So.. ehm.. I just (10 minutes ago) formatted the whole laptop and installed Windows 7 Ultimate from zero.. I was sure that my DVD was a pure windows version, but when the installation finished, HP logos appeared everywhere... why? o.o Does the OS recognize that my laptop is a Compaq and does something "strange"?
Is your edition legit?
Last time you were using an edition that was borrowed from your friend or something right?
I suppose ya..
@jokerdino Right... Now I used another one
Alright.
might be driver related?
'everywhere' is not very precise
@OliverSalzburg: the new desktop hyper V varient fixes that
With "everywhere" I mean: A wallpapes with HP logo as desktop background, the HP logos in Computer -> Proprieties, the HP logo when the system started for the first time ans ask me to create an account and give a name to the computer...
Might this is an OEM version?
12:04
sure you didn't grab a recovery disk?
sounds like it
If I say that I used a version downloaded from tpb, you will denounce me? :p
yep
your ip will be traced and we will send cops over there
I'd say that was stupid, since if you had a real key, you could have just grabbed an installer off MS :p
If you didn't...
@jokerdino So I'm save, in italy cops are too busy to twiddle their thumbs xD
@JourneymanGeek I don't...
12:07
haha
Well, chances are you need to learn to download a good dodgy copy
Sorry, I can't help with that, even if i have a few cousins who're experts
@JourneymanGeek Umh?
;p
You don't just download anything You need to know who're the good dealers uploaders
@JourneymanGeek I know I know.. Do you want to see which version I downloader? It seem the trusted uploader of the entire tpb..
no, cause you arn't supposed to link such things here
And i'm out of touch
12:09
@JourneymanGeek Yeah a malware infected Windows is not the way to go
I've been legit for years thanks to MSDNAA. I'll likely end up getting technet when i graduate
(since I want to run a home lab-ish thing anyhow)
@IvoFlipse: donno. I miss cleaning viruses almost ;p
@IvoFlipse If you want the maximum out of your ram and using dual/quad channel then it's best to buy RAM all at once in certified (+tested) pairs/quads, i've seen RAM bought as 2*2 (rather than 1*4) of exactly the same RAM, same production date, same purchase date fail.
@JourneymanGeek DreamSpark allows you to download only the Profession Edition.. I want the Ultimate..
@unNaturhal: just pointing out two reasons why you shouldn't link it here ;p
You guys are killing my wallet :P
12:12
lol
Oh.. o.o
yes, first giant korean screens, now moar ram?
@JourneymanGeek don't forget more HDDs and a GPU :P
hm, Ivo has money to burn..
lol
I would too if i had a job ;p
12:13
oh 32 Gb from other vendors is only ~150 euro
@jokerdino I earn a living with my PC, I want it to be perfect
Maybe ask your wife about it? :P
@IvoFlipse I live with PC. I want a better one myself :(
@unNaturhal Look for an 'Retail' upload (rather than OEM)with just an activation crack, the majority of the time you can just strip out the crack program and the underlying Windows version will be fine to install. I've done it several times for people with failed HDD's and no recovery media.
@jokerdino My GF has nothing to say about my work :P
@IvoFlipse xD then you got the green light already. :D
@jokerdino I do, it just that I don't want to overspend either
brb
12:15
@IvoFlipse Lucky! I had to justify my SSD, thankfully got a £150 bonus from work which covered it xD
conversation along the lines of "i got a bonus at work and i'm going to treat myself, but we'll go out for a fancy meal also" ;)
smart
Now i just gotta find the time (& justify it) to do a complete new install xD
@HaydnWVN Eh.. I was sure to choosen a retail version.. Read this: "This is the most complete release which includes all available versions of Windows 7 (except "N" and "E" editions). 1. Bootable ISO which perfectly fits on classic DVD5 disc. 2. Activated (no serial needed). 3. Genuine version (Windows Update is available)."
Get linux.
Downloading Windows from TPB doesn't sound like a great idea.
@jokerdino Ahahahah! Funny xD
12:18
'includes all available versions' != release version
That wasn't a joke o.O
@unNaturhal The Activated (no serial needed) sounds worrying, means its post-cracked rather than cracking it after install
@unNaturhal Unless that's an Enterprise edition
that wouldn't explain how its working like an OEM version
unless they used the slp hack
@jokerdino It's fault of linux (and GRUB ._.) if I'm in this situation..
and used HP's info
@unNaturhal: and not making backups.
12:19
@JourneymanGeek Yea...
It'll have been a HP OEM/Recovery media if its got all the HP stuff in there, rather than a 'retail' version
@HaydnWVN Ok, I'm f*ed...
thankfully most of the HP stuff is easily removed
@unNaturhal: I'd really suggest getting a disk from microsoft directly
Add/Remove progs
12:20
@unNaturhal Dude, don't get me started on that.
