latest numbers from China: news.qq.com//zt2020/page/…
> infections: 4275 (confirmed) + 5796 (suspected)
dead: 106
recovered: 60
it has been floating around since 25th/26th ... the numbers match too close for comfort

8 hours later…
9:04 AM
hmmm

morning

So people just aren't getting better?
Morning @Burgi

@djsmiley2kTMW there is no data for that

o_O
'Recovered: 60'
I guess it doesn't tell you how long they were infected.

where did you see that?

why not?
someone has already done the hardwork building a simulation that runs on consumer grade hardware so why not mod it to model real diseases? especially if it helps researchers

10:35 AM
I think that was the point- it's designed as a game, not a research tool
to save on it being associated with junk science commentary
you know, the usual clickbait drivel
"We loaded up Plague, Inc with the coronavirus and this is what happened"
given people are dying it'd be particularly crass
Cynically speaking, also means they can't be accused of profiteering from disaster
since they can say that they said not to use it

10:56 AM
'Greenland and Madagascar plead with people to stop swarming to their countries'
'Madagascar shuts down ports to stop people entering'
...

11:09 AM
its basically risk

2 hours later…
12:54 PM
I never actually played risk, tho my parents had the board game

1:33 PM
@DavidPostill Windows defender should do just fine on Win 7+.
Are you still on 7?
I wish they had never changed the UI from 7. I miss it so much.

2:16 PM
@djsmiley2kTMW Would you say that you never found it... worth the risk?
YYYEAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHH

2:52 PM
;p

Ben Popper on January 28, 2020

Our guest this week is Alex Qin, co-founder and CEO of the Code Cooperative.

Alex graduated from NYU with a degree in computer science and worked as a developer and engineer at several startups in New York City, eventually assuming senior roles like engineering team lead and director of technology.

Along the way, however, she found herself face with discrimination and harassment. In 2016, she dramatically altered her appearance, an experience she discusses in a humorous and poignant talk – Shaving My Head Made me a Better Developer. …

3:48 PM
@rahulatschool I think they stopped updating that

@JourneymanGeek wait what?
> Microsoft Security Essentials reached end of service on January 14, 2020 and is no longer available as a download. Microsoft will continue to release signature updates (including engine) to service systems currently running Microsoft Security Essentials untill 2023.
And that's just for Windows 7. Windows defender is still supported on newer versions, obviously
Essentials can still be downloaded from ninite.com

Yup. And he is on 7

1 hour later…
4:57 PM
I'm at 5555 on Super User :D

3 hours later…
7:37 PM
Yet another speculative-execution vulnerability: cacheoutattack.com
I'm getting tired of this whole processor vulnerability song and dance...
And yet again, only Intel appears to be affected as this involves Intel's implementation of TSX-NI. 9th Gen Intel Core processors and newer are unaffected, as are AMD processors of any generation.

Wow that's bad

8:23 PM
Is there any analysis?
Not sure why it gets rated E
It gets a thumb down for "This service retains rights to your content even after you stop using your account"
but surely that's a consequence of the CC license?
It also gets a thumb down for
> Stack Overflow reserves the right to refuse, suspend or terminate your access to the public Network if it determines, in its sole discretion, that you have in any way violated these Public Network Terms or are otherwise ineligible to access or use the Network or Services.
Also gets a thumbs-down for
> Please note that Stack Overflow may not work properly and you may have diminished functionality if you opt-out of certain cookies.
Which is kinda misleading, as it works just fine (albeit logged-out) sans cookies
So yea, I'm not convinced by all of that

> 0.0/0.0 MB (-1%)
> -1%
(for a brief moment as Task Manager starts, with the default tab set to Performance)

@bertieb I like the analyzing :) Lol
It's not an end-all-be-all, but a cool add on to check out anyways

9:35 PM
Oh yea, useful to have these summaries
Just not clear at a glance where the grade comes from
And that a consequence of CC licensing and cookies are (visually) the same as binding arbitration, indemnification, etc etc

9:53 PM
Hmmm, and a bit more hmm
There's a device on my wifi
called "Private", DHCP lease assigned to "*", doesn't respond to pings
Wondering if it's Chromecast-related
though that has a separate entry
Oh, I see, it's the MAC that's 'Private' (F0-4F-7C)

spooOOoooOOOOooOOoooky

10:08 PM
Yea
the phone call really is coming from the house...
I'm taking all advice
if anyone wants to chip in :P
particularly with an alternative to MoocherHunter, so that I can physically track it down
(Linux and Android apps considered)
Oh, or OSX
I've not yet updated to MacOS I don't think
Could a phone's wifi calling appear as a separate device?
Seems unlikely, but I'll grasp at any straw here

10:24 PM
Is it active?

Its lease is very recent
but I don't see it in the actual wireless log
and no active connections
I had to reboot the router for other reasons
so I'll see if it comes back
trying to figure out how this WRT54G[L] is configured
as I can't seem to ping that either
despite it appearing on my network list

can't you just factory reset it?

Yea could do
not sure what that would do to Tomato firmware on it tho
will see what nmap makes of it

Tomato should survive a hard reset, I guess.

Ping?
Pong!
(phone and computer :D)
Sorted it
basically didn't want to respond on it's 'external' address
but happy to respond on internal address when I connected a laptop to it
had to change SSID because of a naming conflict
but hopefully all good now
so, where's that Chromecast at...

10:38 PM
did you check behind the elephant?

Oh yes :P
So, couple interesting things
(something something, values of 'interesting')
the router's web "reboot" button didn't work, had to be done manually
router was churning 100% CPU on one of its cores
and now it's back up my Chromecast actually get signal
(rendering the setup of the WRT54GL somewhat moot, but hey ho)
so something strange was or is going on

11:02 PM
Got a Wi-Fi scanner to monitor the channels in use?

My, um, friend wants to know if you are referring to a device or an app?

Either or

Tomato provides a wifi scanner, actually

I use a WiFi scanner app on my phone, and it gives me the info I need
But you need it to be portable so you can see that the signal is reaching where you're targetting

there were a couple 2.4 channels in use, other than my own

11:03 PM
What ones?

ah, right

1, 6 and 11 are the best
And you should avoid going in between

Yea, think those were taken
my main router was on 1

And others?

couple other home routers elsewhere

11:04 PM
Are they also on 1?

6 and 11 I think

OK, so that's a normal setup
And you only have 3?

3 routers?
I have 2 routers
altho it might be going back to one
as me mum's just phoned me to say her Roku isn't working
so it must have been connected to the router my nephew had borrowed to play his PS4 there when he stayed over $months ago

OK, so two you control, one you don't
Next, take a survey of your home. Draw a floor map (paper or MSPAINT, don't matter). Go to various areas, scan with your Wi-Fi analyzer, and see what kind of strength you're getting
Unless you have WAP teaming setup, don't use the same SSID on all your routers

tbh most UK houses aren't bigger enough for more than one router

11:32 PM
Good to know
Stil, same question... Create a floor map, find out what's strong and what isn't in what area
