1:35 PM
Cov's getting gigabit soon
(and other places)
Burgi
2:12 PM
grumble grumble
they don't even service anywhere on my estate and i live very close to the city centre
bertieb
Yea, no VM here
they're seemingly pretty arbitrary
Not that I'm that keen
Hoping for gigabit from CityFibre
via Vodafone at...
waves hands vaguely
some point
Burgi
BT
OpenReach haven't even brought FTTC to my area
bertieb
ouch
on the roadmap?
Burgi
not that i know of
we get 20/5 with zen
bertieb
that's pretty reasonable, considering ADSL1
v annoying not to get FTTC
Burgi
2:20 PM
it might also be an issue with physics
bertieb
I think I got at most 16 ish down when I was on an exchange-only line < 100m from exchange on ADSL1?
24's the theoretical max IIRC?
Burgi
i'm not quite sure where the cab is
bertieb
long time ago
presumably they'd add a cab for your estate when they do it
check with SamKnows
their map dealie is/was v informative
and exchange list:
availability.samknows.com/broadband/exchanges/bt/fttc
exchange map not working for me:
availability.samknows.com/broadband/exchange_mapping
Burgi
according to openreach they have FTTC
might be just distance
bertieb
Could always ask Zen, they may able to tell you more about OR's plans
Also hmmm: my exchange is FTTP enabled
Burgi
2:25 PM
the exchange map is totally broken, they haven't updated to the new version of the GMaps API
bertieb
yea
shame, as it used to be really good
openreach.com/fibre-broadband/fibre-first
↑ there's a postcode dealie on there
should be able to register interest for FTTP ± FTTC
Burgi
i've managed to somehow get the map working
matrix ->

2:50 PM
Anyone know how I'd find a motherboard compatible with my Processor&Graphics card?
Do I need to look at the datasheet/specs for every motherboard?
Burgi
what CPU do you have?
its the CPU that is the limiting factor here
dustytrash
Intel Xeon E5-2620
Looking to upgrade motherboard, but hoping I can keep the same cpu
Journeyman Geek
hm
that's slightly tricky
CaldeiraG
Any X99 should do but yea, some may need a mod of some type
Journeyman Geek
@dustytrash there's a few chinese companies making cheap/slightly unusual ones on aliexpress
and they're likely to have models that their boards will work with listed
dustytrash
3:01 PM
Hmm damn, maybe it would be better to buy a new CPU and motherboard then
Iunno if I wanna risk getting a hacky one
Journeyman Geek
:D
I suspect a modern high end mainstream or HEDT board would likely be a good choice
dustytrash
I'll check that out. If I have a full sized case, do I need to really worry about size?
Journeyman Geek
hm
Unless its an EATX board....
a full sized case would take in any ATX or smaller board
some bigger cases will take EATX but you'll need to check
most regular boards are ATX though
dustytrash
Just googled EATX board, looks pretty snazzy
Burgi
which is it virgin????
bertieb
3:12 PM
@Burgi They haven't done it yet but they could/will is my reading
Worth emailing CableMyStreet
They did my flat after I emailed them
unfortunately that was just after I moved out
Burgi
lol
dustytrash
Lots of motherboard say they support "Xeon scalable processors" Does that mean it would support my Xeon E5-2620?
Oh nvm I think I see. There's a 'scalable family' of general xeon processors and processors specific to the PC/motherboard which mine is
dustytrash
3:39 PM
hmm Xeon E5-2650 processor went down in price from over $1,000 to under $60 in 5 years. I'm assuming just because it's old
bertieb
Original proc is from 2012?
tho it seems to have had different revisions
dustytrash
Not sure tbh, looking at a build from 'pcpartpicker', the price says he bought it for $1,048 but the amazon link is $58. I'm assuming pcpartpicker is still using an old price
bertieb
Oh, those things scrape costs
so unavailable parts can seem outta whack
all it needs is one third party seller sticking it on for $1000 with automated pricing
or, as you say, might be the original price
could probably look up RRP/MSRP/old reviews for price
dustytrash
Ahh fair enough
Intel's recommended price is still over $1,000 though, for the same part
Works with the x99 motherboard you mentioned too, I think ima get it. Man picking parts is stressful lol
bertieb
3:55 PM
Do what I do
Can't stress about picking parts
rollsafe.jpg
if you can't afford the parts
;-P
a flawless plan
dustytrash
Whats rollsafe mean?
I can afford the parts sorta, my work gives out loans for buying PC parts haha
Burgi
@dustytrash
