03:06
@avirk Where did you get that?
03:16
@OliverSalzburg out of curiosity, what percentage of questions on the close vote part of /review leave the queue without being closed?

2 hours later…
05:06
facepalm
Some people need a hobby
and wank too.
lol
If you have such bad social skills that even miss right hand says no.... You might amuse yourself trolling websites!
hah
05:25
... Is it just me, or do the chat rooms seem to really die down during the evening (+7 GMT)?
cricket chirp
05:41
They do seem to
This period seems quieter than usual tho
Hmm
Questions about doing things that violate an EULA... Off topic? Flag for removal? Or just monitor?
depends. Flagging wouldn't be a bad idea
I assume you mean the PS/VM question?
Yup
But none of the flag reasons really match it... I guess just leave a note
actually, his idea is utterly fricking crazy
I agree
But instead of telling him that...
05:44
lol, summer of love and all.
... Ummm, ironic you may say that
lol. The SF guys have been bitching about it a fair bit. Apparently we need to be nice to new users ;)
But they aren't nice to me :(
Remember the phrase... Let me find the meme...
05:46
I try to fit in, and earn folk's respect ;p
and not care if people are nice to me ;p
I do try being nice, showing research when possible, but most people are still... Well, mean... I was going to call them something but don't want a 5 minute ban
shifty eyes
lol
'and not care if people are nice to me ;p'
But I'm a nerd, everyone is supposed to like me
:p
05:49
lol
I know what you're saying though
Just makes it hard to ask for help on the other sites
Well, with SF, the scope is the tricky thing
I hardly ask there, since I'm not really a professional sysadmin ;p
StackOverflow was good for my PHP/MySQL question, but still some arrogant comments got through before I knew to flag them
lol
developers
Sometimes I think that the quirks of each sort of computer geek is almost as interesting as computers itself ;p
There's a guy on the python course who has pissed off a lot of people by going on and on about how C is better
... I know PHP, MySQL, Visual Basic and QBasic...
Lol
06:01
thing is, different languages are better for different things ;p
and well, he's being insufferable ;p
That's what my boss tells me, and I agree
But because I don't code in the "better" languages, I stick to waht I know
lol
I need to learn a language, python seems easiest
and my dad's doing it too ;p
I wouldn't mind learning C or a variation of it, or Ruby
Problem is, I don't ahve time to apply it to a project
lol
right now doing networks and python. I want to plot out, and work on a small project, then see
I don't see me doing anything that needs C anytime soon
I'll leave that sorta thing to devs ;p
I got work 6 days a week, cadets 3 nights a week, and my son 4 or 5 nights/days a week
06:17
lol. Spending about 2 hours a week on python, 3 hours on networking, about 4-5 hours a week each on my two school modules
(and mostly so I'm more employable. comp forensics is an unusual field, but if i can back that up with solid knowledge of sysadminish stuff...)
... I would LOVE to be in computer forensics!
They don't offer courses like that here though, I'd have to go to teh big city down south
Ya, but only 2 of the modules are really forensics centric
One was desktop based, the other involved mssql databases
good fun, and I'm passing so far ;p
What is your goal when done?
06:35
Generically? Work with computers, prolly be a sysadmin
Forensics itself, too small a field, and unless you're a cop, not worth specialising in
Seems odd you'd need to learn forensices
but those skills mean I'd be better at working out whats happening
Hmm
Need to? No
but I used to do computer security, and the skills and mindset are useful
Elective?
no, my major is computer forensics, information security and IT management
Basically its sysadmin 'soft' skills
Ahhh ok
Where are you studying?
06:38
