good job facebook...
I wonder which one I want
01:01
@soandos is that really ;P
@avirk, yeah, saw it a few minutes ago. Really annoying (not that I would be buying any of course)
Finally I updated my relationship status on FB
@soandos sudn't be
@soandos but what kind of FB credit it is?
@OliverSalzburg Hallo:)
Are you here?
@avirk 21 questions I think
@soandos Oh sorry but I was asking to Oliver
@avirk, sorry, my bad
01:14
btw can you suggest me about an android problem
@soandos no need to sorry I didn't mention him so its generally confuse any1
btw can you suggest me about an android problem
my phone just wake up automatically after few seconds. :(
that is very annoying for me
01:26
@soandos I think the real question is, why are you buying coins on Facebook?
@nhinkle i'm not. I just saw that, and thought that is a new low, even for FB
@soandos I don't get it (despite the obvious exchange calculation error), is that buy another virtual currency with another virtual currency? What are those coins?
@Paul, I think so, but i'm not sure
@Paul Yeah, I think it's like real money --> facebook credits --> coins to be used in apps / games.
@TomWijsman Excellent. I imagine this helps disguise the value of the individual coins to make them more spendy
01:39
@Paul Yeah, allows them to change the transfer ratio while not changing the credits / coins itself.
Why change the euro --> credits if you can change the credits --> coins instead, people pay less attention to the latter I think.
@TomWijsman For definite I reckon
02:26
anyone know how to shrink all text in a word file by x%?
02:41
I just wanted to risk pointing this out... I see this question has 2 VTCs, but I don't think it should be... it looks like it's being VTC'd pre-emptively, out of the possibility that it could turn into a software request, except it isn't at all.

@sathya, did you protectivly close and reopen superuser.com/questions/461269/…?
@soandos yes
Did you receive a ping?
@soandos yes I did :-)
strange. It was not a suggestion...
@soandos, testing old bug
how do you mean? I see you've mentioned my name?
04:03
@Sathya yes, but I manually typed it (note the lower case 's')
as long as 3 letters match, @soa you will get the notification
(as it should now)
@Sathya, I mean that you were not in the suggested user names. That usually means that you are not in the room/have talked recently
and if I ping you, nothing will happen
that doesn't hold good for chat - I'll get notifications provided I've been seen in chat in past 48 hours
even if the name's not present
its like doing @nobody. He won't get a ping from this (I don't believe, feel free to correct me)
ah, so why is the suggestion list different from the users that can be pinged list?
@soandos that is correct.
balpha explains here:

balphaThere's an event handler that fires for key and click events, and checks whether the cursor is currently on a word that's preceded by an "@". MT/s anybody know what this means?
metric ton?
In computing, DDR3 SDRAM, an abbreviation for double data rate type three synchronous dynamic random access memory, is a modern kind of dynamic random access memory (DRAM) with a high bandwidth interface, and has been in use since 2007. DDR3 SDRAM is neither forward nor backward compatible with any earlier type of random access memory (RAM) due to different signaling voltages, timings, and other factors. DDR3 is a DRAM interface specification. The actual DRAM arrays that store the data are similar to earlier types, with similar performance. The primary benefit of DDR3 SDRAM over its ...

1 MT/s is 106 or one million transfers per second.
In computer technology, transfers per second and its more common derivatives gigatransfers per second (abbreviated GT/s) and megatransfers per second (MT/s) are informal language that refer to the number of operations transferring data that occur in each second in some given data-transfer channel. It is also known as sample rate, i.e. the number of data samples captured per second, each sample normally occurring at the clock edge. The terms are neutral with respect to the method of physically accomplishing each such data-transfer operation; nevertheless they are most commonly used in the ...
@soandos thanks dude!
@KronoS, its all google + wikipedia :)
05:16
@soandos What is this google thing people keep banging on about? I know wikipedia though, it is one of those insects right?
@Paul google and wikipedia are two of the smartest people I know. I just hit something when I want them to tell me something, and they do
So I've finally cracked 10k and now I have no idea what I'm doing :-). If I have any questions, I'll be sure to ask. But first, bed time.
@RandolphWest congrats, and good night

Memory.  Every Super User knows that they need it, and if you’re like me, you can never get enough.  I know I somehow find ways to use up all 16 Gb of my memory on my desktop.  In fact, back in Nov 2010 Tom’s Hardware suggested that the minimum system RAM should be around 8Gb!

