@sidran32 I wish them the best of luck :)
@OliverSalzburg As do I :P
lol china
its still 20-25% IE6
I know :p
UK is at 0.9% but we're still blue :'(
lol
Hi All, I have a dell laptop purchased in March 2011, Dell warranty got expired in March 2012. Now from last 1 week my Laptop is making noise. I called to dell and they said that i will have to extend my warranty for another year which will take 9000 INR ( $167). Should I extend the warranty?
16:02
@JaredTritsch I deliberately post hidden anti-china propaganda on all our websites to keep them out of our analytics ;)
@OliverSalzburg lol
@Ji
@JitendraVyas You should post more to Windows8
@JitendraVyas Depends on the noise
@JitendraVyas have you ever cleaned it?
Dell guy told me that it's because of HDD
cleaned how? laptop?
16:05
dell guys have no idea what the hell they are talking about
@JitendraVyas open it and check the dust
@JaredTritsch Sounds like one of dells scams
I never opened my laptop. Will it void warrantly if i open it?
@JitendraVyas Most definitely
Usually though, modern laptops let you remove the HDD without opening the entire laptop up
Hi, guys. How can I get Windows Action Center's little flag in the system tray to stop saying "Backup In Progress" on Windows 8? It's driving me nuts. I disabled the Windows Backup service completely and turned off File Recovery. Nothing that I can tell is using any disk I/O whatsoever. It's just a visual cue that seems totally wrong considering my disk is only using about 50 KB/s of sporadic writes.
16:06
There'll be a door that you can unscrew under the laptop.
Also, this isn't for me; this is for my crazy dad who thinks it's "doing a backup"
I don't know if it actually voids it
take a look at the link
@allquixotic Sounds like your crazy dad needs to post that as a question and tag it Windows 8 =D
@r.tanner.f I can post it if needed
16:07
@allquixotic Post it and get points for the Win8 Challenge :P
Besides maybe disabling the action center though I can't think of much...
This 6 point limit feels like chains
Dell guy was on phone call with me and he told me to check condition of HDD using a tool on boot. and that tool shows and error for HDD. I gave error number to dell guy and hel told that this error number mean my hdd is going to die soon and i should take backup my data
Bob
Bob
@allquixotic would you mind removing the action centre icon altogether?
@JitendraVyas Backup is always good
16:08
@misha there is a 6 QUESTION limit, but you and answer as many as you want in a day.
How can I ensure that my HDD has problem or not?
I got tier 2 and 3 in one day that way.
@Bob Personally? I don't give a flying cheese monkey if it says "Diarrhea in progress", as long as it's only a visual glitch and not actually doing anything (which I can clearly tell it's not from task manager)
I'm not sure if my dad would be ok with the action center icon entirely disappearing though
Bob
Bob
@allquixotic yea, easy enough then
he probably wants it to say "No alerts"
he's a VERY visual user
16:09
@JitendraVyas You can run scandisk on it if you can get into Windows.
whenever he has a firewall or a virus scanner or whatever, he has to see the message saying the right thing
It will check for any errors
he doesn't rely on (or really, believe) things showing disk I/O or whatever as evidence of activity
he doesn't think linux has a firewall because he's never seen a colorful, fancy GUI for one like McAfee has
Bob
Bob
write a fake program using the Action Centre icon? :P
@sidran32 OK
16:10
that's the kind of clueless user we're talking about
@Bob great idea!
Bob
Bob
@allquixotic problem is it'll mask any real problems

A: How to boot to Windows 7 from Windows 8 boot menu without a restart?

sidran32I ran into this a while ago. Basically what happens is the Windows 8 bootloader chains the Windows 7 bootloader after you select it. But because of how Windows 8 handles booting (by loading the OS before showing the menu), it means the computer has to reboot. The solution is basically to have th...

