How do you know if it's worth it to add new ram to existing or swap it out all together?
@northerner Depends
on how much ram you need
I tend to get the biggest sticks I can
so I just add
I heard it's bad to mix different RAM brands together
Bob
Bob
@northerner It can be suboptimal but it'll usually work and you just end up with a tradeoff of RAM speed vs capacity.
usually owrk with Intel*
AMD/Ryzen CPUs can be a bit fussier about RAM config :\
@northerner well its messy
basically you want similar ram for things like dual channel to work
and your ram is always as good as your 'worst' ram

1 hour later…
06:16
Weird when I tried to put both types in the computer wouldn't turn on

2 hours later…
07:50
could be a number of reasons for that.
08:08
@Burgi They've been there for a while
It's weird to see them
There's none up here
I only encountered them on my way to Sheffield
I've seen em on the M1 and M6.
Tis funny considering how far from any sea I am
08:31
woah chrome what's this 'send this to' button in my address bar
you still use chrome?
08:48
@JourneymanGeek well this chat.. (Lower half) chat.meta.stackexchange.com/transcript/89/2019/9/17/21-24
:(

2 hours later…
10:33
I've been on Firefox on PC for a few months now. Finally made the switch on mobile too, earlier today.
10:49
@Burgi yes?
Hmmmm
I have a load of data
Group:Group, Group:Object
i.e. groups can contain groups, objects, or a mix of both
hell, they could even be recursive by accident.
I want to write some python to give me all the objects that a group contains, or all the groups a object is in...
chrome seems to make my PC crawl
@Burgi Not had any issues here with all sorts of hardware
i'm finding FF has a smaller footprint especially with many tabs
How many is 'many' btw
I have generally 8-20 open
but never much more than that.

I want to write some python to give me all the objects that a group contains, or all the groups a object is in...
I'm guessing this should all just be arrays?
Oh, did I mention the source data is a html doc?, it's all in a table within it.
Do I need to ping y'all ;)
11:14
@djsmiley2k 100+
ah
iiiiiiiiiinfact
I already have the data in a CSV :O
11:39
@Burgi That's one of their major selling points. Firefox uses a limited number of content processes (usually no more than 8, can be changed) to handle an arbitrary number of tabs. This uses less memory than having one process for each tab, regardless of how many tabs you have. It used to be the case that Firefox needed more memory per process but that's gotten much better lately.
@djsmiley2k HTML → sounds like a job for beautifulsoup
Taken with a Samsung Galaxy Note10+, telephoto lens, cropped and adjusted in Snapseed (thanks, S Pen!).
meow
Gotta love the neighborhood kitties.
11:45
First time I've ever used Snapseed with the S Pen. It's a revelation.
Also, lighting wasn't great but the camera still pulled through (1/17s f/2.1 ISO 500).
12:07
@bertieb yah, cept I realised I have CSV already \o/
Ah, nice :)
Just waiting for pandas to finish installing and I can try importing the CSV :O
I'm not sure exactly how said CSV was created, but it'll do for now as I'm meant to be using it as the 'source' anyway, rather than using the HTML which is the actual source.
I've moved to generating using json as my storage format for things I used to use CSV (well, TSV) for
Fair dos
Yeah, I didn't generate this so.....
The firewall has a 'export to html' option, which generated a nice html file of all the rules, groups, objects, etc.
But parsing that is painful by hand.
If I can realitively quickly, get something up and running to do this for me, it'll be awesome.
> >>> Jobs: 21 of 24 complete, 1 running Load avg: 1.13, 1.03, 1.10
Aye, figured, just a passing comment really- python's json lib is excellent
I seem to have misplaced my batteries
12:10
yah
So I am mouseless until i can find them, or the dongle for my other mouse
Which I unplugged recently
If I didn't have documentation showing me pandas, I'd be parsing into json i suspect
that's how I used to do stuff in PHP at old job.
I read that as mouthless
and was wondering what Maurice had gotten himself into this time
Aha! Found the dongle
How do you plan to talk, if you have no mouth?
12:11
I once again have a mouth
s/dongle/doggie.
Said the actress to the bishop.
(said Mike Tyson)
I would like to know where me batts are tho
I should still have a bunch of them
> It looks like you're trying to know where you batts are tho.
12:13
y tho.
Thanks for the help, Clippford
Yeah I'm sure I've brought like 48+ batteries from amazon, yet can't find any, anywhere :S
Same xD
Where are my batteries?
Hmmmm how did you activate clippy o_O
Whurr muh Umazon Basics
12:13
I would like to know where to find my batteries
Hahah, ah!
these be rechargables
they're all in kids toys.
litterally hundreds of kids toys
Oh gosh I bought rechargables too, didn't I
I remember asking Draco about them
What the fudge did I use those for?
Ohhh yeah, my flash gun
Also they're AA, I want AAA
If I were a battery, where would I be?
- ✗ man drawer
- ✗ downstairs cupboard
- ✗ desk drawer
inside some device you rarely use.
hmmm I wanted AAA too, I found some inside the kids teapot
Good idea
But I want to know where the ones I bought are :P
WHIT
I bought some rechargable AAAs
But... why
And where
Oh right yeah, for me mum
12:52
@bertieb none of them
And you won't find them until you look for something else.
Correct!
@JourneymanGeek s/look.*/order some more/ ?
because that's what I ended up doing :D
It's both possible and indeed probable that I've used my supply up
13:04
Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh
I imported the CSV and it is like yo I read this bad boy fine
Nice
got a weird one here:
according to microsoft there are no minutes in hours any more....
> For member name, get members

