studiohack you didn't hear?!
so I'm no longer in because it is a new site?
06:02
yep @studiohack
I heard that it was official (CONGRATS!! btw)
we need to get them to one-box SU blog posts
but I didn't know we moved it

Q: The Super User Blog -- now officially blessed!

Jeff AtwoodGreat job on the blog! After a call today with Ivo, we decided that the Super User Blog is now sufficiently awesome to be highlighted in the footer! You'll note that the blog link in the Super User footer now points to http://blog.superuser.com/ And it will correctly update to flag [new] p...

06:03
that's awesome!
ya I was on cloud nine for a couple of hours when I heard that
Jeff actually said good work to me personally on chat the other night... was pretty surprise
I'm willing to help with the blog, by proofreading, etc
buh. forgot my SU blog password. guess i'll have to reset
thanks for the invite @nhinkle, does that give me access?
this always happens
they need to get OpenID working there
yes @studiohack
though i think mods had access by default
06:04
yeah they do, I was talking about the blog itself? @nhinkle sorry for not clarifying
oh. no, @studiohack, you'll have to get ivo or rebecca to add you
ah okay, will ask Ivo
this is possibly the best thing having access to MSDNAA has ever done for me: technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ee460909.aspx
looks nice!
sadly it's not available to anyone except for enterprise customers
06:13
well I'm gonna go, it is late here
good night @nhinkle, @KronoS :)
'night @studiohack
nice talking
and good morning @Sathya :)
good night @studiohack !
same here @nhinkle - liked your photos, keep it up!
thanks!

Q: Is discussion of techniques for removing DRM permitted?

Jeremy BanksI just asked a question about how to remove DRM from Kindle books that I had purchased and it was promptly closed by the moderator studiohack with the following comment: We don't encourage this kind of behavior here on Super User, thus off-topic. However, before posting this question I did ...

i'm curious to see what the official policy is as well
oh and my rep is fifty fifty haha
hmm
drm is vile :(
DRM is a scourge, but alas, still protected under law in many countries
my impression is that Amazon wouldn't like it if the Kindle books were broken to be used on other devices...
so that's why I closed his question...
anyways, I should really be out of here
06:28
yup
toodles
i need to go too
talk to you guys later
my issue is, it affects legit customers more than pirates ;p
06:52
Gimme coffee...!! Yawn...Morning!
splashes some coffee on @Linker3000
@Sathya Thx - waking up now!
...another day - another fight with VMWare looms...
@Linker3000 s/VMWare/SQL\/PL\/SQL for my
@Sathya OK, I won't swap days with you!!!
hm
/me hasn't messed with VMs in a while. darned schoolwork ;p
07:05
I'm setting up an ESXi box that will eventually be used for about 7 hosts but the USB passthru (to monitor a UPS) has decided to stop working - it was fine on Friday but yesterday ESXi decided there were no USB ports to passthru. Might have to shift UPS monitoring to a real box.
Well, time to get up. Have a good day everyone. Sathya, enjoy your afternoon/evening.
@Linker3000 thanks!
08:12
morning all

2 hours later…
@TheJourneymangeek, do you keep changing your gravatar... or have I imagined that?
i only changed it once ._.
fair enough, maybe I only just noticed...
Mornin' everyone!