@sidran32 Windows 8 loads the OS first? o.O
still doesn't explain my situation :P
@Bob More or less, yeah.

sometimes it starts the Win7 bootloader first, sometimes the Win8 one

oh yea
when's the storm hitting?
@Bob it's about 60% here. we're being buffeted by the outer bands. Unfortunately they said it picked up strength to 85 mph winds and it's also landing tonight about 20 miles south of where they originally predicted
@sidran32 I ran scandisk in windows and after scanning "Windows successfully scanned the drive. No errors were found."
it landing south + having higher winds means the situation will be significantly more grim for my area
because we'll be closer to the eye
Bob
Bob
:(
you sure you don't wanna evacuate?
we're going to tough it out... but can you believe that about 40% of the people where I work came to work today?!?!
Bob
Bob
16:18
just drive out for a couple of days?
@JitendraVyas Well, that means nothing bad happened yet. I don't know if a Dell utility can let you do a SMART test, but I'd just take this opportunity to back everything up anyway and be ready to replace the drive, if you don't want to do it just yet.
the office manager said "use your best judgment" and 40% of the people ... did so... and concluded that it would be ok to go to work when the commute home will probably involve 70 MILE PER HOUR WINDS
(that's 120 kph)
Bob

please report in ASAP afterwards :P
my boss didn't ASK me to report, but said that I can use my best judgment to decide if I want to report in
Bob
Bob
@allquixotic I can see that flipping cars...
16:19
@sidran32 I'm going to check my hdd with dell's tool
@JitendraVyas Ok
My guess is what reported the error was a SMART test.

@Bob based on my judgment of wind speed, we are already seeing 40 mph (64 kph) winds and the eye is still several hundred miles away from us

:S
I was scared of tree branches falling the only time I've ever seen winds that fast... can't imagine a hurricane :(
we aren't in any real danger of large trees falling on us because we aren't in proximity of them
unless we drive on roads, which have trees right next to them.... all of our roads do
@sidran32 One more thing I noticed that. Where air comes out from laptop via fan. Pressure of air is low compare to past as i feel.

because its probably ftpes
can i nmap it?

FTP, you say?
@sidran32 you back?
16:32
@Bob it's probably a gopher server
Bob
Bob
Try ftp://147.32.97.62:5000, not http://147.32.97.62:5000
the http one redirects
oh wait

@HackToHell Return the favor? =D superuser.com/a/494871/146694 this is so underloved :(

@allquixotic he wanted 5000, not 5001
5000 is UPNP
# nmap 147.32.97.62 -p 5000

Starting Nmap 6.00 ( http://nmap.org ) at 2012-10-29 12:33 EDT

Bob
Bob
16:34
:\
so it's a firewall that does UPNP to allow NAT traversal to an underlying FTP server i guess
assuming that's true, you'll need an FTP server capable of UPNP traversal
so why is my winscp client not workin?
;O)
SCP?!
you said **F**TP!
the fu?
markdown
yes, but i can choose if i want SCP, FTP , SFTP
Bob
Bob
16:35
WinSCP does SFTP too
in winscp client
exactly
but i can't connect anyway
Bob
Bob
is it FTP or SFTP?
SFTP on 5000 is timing out
i don't know
probably ftp
SFTP on 5001 is timing out
AH
it's FTP with explicit TLS (FTPES)
Status: Connecting to 147.32.97.62:5000...
Status: Connection established, waiting for welcome message...
it still times out, but the fact that it establishes a connection tells me that it's something over SSL
so that means that which client should i use?
the SSL handshake is completing successfully
but whatever service is wrapped in it, is failing
16:38
i can connect via browser.... or map it as a network disk
but i want something like total commander
so that it's quicker sending and receiving files from / to FTP server
ಠ_ಠ
Bob
Bob
@allquixotic how do you know?
"FTP" to "SCP" to "network disk" (Samba)
what protocol do you want????
Bob
Bob
xD
@Bob it may not be FTPES, but it's something over SSL, because I just got asked to accept its SSL certificate.
/me installs wireshark
16:41
is the user manual of that Synology DiskStation...
;o)))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))0
@EinsteinsGrandson is this your equipment? can I hack it?
please don't
i will get capital punishment if you do
i am the person who is responsible for that FTP server
@EinsteinsGrandson can I just try to determine what protocols it's using, without hacking it?
;o)
yes you can
I'm ethical so I'll do as you ask :3
16:46
/me hands allquixotic a white hat
WHAT IN THE NINE HELLS?!?!?!?
it just sent me an IPA packet (GSM over IP)!
this server is batshit insane!
Bob
Bob
LOL
Bob
Bob
sure it's not some proprietary protocol?
it must be, for sure
Bob
Bob
16:48
how the heck does it work with SMB/CIFS?
it probably has some port knocking protocol where you have to connect to ports 5000 through 5007 using IPX and attempt to start a game of Warcraft 2, then when that fails, wait 37.3 seconds and connect to port 12 over UDP...
nmap is like "wtf is this"
wireshark is like "invalid packet received, TCP exception raised"
Bob
Bob
your kernel/network stack will be like "ok, I quit - reboot"
the furthest I get is with FTP over Implicit TLS on port 5001
TCP port 5000 is used for UPnP
.................
16:52
i think?
@EinsteinsGrandson, you are a silly little friend :-)
Connect to it on port 21 (the default FTP port, none the less) over plain FTP
It works
Back
You just need your username/password
I tried connecting as anonymous, and my access was denied, by a legitimate FTP server on the other end
no freakin' clue why you're trying to get me to connect over 5000
@JitendraVyas That might indicate that you need to clean out dust from the machine. To do that effectively, you will have to open the laptop up.
just connect on port 21!

