but its a carry case, not a proper one. And the 'proper' case is quite shiny. Looks like it has enough space to mod a ribbon cable out if you wanted to too
@JourneymanGeek That is just kernel dependent I reckon.
The main thing is getting the right power adapter, apparently it is pretty finicky about 5v .7a - but I had one lying around
@Paul: and power adaptor
I have a 5V .7A, but apparently you need more power for some things
@JourneymanGeek Yeah, well I was using a wireless keyboard and I noticed the range was about a meter
So a wifi card might need a bit extra too
00:16
also, TV mode seems to be 800x600 - unless its the TV itself
00:32
@jokerdino it worked, thank you very much
now, to laugh and cry at how easy and hard this was
i am glad you got it working.
@JourneymanGeek What OS are you booting?
debian? :D
the stock debian
might upgrade to a newer version later
> The Stack Exchange network may be temporarily unavailable while we fail over to our Oregon data center due to Hurricane Sandy.
Waiting for it to go down.
00:38
@jokerdino: Ahh, the stuff I only read about in school
DR plans ;p
(granted, weather related disasters are uncommon here, as you'd know)
Disaster management.. not much scope I guess.
lol
its part of the larger plan
and its not just environmental
lets say your datacenter gets hit by lightning...
or catches fire
00:40
or gets invaded by martians
or zombie outbreak ~_~
oh, we're screwed if there's a zombie outbreak
mobilisation would be a pain
I'll just call in Alice.
prolly would have to get armour to pick up small groups of troops, quarantine everyone else
then start mopping up area by area
nuke 'em
00:42
too messy
cordon off an area, kill everything at street level thats undead, go door to door.
move on
amusingly, the british stratergy in the emergency against the communists would work perfectly there
more so since unlike communists, zombies arn't people.
lol
zombies don't have brain. So we might be a little safe.
BTW, is the chat going down too?
I guess we will know in a short while.
I seem to think chat already runs out of oregon
01:18
and.. main sites are down
Baltimore Gas & Electric live power outage information: currently 14% of customers without power
01:37
Hmm
Not being able to get to root-access was making me more uncomfortable than I expected :)
@allquixotic You're still online? O_o
I have a Samsung 830 256gb SSD, bought it a couple weeks ago. Two or three times now I've seen this thing where all of a sudden it'll get really slow, practically stop responding, while I'm using my computer. For example it just did it a few minutes ago - I was playing a game and a loading screen hung instead of blinking by like it normally does. Any idea why this might happen?
I'm in Windows 8 now but it was happening in 7 (just upgraded yesterday). Task manager is showing an average response time of 16,500 ms and write speed of 2 MB/s during a benchmark running via the official software... I shudder to think what this benchmark's results are going to be...
Hmm the benchmark just finished... Sequential read ~510 MB/s, random read ~62,000 IOPS. Sequential write is a little sliver of a bar, and random write doesn't even show up as a bar at all (on the bar graphs).
So apparently something about writes is entirely stopped
@r.tanner.f everything good here, power, water, :P
01:51
Aww what the hell, apparently the SSD just woke up as I went to run another test (a program called AS SSD) - now it's back to full speed...
hmm
could be sleep settings?
thats wierd though
especially since I was in the middle of a game so clearly the computer should not have thought I was idle or something
nope, "Turn off hard disk after" is set to never in my current power plan, and the SSD itself has no power management options in device manager
02:08
@allquixotic nice. not so bad yet?
@r.tanner.f it's pretty terrible to our south and west, i think it just missed my little cubbyhole just a little bit... kind of like threading a needle
it's been awful all around us but we still have power somehow
nice 60 mph gusts though
@allquixotic damn, crazy... you running on LTE or landline?
LTE.... you kidding? if we had landlines they'd be gone the second the first drop of rain fell
lol don't know what the infrastructure is like there. here our LTE would go down first.
our LTE is ultra resilient to weather... our landlines must be unshielded copper wire run about an inch under the sidewalk because i swear when we had DSL we'd lose internet if someone walked down the street
02:14
lol
all our cables are underground, yay
the word Verizon instills two simultaneous sensations in me
if you add "Wireless" after it, my heart fills with love
if you don't quickly add "Wireless", I'm ready to commit homicide
Verizon the landline telco... DIE
Verizon Wireless... ohhh yes, the only viable internet in the area
With SU down I have nothing to distract me from homework :(
@KronoS help me understand why aparapi crashes on Nvidia's OpenCL implementation :P
02:21
Did you turn it off and on again?