You installed and reinstalled Fedora over Ubuntu over what other mess before we even had a decent chance of recovering grub.
and GRUB is a very hungry powerful program, it'll eat any other boot loader for breakfast without you even asking it to
lol
/s/grub/windows loader
;p
@JourneymanGeek Ok so try to see the problem from another view: where I can download a Retail version of windows 7 Legally (that maybe I will crack..)?
<GRUB> "GIEF BOOTLOADER OM NOMNOM"
ubuntu's PARTICULAR varient tho... won't let you install it to a partition
12:22
@HaydnWVN I know I know... With great powers comes great breaks of balls...
lol yea
what powers? ;p
GRUB powers
xD
balls of fury. such a nice movie
furry balls?
12:24
@jokerdino Dodgeball? xD
-________-
@unNaturhal: w7forums.com/…
this seems to work
then go get a key, or something. Just don't tell us ;p
Ooooh! Nice!! Love you! :p
the grub overlord loves you.
12:27
Just a last question: exists language pack for the entire operative system? Or if I donwload the english can translated in other langs?
and yes, you can google this >_>
beats me
Yeah.. overlord.. You are funny @jokerdino, you are really funny xD
@unNaturhal It's best to get Ultimate if you want to change languages
lol the first time someone calls me funny for quite some time.
i am generally dead serious.
else it'll stay in the installed language i think?
12:28
Think Kristen Stewart
"She used to be Kristie Alley, now she's Kristie City Block"
@HaydnWVN Ultimate is just what I need :D
Just what the doctor ordered.
12:31
xD
Wow, RAM is cheap these days
@IvoFlipse How have you been? How was your trip?
@slhck Great, traveled 4600 km and say lots of mountains, falls, glaciers and lakes
Oooookey! I have to go to lunch!
Thank for the help :) see you later guys ;)
@unNaturhal Just remember that in a moment of weakness... I bought mine legit for the full price :P
12:34
lol @IvoFlipse when you were away, Sathya nominated himself for webapps mod election.
@HaydnWVN o_o you have money to burn xD
@IvoFlipse Sounds awesome! I might talk to you about that in a few months again… maybe want to do a similar trip next year
@unNaturhal I was self employed at the time and any new PC parts (+software) i could claim under expenses :P
Who is that smart dude?
With a SU shirt on him?
@slhck Something like that?
Calgary sounds familiar.
@IvoFlipse Something, yeah :) Banff is definitely on the list.
@IvoFlipse wow great pic :D
12:38
And if I don't make it, I'll go to Norway instead… lol
@HaydnWVN That's was such an awful climb...
@slhck Probably cheaper, though Norway isn't very cheap either
Did you get married @slhck?!?
@IvoFlipse I know. Bloody hell, I've paid around 15€ there for a pizza.
@IvoFlipse In fact I did, yes!
@slhck Congratulations :)
@slhck: congratulations/ condolences (strike out as needed) ;p
@slhck 10 slices of cheese is a freaking $6.60 in Canada, what's a Dutch person to do?!?
12:40
@IvoFlipse Thanks :) Wedding cake pic is also there, matching with the avatar
boo
oh god, that is adorable
@IvoFlipse Oh wow. Bring your own :P
for the love of gouda
@slhck That's probably illegal to import, we almost got into trouble for bringing along our sandwich in the States
o0
One thing to love about europe I guess
12:41
@IvoFlipse Sounds too familiar
/me went from UK to france armed with a giant stack of nutella sandwiches
haha
@JourneymanGeek /me likes this
I'm vegitarian, its a pain in the butt finding food when I can't read
@HaydnWVN: my other computer has the script that converts /me to italics
Nutella is great.. but..
12:42
@slhck That's even better :D
I know right
Indeed lekkerder :P
my girlfriend has found most of europe we've been ok ok for veggies, but france was a nightmare... They just refuse to understand!
@slhck: nutella, peanut butter and chocolate chip was my craziest creation
@HaydnWVN: wierdly, its easier if you're indian
@slhck: what is that, exactly?