What should we do with questions that may potentially be used to a malicious end? Should we facilitate such questions? meta.superuser.com/questions/2212/… @Sathya @IvoFlipse @studiohack @DMA57361 @Diago @Wil @KronoS @everyone - I personally think we shouldn't facilitate the "obvious" ones like the one in the meta-post.
I'm not sure that breaking DRM can be used for particularly malicious purposes, but it could be used for immoral or illegal purposes.
That said - what about questions from people asking to reset "their" Windows password, when really they want to break in to their flatmates laptop or something...
@DMA57361 Still, I think that would be "less" obvious somehow
oh quite
but unless it's something that 100% can only be illegal, etc, we've probably got to work on a case-by-case basis
(hi @DMA57361, humdrum @BloodPhilia )
@Sathya No more fruity?
10:23
I'm not sure what to say @BloodPhilia
@DMA57361 : i've had to break into one of my own linux systems once. ;p
@BloodPhilia I'll randomize it :P
@Sathya Ah okay =P variation, variation
just like different fruity juices :P @BloodPhilia
10:24
@TheJourneymangeek and that's the problem - there are legitimate and illegal/malicious/etc reasons to want to do that
@DMA57361 : though the question in question would have the same legality if you swapped 'ebook' with audio or video
@TheJourneymangeek Which I would also like to see closed...
with computer password changing (as opposed to bypass) the tools are not dodgy
MANY DRM removers happen to be
@BloodPhilia : personally i'm in some degree of agreement, but primarily cause SU is US based, and some companies tend to be a bit overzealous about such things
I'm afraid I have to go now! Bye everyone
(not to mention, i'm a firm believer in the 'if you have to ask how to hack it, your skills are too weak' catagory ;p)
10:29
@TheJourneymangeek lol, but isn't that partly what SU is here for?
@DMA57361: only when it comes to dodgy things ;p
basically, i wouldn't recommend using a DRM cracking software without knowing specifically where its from - and in many cases, such software is well.. dubious
but that's just me. I have used cracking software before, but generally with some idea of how dodgy it is.
Oh, I get that, but what was the "hmm" for?
i was thinking how how best to explain it
and trying and failing from using dodgy
ah, ok, I'd assumed it was something else because of the time lapse :)
10:54
lol
english isn't what i think in, despite it quite almost being my native language ;p
lol
"dodgy" conveys your meaning quite well
its overused
;p
meh, if it works it works
I have a bigger vocabulary than that, i think. I must have left it somewhere XD
lol, over on English.SE, possibly?
10:59
there's such a thing? ;p
indeed there is

The Cloud is THE future!
Put all your data there
@Linker3000: i'm old skool. I have a small atom box as a personal server alongside the shiny cheap fast VPS ;p
@TheJourneymangeek Too right - the Cloud based CRM pre-dates me here and I am currently setting up the server which will allow us to bring it in-house.
tho, cloud is also the past. its mainframes all over again ;p

Grrr... I hate it when customers get antsy because their email is down twice in one week...
This time it wasn't my fault - the colo has power problems.
Time to diversify and host in a second colo alongside this one...

Power Issues in Blue Sqauare 2 and 3 — 2011-03-17 11:37
Dear Customer,

We are currently experiencing some power issues in Blue Square 2 and 3, as such we are currently working with the Data Centre in order to resolve power issues.

Dear Customer,
The power has been restored, servers are being powered on at the moment.
The data center is currently running on generator power while the UPS system is investigated. Further updates to follow.
12:42
@MattJenkins I wonder if that is why our hosted CRM is hosed
@Sathya Not a very good place to find Mac OS X Server sysadmins...they seem to be a rare breed
could be - it's a massive data center
13:00
woo - new VPS is online
13:13
Now to set up MySQL replication...

Ok, replication running...

Sneak peak into a program I'm writing to answer a SU post: EnumerateRegistry(Function, path + subKey.Name + "\\", subKey);
And now to test it, I'm going to write the entire registry to a file, this is guaranteed to go wrong...
... BSOD here we come...?
How would that cause a BSOD? :-D
Well, it's windows... just coughing wrongly can cause a BSOD...
yay - backup mail server works...
14:13
Well, pushing the limits is something you could do, but it doesn't result in a BSOD.
The program did manage to write the first hive name, it's progress... :P
Dumped 30 MB this time, yay...
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\*\HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\*\shell\HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\*\shell\removeproperties\HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\*\shell\removeproperties\DropTarget
Something fishy is going on with the path though... :D
14:32
lol
That is more than fishy...
That is downright perverse
@TomWij That's not a path, it's crazy paving.
Well, our CRM is back after a 3 hour outage at the hosting providers - still no answer as to why. Need to get the VMWare server finished to we can bring it back in house.
UPS -> VMWare USB Passthru - > Linux host -> UPS Monitoring s/w is not working too well.
May have to do the UPS monitoring under Windows ;-(
What UPS is it?
SmartUPS 3KVA Rackmount
14:39
Doesn't that just present itself as a USB serial device? Couldn't you just use the windows drivers to get the serial end working then share the serial through vmware?
or doesn't windows see it like that?
IIRC the linux host I set up the other week saw it just as serial
(or I may be talking complete blocks)
@MattJenkins It's seen as a USB device by the Linux host but there seems to be a problem with the port passthru - Linux spurts:
hid-core.c usb_submit_urb(ctrl) failed
The APCtest program will do things but it's not reliable.
...Linux often spurts, but at least it's not as bad as what windows does...
hmmm
windows generally has more fun catathrophic failures ;p
Anyway, I would have thought you'd want your UPS monitoring on the host system so it can cleanly shut down all the guests and the shut itself down.
@MattJenkins Yep - I am going to fire up the daemon and see if it reliably polls "on battery" and "power restored" and then decide. I have the perl scripts ready to shut down the VMs - it's just whether I trigger them from Linux or the other thing.
As we're running ESXi there's not much underlying Linux to use
14:44
aha
Can someone give me a hand with this one?