if members =! IP

for member name, get members

if members == IP

if members == Unnamed

echo 'Is network, subnet is' return Unnamed

else

echo 'Is IP' return IP

done
holy broken indenting ;D
13:41
Any of you used pandas?
@bertieb this feels like I should just make it into Json, for the ease of working with Json...
Pandas seems to be huge overkill, and simply 'selecting' a cell is actually not easy.
I have not used pandas I'm afraid
@djsmiley2k Might actually be helpful :D I'm not sure how well CSV maps to json tho
14:12
I asked that Q about Win10 per-app scaling btw, can link if anyone interested
Ave
Ave
14:52
@rahuldottech remember digispark?
(yes I pinged a 2 year old message)
@rahuldottech in case that ping doesn't go through
targeted phishing in the wild with netflix branding using digisparks
15:04
@Ave heh, yeah. I still use mine sometimes. (also, the ping went through :))
Ave
Ave
@rahuldottech I'll send one to a friend
@Ave Not surprising at all, really. They actually make for really great cheap rubber duckies.
I can get one here for ~$1
So... yeah

1 hour later…
16:07
@bertieb I'm actually just about to ask a similar question
@rahuldottech Oh..?
@bertieb Yeah, so here's the thing. I need to scale some apps 125%, and I need to scale some apps 150%
I don't think this is possible, but...
Worth a shot, I guess
Ah right
Something something... app manifest?
I have no idea
16:09
Right now I have windows set up to scale everything 125%, and it's pretty okay, but the text in some apps is still too small
Hmm
Not sure
Clearly I don't know enough about scaling :P

2 hours later…
18:15
18:25
thwup
So, uh
Why does my mouse have less range under Windows than Linux???
In Windows it only works when < ~10cm from the receiver 0_o
Otherwise it loses most movement/clicks
lol
@bertieb random guess (unlikely right) -> power saving enabled turning off the reciever ?
ffs
> The plugin does not support this browser.

Please use the following browser:
1.Internet Explorer 8 and above.
2.Firefox 51 and below.
3.Google Chrome 44 or lower.
18:44
@djsmiley2k not sure, could check?
@Burgi ouch, what's that for?
cctv
IE11 is such a resource hog
and you can't fake it in edge either
@djsmiley2k actually, why would it then work at close range?
because it sends less power
something, something, inverse square
Oh, I thought smiley meant the receiver was being turned off
?!
18:55
@Bob keeps setting off my cameras
USB selective suspend setting
no wait, it's just randomly started working
19:16
@Burgi snekjy bob
19:35
do old wireless mice share the shame channels as a/b/g/n
?
2.4Ghz? yes
hell, my brand new keyboard is 2.4Ghz
(a doesn't use 2.4 afair, and neither does N I don't think).
but deffo b/g
20:07
your doorbell is 2.4Ghz
Is it just me, or does this "photo" looks more like a 3D render?
20:46
My doorbell is wired? D:
May it was wifi intereference?
@MichaelFrank yes
that's some funny looking rock if it's naturally got a bump map on it.
And that's no cotton seedling
clear the image is a fake lol
why are ieee even publishing it.
21:05
Here we go, these are what they actually look like: nbcnews.com/mach/science/…
Still not sure why they chose a render, or labelled it as photo.
21:20
@JourneymanGeek what make is your chair again?
SecretLab
Thinking of getting one? :D
Also, also
guess what I found?
that's a drawer I am in and out of most days
guess I drank the stupid juice today
So now I have three mice on my desk
Because there's no kill like overkill!
Still want to know why the hecksauce the Logi one only works at very short range in Windows tho 🧐
21:34
I have an entire box of (maybe dead) mice at home.
Ah, cat presents
I have a bunch in a box that I occasionally take to Lidl to dispose of
21:53
Oh boy
I meant batteries
Full on herp
Got the herp, huh?
They probably have a cream for that.
22:09
I wish they did
I have been feeling especially stupid lately
First can't concentrate
Now making silly mistakes
It's not like me
Hopefully just a phase
23:01
> If you choose to live in rural US, you are signing up for this kind of lifestyle; you're on your own. As long as that's advertised I don't see a real problem. If you need health care then you should live near health care. Don't expect the same level of support in rural MN as you would get in NYC.
People who say stuff like this baffle me
Do they seriously not realize that everyone can't afford to move to and live in an urban city?
"if you need healthcare then you should live near healthcare"
Wtf