Lol i guess they think you're not such an ignorant brit
12:43
Speculoos (Dutch: Speculaas , Flemish Dutch: Speculoos, French: spéculoos) is a type of shortcrust biscuit, traditionally baked for consumption on or just before St Nicholas' feast in the Netherlands (December 5), Belgium (December 6), and Northern France. In recent decades it has become available all year round. Speculoos are thin, very crunchy, slightly browned and, most significantly, have some image or figure (often from the traditional stories about St. Nicholas) stamped on the front side before baking; the back is flat. Speculoos dough does not rise much. Dutch and Belgian versi...
what are these?
look yummy
good job i'm eating my lunch here :P
haha
@jokerdino Spiced cookies made into something like peanut butter
12:45
@HaydnWVN: I find it easier to tell people I'm vegan
(I'm lacto vegan, close enough)
@IvoFlipse Everything I like in a small jar?
lacto :(
Where can I order a carton?
vegan and vegetarian.. argh
Bacon Jam :P
lol Bacon Jam (oh gawd) is out of my area.
12:47
darn
I'd SO have starred the earlier version of that
haha
@IvoFlipse: a local speciality is a sort of luridly green or brown egg jam
@JourneymanGeek i knew it!
user image

^--- star that
What's wrong with yo people? >_>
:D
Coconut jam, Srikaya, or Kaya (; ; Hokkien: 咖吔 ka-iā) is a food spread, a fruit curd in the general sense, consumed mainly in Southeast Asia and made from a base of coconut and sugar. Indonesia, Malaysia, and Singapore Kaya, also called Srikaya (from the word meaning "rich" in Malay based on its golden color) or coconut egg jam, is a coconut jam made from coconut milk, duck or chicken eggs which are flavored by pandan leaf and sweetened with sugar. The spread originated in Southeast Asia, most likely Indonesia or Malaysia. This is reflected by its tropical ingredients santan (coconut milk...
@jokerdino: Its bacon
yeah let's stop with the foodies until my supper :D
anyway @slhck any experience with picking a GPU?
12:49
There's nothing else to be said
Kevin Bacon?
Ah Tom might be of help :P
well, Paul is bitcoin mining IIRC.
who else is into it?
Does anyone have a reason not to pick 3 Tb of 2? Except the long time to format one
@IvoFlipse Quick format!
3 Tb locks you down to certain choises as well, as there are some things limited to 2 Tb, don't ask me what though. :D
12:52
@IvoFlipse Price, only other difference is problably next to nothing now anyways
@TomWijsman I'm not really picky about the model
used to get issues with seek times due to platter speeds, but they're mostly past that now
Just wondering, I was first going with a 1 x 3 Tb because that would double my current memory
But if that disk fails, that'd be a bummer :P
lol very true
If I'd go with 2 x 2 instead, at least I have some redundancy
12:53
@IvoFlipse What exactly is that 3 Tb you refer to, I was assuming hard drive?
i've got 4x 500's in my rig at the moment
@TomWijsman Yeah
You're going for an entire new PC again @IvoFlipse?
will probably go NAS and throw 2TB's in it for storage so its less critical what i do with my PC
Or just upgrading some parts?
12:54
I currently have 400, 500, 2 x 1 Tb, but I don't trust the first 2 and one of the 1 Tb's is also rather iffy
Over a certain size you need to use AF, and can't use bios for booting off mbut that may not be a issue here
Upgrading parts
Oh, upgrades then.
@TomWijsman: we all know how it starts ;p
12:54
@IvoFlipse regarding GPU, all depends on what you're doing, gaming?
Well, 3 Tb requires you to do GPT, dunno if that limits you in one or another way, I don't think so / am not sure.
I think I already have UEFI and I'm booting of a SSD
/me wants a gforce 660 or a 660TI >_>
@HaydnWVN Not much at the moment, but I have a nice 27 inch screen and I can't run 3 machines of one (nvidia) GPU
@TomWijsman From the looks of it, I don't think I would care
@IvoFlipse Then go AMD ;)
12:55
As for GPU, I'm a mobile user so dunno about the newest computer stuff. I prefer Nvidia although my previous card was a disaster and the current one is unstable under higher temperatures.
3 tb is ~136 euro vs probably only 90 for a 2 tb, not sure if its worth paying more (now)
2 x 2 TB sounds indeed nice if you can afford it.
i always loved nvidia until i got an old 4200 Ti, then i switched to Sapphire (ATI) and i've not looked back
although i may go nvidia again next time
I wanted nvidia because I wanted to look at CUDA, but never found the time :P
But I already have an nvidia card at the moment, don't have any experience with mixing cards of different vendors
And well, I'm setting up my tabs again because of an annoying bug in Google Chrome...
If you open a new window, then close your main window, then the new window, it remembers the tabs from the new window. >_<
So, if there's some annoying pop up window that left behind, goodbye tabs!
12:58
@TomWijsman It's always done it, i've got an add-on (at home) that remembers closed tabs
it looks like a recycle-bin next to the wrench
Well, Ctrl+Shift+T does a good job, but doesn't go across a close it appears.
but i can't remember its name lol
this program does, even past a reboot