SMA - the last school on that list ;p
actually they changed their name. AGAIN, from SMA Institute to SMA Institute of higher education to SMF Institute of higher education
Ahhh, didn't know you were Australian
nope
Singaporean
the school is australian, but they have a bunch of affliate campuses elsewhere
Oh OK
... I've been out of Canada twice, and that was to the states and Cuba...
You live a long ways away lol
ya
lol
I was in UK for a bit
I've been to australia, and india.
love travelling, but parents don't ;p
I don't blame them :P
06:47
(part of the reason for the journeyman part of the name really, I realise I've been in a few places, and learnt stuff from everywhere. ;p)
I'd love to travel to many other countries, but being raised in Canada, I require certain... features
both online and offline places
lol. cold?
I can deal with cold
proper toilets?
I've spent a weekend at -50c temperatures
Toilets
06:47
You get less picky when you need to dig your own.
..And that's pretty much it
I've done my survival and camping, I'm only up for luxury now
lol, was in the military 2 years. failed basic 3 times, so spent a fair chunk of time outdoors
and ya, I can adapt
Oh wow
You've done a lot
the ONLY thing I need it a flat surface to sleep on
lol, its compulsary here
I used to be like that
But I also got a bad back after a car accident
Compulsary??
That wouldn't fly here...
How long do you need to do it for?
06:53
2 1/2 years total
Need to go back once a year as a reservist as well
Good time to catch up on reading ;)
O.O
I donno if I could do it
But it's getting quite late here, I'm going to put the laptop down and go to sleep
lol. I failed basic 3 times. I obviously was not very good at it ;p
07:12
So, I've heard that SSDs live longer if you don't use full capacity all the time. Is that true?
well, SSDs have a limited write cycle, so it might make sense
that said, modern SSDs have pretty impressive lifespans
Well, I just got a new computer, and it came with an OCZ Agility SSD harddrive, and I'm looking at ways to ensure maximum lifespan. I've read that it does load balancing, which is why it should last longer when you don't use full capacity.
well, its a little trickier than that
I wouldn't use it for short term data tho
going dual drive?
Right now it's the only one. I have some regular drives in the old computer that's going into this one.
Ideally, keep boot and most programmes on the SSD for speed
07:17
I was thinking the SSD should just hold the OS and other programs, and then games and file downloads on the others.
keep stuff that gets written and deleted a lot (like downloads) on a old school drive
ya
Easy way to do that is with symlinks
Never used that before.
its newish on windows - only really worked in windows 7 or better I think, basically its like hardlinks - you can simply link two directories together. As far as windows is concerned, the directory can be on one drive, when its sitting on another drive
frigging awesome
That's nice.
Removes the need to remember which drive holds which files.
07:27
It's interesting though. It's the first time in over 10 years I've bought a preassembled computer.
lol
I just can't see myself doing that with a desktop
The reason I did it was because I could get this kinda of all-cover-insurance on it. Which basically means, in 3-4 years, I'll be pouring soda all over it, and they'll give me a brand new computer.
lol
I guess thats a reason
07:59
@Luke Doing things violating the EULA… this is nothing we can enforce as moderators. We're not the ones who can decide whether something is illegal or not. In this case, the answers clearly explain that it's not a nice thing to do, so I guess it's okay to leave the question as-is.
Bob
Bob
08:34
@William'MindWorX'Mariager The files are still actually stored on one drive, though, so space will be taken up on that drive. They're just accessible under another folder name, potentially in the other drive.

