what the hell is this kb.parallels.com/en/5683
is that supposed to be an official help article?
> Follow the steps bellow
It really IS that simple ;p
wait. How do you fill a read only disk with zeros o0
@JourneymanGeek Sorry, automated comment :P
Gee, we're down to less than 300 close votes.
XD... finnne ;p
scary innit ;p
hmm su --login is unfamiliar to me. I tended to su alone ;p
00:43
I find myself recommending deletion for lots of answers.
@JourneymanGeek Just heard that you might need this — at least on a Fedora specific site. These commands vary by distro so I tend to look it up before :P
ya. mostly debian here
but the rest of the answer is pretty 'standard'
;p
It is :D
ahh, down to 5 closevotes for today ;p
I'll save the rest for later.
Yeah, gotta be careful about those. I waste them all in the queue, haha..
lol
ditto
I'm still trying to work out the optimal number of votes to use in queues ;p
00:59
This is wonderful: wiki.mozilla.org/Opt-in_activation_for_plugins Firefox can be configured to only load plugins when clicked.
01:15
@iglvzx URL bar autocomplete is also nice in FF 14.
XD
Yay for efficient mods
got beaten to the flag queue for 2 answers
:P
Oh. I can see the individual upvotes/downvotes on the elections page...
This came up in review: superuser.com/questions/316031/…
FYI for anyone who ever has to verify their identity with customer support. If you can, call in. Sending 20 emails back in forth just to tell you to call in, is no fun.
@Paul, and?
01:24
The OP answered his question saying he basically was dropping the approach.
But the question itself is useful, if only it had an answer, but the OP has abandoned it
So it remains unanswered ( questions are unanswered if they have no upvoted answers)
Yeah
So his answer isn't useful, so we leave the question?
Yup. If you want, you can flag the answer as NaA but up to you
It's one by the OP… so I'd be careful with those.
I mean, if it worked for them..
Just close as too localized.
@slhck, its not though
01:28
Why, if it's abandoned, the OP's like f that, SMB ftw lol :P
Cause the question is independant of the OP
This is I stick with something crappy like FAT when sharing drives across OS's. :(
@soandos Well, in a way yes, but on the other hand: If the OP can't even reproduce the situation, the consensus was to close as too localized. I mean, of course, someone could run in the same situation, so I know what you mean.
@slhck, I'm inclined to leave it, but I don't think there will every be any new activity on the post
Yup, that is why I'd probably close it.
01:33
@slhck Cat:3
@iglvzx Is that the cute version? :P
@slhck @soandos Sometimes I think questions should become community owned after a period of abandonment
@Paul, how would you define abandonment?
So that if someone comes along and figures out the answer and posts it and confirmed, we can accept it
I don't mind unaccepted questions.
01:37
@soandos With great difficulty I imagine
That's why we have voting anyway.
@slhck Σ:3 Maybe.
I don't like the idea of others deciding what should work for a particular person.
@Paul, the accepted part is not so meaningful
At least in terms of "accepted"
01:39
I get what you mean, if a question has an upvoted answer, it is answered, even if it isn't accepted by the op
And "accepted" doesn't add much value
Yup, that's the main idea :)
But presumably it stays in the "unanswered" list?
@Paul No, if there are answers with upvotes, then not :)
Right
@slhck Doesn't the same "the question is indepentent of the OP" reasoning apply? "Accepted by community" doesn't imply "Accepted by OP". Although I am withdrawing the entire notion now :)
@Paul Heh, they've had discussion on MSO about that if you want to read :P
01:50
@Nap I'm suddenly sleepy
@iglvzx That is what probation periods are for - for both parties to decide if they want to continue the relationship
If for whatever reason your "friend" feels they don't want to work in the new role, then they shouldn't
@Paul Thank you. Makes sense.
Why you don't try to rob an internet cafe:
02:08
@slhck Good catch. superuser.com/posts/450244/revisions I was wondering why they didn't address the question as worded.
@iglvzx No idea. That user is kinda… meh anyway.
But let's see. Added to the watchlist.
There should be a 10K/Mod user watchlist. (or is there one already?)
There really should, yeah :/
Then new activity from watchlisted users can easily be monitored in a single place.
Hmm
I mean.. the mods probably keep such a list, who knows :P
But not something built-in I guess.
02:14
@slhck you have a watchlist?
@nhinkle Well.. yeah. Is that a bad thing?
@slhck I made a crude approximation...

