That's what throws me off, the encryption
the files would have to be encrypted again if the certificate changed, wouldn't it?
I mean... otherwise you would have multiple keys unlocking the same encryption
maybe it's just "password protected" and then encrypted

1:57 AM
r.tanner.f: unless the encryption key was rencrypted with something specific to the password in the recovery file

2:48 AM
whoot found my USB charger for my old nokia

Bob
lol
wait, old? didn't old Nokias use those 2mm barrel plugs?

this is a USB -> barrel plug thing

Bob
o.O
never seen that before

Bob
I do have a portable charger with that 2mm plug... and a phone with only a micro USB socket. Considering the 2mm things were rated at 5V, I might just swap the plug :P

2:51 AM
bloody awesome if you have an old nokia

Bob
the N8 had both 2mm and USB charging
the charger that came with it was 2mm

almost all new phones are micro usb
EU mandated it <3

Bob
3:05 AM
@JourneymanGeek Yep. Nice of Nokia to include both though; got some more use out of my old charger... and I find most Micro USB cables are nowhere near as flexible :(

Oh, its after market
least in the case of what i got, i suspect its not actually a nokia part, probably a simplified chinese knockoff ;p

Bob
lol
well, at least passive parts like this are simple enough it's unlikely to be messed up :P

lol
Its a cheap spare phone
and sadly I lost both main reasons I had it in a week ;p

Bob
3:21 AM
huh

Army now allows us to bring in smartphones into non secure areas (which is where I'd mostly be in anyway), and i have a new phone ;p
I was like 'oh, I'll keep this for when i get called back for reservist'
(though its still a good backup phone)

Bob
eh, cheap spare phone? I still have two Nokia phones, one's 8 years old and the other 12... still the most reliable ones I have, and still last over four times longer on a single charge than my current smartphone :P

lol
mine lasts about 3 weeks on a charge

Bob
wow
now that's pushing it :P

I hardly use it
but the combination of a monochrome screen and slightly modern ultra low end hardware means crazyass batterylife

Bob
3:25 AM
not so much the mono screen, but the implied tiny size of it :P

lol
oh it is tiny

Bob
on some of those things, you'd be lucky to see the whole phone number

not as small as the 2100 tho
the screen is readable ;p

Bob
...that's one of the ones I had
:P
snake was surprisingly playable

its a lovely phone, used to have one but it got stolen :/
er no

3:29 AM
@JourneymanGeek I did a little more reading on it. Can't say I entirely understood it ^_^ But that looks like the case, at least roughly. Wish I knew more about it... especially since I'll be taking Security+ this fall

confusing it with another one ;p
colour screen no camera, TINY as hell

Bob
the days before the 0.3MP camera?

ya
It had an ADDON camera ;p
like it would fit into a port

Bob
o.O
Nokia pop port!

On one hand, I'd love to see an answe. On the other, LACK OF BASIC INFO ><

Q: Transfer files on a computer with no USB or networking?

user1608206I have a computer with no USB port or wireless network card, and no other external data transfer ways but only PS2 port and an audio port. How can I get files from/to this system?

3 hours later…
Bob
8:34 AM
@JourneymanGeek No USB, I'd expect a RS-232 (serial) port :\

lol
that would be suprisingly easy
Apparently my sister in law's parents were stuck on a train that ended up in assam (though they were only going from coimbature to madras)
Was packed as hell

Bob
@JourneymanGeek How packed?

@Bob: people sitting in the toilets
not THAT packed tho

Bob
lol

Bob
8:46 AM
o.O

8:58 AM
ya, and it was too crowded for them to get out again at the station they got on in

Q: Windows 8 disk space usage vs Windows 7

LeftiumThe official Microsoft Windows 8 (64 bit) disk space requirements are the same as Windows 7: 20 GB. In actual practice, how does Win8's disk space usage compare to Win7's? Specifically, how does disk space usage compare after a clean install of each? I'm thinking the new Metro stuff must take ad...

I think only bundled windows 7 require too much space while mine is only took about 10 GB.
@Mokubai hi
What do you say about that question?
@Diago are you here?

Q: Please use [modern-ui] instead of [metro], Metro was renamed to Modern UI

Tom WijsmanMetro has been renamed to Modern UI, because it was a code name that conflicts with Metro AG. Feel free to update questions with the new naming as you go around making our Windows 8 part of the site awesome and geared up towards the first weeks in the Windows 8 era... Consider to use modern-ui...

for some reason that makes me want to pee. BRB

Woo! Working Tech Support on Saturday. It's so slow on the weekends. I'm already bored and I've only been here for 1 hour.
Last saturday there were no calls for 1 hour. We are open 24/7, and assist customers all over the world!

ugh
modern UI is a REALLY clunky name,

@iglvzx So... 5 customers total?