But what’s really frustrating is buying memory.  There are so many factors to consider that it can get overwhelming.  This is the same issue that Super User nathpilland had:

So here we go.  This blog post is a stab at defining the basics you need to know about RAM. …

Chrome lost my open tabs again >:(
And all because Windows rebooted to install some updates while the system was in sleep mode.
@OliverSalzburg why it lost it should open the last history where chrome shut down.
What the...
@avirk No it came up empty. The recently closed tab only showed tabs which I actually closed yesterday. The 30 that were still open were lost.
@OliverSalzburg What the F***
So I restarted Chrome. Then the recently closed tab was empty. And my phone showed that Chrome synched 1 open tab 1 minute ago.
So I just killed all open Chrome.exe processes. Restarted Chrome. Now all tabs are back O__o
@OliverSalzburg You mean you are trying to open them on phone after shut down the PC
09:16
I guess this is an acceptable outcome :D
@avirk I only checked on Chrome on my phone to see when my desktop last synced.
The whole story happened on the desktop alone.
@OliverSalzburg Thats creepy I have not faced it yet. Have you Googled it?
@avirk Yeah. It happened quite a few times already for me. Always the same pattern. When I Google it, I get too many false positives from other, generic, sync issues.
@OliverSalzburg I have not try to sync it so may be that's why i didn't face it.
I will check it out if this happens to me
Bob
Bob
@OliverSalzburg Automatic updates...?
@Bob hello dude.
09:20
@Bob Possibly. When I restarted Chrome. I saw it spawned a setup.exe in Process Explorer. Then nothing happened. I started "another instance" and my windows/tabs from yesterday came up.
It's also impossible to reproduce intentionally. Or, at least, I have interest in breaking my Chrome :D
Bob
Bob
I wouldn't be surprised if they (automatic updates) were responsible for most work lost on Windows computers :P
@avirk hi
@OliverSalzburg Reproduce? Uninstall an update and leave it on overnight again? :P
@Bob Ummmmm I have never face that problem. I always finish my work to install the updates
Bob
Bob
@avirk Are they set to automatic?
@Bob Oh, you were referring to Windows automatic updates. Yeah. I believe these automatic reboots, when there is a saved session in sleep mode, are part of the issue
Bob
Bob
As in, install without any user intervention and automatically restart if there's no one there to cancel that?
@OliverSalzburg But... it wouldn't be sleeping at the time of reboot, would it?
09:23
@Bob No, if my computer is on. It won't reboot. Only when it sleeps
Bob
Bob
Which means sleep shouldn't play a part...
@Bob aha! I missed it.. Nope let me choose to install it or not
Bob
Bob
@OliverSalzburg Weird. The last time I tried enabling automatic updates, it popped up a nice countdown threatening to reboot :P
@avirk Yea, that one's safe from auto reboot.
Like, I have never actually seen it. But at night, I press my power button and send the machine to sleep (suspend to RAM). The next morning, it is off completely and has to do a full boot.
When I log on, Windows tells me it installed updates.
Bob
Bob
@OliverSalzburg The default time is 3 AM, so that might be it.
09:25
@Bob Yeah.
@OliverSalzburg I think you should have to change them to manually instead of automatic.
Bob
Bob
@OliverSalzburg Also, says something about my sleep patterns, me being on my computer when it happened... :P
@Bob I'm currently in the process of shifting my sleep cycle. No more 3am for me :P