Q: Moderator Annotated User Recent Activity Watch List

nhinkle NOTE: If you are not a moderator, this script won't add anything for you. All it does is shows the user's timeline (which is publicly visible on their profile) on the moderator dashboard to make it easier for mods to see what users have done since a moderator last intervened. Screensho...

@slhck not at all. I'm just still wondering how you aren't a mod yet.
@nhinkle "2012 Super User slhck and Mod election"
lol
@iglvzx aka the "2012 Super User moderator appointments with dragged out official 'election' for the sake of 'democracy'"
02:17
Well I love this place, so I want to help making it even more awesome. That's my main intention :P
@slhck Lies. ;)
We all know you have ulterior motives.
@slhck That is exactly what someone trying to destroy it from the inside would say
3
Gain their trust and then tear it down.
D:
@slhck shhh don't tell them about the plan
Damn, I'm sorry :P
02:19
@slhck who's on the list?
(I bet it's me. And @iglvzx.)
@nhinkle Yeah. And all the other mod candidates. So I can undermine their reputation. Mwahahaha.
I am on the "posts too many screenshots" list
@iglvzx You're just on the list with usernames I can't pronounce. Which includes myself.
3
@slhck Ahahaha
@slhck how do you pronounce yourself?
02:21
I remember going over this before...
@nhinkle Actually, I was kidding.. It's "soulhack" without vowels.
@slhck Finally! Your true identity revealed.
i just say slick, with a bit of a hacking sound in the middle
Sil-hick
Any chance anyone understand return statements in powershell?
02:22
@BorisYo always thinks about this
Shashlyk or Shashlik (, , )), is a form of Shish kebab popular throughout the former Soviet Union, Eastern Europe, Pakistan, Mongolia, Iran and Israel among other places. Shashlyk (meaning skewered meat) was originally made of lamb (in some extent pork or beef) depending on local preferences and religious observances. These skewers of meat are either all meat, all fat, or alternating pieces of meat, fat, and vegetables such as bell pepper, onion, mushroom and tomato. Meat for shashlik (as opposed to other forms of shish kebab) is usually marinated overnight in a high-acidity marinade lik...
mmm kebabs
lol
Let's see... "iglvzx"... ig-livz-ex?
what do you people have against vowels?
@soandos Actually I was just searching for a handle that was still available everywhere.
02:24
i (zzy) g (a) l v (e) z x <-- the x was added because I thought it was cool... That, or I needed 6 chars for a username.
haha
Be back later
@iglvzx = ih ggle viz ix
Now, I present the true mystery of usernames... @Bob
there fixed ;p

Q: Difference between Office 365 and Office 2013

wbeard52Microsoft recently released the preview of Office 2013. When I went to the download site, it was filled with Microsoft Office 365 information. I an curious; what is the difference between the two software packages?