set up regular FTP on the default port and go
@sidran32 I also checked my HDD with dell tool and it gave error "targeted read failed"
@allquixotic trololololol
@r.tanner.f exactly
@JitendraVyas Pull out the HDD (if it's easily accessible) and see if the whine continues?
Bob
Bob
16:55
@sidran32 it was fun seeing this in the middle of the FTP discussion
@JitendraVyas That does mean you've got some bad sectors on the drive. That can indicate that it's starting to fail. So, as was suggested before, back up :)
If it's just the HDD, then skip the warranty and use that $160 to get a nice new HDD :P
Yup. :P
@sidran32 @r.tanner.f but how can i be sure that problem is only HDD
@JitendraVyas Occam's Razor?
16:57
@JitendraVyas A problem like this is usually pretty simply a failing hard drive. It's relatively common.
@sidran32 And the noise is also because of HDD?
What was the noise? I didn't see that.
If you yank the HDD and the noise stops, I'm gonna put all my money down on bad HDD.
It's also a fairly common problem.
But yeah, the noise could be caused by the failing HDD, too. Usually the culprit is one of the moving parts, and in a laptop, that's typically either the HDD or the fans, and if your HDD is failing, that's a good indicator that it's coming from that too.
But after replacing the HDD (which needs to happen anyway), if you still hear the noise, then you can start worrying about figuring out what else it could be.
@sidran32 @r.tanner.f this hdd is inside my laptop newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822148374
17:02
@JitendraVyas You should be able to replace it with any 2.5" SATA HDD or SSD. It's a standardized part, now.
I've seen several powerboards in laptops make whine noises
just before failures
hometime anywyaas cya o/
@HaydnWVN Well, like I said, it probably is a moving part. If, after replacing the HDD, it still makes noise, we can worry about what else it could be :P
Now I'm off to lunch. Be back in a bit
I just checked SSD is very costly. even 64 gb SSD is around $100
holy crap... you guys can watch that page and divide the number of customers by the number out to determine the probability that I'm affected

Q: How do I change the image of the Windows Store tile?

RootI saw this post : How do I change the tile image of a Modern UI application? but it didn't contain any method to change the image of the Windows Store tile. Can anyone please tell me how can I do that?

Brilliance!
17:11
@JaredTritsch Nice, tho I can't see the point in that screenshot lol
the screenshot shows a blue Store icon.
the default is lime green
Ohhh so it is lol, could have made it a bit more obvious I guess lol
There's the cost of your warranty
or a bit more conservative on the price... newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820227706
yeah its not the best of screenshots for sure, but its still a brilliant find.
Side note: This method is how Winterboard works in Changing the look and feel of iOS
@r.tanner.f I just checked again cost of 1 year warranty of Dell is $185
17:18
@JitendraVyas with $185 you can get a bomb diggity SSD
That's a lot of money for 1 year :|
@r.tanner.f @sidran32 and another problem is I have windows key but don't have DVD for it.
@JitendraVyas version?
Windows 7 Home premium
I read on internet the retail and OEM versions are different
17:20
@r.tanner.f I need to find OEM version. my key will not work with retail dvds
allquixotic , thank you
;o))))))))))00
but why is there :5000 then?
@JitendraVyas Do you have a recovery partition?
also Dell will send you the DVD
@EinsteinsGrandson that's for UPNP, which is basically a firewall punching service or something like that, I don't really know
but it's listening on port 5000 for a UPNP compatible device/client to "hit" it and open up a port :P
it's rather insecure
@r.tanner.f I got this mail from dell