2:48 PM
@DanielBeck 5 customers? You mean that we helped on that day? lol

@iglvzx I don't know where you're working but nobody calling doesn't sound like a nice problem to have from a business POV.

1 hour later…
3:49 PM
@JourneymanGeek :D

Awesome video, do not miss it

4:39 PM
@avirk Sorry, was palying a game with a mate and didn't hear the ping

5:19 PM
Awesome. I was just running into a weird error while converting SVN to git repositories. When I looked up the error, I found this :D superuser.com/questions/429686/…

5:49 PM
Halloey! I want to get clear about SSD Retail vs. (non-Retail?)
I heard about Windows OEM and Windows Retails but how can I interpret this term with Soldi State Drive?

@Boris_yo No box, no manual, no screws and cables?

@DanielBeck .. also no adapter from 2.5 to 3.5 and vice versa?

@Boris_yo Possibly.

@DanielBeck And how do you install it in laptop with no screws?

Not sure but I've bought non-"retail" years ago and those were the differences. Now the savings are mostly negligible so I haven't done that in a while.
By buying screws.
Maybe screws are included. I just wouldn't bet on it.
Just clarify with the seller what's in the box (that might not be included) and what's missing.

5:56 PM
@DanielBeck I remember how merchant was touting Intel processor in a box when I wanted to buy OEM...

@Boris_yo IIRC you get no cooler and fan when buying non-boxed? If you get a custom one anyway, no need to buy that...
How important is a computer case with "cable management"?
(unrelated)

6:09 PM
@DanielBeck Asking me?

Everyone

@DanielBeck Good provision for cable management can give much better airflow around the case, but I wouldn't go out of my way to buy a case that cost £50 extra to do the same job that a £2 pack of cable ties could do...

6:47 PM
@Mokubai Thanks
I think I'll just give up anyway, give a buddy of mine a budget and ask him what to buy :-/

This SEDE query points out some possible tag synonyms: pairs that differ only in hyphenation or pluralization
some are already gone, or are false positives
A few I'm not sure of:
vs , does the MIME property require its own tag?

@Gilles Interesting. The first two are false positives though...

vs , there's probably some clean-up needed due to the multiple meanings of “port”. On U&L we reserve for BSD ports, and use or for the networking concept

ibook vs. ibooks is great as well.

and are probably synonyms
@DanielBeck there was one question at the time of the data dump but it's gone now
and and are clear synonyms, but I think should be the main tag, because the official name has a hyphen

@Gilles "iBook" is the predecessor to the Macbook line of Apple laptop computers ;)

7:12 PM
@DanielBeck I know. Was “ibooks” something different?

@Gilles Apple's e-books.

@DanielBeck oh, I'd never heard of these
For scale, this is the SO list. Over 900 entries

Heh. s-video.
@Gilles You could maybe add a -y/-ies feature to the query/queries..

@DanielBeck yes, and -es for words ending in -s
IIRC I tried that one and got many false positives
feel free to clone the query

But thanks in any case for writing it and notifying us. Some of them need a nice cleaning up. Will you post that on MSU as well?

7:17 PM
@DanielBeck I hadn't intended to, seeing as I don't participate much on SU nowadays

@Gilles Alright

@DanielBeck Thanks for the explanation and your patience with this new user :) I've only been posting here for less than a week, still haven't figured everything out yet.

7:35 PM
@terdon You're welcome. Anything else I can help you with?
Getting answers here is a bit easier than in a comment thread..
I cleaned up the comments a bit @terdon
@Gilles How well does that work for you btw? Sounds like something that needs to be cleaned up a lot...

@Gilles O__O

Alright, I'm thinking about buying the following. Any suggestions are welcome.
1. 1x Intel Core i7-3930K, 6x 3.20GHz, boxed (BX80619I73930K)
2. 1x ASUS Rampage IV Extreme, X79 (quad PC3-10667U DDR3) (90-MIBHF0-G0EAY00Z)
3. 2 or 3x Kingston HyperX Predator DIMM XMP Kit 16GB PC3-17066U CL9-9-9 (DDR3-2133) (KHX21C11T2K2/16X)
4. 1x be quiet! Dark Power Pro P9 750W ATX 2.3 (P9-750W/BN174)
5. 1x Cooler Master Cosmos Pure (RC-1000K-KKN2-GP)
or
1x Fractal Design Define XL USB 3.0 black (FD-CA-DEF-XL-USB3-BL)

7:51 PM
@DanielBeck a bit, but it's not a very common tag either way

Q: Splitting the ports tag

Gillesports isn't very big yet, but it's used for very different things. I propose to ban it (because it's too tempting for several different communities) and force the use of more specific tags: BSD ports (packages) → bsd-ports Communication ports such as serial ports → serial-port or the like TCP (...