I needed to get screenshots from THREE systems to get this answer done ;p
is it Office 2012 or 2013?
no idea what 2012 is
and @JourneymanGeek, I disagree with you about the UI
(I think it is very different)
its flatter and has rediculous colours ;p
but there's almost no learning curve
So, the theme is different then.
02:38
@iglvzx, also its a lot more intuitive (IMHO) so no learning curve, but still very different (especially the pane on the right)
@soandos: compared to the previous answer, which is a copy-paste of a speculative pre-release unofficial article... ;p
@JourneymanGeek, its a better answer, no question ;)
engadget gave it a pretty favorable review engadget.com/2012/07/16/microsoft-office-15-preview
And i've edited it to say the same thing with more words
they tested it on a tablet with windows 8 preview, and said it worked reasonably well with all the touch stuff
02:41
I like it enough that i'll put off getting office till this runs out ;p
Its not too bad (other than augh, totally looks out of place) on win 7 ;p
its REALLY fast to start up for one
i think i really want a Thinkpad T430
I'm going to miss the town hall chat tomorrow :(
hm. Looks like i misjudged the amount of money i need for my new system ><
Still on track, but i'm totally wiping out the fudge factor
@SimonSheehan me too
@SimonSheehan I will be working. My work is very strict on non-work related browsing.
02:44
i need to leave some questions for the candidates
@iglvzx me too
@nhinkle, i'm thinking about doing it as I leave work
kinda annoying
from grace's email, it sounds like the timing was just inconvenient for everyone
for $800, i can get a super reliable laptop with a 1600x900 screen, 9 cell 15 hour battery, core i5, and all the trimmings, plus a 3 year warranty... why didn't I buy a thinkpad the first time around?!
@nhinkle Lenovos awesome :)
@SimonSheehan Their products are good, but their customer support was one the worst I've dealt with for OEMs.
02:48
lol
^ that
the battery is the most enticing part. various reviews i'm seeing are claiming 13-15 hours on the 9 cell battery, with real-world usage
@iglvzx you ever dealt with HP?
sadly they USED to have the best customer support. EVER.
@JourneymanGeek, least in some areas they still do
(home visit to replace the motherboard)
@nhinkle Not really. But I remember you dealing with them not too long ago
@iglvzx still dealing with them. WORST.
02:50
@iglvzx Really? I found it quite good here.
@nhinkle STILL!?
It's been a real cluster****
@nhinkle, is there a reason that it is so complex?
Theoretically they'll be shipping the replacement laptop tomorrow. Not the one I wanted, not one I particularly like, but at least they're finally going to do it.
@soandos ummmm I'm not sure if there's a reason per se. I could make conjectures about reasons relating to various people's intelligence, but I'll refrain, since this is a public chat room.
But suffice it to say that with over a month of not having my laptop, I'm not exactly pleased.
OUCH
02:52
Yeah. And they refused to even send me a decent replacement. The replacement is going to be a relative downgrade for me.
@nhinkle, what is their reasoning?
Bob
Bob
@iglvzx ?
@Bob, just about usernames
@soandos basically, they don't have my laptop model anymore, and they can't find the parts to fix it. And they don't have a comparable laptop model either, so they've proposed several replacement computers, none of which I particularly like.
@Bob Hello. Just being sarcastic. We were talking about hard to pronounce usernames
Bob
Bob
02:54
Ah.
@nhinkle, wow, thats strange.
Bob
Bob
@nhinkle Wait, can't find the parts?
What was wrong, and wouldn't buying the parts off some place like eBay work?
How old is the laptop? @nhinkle
@Bob HP's not going to buy their own parts of eBay, but they don't seem to have the parts in stock. Something really unusual must have been broken that I didn't see.
@TomWijsman about a year and 10 months
Oh, that's still relatively new.
02:57
New enough. But anyways... fun fun fun.
Once the replacement arrives, I'm going to try to sell it on eBay, and then use the money from that to buy a laptop that doesn't suck.
Bob
Bob
@nhinkle I mean, if you were to fix it yourself...
@Bob yeah I tried to ask them to just send it back to me and refund me. They said no can do.
The other option is to wait until they get the parts, which may be "never"
@nhinkle Hmm, good thing, hopefully you can get near the price of your old laptop; so your new laptop would only cost you the repair costs it would've costed to fix it.
So if anyone wants to buy a new in box HP laptop... special discount for Super Users!
@TomWijsman hopefully. We'll see what happens.
I've been using my laptop without a battery for a very long time, the previous one burst and buying a new one costs way too much (they're rare)...
03:01
that's no fun
lol
my old laptop runs batteryless
dosen't have space for it on the desk at the moment tho
and running 3 systems at once feels like overkill
you need 1 system with 3 monitors and a lot of VMs :P
lol
Actually, ideal for me is 1+1
practically i'll likely end up with 2+2. 2 primary systems, 2 testing systems ;p
Unless someone local wants a dell 530 motherboard ;p
One thing I like about VMs is I can make snapshots and then revert back to them really quick. Is there a comparable solution for doing this with a normal system?
@JourneymanGeek wait wait. What model specifically?
03:04
@nhinkle Hmm, don't really mind it anymore. Booting has gotten so quick that I don't need sleep / suspend / ...
@iglvzx issshh. Time machine for OS X, windows backup.
And there's things like sandboxie
Apart from the occasional idiot way of the power being pulled in one or another way. :P
@nhinkle Hmm. I never used Windows Backup. I'm a bad person
@nhinkle: Dell inspiron 530 desktop ;p
I'll have to try after I do my annual reformat.
03:06
local only tho. can't be arsed to ship it
@iglvzx Closest I've found is this software although it's paid.
@JourneymanGeek dangit. You're in Australia or something, right?
Singapore ;p
Close enough as far as "local" goes :P
I know some folks whose Inspiron 530 died. Needs a new mobo. Go figure.
Another one is this software which is free, might be worth checking out at least.
03:08
What if I paid you to ship it?
sure its the mobo?
@nhinkle: it isn't the money, its the hassle
lazy bastard :P
Don't know if they can really do snapshot restoring, but they do allow you to take different types of back-ups...
@JourneymanGeek we think so, but not 100% sure
(tip, yank the video card. pop out the black cover over the onboard video)
test
03:09
no discrete graphics on this one
@TomWijsman Hmm. Not too expensive. Incremental backups are wonderful.
lol
there is
nvidia or ATI graphics?
nope, pretty sure theirs came with integrated graphics
there was an empty PCI-E x16 slot
03:09
oops
point still stands tho. I'd have to ship an obsolete motherboard, HOPE it survives...
@iglvzx Oh, I'm linking the wrong one, the one I've trialed was the timeline one.
it just turns on with a yellow warning light on the power button and no other info. checked RAM, no dice. power supply seems fine. it's either the mobo or the CPU
ugh, sounds just like the video card issue ;p
Although that was quite a while ago, the product has been improved since.
they live on a farm and it's a 45 minute bike from my house, and i didn't have most of my testing equipment when i went, so it might've been something else, but mobo was best i could tell
03:11
But well, as I upgraded my Windows I haven't backed up anything since.
Got to first clean up to get some space to actually back up to... >_<
there's a manual online as well
was reasonably useful
@TomWijsman $10 less! lol. Thanks.
Yeah the service manual (at least the US version) was really shitty for this one. The whole thing felt like a pile of crap.
03:12
@iglvzx Ah, also see whether home VS pro helps; sometimes you might not need the pro one. But be sure to run it trial...
@TomWijsman Of course!
Bleh. I do not like SVN