Q: Where may I get the EDX platform, the LMS open source project?

Ramón GironaI have just found a query on the edx platform in which I am interested, being a significant piece of Learning Management System open source. I assume superuser platform cares about computer software, and therefore I don't see the question irrelevant. Besides I would like to know why a question i...

"I know its off topic since I want to know why this question is closed"
09:05
@JourneymanGeek did they ask this before? can't seem to find it
This is why I am confused ;p
1
Q: Where can I download edx opensource learning platform? What other learning platforms are opensource?

clawsFrom wikipedia's EdX page: The "learning platform" will be developed as open source software Did they opensource it yet? I've been searching for it but couldn't find it. I can't find any updates on that too. Are there any such opensource learning platforms (other than khanacademy)?

maybe he means this one
yeah gonna close as a dupe of that
ya
er no, actually
move it to meta
then I can post the second part as an answer ;p
too late, cba
:P
boo. I will throw a hissyfit and go cry in my room now ;p
09:09
hm, why not complain about the trigger happy mod regime instead?
@ivoflipse What do you think about this old one? superuser.com/questions/13620 :P
@slhck What's the problem with it? :P
@slhck: I'm not used to complaining ;p
I just wanted to know if I could throw even more money at the wall to see what sticks
Or were you referring to the answer?
09:12
bit of both
@JourneymanGeek exactly, haha
I think that's one of those 'historical' questions
Yeah, I just saw.. 2009.. dual core.. wait?
What's wrong with it? That it asks if something is possible?
It was perfectly in scope before scopes were narrowed down
09:13
@slhck Not dual core, dual processor
Yeah that's what I just saw
There was actually a model on the model on the market, but not really meant for desktop processors
Plus, I don't think Windows 8 would really make use of it :P
still not really common
er, unless there's skulltrail boards that do that
Well those just got launched back then, but probably the performance gain was minimal, so they stopped making them
@slhck restrain me from not deleting it now
09:17
@Sathya Go for it :P
Wait, what are we talking about?
Did you contact Apple yet?
@Sathya We could actually delete both now.. the OP knows now
@IvoFlipse no, yet to
I just noticed.. don't you have to have x rep to post on meta? @JourneymanGeek
@IvoFlipse the question @JourneymanGeek pointed
@slhck 5
Apparently my new hardware is already going to be delivered this afternoon :D
09:20
sweet
I need to pick mine up at some point ;p
I FINALLY have money but no time ;p
Which means I'll probably have to break my computer to install the parts
Pray that I can run two GPU's simultaneously
@soandos I'm afraid we don't have the stats on this, only the site developers do. Maybe they'll answer here at some point: meta.stackoverflow.com/questions/142037/…
@IvoFlipse nice
@IvoFlipse Congrats! :)
Yeah I bit the bullet and just bought it
Too bad I'll have to wait with buying Windows 8
unless I can get a key somewhere beforehand
09:24
@soandos So would I, but I don't access to that data :(
Yay, I've caught a help vampire.
Those where you have to suck every last bit of blood information out of them yourself.
lol
just hangs out and absorbs knowledge by osmosis ;p
haha
oh dear.. we got our cats some grass, the one you grow yourself.
turns out you shouldn't keep it too moist
it became a little… gross after a while
I even had to throw away my trash bin because it smelled so bad, haha
09:40
Keep it damp ;)
Well, it got moldy, so…
Yeah, happened to me as well :P
I even had a nice back-and-forth with Gimpet about their cat grass
But it was funny watching it grow.. took a timelapse video of it
They have a product called Hy-Gras that's supposed to work without watering
And it does
Well you water it once, and the water is stored in some kind of gel
ah, sounds nice
09:42
water absorbing gel? pretty common
cool stuff
But the gel would expand too much and push some of the cork/earth-like stuff out of the container
(though for proper geek cred, build an automatic watering machine that detects surface moisture ;p)
So I made several pictures of the process and wrote up a proper report :D
haha awesome
In return I got goodies :D
09:44
yay ;p
But I have to put in new seeds myself... Maybe I should do that today
Cats get pretty crazy when they don't get their "drugs"

Q: Does email services send senders IP?

user121032If I'm going to receive/send email through Gmail/Hotmail/Yahoo would I be able to see the IP of the sender? I know there's nothing to do with the IP but would it give away the location from where I'm sending emails? Just curious if such email providers send this information.

One migrate vote :\
I get the feeling it'll be (incorrectly?) migrated soon...
10:35
Let's watch :D
@Bob I have no clue who Samsung hires for translations, but they need to switch
I was playing with my girlfriends Galaxy Tab, which runs a German Samsung Android abomination.
They translated "On battery for X days and Y minutes" to "Remaining battery life X days and Y minutes"
Bob
Bob
One of the largest (multinational) companies in the world... can't translate/write a major part of their site in one of the most common languages in the world. facepalm
Like, the "low battery" alarm was going off. I go into the "battery use" menu and it tells me "remaining life 5 days"
Oh really? You're on 5% battery and you'll do 5 more days? And every time I refresh the display the battery life increases...
Bob
Bob
@OliverSalzburg "remaining life 5 days", in English, isn't too bad... maybe add a colon..
The estimation needs fixing, though :P
10:38
@Bob I mean they changed the meaning around in the translation
Bob
Bob
Ahhh... ok, that's just a fail.
There's more, but that's the one I saw yesterday :P