Is that the most commonly used phrase in this chatroom?
@Ricket no, "on Windows 8?" is the most commonly used phrase
@allquixotic But... it's practically the same as Windows 7...
only these few weeks ;p
yanno what's the worst thing? Seeing a question you want to close, just sitting there, taunting you.
with its beady little eyes, and utter unclosability
02:36
@journeymangeek that's why you should run for mod. :P
@KronoS: didn't help that the site was down ;p
ya, I'll run next election ;p
............
umm, apparently people in maryland are running their generators INSIDE. are people stupid?
carbon monoxide, hellooooooo
wow
02:56
@allquixotic There is nothing wrong with carbon monoxide, it is a left wing liberal conspiracy to give it a bad name.
03:12
wow, I'm closer to level 4 than I expected, need 6, 3-upvote posts
the 15 vote had been breached :D
lol
the 3 upvotes are the hard part
this is wierd. If I plug my raspberry pi to my laptop via ethernet, it works fine plugged into the TV, and not at all when it is in my room
2 winners for level 4 + 6 for lvl3. Yeah that chances of either are very slim, considering 4 have made it to level 4 & 13 to level 3
wait are there multiple prizes for each level?
nope
if you don't win lvl4, you get bumped to lvl3 & so on
03:21
so it's entirely possible that you win all levels & still end up with only a tshirt
since lvl2-4 winners are selected by lottery
and thank the kind soul, whoever put the last vote, for pushing me to level 3 ;D
lol
@Sathya:something that keeps getting pointed out ;p
would think if one of the level 4s dosen't win anything, he probably shouldn't be buying lottery tickets either
lol
@JourneymanGeek there is a good chance somebody at level 4 will NOT win
@ronalchn: at all?
@JourneymanGeek obviously a t-shirt, but yes, nothing else
03:32
there is, but the person has a chance in the other 2 lower levels
10 mins ago, by Sathya
so it's entirely possible that you win all levels & still end up with only a tshirt
yeah ;p
someone else pointed that out too ;p
evenin all
so who has 8?
I guess I'd be perfectly fine with the T shirt ;p
lieeeeeeeees
:P
03:33
ugh
am tempted to skip school today
off to work, back later.
@Sathya: I was the first to reach level 4. I have bragging rights ;p
anybody?
is too tied from cooking, washing up, removing dead roaches, and doing laundry
@JoeStavitsky Windows? Most people do in some form or another that frequent this room
03:34
@Paul, really, everyone has upgraded already?
@JoeStavitsky: running a eval copy on VHD until I get my new computer ;p
No, but people have been running with the developer and consumer previews for a while
@JourneymanGeek you only have 3 tiles, you need to be first to complete everything
@JourneymanGeek yeah, that message is pinned :P
@ronalchn hrm? He's got all 3
@JourneymanGeek, yea, don't have the hardware/time to justify that
03:36
@JoeStavitsky Can't really see any value in upgrading to Windows 8 on a desktop, or non-touch laptop really.
Altho, now I think about it I do have that craptop
tiles aren't related to level1-4 prizes @ron
@Paul, I got the impression that they seriously unsucked system restore and disk management
@Sathya I know, but I mean to get more chances at prizes in general
@Paul, also better performance metrics
03:38
@ronalchn Yeah - people will find different things valuable, and that will help them decide. The low cost to upgrade drops the barrier too. I was referring to myself - I haven't seen anything that would encourage me to upgrade.
03:51
@JoeStavitsky Heh my previous message was in reply to you not ron!
@Paul, i fugured :)
*figured
@Paul, but have you seen the disk management, recovery, and performance goodnexx?
@JoeStavitsky Not specifically I guess? I am always wary of MS disk management as beyond simple setups the partitions become difficult to access from linux (in dual boot), so I do all my disk management from the linux side. I haven't noticed any performance stuff - the W8 I have is a clean install so not really representative. And recovery? Windows never goes wrong so who needs it? :)
@Paul, o if u r doing dual boot then u should stay far far away from 8. It ownzors your mbr
@JoeStavitsky With Windows dual boot I use two disks - one for linux boot and one for Windows boot. So when I install I make the Windows disk primary, and install. It can do what it likes to mbr. Then I switch the grub disk back to primary and chain load Windows.