Q: tortoise svn+ssh constant login

Tom AugerI'm trying to connect to a remote repo using svn+ssh through Tortoise. I can connect via svn+ssh:// through the command line no problem from other remote servers. However, on my windows box, I'm getting this constant cycle of prompts for username and then password. If I have the patience and go t...

Found that product a while ago when I was looking for a Timeline-like back-up software as well, but they even have more features.
@iglvzx mecurial and kiln are WAY better
@KronoS I love Mercurial. I just started learning Git
> If I have the patience and go through like 30 of these, I can actually see the repo!
03:16
@iglvzx i haven't used git
I guess it'll take me another two years to finally understand Git, but I still love it.
It's like every time I merge or branch or rebase, I've got to look up all the workflows again.
He actually tried 30 login windows and then actually saw the repo, what... Funnies are one of the things that makes reviewing / answering fun. :D
@slhck Use git help some more, then you have to be less on the web.
@KronoS Git is supposedly faster, but I haven't found anything compatible to TortoiseHg for Git. I guess that's the difference when you have a big team like Atlassian/BitBucket code TortoiseHg and smaller, independent groups coding TortoiseGit.
@TomWijsman I actually use Stack Overflow for that most of the time :P
Hmm, that might be fast enough as well. Guess SO can replace manuals to some extent...
Would be fun to examine how much SO covers some manuals. :D
Or write an userscript that lets you click any line in the manual and you'll end up in a relevant SO question.
03:20
@TomWijsman Well, some Git questions are very popular on SO, and they mostly quote manuals. But the nice part is where they go beyond that and have useful comments and all..
I have enjoyed one Git client, however. SmartGit's interface and tools are very nice.
isn't there an official git client for os x and windows now?
@nhinkle There is, yes.
Wait, someone's actually drawing on the page. >_<
Oh wait no, it's just something from a while ago that scrolls up again or so... :D
Oh, there's all my tray icon notifications. All 100 of them from the last few days...
03:23
@iglvzx wut
@nhinkle Dropbox, Battery, etc. I was wondering why it seemed quiet. Weird. Maybe my annual reformat is due sooner than expected. :P
@iglvzx Did you drew some more? :D
Bob
Bob
@iglvzx It's not all that reliable...
@TomWijsman No. I only drew the heart on your romantic interest.
Rofl, the SO front page.
03:28
@iglvzx whut?!
@nhinkle * swift ly points out Tom's avatar *
OHhhhhh...
yeah, about that...
Dang markdown!

