I had a friend ask me why they couldn't use their older netbook on a TV. Went from VGA to DVI to HDMI. :(
I had to explain digital and analog and explain what was going on.
It was cute though.
18:26
@Sathya The SkyDrive is synced now, in case you were waiting for that.
@OliverSalzburg thanks.. there seems to be no easy way to transfer them to my skydrive

Any idea why a silent install might run perfectly when running the command directly from the command line, but when running the exact same command from a batch file, it just silently fails to do anything?
19:12
@nhinkle Are you sure both are executed in the same context?
Like, are you issuing the command on the shell, but are double-clicking the .bat?
Otherwise, procmon
Like, are you issuing the command on the shell, but are double-clicking the .bat?
@OliverSalzburg as in, the same working directory? Yes. The path is fully specified in both cases. The weirdest thing is that the executable is definitely running, and definitely receiving the right arguments. The first three lines of the log file are identical, but then in the failed installer, the log file just ends there - no errors - and the successful one goes all the way through.
Hmm. Yes, I was double-clicking the batch file, and running the command from inside the command line.
@nhinkle Like, I set up my cmd to always start with elevated privileges. Differing behavior would be expected.
i'm making some changes to the VM, but will try running the batch file from the command line
I did elevate it first. Right click -> run as admin.
Did you run the .bat as admin as well?
yes. both cases were elevated
19:16
Maybe processes don't inherit the elevation from a .bat?
Hmm. That's worth checking. Although in every other case since ever, they have.
if you type start cmd in an elevated command prompt, the spawned cmd is also elevated
Ok, worth a shot ;D
I'll try your suggestion of seeing what happens if I run the .cmd from the command prompt directly

Is there a free dictionary online? Like a database.. like geoIP?
I mean a file or a database (whatever shape/container it may be), that contains a German-English dictionary. For example.
Is it possible to open a user's question (if it could actually be helpful to others) if they closed it?
Heh.. I was going to answer a question about how to grant a user Administrative priviledges in Windows 7, but someone downvoted it (with no comment), and then the user deleted the question.
@Shiki dupe of a deleted post...
sidran32 : That just happened with a question about opening ports in Windows Firewall - I (quickly) searched the website and couldn't find a similar question (I probably could if I dug around).. but that would have been helpful to others.

@ekaj Well, you could ask it and then answer it yourself :)
I think I will

A: Make a user account an administrator account in Windows 7?

sidran32There are a couple ways in which you can do this. For both methods, you will want to log in under an existing user account with administrator access. 1) The first (and simplest) way is through the User Accounts control panel. First, open the Windows 7 control panel, and click on User Accounts a...

@ekaj I don't know about a repair CD. Windows installation media can boot into a repair mode, and obviously you can reinstall from that as well. If you have a dedicated repair CD, I doubt you can install from one of those.
psh.. I knew that =p
I didn't get an installation CD.. and I want to move my OS from the HDD to SSD.. I figured that would be the easiest method

You can download Windows installation disc images from Microsoft's website directly. You would just need to buy a license if you don't have one already, after that.

Holy paper clip asking me questions batman. SuperUser is Window 98!!!!!!
@danielbeck What did you mean with the print0 and read -d '' thing? I saw you removed the comment?
Wow, Windows 7 Home Premium is going to take me 9 hours to download on this computer. BLAZING FAST!
21:20
@slhck Yes, I wondered why the nul was recognized as separator. Then I noticed that I didn't need that for my solution and sliced off most of the code.
Ugh. So much for Automator's automatic output handling...
$ touch $'foo\nbar' :-(
@DanielBeck Uh. That's unfortunate.
@DanielBeck Yeah, I tend to play it really really safe with bash and filenames these days. Sorry :P
@slhck I can understand that, but why does it work? man bash says nothing about nul with read...
@DanielBeck Simply telling read to use the null byte as its delimiter, because that's what it gets from find -print0?
Or am I missing something here (because I honestly could, I'm not sure I entirely understood every piece of these concepts)?
@slhck @DanielBeck Hello again. Word "merchandise" is what gender?
@Boris_yo That's inanimate, it has no gender, really
21:34
"This store has a wide range of merchandise that has OR have its/their own price tag"
@slhck Don't tell me that the first character of the empty string is the nul byte?! -d delim The first character of delim is used to terminate the input line, rather than newline.
That is messed up.
Hello, I am looking for an alternative to Gmail as email service and I'd like to ask you for a recommendation or two.

I am perfectly satisfied with Gmail's feature set, except that I am looking for a service run by a company other than Google.

