I use text Beyondcompare for text comparison. I was surprised to learn it still doesn't have the option enable word wrap, though people have been asking for it since 2008. I wonder why this is.

Hi all, anyone around?! Going crazy with a small issue, and, wondered if anyone had a second or has a clue what's going on (I've solved, but, don't understand the problem...

I have a second
can't promise a clue :D

heh! Hi... :)
So... I have a folder with hundreds of CSV files... I want to merge in to one file so I can do a complex operation once on a column instead of hundreds of times...

Anyway, I tried a few things first to merge easily and I used powershell - get-content *.csv | add-content merge.csv

pretty simple... but I first tried a few things like "type *.csv > merge.csv" ... this failed because it tried piping merge.csv itself... so, went in a loop... can solve by having the merge in a different folder... but, don't care because the powershell worked.

ah
its mentioned in copy /? :D

and, then even weirder... I tested the above by putting the following:

test 1a,test 1b
test 2a,test 2b

In test.csv, and copied to test2.csv

When I tried running copy *.csv merge.csv, it did do what I expected... but, it additionally added garbage at the bottom... (I'll try a screenshot...) why on earth did that happen :/

> To append files, specify a single file for destination, but multiple files
for source (using wildcards or file1+file2+file3 format).

1:28 AM
hmm... :/ I feel silly, that's completely new to me...
well, it still isn't working...

what's the garbage and where's it coming from?

there we go...

hm
are they really CSVs? :D
looks a lot like some flavour of control charecter

hmm...
test.csv is double the size, I wonder if encoding messed up...
but, still, I don't get why it's merging like that :/ just one of those things... I don't care too much as the problem is solved, but, it's driving me crazy that I couldn't understand why it didn't work the simple way!
Maybe there is an encoding issue... no idea how/why they changed... it was literally one file I copied to another :/

one is unicode, one is ansi... :D

1:36 AM
I have no idea at al how one became ansi... just tried again with the unicode and it seems to work... I had no idea copy could be used this way (THANK YOU!... and, I wish I read help!)... but why on earth did one file get created in different formatting, and, why does this cause an issue?!
lol... I was trying with proper commands, e.g. type (instead of cat in linux) then piping/output to a new file... I had no idea copy could be used this way :/
And, I love powershell, but, the older commands do seem simpler!!
Anyway! Thank you! :) and, hope you are well? Been a while...

lol
doing alright, considering the state of the world :D

1:52 AM
heh! :)

Looking for recommendation for free/open source app to trim mp3 audio file. Very simple.

@northerner - Try VLC, the convert option under advanced has a start/stop time... If not, I've had some success with quick edits on Windows Movie Maker or Imovie on my phone... saving as a movie then doing a convert to audio...
the video editing tools typically make it much easier to visually trim!

2:13 AM
thanks Wiliam!

Hi everyone, how to get windows 10 product key from my system?
I tried the wmic path method on cmd but it doesn't work
Tried the (Get -Wmi...) on powershell but doesn't work
slmgr /dlv shows partial product key
I then created a vbs file, as mentioned in this blog and it did alerted a product key
But the product key in the message box and partial product key shown by slmgr doesn't match

What do you want it for?

I have a question about my laptop battery.
I am using my laptop every day at home while plugged into the AC.
Playing CSGO causes my CPU fan to run loudly and the fact is, heat is the enemy of lithium battery. The point is I want to know whether to remove or disable the battery is the best decision?

@XKCD lol
@Hammad What laptop? If the battery is removable, try removing it while it's plugged in.
Disabling a non-removable battery will not help as that does not prevent it from being exposed to heat. However, some laptops have the ability to limit charging to a particular charge level, which can help extend the service life of the battery. (My ThinkPad T14 lets me set a cap between 45% to 95% in 5% increments.)