Dear Jitendra,

Once you have purchased the warranty and if any other part let’s say if the HDD needs to be replaced in that case you will have to pay no extra money as you have just purchased the warranty.

Excluding the battery every hardware part are covered under warranty.
17:23
then it's a problem of synology - the company that makes the website
not me
yeah
as long as you can download from FTP port 21 you should be ok
Contextual advertising doing well on the Sky News app

Bob
Bob
@allquixotic do you have a bit of time/are willing to help? :P
I'm trying to track down a couple of settings/do a few basic things that just won't work
@sidran32 i got this mail from Dell when i asked will i have to pay extra for hdd or it's included in warranty cost chat.stackexchange.com/transcript/message/6679786#6679786
@JitendraVyas If you can get the HDD for free under warranty, I'd go for it!
Free stuff is a good thing :P
@Bob my boss is asking me to work remotely
@sidran32 but cost of warranty is $185 for one year
17:38
I can spare about half an hour of time but my latency will be high (doing other stuff at the same time)
Bob
Bob
ah - any help at all is appreciated, but don't let me distract you from your work!
one thing i'd suggest is to make sure the log level is maxed out and look at the log files to see how it's parsing the configuration directives and which files it's reading from
@JitendraVyas Oh, you don't have the warranty right now? If it's cheaper to get a new HDD and you don't think you'll need the warranty for anything else, I'd skip buying an extra one.
I rarely find reason to purchase an extended warranty.
yes i don't have warranty now. but if i buy warranty for one year in $185 Dell will replace hdd at my home.
@JitendraVyas Well, it's your call if you feel it's worth the $185 to buy the warranty or if you'd rather just buy your own HDD and install it yourself.
17:41
Alright, Windows 8 blog post done. That page is really getting way too much images... :D

Q: Is there a way to enable "god mode" in Windows 8, like you could in Windows 7?

Q: Windows 8 installer: Something Happened

mcandreMy school provides Windows 8 through MSDN. My system specs seem to fit the minimum system requirements for Windows 8. I ran the Windows 8 Upgrade Assistant, and it seems to indicate that my computer is compatible with Windows 8 (Screenshots). When I run the Windows 8 installer, it says: What ...

most useful error screen ever
@allquixotic What does that do? O_o
@r.tanner.f Have you not heard of "God mode"? It's a real thing.
(seriously)
17:43
@sidran32 yes it my call. i will have to decide. But i'm curious to know what was the reason of HDD bad sectors? can it happen again with new HDD? how can i prevent it?
@JitendraVyas try not putting magnets near your computer or agitating it physically
@sidran32 It's a cheap gimmick :|
also make sure to put a bib around it when feeding it
@JitendraVyas The best way to prevent it is to not let the drive/laptop get dropped or banged around in general, especially when turned on. Other than that, it's more or less something that happens over time as drives age. Though it can happen quickly if there's a defect in the drive.
in reality NO there is NO way to prevent bad sectors
17:44
@r.tanner.f Some people like it.
I never did it, but some prefer it.
I find the question to be legitimate.
I actually like godmode, I didn't know about it before
@JitendraVyas For instance, I had an external USB hard drive that I accidentally knocked off a shelf while it was switched on. I instantly lost about half my storage space when it did that (and I even tried catching it to break the fall). Though luckily for me, I only lost free space, so I could pull my data off it.
17:58
@sidran32 @r.tanner.f Thanks very much for your help. I think I should go for warranty.
@JitendraVyas You're welcome. Good luck.