The first one is a good candidate for a boot up the lower back. He just puts the link, no information. The second one adds a disclaimer, and writes a short summary of the solution
Now I have no idea if his answer is actually right. But it does seem to answer the question, and it's a good quality.
@Bob I just remembered that I'm a domain member... Damn! Now I gotta adjust this in the AD...
the answer should work.
not the most elegant solution but i can see how it can work.
@jokerdino thanks
Other hint about the good and bad way. The first one is obviously an ad trap. Designed to attract people from search results, to show them 4 banners. The other one is just a personal/tech blog
I got to find a way to sneak in links to my blog. Hm
I tend to document things on the site instead of my own blog. :(

Q: How to Disable Hovering Selection Block in File Browser?

BGMI am changing from Windows XP to Windows 7. lol :D
where i work we have several different departments and IT is reponsible for them all... half the time we're placing 'blame' to claim funds from different departments to get funds to fix/solve
the past couple of days we've hit some backup issues so rather than out generic funding going on new machines for one department (which we'd then get funding back from) we'll probably have to divert it to some newer backup drives. Now if i can place blame for who's saved so much extra to the shares in question i can get funding back for that too rather than just having to absorb it
@Bob Do you know if there are alternative group policy editors for AD?
@HaydnWVN ok i got to help you on this.

Its been a while
@OliverSalzburg I've not come across any, but not activly looked or that heavily involved with AD
@Bob What annoys me is this, you have a GPO and you edit it. It's a pain to find the actual template that was used for the GPO in the policy editor.
(only support 1 Windows server here)
@HaydnWVN I haven't looked at all either yet. Should do that
@OliverSalzburg like the original?

@OliverSalzburg what is it missing?
@soandos A working plugin to upload screenshots
There
I don't do german?
Like, you have all the GPOs on your left and you can see clearly, on the tab on the right, which templates were used for it (as they are shown in various shades of blue).
10:58
lol love how some of its german, others blatantly not
OK, and...
@HaydnWVN Some objects are automatically named by SBS and are always English
@soandos And when you select a GPO and edit it, you just get the plain old normal gpedit
Personally, I would like it if the branches that contain used templates are shown in bold, or something like that.
Even when using susternal''s tool?
The you'd instantly find the templates you may want to adjust. But this way, you always have to open the settings tab and follow the shown path.

@soandos I guess I better double-check
(I have no idea, and can't check right now, but it would surprise me. The tools are usually standalone)
@soandos I wasn't even aware that you could invoke the group policy editor through ADExplorer. In fact, I wasn't even aware that the GPOs are stored in the AD.
I thought they were stored in the SYSVOL
Nope. I think they wanted to keep it all together, and it was relatively simple to make it work that way. As of 4 years ago, I seriously messed with these files to get the AD permissions I wanted locally
huh
Good to know :)

Q: Collecting antique CPUs (as an investment) - is it wort it?

downvotes on answers aren't
@jokerdino Yep
Jeff Atwood on June 13, 2011

In March 2010, we rebalanced our reputation system to favor answers.

While we value good questions (and asking a great question is absolutely an art), we want to explicitly encourage people to provide the best possible answers. Without people interested in providing good answers, the questions are moot. We know that answers have more intrinsic value than questions, and the reputation balance should reflect that.

The question asker already enjoys a substantial benefit beyond reputation gain from upvotes on their question — namely, they get great answers to their question! Thus, the asker shouldn’t need as much reputation gain. …

> Downvotes on questions no longer cost the casting user 1 reputation, so they are effectively “free”.
Should never have been changed for MSO though. Good questions are at least as valuable as good answers.
15:52

