Negative cooling
Active cooling
Passive cooling

@bwDraco yeah mine is fine, just my wifes phone is dying and she can't afford a replacement, while.... I luckily have some money this month.
So, I figure replace mine, give her my old one
@MichaelFrank Does negative cooling work by making the machine feel bad?

I'd like to ask something related to the COVID-19 pandemic and the impact it has on laptop supply chains, more specificaly on how it'll impact the availability and price of laptops the coming year. I really wanted to buy a new laptop this year, but I'm not sure it's really a suitable year for that given that a lot of manufacturers and stores are already announcing price hikes and product shortages because of COVID
But I'm not sure if I can make an on-topic question about that, or how to word it
It wouldn't be shopping advice, but rather how the pandemic would affect things

its too early to tell
JLR are having supply issues already but they are a small car manufacturer
a lot of stock for stores is already on route to the west via container ship

yeah, i know, but I'm planning on buying around October

its unanswerable

11:34 AM
@Nzall hmmm it's likely to be opinion based at best.
Fortunately, it's not like the thai flooding, where physical plants were damaged, it's just there's no one to work in them currently.... so things should get back on track quite quickly.
on the topic of COVID19, I wonder if the 14 days thing is causing people to be missed
What if some people are carriers who don't present symtoms

@djsmiley2kTMW Apparently the incubation period is not 14 days, but 24 according to some researchers
And maybe even 27

..... whoops
well lots of viruses find carriers
i.e. people who are infected, but don't present any symtoms.
i.e. herpes

@djsmiley2kTMW I mean, sure, the plants are still functional, but there are a bunch of rules that companies need to fulfill in order to be allowed to go to work again, such as a stash of face masks sufficient to give every employee 2 masks daily for 2 weeks, and considering those masks are currently in extremely dire shortage...

11:58 AM
there aren't enough facemasks at the facemask factory

yeah, indeed

my GF has friends still stuck in hubei
they went to visit family for the spring festival and now aren't allowed to return home
the government has banned all large gatherings which includes factories

@Burgi Last I heard, they allowed factories to resume work if they have a stash of face masks for every employee that lasts for 2 weeks
Problem is that 1) not enough face masks; 2) workers are apprehensive to return; 3) factories need to find replacements for those that got very sick or died; 4) some deaths, like owners or upper management, may doom a company; 5) even if a factory may get back to work smoothly, chances are they need supplies from a different factory and may end up having to shut down again soon after because they simply do not have enough to work with

i think that is the issue that JLR is having

1:04 PM
yeah JLR runs with almost no stock
/me used to work in the factory that made their seats

Any way to transfer admin access from first account to another account in Windows 10?
*from main account to secondary account
So I can delete main account and keep secondary account.

4:47 PM
you can make the other account an admin too.

As we work to improve our relationship and communications with our users, we want to share with you our community roadmap each quarter, so once every three months. Even though we are halfway through this quarter, we wanted to share with you what we are working on currently. In March, we will share our roadmap…

@Biswapriyo well that's... cool in theory

7:51 PM
@djsmiley2kTMW That is one hell of a multi-talented guy.

8:35 PM
hey peeps
is there some tool that's used to launch applications with substituted system variables?
I think it might help me give the app a custom DPI scaling value
something like this maybe nirsoft.net/utils/advanced_run.html
maybe I can send a message that the dpi changed and see if the app can adjust the UI scaling to that

@Hakase What do you mean by substituted system values?

current system-wide DPI scaling is 100% but for certain apps I want to try and give them different values

What app?

photoshop
and illustrator

I don't think it's usually possible unless it is built in to the app, like Firefox for example.
Do those apps not have zoom?

8:48 PM
well, zoom as in for the edited images themselves, yes, but for the texts and buttons of the GUI controls, not really
there's only a 100% / 200% scaling option and tiny / small / medium / large for text, which is about 75%…200% but that is not enough, everything is still tiny
looking up the code and values for the WM_DPICHANGED message

idk I'm gonna try

and no, those checkboxes didn't help in any combination on a 100% global scaling setting
if I increase global scaling, all the other apps become huuuuuge

If the suggestions don't work please ask a question on the main site

8:58 PM
I already did

@Hakase So why are you asking here? This is not a place to promote your question.

9:17 PM
I asked a different question

...welp. The New York Times has increased the price of the subscription. It is now $17 every four weeks, up from $15. This is the first time The Times has ever raised the subscription price.
Well, digital subscriptions.

We’ll be upgrading from SQL 2017 to SQL 2019 on our primary clusters between 9:00-10:00AM Eastern (14:00-15:00 UTC) on March 7, 2020. We expect to be read-only less than an hour and in full maintenance mode only a few minutes. For more details, see our post on meta.stackexchange. If we’re in maintenance and you can’t see that post, try again in a few minutes!