Why the hell is the Kies installer, for a clean installation, installing hotfixes?
A whole lot of them too...
Not a fan of Kies :\
Bob
Bob
An OTA update just failed, I don't have much choice (if I want that update).
Wait, why do I want that update anyway? :\
10:42
The only time Kies worked for me was shortly after I took my first Samsung phone out of the box. Everytime after when I tried it, it never connected with the phone :(
Bob
Bob
I can't even install it.
@Bob I guess that's worse :D
Bob
Bob
It's been on Installing HotFix..., with the bar restarting whenever it reaches the end, for about 10 minutes.
so it looks.. not too sure if this is some IT experiment gone wrong or what :\
ok looks like I'm back

Bob
I get the feeling it's not really doing anything. Come on Samsung, who the hell designs the crap you call software?
10:45
Humm they just said on the radio that, according to new statistics produced by the German government, Germany has the lowest birth rate world wide. :(
This article includes two versions of the list of countries by crude birth rate. Crude birth rate refers to the number of births over a given period divided by the person-years lived by the population over that period. It is expressed as number of births per 1,000 population. The first list is based on the United Nations Population Division's quinquennial estimates and projections. Figures are for the period 2010-2015 using the medium assumption. The second list is based on World Bank Data for the year 2010. The third list is based on CIA World Factbook estimates for year 2012. Depe...
70% of all households are without kids O__O
...and only Japan has more elderly people
We need to import some kids...
11:08
lol
@OliverSalzburg: you need to produce more!
Least thats what my government is trying to do
@JourneymanGeek That is seriously concerning
to the point where there's a office inside the government trying to get people to hook up
We already have a pension/retirement problem. The fact that people aren't "multiplying" isn't helping
The Social Development Network (SDN), formerly known as "Social Development Unit" (SDU), is a governmental body under the Ministry of Community Development, Youth and Sports of Singapore, which works closely with the community and commercial sectors to foster opportunities for singles to interact in social settings in Singapore. Besides coordinating and facilitating dating activities offered by the private sector, it also serves to educate the public on singlehood issues. Other responsibilities of the SDN include providing the necessary infrastructure and support for the dating industry, as...
@OliverSalzburg: There's no easy fix to it
you can't just 'import' people without social problems
@JourneymanGeek Indeed
11:10
especially if you arn't an immegrant society
even if you are
If you don't like immigrants, make your own people! :D
lol
our situation is more complicated
government was encouraging people to have 2 kids. then 3. then realised we had an aging population.
Now its bringing in large numbers of cheap labour. Local chinese and mainland chinese don't get along.
Local tamil-indians occationally have issues with new-immegrants who're from north india
locals get along, mostly
tho we had someone fired from the local labour union's admin staff for posting racist comments on facebook
(My parents are immegrants tho, they fit in. ;p)

@JourneymanGeek immigrants*
ya, that ;p
@JourneymanGeek How did the government achieve that? Or didn't it?
11:24
@OliverSalzburg: massive social engineering
Could you point me to some reading material possibly?
@OliverSalzburg: not really, I've lived this
we even had TV ads!
Well, no matter how ludicrous it may have appeared, if it worked, I'd like to know about it
Would be nice to be able to learn how much the whole program cost, etc.

Q: what's the quickest way to count the number of each character in a file?

KirstinI want to count the A's T's C's G's N's and "-" characters in a file, or every etter if needed, is there a quick unix command to do this?

I love this question, and not only cause I answered it
woah, the next QOTW
i would go with wc myself
@jokerdino: you'd need to repeat the command per charecter then
yeah.
but i mean, i would use wc somehow

@JourneymanGeek For some reason I want to try making a PowerShell solution, just to see how short (long) it is :P

I'm still not sold on powershell ;p
It lacks the elegance of the *nix shell script or the sheer bloody mindedness of cmd scipting.

i think bash is simpler compared to powershell.
