@JourneymanGeek O_o
04:47
@Sathya: Its an old thing that goes around every so often. The scary thing is I know exactly what the picture @Bob linked was.
@JourneymanGeek heh - is that real or just made up stuff
@Sathya: I suspect its sysadmin humour
any geek who did use that sort of thing WOULD post pictures.
05:11
lol
05:45
what's going on twitter? @Sathya
@jokerdino what?
What are you two up to?
time pass :P
Right. :P
I'll give you the benefit of doubt.
lol
06:16
and. I have another recruitment offer ;p
woohoo!
From M$?
naw
see G+ ;p
actually, sounds pretty cool.
06:25
Have fun.
Yes! Do it that way.
lol
why not? Pays better than the current job ;p

4 hours later…
10:46
Oh, imgur support clipboard pasting now
Is that new?
11:01
@OliverSalzburg say what? ah neat.
@OliverSalzburg Not that recent though. But it does not work when I merely copy and paste image using memory buffer, instead I need to copy image itself to clipboard and then it works, but to do that I need to open image in image editing software like MS Paint.
@Boris_yo It's very nice when the Greenshot Imgur upload plugin isn't working
Bob
Bob
@OliverSalzburg It's been there for a couple of months, I think.
11:09
@Bob Oh wow
July 30th as it seems imgur.com/blog/2012/07/30/…
Bob
Bob
@Boris_yo That's the difference between copying a 'link' to the image file (or however Windows represents files in the clipboard) and copying the actual image data. Your browser probably doesn't translate the 'link' to image data, which is what imgur is expecting.
@OliverSalzburg That recent? o.O
@OliverSalzburg I don't see this plugin available in Greenshot
@Boris_yo Maybe you haven't installed it or you're using an old version that didn't have it
0.8.0 build 0627 @OliverSalzburg
@Boris_yo 0.8 is stable but very old
11:19
@Bob Exactly! Difference between "Copying Path" and copying exact image data to clipboard.
@OliverSalzburg And newer is unstable?
@OliverSalzburg GreenShot is missing quite useful feature which is... Guess!
@Boris_yo Well, it has more features and more bugs
Bob
Bob
@Boris_yo I guess it is possible to write a clipboard handler detects image files and copies the image data into the clipboard... there probably is one somewhere.
@OliverSalzburg Bugs won't scare me anymore as I have this:
@OliverSalzburg It is missing Undo/Redo! I don't understand why it is still not implemented feature in GreenShot.
Remove hiberfil.sys to save space on SSD drive? Oh thanks for advise because I just got this in Event Log:
Bob
Bob
@Boris_yo Unfortunately, that tends to cause more bugs if you use it on a computer...
@Boris_yo Depends if you want to hibernate or not.
Also depends if you actually need that space...
@Bob I want to Hibernate in an emergency where battery is 1% left.
Bob
Bob
11:25
@Boris_yo Then don't disable it.
@Bob I can instruct to StandBy in low battery and Shut Down in critical battery though...
@Bob But the more free space SSD has the better it performs.
@Boris_yo Well, the 0.8 is the stable version. You won't see any new feature in it. If you want the new features, use the unstable version.
@OliverSalzburg Does unstable version have Undo/Redo?
Bob
Bob
@Boris_yo Perhaps to an extent. Say, leave a certain percentage free (I'm not sure exactly how much, I don't use SSDs). But trying to save every byte you can, when it's nowhere near full, is kinda pointless in my opinion.
11:27
And what can happen in worst case scenario with unstable open source program?
Bob
Bob
@Boris_yo Worst case? For an arbitrary program? Well, it could be destructive to hardware...
Could corrupt data. Could break the OS.
@Bob To hardware?! Not just data?
@Boris_yo The "worst case scenario" is the same for both the stable and unstable version :)
Bob
Bob
@Boris_yo If you mean GreenShot specifically, it probably wouldn't do any of that.
@OliverSalzburg Then what about sever case scenario?
Bob
Bob
11:28
@Boris_yo It's possible for software (perhaps with a driver) to fiddle with, say, CPU overclocking.
That would be bad.
@Bob Because it does not require admin rights?
@Boris_yo I've been using the 1.0 version since very early (and buggy) versions. The worst thing that happened was simply that stuff didn't work :P
@OliverSalzburg So the risk here is loss of unsaved work?
Bob
Bob
@Boris_yo You asked about 'unstable open source programs'. Not any specific program.
@Boris_yo Yes. But even that is minimized because the 1.0 version behaves differently if an action fails.
11:30
@Bob Okay let me be specific and refer exactly to GreenShot.
@OliverSalzburg It saves session?
@Boris_yo The unstable is already at RC2. So it's pretty mature by now.
Interestingly enough, I did not find any session manager for Internet Explorer... Okay I did but it is not only paid but separate software which is not addon/extension like Firefox and Chrome.
@Boris_yo If you tell it to upload the captured image to Imgur, and it fails, you can select a new action to try. So if the plugins fail, you can always copy it to clipboard and do something manually.
Can I have quick advice from you people to english grammar?
What would be correct way of saying?

