would an egpu like razer core x give me fast ffmpeg encodings?
04:48
@barlop iirc .. it depends?
You're going to be restricted to X4 + you need a GPU acceleration build?
And if you don't mind slight quality loss , Intel quicksync is pretty fast/efficient
And doesn't need a egpu
do you think intel quicksync is similar speed?
When I was messing with it it was rediculously fast
if i went the egpu route, then, re gpu acceleration build, do you mean i'd have to put in a graphics card that supports gpu acceleration? or is gpu acceleration something related to the cpu of the computer?

@barlop your build of ffmpeg needs to support it

@barlop Install Gentoo!
root ~ # ACCEPT_KEYWORDS=~amd64 emerge -pvt ffmpeg

These are the packages that would be merged, in reverse order:

Calculating dependencies... done!
[ebuild R ] media-video/ffmpeg-4.4.2:0/56.58.58::gentoo USE="X alsa bzip2 dav1d encode gnutls gpl iconv jpeg2k lzma mp3 network opengl opus postproc pulseaudio sdl svg theora threads truetype vorbis vpx webp x264 xvid zlib -amf -amr -amrenc (-appkit) -bluray -bs2b -cdio -chromaprint -chromium -codec2 -cpudetection -cuda -debug -doc -fdk -flite -fontconfig -frei0r -fribidi -gcrypt -gme -gmp -gsm -hardcoded-tables -iec61883 -ieee1394 -jack
(it's a bit of a meme)
@JourneymanGeek ^
Just being silly here.
@barlop, @JourneymanGeek: Jokes aside, this requires both hardware and software. If you have an NVIDIA graphics card and FFmpeg is built to support NVENC, you can do GPU-accelerated encode.
The same is true for AMD Radeon graphics when built to support AMF.

@bwDraco It's funny how these systems need an entire Windows operating system just to display a PNG.

and in this case the device seems responsive, same for the desktop
might be network jank

Bought a Dell inspiron 15 with Intel Iris last month. Now the new Dell inspiron 14 and 16 is out. Acer put up some aspire as well. Why does the world hate me... it's like the universe is hating me.

Looks like I'll most likely end up with a Surface... Not inclined to get an iPad and have to learn yet another OS and interface :/