Q: How can I send super large files directly to another computer in the Internet for free?

CruiseI regulary need to transfer very large files (30 GB) to my friend - financial statistics. I don't have any problem with bandwidth: it is very broad here. I did some research in the area, so: 1. I would not use FTP, as it is very tricky to get it working behind a NAT. 2. I would not use Skype/MSN...

I want to bold PART of the word
03:30
Prepared for cat day...
this is just so nasty :( ^^
@KronoS KILL IT @nhinkle
@iglvzx i don't think there's a way to do that
@KronoS Yes, "financial statistics"... Mmmhmm.
lol
its a pony question
03:32
Some weird broken links in there.
Like this, at your own risk, click2copy.com
@iglvzx this is the first result for markdown bold only part of word
15
Q: Markdown handles inline bold text (within a word) incorrectly

Good PersonWhen I bold text inline like *strong*text it gets parsed as italics instead of either bold or nothing. I created the above with the following line: **strong**text As I understand it, inline Markdown is disabled here, so this text should really be ignored.

Nice, @RandolphWest found three questions to merge. superuser.com/users/44467/sunilrai86

Bob
@TomWijsman Do you have any idea how they drew that trollface so accurately?
ugh
OLD COUNTRY. Y SO SILLY!
@Bob Oo, I remember using a tool that would take SVGs and draw the paths with your mouse. I used to cheat in Pictionary type games online... <_<
03:37
@Bob I'm not drawing on SO... I'm drawing on the profile of @iglvzx.
@TomWijsman I offered 2 bounties in my lifetime here. But I forgot about them and they weren't auto-awarded for some reason...
Bob
Bob
FTP is a server software! FTP was developed in the beginning of 70s for file transfer. Ancient people could not predict how the internet will look like in 40 years. FTP DO NOT FIT to the current concept of commodity computer like we all have at home now in 21 century.. under all these NATs, etc. Bittorrent - is a file-sharing and it is TCP-based, so you need to tweak your browser. — user55927 Nov 20 '10 at 0:41
o.O
@iglvzx (Active bounties, I don't mind. Did you see the small t? :P)
Hint: Tags
Also tried to draw a cursor on the RSS feed logo at the bottom right.
@TomWijsman Not sure I see the "t"
@iglvzx Did it another time in your about me. :D
03:40
Nevermind
@TomWijsman I love you but hate you right now.
@KronoS What concerns me the most is not even the use of https.
Perhaps the boxes might though, but still... The page itself can be tampered with.
And hmm; about the in-memory thing, I'm wondering how many incoming users they can actually support. Given that you're probably not the only one uploading to the memory...
A system that starts to upload as the other user downloads is probably the best way to go about it, but would require them to run a plugin / client.
@Bob Wake me up when P2P websites are around, where all the data is put on your own data server at home and surfing becomes instantaneous apart from some real-real-time stuff (which is again spread P2P so it'll reach you fast).
Sharing a large file would then become as simple as decrypting the file using some token and key you share...
The entire internet in your basement, a Super User's dream.