"But you wanted to stay there forever - DID you?" OR "But you wanted to stay there forever - DIDN'T you?"
"You know that - DO you?!" OR "You know that - DON'T you"?
Bob
Bob
11:45
@Boris_yo It depends on context. They all can be correct (grammatically), but they have different meanings...
@Bob About 1st example, the person stated he wanted to stay forever in country but now says otherwise. What would be correct way of asking?
"But you wanted to stay there forever - DID you?" implies that I am not aware that person wanted to stay there forever

"But you wanted to stay there forever - DIDN'T you?" implies that I am aware of the fact that person wanted to stay and now asking why person is claiming otherwise
A question tag or tag question is a grammatical structure in which a declarative statement or an imperative is turned into a question by adding an interrogative fragment (the "tag"). For example, in the sentence "You're John, aren't you?", the statement "You're John" is turned into a question by the tag "aren't you". The term "question tag" is generally preferred by British grammarians, while their American counterparts prefer "tag question". Uses In most languages, tag questions are more common in colloquial spoken usage than in formal written usage. They can be an indicator of politen...

Q: Question tags — "did you" vs. "didn't you"

JimTypically, when we ask for confirmation/denial of a statement, we say something like the following: We turn left here, don't we? You have a cat, don't you? We've met before, haven't we? pairing a positive statement with a negative question, or We don't need that, do we? You don't ...

Q: The current review system encourages faux reviews: some people upvote everything rather than actually fixing it

ЯegDwightI went to a Late Answers review queue that had 4 items in it and started reviewing the first one by editing it into shape rather heavily. By the time I was done, someone else had reviewed the same post simply by upvoting it. So I only got a "Next" button, not an "I'm done" button. My edit still...

why am I not surprised
the biggest problem with the new review is that damn "I'm done" button lights up when you do some action. Upvoting is the easiest, laziest thing to do
13:00
ya ;p
/me thinks there needs to be a 'no, I don't actually need to do anything' button ;p
13:36
ooh
chrome remote supports XP now
14:21
Damn
That should have been on the SU blog :D
14:34
I hate it when websites use jpgs for images that are artificial and expect pixel-perfect reproduction.
It makes my eyes bleed -_-
Bob
Bob
@DarthAndroid I swear any recent screenshot tool will default to PNG. Heck, MS Paint defaults to PNG...
I know. And we're no longer in the days of dialup. A few KBs isn't going to kill anyone.
If you're really trying to show off a product or tool, give it the best screenshots possible >.> Don't make me cringe at the sight of it
Bob
Bob
@jokerdino And another two hour wait for them to switch it from Debian to Ubuntu... See what you did? D:
:P
lol what?
You blame me because I showed you the way? :D
Bob
Bob
You convinced me to use Ubuntu yesterday :P
14:46
Be glad I did. Now set up an account on Ask Ubuntu.
Bob
Bob
Now I'm going to see how much bigger its footprint is...
Good luck.
Bob
Bob
@jokerdino Good luck for what? :S
I mean, good luck in general.
Bob
Bob
Oh, thanks.
15:27
Is there a regex guy here, willing to help me for a second?
Sure.
With whatever I know of regex.
with that said, let me be sure.
Well, it's nothing serious. But something is wrong with my expression and there is an error that expression produces.
Well I am only a bit familiar with sed and awk.
The rest of them, not much.
Alright. Do you know Cryptocat?
No. :<
15:29
well
Well, just googled it. what about it?
I can only share the piece of regex there, as you can only get the idea after the whole file
well, I installed it.
@jokerdino room : superreg
In it.
15:34
esc
I am seeing two of your messages o.O
Like doubles
Bob
Bob
Uhh..
@jokerdino Have you ever used Ubuntu Server (12.04) before?
@Bob Not really. what's the matter?
@Shiki I got like 10 minutes here.