A: Change NIC speed/duplex settings in script?

HyppyIt seems like this is a vendor-specific setting, as noted in a technet thread Here It notes that making a registry change to the NIC's key under HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\(GUID)\(INTNUM)\(Vendor-specific-registrykey) should be enough, but I think you should also add something i...

I did some digging, and found the registry key. Now I just need a refresher on how to disable/re-enable the NIC via command line.
talking out of my a** and off the top of my head... WMIC?
I would imagine it is done through netsh but for the life of me I can't find the command you need
@TheJourneymangeek and @MattJenkins I'm pretty sure both of those could do it. I just don't have the syntax handy.
netsh interface set interface <interface name> DISABLED
14:56
C:\>netsh interface set interface "Local Area Connection" DISABLE
one moment while i pick the brains of the interwebs
C:\>netsh interface set interface "Local Area Connection" ENABLE
I'm more interested in the WMIC command now...
14:57
NETSH was my first go-to, but it's nice to know things can be done differently.
WMIC does almost anything XD
@TheJourneymangeek Yeah. A colleague first suggested WMIC when I wanted to fix the 100 Mb/Full thing. Then, when we found out it's a Registry key, he said "Oh, it'll do that too.".

@studiohack We've got a similar discussion started over on IT Sec.
@BloodPhilia: I agree that we should close the obvious ones, and circumventing DRM is almost always illegal...So it seems more wrong to do that than to ask how to get around a Windows admin password - like there is more potential for abuse...IMO
yes, @Iszi? link?
@studiohack : there's a legitimate reason for that ;p

Q: Should we allow questions/answers that appear to include or request exploit code?

IsziI don't speak SQL myself, so I'm not sure if this is a good example, but here is the question that prompted this query: http://security.stackexchange.com/questions/1281/how-would-you-exploit-this-vulnerability-in-order-to-cause-max-damage/1303#1303 Asking for general conceptual how-tos is one t...

tho, i'd note questions on how to get around proxies are frowned on, and that's closer to drm cracking i guess
15:23
ah it is your question @Iszi ;) that's how you know about it
@studiohack Yeah, that helps.
It's probably not quite so much broadly applicable to SU, but I figured it might help.
yeah, thanks for linking, I'll star it
hopefully we'll hear something from Jeff on Meta.SU about it (and even your question as well @Iszi)
@TheJourneymangeek Maybe you could bump those (proxy questions) to IT Sec, and let us filter out the Black Hats.
@Iszi : hmm, its probably been asked, and answered already ;p
there's only 2 ways to get past a password on windows as far as i know
and the linux way is well documented
i vaguely remember a question on getting past bios passwords too
@TheJourneymangeek Is that including the legacy 9x "ESC" method?
15:29
lol
that's too easy to count
konboot and the NT password disk is what i'd use. there's also tools that guess the password, but takes too long ;p
besides, who still uses 9x?
Someone remind me how to string two commands into one command line in CMD?
(I used to be good at this stuff. Today I'm feeling dumb.)
@Iszi command1 & command2
@Sathya Bingo. Thanks.

@Iszi Thanks :D
ah, welcome @Iszi
@Sathya Heyo
@BloodPhilia: sooo true
@Linker3000 Lolol

@BloodPhilia LOVE THIS! so true :P
and hey @BloodPhilia :)
17:47
Hi everybody!
@Linker3000 That's my kind of pie chart right there
hey @Mokubai
Anyone bought a PC from HP lately?
@studiohack Heya, how's things?
not me, @Mokubai
Looks like the landing might have been a bit rough, but so well done:
things are good, thanks for asking @Mokubai
how about you?
17:52
I'd have thought that HP would have gotten out of the non-standard power-supply connector malarkey by now...
lol, looks like a kid's plastic tricycle @Mokubai
That's awesome!!!
LAWL!
It does at that, I'm amazed the wheels didn't fly sideways on landing @studiohack
Though I think he needs a new spine...
You can just watch it over and over and over and over................
It's mesmerising...
17:56
yes... yes it is...
Thank you for sharing this with us
yea I thought it would split right in half lol
I stared it...
I think that back-flip might have been overkill for the trike though.... Still AWESOME.
HOLY CRAP! That's a GIF!
That must have taken forever to make!
Nah, I think there's programs that'll turn your videos into gifs these days
heck, imagemagick probably does it...
"wheeeee.... thunk!..... wheeeeee...... thunk!" is the sound going through my head because of that.