Specifically, the service I am looking for has to be:

* free
* with a good mailbox size (I'd say 0.5-1 GB minimum)
* a good web interface, fast and keyboard-friendly (à la gmail)
* possibility to export mail via IMAP and/or POP3 is a good plus

What do you suggest? Thanks!
@slhck Weird... Look at this:
@Boris_yo So what's weird about this?
@slhck There is singular and plural.
21:39
@DanielBeck Don't ask me why. I'd use $'\0' if it wasn't a PITA to type
@Boris_yo That's grammatical number, not gender. These two have nothing to do with each other.
@fdierre Why are you wanting to get away from Gmail?
@slhck Okay then, what would be correct here?
"This store has a wide range of merchandise that has OR have its/their own price tag"
Estonia, grocery store
@Boris_yo The clause "that …" refers to "merchandise" in singular. Therefore: "This store has a wide range of merchandise that has its own price tag"
But, on the other hand:
> This store has a wide range of fruits that have their own price tag
I hope this is correct, but I'll trust my feeling
@slhck Okay but how would you word that sentense so instead of "fruits" it would be "merchandises"?
@Boris_yo I don't think I have ever seen the plural of "merchandise" in use.
21:45
@slhck It's a range, not multiple fruits though, isn't it.
If you wrote "merchandises", you'd have to use "that have their own …", of course.
@slhck But it exists? Just isn't used.
@DanielBeck Does the range have the price tag? Or the fruits? I don't know, I thought the fruit.
@Boris_yo Probably, yeah.
A range of products is as singular as the box of chocolates, isn't it?
Shopkeeper yelled: "Don't touch the merchandise!"
21:47
@DanielBeck Good point!
We might need a native speaker here :P
@KronoS what do you think?
@slhck uh... what did I miss :P
As it's English and we're out of school, we can just write whatever looks good. There are no rules.
@Mr. Captain Spock What do you think?
@KronoS Which of the following is correct?
> This store has a wide range of fruits that have their own price tag
> This store has a wide range of fruits that has its own price tag
@Borat Any thoughts?
21:49
I thought the subclause (?) would refer to fruits, but @DanielBeck thinks it needs to refer to range of fruits
Oh man... this is why I'm an engineer... I believe that the first is correct
@KronoS Why are you an engineer?
Oh, 8 flags, brb
@Boris_yo cuz I suck @ engrish
@slhck Actually you're right. One price tag for dozens of different products wouldn't be that useful...
21:50
@KronoS Don't oversell it, haha
@DanielBeck So, I guess it always depends on the semantics
@DanielBeck I thought engineer's principle is to think that 1st solution is always correct...
Can anyone confirm if this works?

A: Horizontal scrolling shortcut in Windows

iZikuluHold Ctrl+Shift and scroll with you mouse wheel (Windows 7)

@slhck Depends on the applications AFAIK.
@slhck incorrect
@slhck I have volumouse program that uses SHIFT as a shortcut so nope.
21:53
This is really random, but say you have a quad core processor - would it be possible to allocate 1-2 cores to a virtual machine?
@ekaj yes
How would you do that..?
@DanielBeck Then again — Isn't the last character of every string a null character? Like in C or something?
well, I don't have any virtualization software atm, so I can't really look through the settings
@ekaj in VMware, just pick the number of cores, and the number of threads
I am sure it is possible in virtualbox as well, but not sure how
21:55
ah! sweet! thanks =p
in English Language and Usage, 49 secs ago, by RegDwight АΑA
@KronoS have, their, if you ask me.
@slhck You're opening a real can of worms here AFAICT.
Worst case, just set the process affinity in task manager
> Because BASH internally uses C-style strings, in which '\0' is the terminator, read -d $'\0' is essentially equivalent to read -d ''. This is why I believed read did not accept null-delimited strings. However, it turns out that BASH actually handles this correctly.
I wouldn't have expected C internals to bleed into shell scripting...
21:56
> I checked BASH’s souce code and found the delimiter was simply determined by delim = *list_optarg; (bash-3.2/builtins/read.def, line 296) where list_optarg points to the argument following -d. Therefore, it makes no difference to the value of delim whether $'\0' or '' is used.
Who would have thought
@DanielBeck the most common case of that happening is when files don't end with a newline, and many c programs don't handle that
@slhck What I guessed above, but still wondered why. Thanks for the link.
good night everyone
Night @DanielBeck!

gmail webapp - but it's also keeping my mobile app from seeing them (I don't get notifications on trash emails) :<

Anyone know, in UBCD4WIN, how to add an ISO to the startup menu list?

@paradroid If I make that a question, do you want to post that?
@Luke You could answer it yourself if you want.

23:05
@DragonLord the question's closed anyways, so it being locked shouldn't affect you too much.
I'm sorry they harassed you, although I would recommend in cases like that just not engaging. I know it's hard when they're saying all kinds of BS, but escalating the situation rarely helps.
@nhinkle what is the text above the closed auto-text?
I think that was a good question
@soandos One I put there to prevent exactly those kinds of answers that have been deleted
@slhck so its custom text that you put there? Never seen that done before
@soandos No, it's actually boilerplate text
23:10
huh, good to know
IMO it could be used more often, but there's a fine line between a question not being constructive and just the answers not being constructive

If you know what I mean
Anyway, I'm out. See you guys around.
If I don't have a pro key, does windows 7 still lock, or does it do the annoying "your winders is not genuine" thing?
@ekaj what OS key do you have?
@ekaj No idea. I only have genuine Windows installations.
I have home premium - but when I get to school they'll give me pro keys
I don't want to set up my laptop how I'd like it then do it all again after school starts
23:17
install home premium, then upgrade later
If you get VLK keys I think you will have to do so anyway. Are you sure you are not getting Enterprise and not Professional?
CS majors get professional - and I'd prefer not to upgrade
why not?
bah, apparently it will only lock a few features
You can reset the activation period three times, IIRC, so that should get you to term time.

dunno, I'm just funny about that