15:46
Or if it's something buyvm did to their image
@Bob That's pretty terrifying. They could just put there: "YOU WILL NEVER HAVE A GIRLFRIEND." :D
@jokerdino on it, now there is still one bug to iron out
@Shiki The thing is, my network shuts down in 10 minutes.
@Shiki If you're logging into something over SSH, isn't that pretty much a given? :P
That you will never have a g/f
Bob
Bob
@jokerdino ...seriously?
15:49
@Bob xD
Hm I got 75 rep in Server Fault for just one answer.. o.O
well
have you ever been to Gaming?
Not much.
If you use Linux, you give up on Gaming.

it's a bit... weird.
okay you will get it once you check it out. :D
15:52
lol
Hungarian? lolz
@jokerdino Never give up on linux gaming. Gaben will come through for us.
oh lawd.
@DarthAndroid Steam beta incoming.
Bob
Bob
@jokerdino Wait a sec, why do you lose your internet connection at a certain time? o.O
15:54
Because my school network is awesome.
it shuts down at 12 midnight. which is in 2.30 minutes.
Bob
Bob
:\
I don't know if that's a smart admin or a weird admin.
Probably both.
Let's say it is in 30 seconds.
Bob
Bob
Ok.
cya.
@Bob Supposed to prevent students from sleeping in class.
Bob
Bob
Oh, you should probably get mobile internet sometime... :P
15:56
I would but the network coverage sucks ;p
ok cya anyway.
Good luck @Shiki
thank you, see ya
16:24
@jokerdino How the hell do you manage to stay up until 12 everyday ?
When do you wake up ?
Bob
Bob
@HackToHell It's not that hard...
It's currently.. uh... 3:30am here :\
I can barely open my eyes after 10
@Bob WUT ?
No job/school tomorrow ?
Bob
Bob
No.
On the other hand, exams next week :\
So you can sleep all day :P
Bob
Bob
Well, I don't sleep all that much..
16:28
@Bob There's still loads of time ;)
Bob
Bob
Probably should sleep more, but things to do! :P
yeah ! lol

Q: How to buy a computer that supports multiple monitors?

Curtis GibbyWhen shopping for a new desktop computer, I'd like to get one that allows me to use two monitors. Is that something that most current-generation video cards can do (in late 2012), or do I need to search for a specific graphics card, or specific attributes for a card? I've Googled the question b...

That is off topic and not closed why? While there is the buying recommendation in title
@OliverSalzburg are you around here? Can you please tell why is not this is off topic?
@avirk He's not asking anyone to pick a product for him. He's asking about how he can adjust his own thinking to learn how to pick the right product himself.
@OliverSalzburg hmmmmm that's make sense. Thanks for clear the doubt :)

A: Why review system disable the "First Posts" and "Late Answers" if I reached daily upvote limit?

msPeachyI think it is because First Posts and Late Answers Review tasks not only allows you to make necessary edits as you see fit but as well as upvoting/downvoting questions or answers which you'd not be able to do efficiently if you have reached your vote limit. Low Quality Posts, Suggested Edits an...

My question is closed there and mspeachy os getting votes :(
@Bob solarized for the win

Bob
Bob
16:58
@slhck :O nice
Much better! Thanks!
@avirk presence of "buying" doesn't imply shopping recommendation, much like absence of it doesn't mean it's not one
@avirk: how to buy vs what to buy
3
17:47
@Bob I use that almost everywhere now, from shell to text editor, it's nice unifying all color schemes
Bob
Bob
@slhck I'm just happy not to have to squint :P
It does look nice though, I might apply it to VS sometime...
@slhck Most horrible to read site, ever.
@TomWijsman Website is a little awkard indeed. I always go to the GitHub repo :P
18:05
Still, it gives a washed out view, and his "in the sun" argument doesn't make the dark version any better either.
I use studiostyl.es/schemes/neon-shadows and have to agree on the washed-out look of solarized
I like the low contrast.. gives me much less headaches after reading for a long time.
But it's personal preference all the way I guess :)
More likely to do with not drinking enough water or the monitor configuration than that it has anything to do with the color scheme. :)
@DarthAndroid Same story, but the opposite way. Too much colors that contrast too much with one another, they would make me crazy. :D
Nah, I just can't stand black on white for too long, is all
5 colors on a single line of code is a bit of overkill. :D
Or you pretend that to be the case, yet you moderate a black on white site and chat on a black on white site on a day-to-day basis.
18:19
I know – and it annoys me :P
Time to set up per-site CSS or something
Would be fun to have color packs for the SE sites...
Ah, I like the high-contrast patterning because my mind starts to use it to identify codeblocks
@DarthAndroid Do you mean code scope? Not sure what you mean by code blocks.

Q: New Design Launched

JinThe new design just launched for both the parent site and Meta. Congratulations! If you see any styling or css bugs, please start a new post, and tag it with "design" and "bug" please. This way it'd be easier for me to track and fix. Congrats again, and thank you for your design input and suppo...