@Paul, thats not bad
@Paul, I'd just get annoyed to go in my bios that often
@Paul, that, and requires two separate os diske =P
03:58
Once this is set up, I don't need to go to the bios ever again
Unless I need to reinstall windows
@Paul, ah ok I misunderstood u
@Paul, not bad a-tall
@JoeStavitsky Yeah, well I have had two disks for a long time - I tend to have two always.
@Paul, I prefer raid 1 when I can get it :)
04:00
@JoeStavitsky But they will get grub signed, or a pre-grub loader signed, so that we can dual boot single disks with linux.
@Paul - my grub grokkage is insufficient to comprehend that
@JoeStavitsky Oh yeah, this is my desktop, so not all that critical in my setup, all of my files are on RAID6 on a different machine
@ronalchn the last few tiles arn't really worth the effort
@Paul, sw or hw raid?
@JourneymanGeek lol, you don't want to give away 50 rep
04:03
@JoeStavitsky Grub is just a boot loader, but with a secure UEFI bios, even grub won't be loaded without being signed. But if they sign grub, that stuffs up all the lilo or any other boot manager. So I think the idea is to get a pre-boot-loader-loader that all it does is load the boot loader, and get that signed. Then it will load your boot loader of choice.
@JoeStavitsky Software raid currently - the only time this is an issue is when I have to rebuild an array. This can take a while!
@Paul, I read about secure bios but havent used it yet
@Paul, how do I know if a mobo uses it - by the specs?
@JoeStavitsky Yeah I guess, I haven't seen one yet
@ronalchn: actually, I've been giving 50 rep away a month
@Paul, o its not here yet, good
I have a bounty I need to award once the waiting time is up
04:05
@Paul, it gave me hives just reading about it
I just haven't seen anything that I feel like giving a bounty to
@Paul, if I wanted to deal with that BS I'd buy an iturd
@JoeStavitsky: you can just turn it off according to microsoft's OEM 'rules' apparently
Ubuntu and fedora are getting signed bootloaders, FSF is building a shim
@JourneymanGeek, yea, I'll just bet you can
04:07
@JourneymanGeek, I'm more prepared to believe that they can than that I can.
@JoeStavitsky: It dosen't make sense for MS to totally lock down a system for power users
what they're probably trying to is prevent pre-bootloader attacks for piracy and malware
@JourneymanGeek, sure, not like Apple dominated the market that way
@JoeStavitsky: apple also has the whole 'we have a product which people easily recognise' thing
as I understand it, turning off secure boot is as simple as going into your bios/uefi config and changing one flag
@JourneymanGeek, Apple conned the userbase into believing that "it just works" by completely controlling the UX
@JourneymanGeek, I really hope so
@JoeStavitsky: and it sorta does
honestly, a good part of the fuss over secure boot is from the slightly rabid open source crowd
04:11
What sorta does what now?
@JourneymanGeek, well, the fuss on my part comes from my hatred of apple
it sorta just works ;p
@JourneymanGeek, and my fervent hope that microsoft doesnt become like them
My ipod was a lovely device until it failed, only reason I won't get another one is cause of the patent shennanigans going on
@JourneymanGeek, no. I've interacted with ipod and ipad, neither was stable or at all flexible
@Joe, Microsoft might be doing some evil stuff too
like locking Win8RT
04:12
lol, the old one
@ronalchn: most tablets are locked down anyhow
@ronalchn, no argument from me
@JourneymanGeek I hate walled gardens
@JoeStavitsky: my ipod classic worked perfectly, until the hard drive conked out ;p
@ronalchn, but apple bastardry atm is orders of magnitude greater
and its a unusual type for just that model
04:13
@JourneymanGeek, I have no interest whatsoever in installing itunes
nonetheless, no one will be holding a gun to your head and making you run windows 8
@JoeStavitsky: not necessary for the classic
@JourneymanGeek, shrug thats not even 10% of their share atm
and i'd note while OS X was 'locked' to their hardware, getting around it was trivial
(and they were a good FOSS citizen for many years, webkit for example)
@JourneymanGeek, os is *nix with a fresh coat of paint, but honestly I didnt really hate apple till the Icrap era
@ronalchn, so what you were talking about, is that the browser thing?