I see there are a few questions to retag now, I've been lax in my tag policing
now it's 12 BSD, 11 TCPIP and 1 port of an application from another OS
and one of the TCPIP questions is by a mod. Tssk

I can try, what do you find vague about the question? — Louis 52 secs ago
Could someone help? :D
I can't find the right words

Now that Windows 8 is there I really feel like closing Windows XP questions for being too localized. :P

Or comment "your computer is too new for this old operating system, try Windows 8 instead"... :D

10:03 PM
@DanielBeck I don't keep up to date with hardware, but that sounds like a killer setup.
And get as much RAM as you can :D

Hey guys, can I have a stupid question?
;-)

@EinsteinsGrandson Always

How can I top up my PayPal account?

@EinsteinsGrandson First step: Acquire money

10:19 PM
I heard that I just add my debit card to my PayPal account and when I need to pay with PayPal I will do... and the money will be deducted from my bank account
Is it free? I don't pay any fee?

@EinsteinsGrandson Yeah, you can add a credit card to your account in the paypal interface

additional to the price that I should pay with PayPal?
and my money will stay in my account right?

You don't pay anything extra. But whoever you buy from will have to pay a cut.

until I will use PayPal to pay for something , right?
I am expected to pay 10 pounds for 2 books from a guy in UK
he is selling them on Ebay.co.uk

If you add a card to your account, nothing happens. But when you buy something somewhere and decide to purchase with PayPal, you can tell PayPal to take the money from your card.

10:21 PM
So it's much better than toping up my PayPal account by sending money via bank trasfer , right?

@EinsteinsGrandson In my personal opinion, yes.

That way is probably only for people who don't have debit/credit car
d
And people who sell their stuff on Ebay, they are OK with the fact that they have to pay the fee to PayPal or some of them expcet the buyers to pay the fee?
usually...

10:35 PM
I'm still puzzled
I want to pay from my account in the Czech Republic, the currency of the account is Czech crown... the guy who is selling the books on Ebay is from UK...

If you want to use PayPal, familiarize yourself with their terms & conditions. They have a lot of reading material on their site. It's worth reading.
Although, you might not want to use their service afterwards :D

I haved read it on their website and other websites on the internet but still don't get it...

Personally, I like to keep as little money in my PayPal account as possible. I only use it to directly pay via credit card.

That's excactly what I want to do
Only pay when I buy something on eBay
International payments:

There is a fee when you send a payment to someone in another country or if you receive a payment from someone in another country. Please note that exchange rate fees also apply if there is a currency conversion. The Fees section of the PayPal User Agreement has specific information. You can find the User Agreement by clicking Legal Agreements at the bottom of any PayPal page.
^ that's from their website - eBay.co.uk
Btw, do I need eBay account as well to buy something?
When I don't want to bid... only want to buy via BUY IT NOW...

Yeah, you'll need an account

11:39 PM
@OliverSalzburg: Hmm, I wonder if we can sort Unanswered Questions by date somehow.

@TomWijsman Maybe through Stack Exchange Data Explorer

Yeah, but the downside is that the data is old.
So wonder if the API allows us to do it...

@TomWijsman Well, if you want to sort oldest to latest, that's not a problem ;D
@TomWijsman Never looked into the API

@OliverSalzburg: Booya!

11:46 PM
Did you click on the first or the second version of my link?

http://api.stackexchange.com/docs/no-answer-questions#order=asc&sort=creation&filter=!3yUQko7*HeX3Awzs1&site=superuser&run=t‌rue
Seems it kills the * from the URL, so you'll have to copy paste the above one.
Nice thing about this is that it is live, we should make more queries like these and perhaps host them on one or another site to monitor.

Still not working?

Well, I don't know what's supposed to be happening

11:49 PM
It should display JSON at the bottom.

No, nothing of that
Now!

What if you change # to ?, otherwise just ditch the whole string behind it and click asc and creation. Then load in the filter.
Probably could filter more to just show the link and the closed/migrated stuff so it's just a list of links.
Although it is nice to see that after a few a Windows 7 RC already pops up, so it isn't too far back in time the unanswered questions are. Still, very interesting to weed through them...

@DanielBeck: cable management generally means there's more holes to route cables through. Those cases also tend to be slightly better made. It isn't essential, but its a nice thing to have
and whoa that looks good

Should bookmark these API links... So handy.