Interesting color scheme they use there
@slhck While it feels weird, it does lay focus on the question titles and the most important tag.
18:31
@TomWijsman not exactly, but yes in a way. Just blocks/sections of source. It's not specific to a particular language or syntax
More of a "I remember working on the code that looked like this. It does X and Y" without me having to read comments or even the method name
Hmm yeah, I have something similar but not as contrasting or as much colors on the same line.
Currently picked Sunburst in Sublime Text 2, have yet to customize it to my liking (mostly which color, like getting rid of the brown text) but I like its idea.

There we go, US VPN all set up :D
It only took all night :\
19:28
nothing is ever easy.
Am I the only person who finds torrents slower than http downloads?
Bob
Bob
@njallam Probably not.
Wow, every time I complain the speed doubles. Impressive.
Bob
Bob
It's quite common for ISPs to throttle torrenting.
yeah, I suppose
Bob
Bob
19:38
It also depends a lot on the peers you are connected to.
The ratio is 0.361 which I assume is not good
(Seeders to leechers I believe)
Bob
Bob
Which ratio are you talking about?
No idea really
Bob
Bob
Ratio itself doesn't necessarily mean anything either.
turning on encryption forced usually helps for me.
Bob
Bob
19:41
For example, you could be connected to the ten slowest seeders, or the three fastest leechers. The latter could give you higher speeds (as long as they have the parts you need).
@Sirex I doubt that blocking potential clients helps with your speeds :x
Yeah, i thought that too. but it does.
Bob
Bob
One thing you could try is restarting the download (stop/start) and hope you connect to better peers :P
or raise all connection limits appropriately and connect to ALL the peers.
that was the other thing i changed ;p
19:43
what about UPnP?
Bob
Bob
@DarthAndroid At which point you'll probably kill your router..
connect to less peers for torrent.
@Bob. My router is running a Core2Duo with 4Gb of ram...
Bob
Bob
Ok, your ISP's servers then :P
IIRC Windows itself has a fairly low connection limit.
the ISP doesn't care, it's just packets to it
and I don't use windows for that. the home fileserver runs ubuntu :D
Bob
Bob
19:45
@DarthAndroid Depends... there may be NAT at the ISP level.
not with a public IP...
Well, I'm seeding now. I hope someone nice is leeching off my 12Mib/s upload speed :P
I've found remarkably few people wanting to leech off of the 100Mbit upload in my seedbox that I use now
Bob
Bob
@DarthAndroid Not all internet users have their own public IP.
Also, I believe I haven't raised the upload speed cap yet. (I don't really care)
Bob
Bob
19:47
I envy your high upload speeds... :\
@Bob, well you said my ISP's servers, and I have a public IP :P
public ips for everyone !
IPv6 ftw!
I support this motion. IPV6!
Bob
Bob
@DarthAndroid Not 'you' specifically ;)
19:48
im at work atm. sitting on a /19 & /22 public block. god it makes me feel guilty.
i think there's something like 4 ips per employee.
lol
my old ISP gave 5 IPs per tenant at the apartment
actually i got my sums wrong. there's 12 ips per employee.
its nuts ;-/ makes me cry everytime i run ifconfig.
@Sirex How would that even work?
the printers, desktops, laptops, wifi access points, servers, routers, are all on public ip addresses. and the rest of the space is sitting there unused.
Bob
Bob
@Sirex printers?!
From a security standpoint, it's stupid to put everything on a public IP..
19:52
kind of. but not really. its not all world routable as the border routers drop alot of the range. but yea, its nuts
and scary too when you run something on your desktop and realise its open to the entire frikking world.
academia ftw. i guess it'll make going to ipv6 easier, cos there's no nat at all.
Bob
Bob
The return of the PC based firewalls...
trust me, you don't know the half of it :)
why would those return?
Hackers globally must be delighted.
every router manufactured in the past few years had a minimal-to-decent firewall
*has
19:55
i'm still trying to make the case for LDAP.
cut + pasting shadow file chunks. woot.
@DarthAndroid Protip: Edit your last post by pressing UP
@njallam Eh, it's a feature I know about, and have even used several times today, but also something that I'm so unused to because it doesn't work elsewhere that I asterisk-correct way faster and without thinking about it.

3 hours later…
22:53
@Sirex: A lot of universities do that kind of stuff, but often the security is solid.
23:27
yea. its not insecure by default. just alarming :)
its the rest of the circus that goes with it thats the issue. telnet, rlogin, etc.