@JoeStavitsky: pre android, I don't think anyone did an open source embedded device
04:17
@ronalchn, ie locking win8
so, no biggie
@JoeStavitsky: funny thing is, there's a way around that default metro browser thing
@JourneymanGeek, are you seriously telling me that iCrap is opensource?
I have chrome dev as mine
@JoeStavitsky: I'm saying that they arn't doing anything 90% of companies in the industry did
@JoeStavitsky I meant any instance of it, including Apple controlling the apps that run on it
with Windows RT, "Unlike other Windows operating systems, it will only be able to run software that has been certified by Microsoft and placed in the Windows Store. " -Wikipedia
where they get a 15% cut of sales
@ronalchn: well, thats cause they don't seem to allow non office desktop apps on it
(which is odd, I'd love to see things like dosbox on it. perfect retrogaming system)
04:20
@JourneymanGeek that reasoning just means they are locking it
@JourneymanGeek, So, name one other company that disavows responsibility for stuff sold in their store and refuses refunds?
@ronalchn, but that's only on arm chipset, right?
@JoeStavitsky: I believe amazon deleted someone's account
@JoeStavitsky: yup
no refund, no access to old books
@JourneymanGeek: but that was an error
I'm quite sure there's something in the end user contract that lets them do that
@JourneymanGeek, official apple policy = no refunds, no responsibility on anything sold in the store
brb
04:22
@JoeStavitsky: and? It makes sense for them, and if you disagree... well, go somewhere else ;p
@JourneymanGeek, sure, which is what I did :)
@JourneymanGeek having a choice not to participate, doesn't make it ethical
(which is why I have an android phone)
It's just that crap product dominating the market is offensive to Adam Smith :)
@ronalchn: ethics is relative
04:24
The philosophy! It burns!
in this case they're basically protecting themselves by denying refunds by default
they can always choose to give a refund as a goodwill guesture
is gonna nap. I'm too sick to go to school, so I shouldn't be hanging around chatting ;p
@JourneymanGeek ethics is still more universal than other cultural differences
@JourneymanGeek, yea sure then they will get their asses sued by everyone who did not get a refund

Q: Can I upgrade an OEM version of Windows XP to Windows 8, then transfer it to another computer?

JustinI have 2 computers, one with Win7 and one with WinXP OEM. I'm thinking of upgrading the WinXP OEM edition to Win8 Pro and transfer it to the computer with Win7, and then transferring the Win7 copy over to the (formerly) WinXP one. Is this possible?

Which answer is correct? I think the wrong answer is first.
Bob
Bob
@JourneymanGeek was it exactly 5 of them? :P
@jokerdino perfect timing, considering they just tested that...
Again?
It was down before?
05:16
@GeorgeEdison yes (it seems to be back up though)
Anyone care to translate this to english? Ingress and Egress of vehicles and persons is prohibited and/or subject to the following regulations: Persons and vehicles shall stay away from areas of flooded roadways, downed trees and power lines.
What does that mean?
you arn't allowed to go in our out in a vehicle, or yourself from that area
and you need to stay the hell away from flooded roads yada yada
ingress = enter egress= exit
@JourneymanGeek Ingress and egress of vehicles means to enter or exit a vehicle. Same goes for people. So no getting in or out of cars or other people.
lol
I think the mean enterance of exit of a vehicle from a place
If you are pregnant, your newborn child can be subject to fines
05:29
makes perfect sense.
I notice how they refer to vehicles in their own right. I suspect this is to make Googles self-driving cars subject to the same rules as us humans.
It is nice to see this, because one of my chief concerns about the imminant self-aware machines is that they will be treated differently to the rest of us
wut?

@Capt.Nemo yes
07:21
Guys, what exactly is "God mode" in Windows?
@HenningKlevjer I believe its a folder filled with shortcuts that are useful for developers and power users/admins
@HenningKlevjer all settings in one place
Alright, thanks!
Or you know, try it ;P
I obviously should ;)
07:24
@IvoFlipse such a radical move there
@soandos Aint it just a folder?
I was joking, but its not really a folder
its just all settings (the folder is in fact empty)
Wow activity on the site seems way up since the contest has picked up its pace

@Sathya: only way to get a t shirt now is to be a mod, and to post 3 blogs right?
@JourneymanGeek not too sure about the latter..
with the blog what we used to do was send a promo code for Stack Exchange store discounting the tshirt cost
now that the Stack Exchange store is no more..