Anyone else think this one looks like shopping advice?

Q: Looking for home networking hardware and software advice

phobos7Note: I originally wrote this up in a blog post. I've recently moved home and I now need to go to the trouble of sorting out my home network yet again. We had Virgin broadband in Hertford but you can't get Virgin in the street we've moved to so I've had to go with O2 Broadband. Normally I prefer...

It's semi shopping and semi not
actually, scratch that...it is a shopping rec and pretty localized... @Iszi, @MattJenkins
I'd personally respond with "Don't use wireless for media streaming, it sucks. Use something like HomePlug that gives faster communication. And as for the streaming, have you looked int MythTV?"
only I'd flesh it out more
19:22
@BloodPhilia Is LOLOL a recursive acronym?
I'm getting rep today!! :D
To understand recursion you must first understand recursion.

hi all
last night the configuration of my router didn't come out good. I was configuring it and I was still connected to the internet but when I write the SSID and the Paraphrase I couldn't connect anymore. I don't know why? :-(
could someone please help me?
I tried to do ipconfig but it says media disconnected
@tintincute: would you consider posting your questions on Super User so that the entire community can see and benefit?
It would make more sense to do that, because then more people can see and answer your questions, and get rep as well...
ok no problem
chat is fine for answering questions, but it's primary purpose is for users to communicate and relax in real time, not so much on questions, okay? thanks for understanding @tintincute :)
no problem
thanks for telling me..but i was advised by others that I can ask help here if needed...
20:17
you can @tintincute, just don't do it excessively...find a good balance :)
ok i already posted my question.
21:03
Good afternoon, everyone.
afternoon @MarkSzymanski
how are ya?
I'm doing great, thanks. You?
I'm good @MarkSzymanski :P
speaking of, are you on Twitter @MarkSzymanski?
No, I'm not @studiohack.
just wondering, I barely use it myself, have a hard time seeing the point @MarkSzymanski lol
21:07
Heh, yeah.
Hey, @studiohack. Just out of curiosity, what's your flag weight?
let me look it up @MarkSzymanski - I'll warn you, it is low because I'm a mod, I do things directly lol
290 - does that help?
Yeah, I was just curious. Mine is like 230 :P
ah, I see yours :)
21:09
Heh
@MarkSzymanski your flag weight will go up 10 points for every time you flag and it is valid...
there is a post about that somewhere...
Yep, I thought that's how it worked.
Can it go down?
I think so
I would flag a question at random just to see, but I don't want to get any mods angry :P
95
Q: What is flag weight?

CoolBeansFlag weight can be viewed in user profiles. What is flag weight? Who can view my flag weight? When can I view my own flag weight? What are the possible values of flag weight? What are the benefits of a high flag weight? Return to FAQ index

I'm right here, if you want to play with that, you can... :P but I wouldn't recommend it
21:14
Yeah, I won't :P
there's a badge for it! when you hit 500
you're about halfway there! @MarkSzymanski :D
Deputy it is called, silver
hmmm, maybe I'll flag more :P haha
21:16
Heh :P
Well, you, as a mod, could use flags to alert other mods of questions that you're not sure should be closed or not.
yeah, that's how we mods use them...any other way is pretty close to abuse...so that's why I don't flag much :)
21:45
hi again this is just a quick question, I am already in the set-up of my router and I would like to select the security options... which one should I select here: WPA2 PSK (AES), WPA PSK (TKIP) + WPA2 PSK (AES), WPA/WPA2 Enterprise
Either the first or the second should do the job well, just don't use WEP @tintincute
all of them will work, but some devices may not be compatible with the newer encryptions...
ok thanks :)
np @tintincute :)
22:14
LOL
see the revision history on that ^
@Mokubai lol
Ah, edit clash :)
Soz :)
Feel free to revert my version
oh, no problem, I just think it is interesting how we all converged and tried to salvage :P
I saw something fishy with the missing stuff, then when I went to edit saw the whole mess... my eyes hurt just thinking about it
anyway, sleep... catch you later
oh same here @Mokubai - it's a mess
have a good one @Mokubai :)
22:37
Bye, @Mokubai.
Whoa, late XD
faceplams
I wondered @MarkSzymanski :P