whoa whoa whoa
upon closer reading, it may be just random speculation
@nhinkle Considering another retailer somewhere in the EU speculated something closer to $1200, I'd say "no one has a clue how much the Surface tablets will cost".
The RT version is the ARM version, and MS has said it'll cost about the same as current tablets, so no way it'll be $1200 for that version
Ya. I think it later came out that they priced it that high for pre-orders and planned on refunding however much over they went, when they actually get a real price.
I'm hoping Microsoft is right, though. They could be forced to raise prices, depending on market factors. So we'll see.
@nhinkle I think your source is a little closer to what it will be
They're trying to compete in a VERY saturated market. Make it cheap enough that everyone is willing to try it, and they might just get hooked enough to pay more later
plus there's the apps and stuff too.
@KronoS I don't think it's as saturated as you might think. Android tablets (aside from the Kindle Fire) have had a very hard time getting traction, due to differences in perceived quality. The tablet market is essentially all Apple right now. So, I think there's room for Microsoft, here. Android is only just starting to get up to speed with Project Butter, so I think competition in the tablet market is going to just start getting good.
17:28
@sidran32 Although I don't consider it a "tablet" Kindle has had a lot of traction as well...
and many other consumers do look at those as well.
@KronoS I did mention the Kindle Fire. The original Kindle (and other similar products) are in their own market segment, really, as e-book readers.
Though the iPad and the Kindle Fire together hardly constitute a saturated market, IMO. :)
You're right though... the market is predominantly Apple, and coming in at more than 1/2 the running iPad price is very appealing
for 200 bucks I don't even care, I'll pick one up.
I think Microsoft may be able to differentiate themselves quite a bit with their unique UI, too. And that they're Microsoft, I think, might get their foot in the door a little. They have been doing tablets for a long time, even though they only were able to reach a niche market.
But it means they have a potential IP base where they can very quickly come up to speed.
Was that star intentional or did I "photo-bomb" @r.tanner.f, there? :P
intentional lol I think the tablet market is going to get really interesting really quick
17:33
Ah :) Ya. Looking forward to it.
I've been missing having a tablet since my last laptop (a Win 7 convertible laptop/tablet) died and was replaced. I could repair it but my mom owns it now. :P
I've been holding off on Apple because I'm not a fan of the UI and I don't want to have to deal with Apple software for Windows. So we'll see.
@OliverSalzburg I don't know about Super, but I've seen OpenCandy bundled before in other legitimate software installations. I forget what, though.
what don't you like about the UI? never heard complaints about it
@sidran32 I've never heard of it. Even though I used some of the applications listed here: malwaredictionary.com/opencandy
@r.tanner.f It's just preference. The grid of icons feels old, boring, and I just don't like that kind of organization, anymore. I had it on my old Palm PDAs, it's on my Vita, and there's just no love for it. I use a Windows Phone so I've kind of come to love (what's formerly known as) Metro and its live tiles, personally.

@sidran32 hm, I could see that. things tend to be lost in a see of icons, and I do miss widgets
but then the primary apple user in the house is actually the 3 year old so... >_>
Oh wow, a few of my programs have been bundled with OpenCandy. runs a scan with SpyBot
@sidran32 BTW, about that Outlook thing. I wonder if there is a size (or other) limit to that behavior.
@OliverSalzburg I think most email services (including Exchange) have a size limit for attachments. I don't know if Outlook enforces one, itself. Of course, when using Outlook, though, it's only courteous to not send very large attachments. If it encroaches a couple MBs, I'll usually compress it, if possible, or transfer it some other way (like providing a link, or bittorrent).
@sidran32 I meant, I'm not sure if Outlook still makes such a copy even if the file is 1 GB in size. I know it wouldn't be reasonable to attach such a file to an email. But maybe there are other factors where Outlook would decide against a copy.
@OliverSalzburg Ah, I see what you mean. Maybe it will just refuse to attach a file over a certain size since email probably isn't the best way to transfer such a file, anyway? I never actually tried.

@sidran32 I just wanted to make sure you're not relying on my answer for 100% correctness ;)
@OliverSalzburg I think you are correct. So I accepted it. I wouldn't ever attach files that large, so it's outside the scope of my usage, anyway :)
Interesting note, email was never designed for transferring large files, like that. File attachments were sort of tacked on in a kludgy way, later. Same with using HTTP for transferring files. FTP is better. :P
